75524, [SCION] Velvexund the Fist of Darkness
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Velvexund the Fist of Darkness
DescriptionEverything about this denizen of the depths is meticulously well-groomed. From the exactly uniform length of the silver hair atop his head to his perfectly trimmed fingernails, there is a fastidious attention to cleanliness and symetry about him bordering upon the deranged. Two eyes of glittering ruby are set in a face devoid of the lines of humour, their depths full of a callus malevolence. He isn't overly tall for one of his ilk, being perhaps four inches over five feet, and possessing a lithely muscled build. Weapons are displayed about him within easy reach, each one as carefully maintained as the rest of him.

RoleChapter 15 Chaos in the Underworld (revisited, oops) Added Tue Dec 13 00:27:38 2022 at level 51:Why is everyone else so useless? This herald must have given me the wrong information, for it is the Blackclaw guild that is at war with Galadon, and Dagdan who possesses new leadership. Why must I ever be surrounded by such hopeless purveyors of information? Even the simplest of details are beyond informants who should know better. Perhaps a clumsy misdirection? No matter. I have seen through her ham-fisted deception and matters proceed a pace.
TLDR: Velvexund continues to blame everyone except himself for mixing up Dagdan and Blackclaw in his last entry.

75555, Velvexund's Role Chapter 14

RoleChapter 14 Chaos in the Underworld Added Mon Dec 12 04:57:25 2022 at level 51:The next few pages of the research journal are quite odd. There seems to have been a page given over to some kind of scheme or mutual arrangement with an individual identified as Zanzar, though much of it seems to have been blotted out in a fit of temper. In bold letters, scrawled in a quite uncharacteristically uneven hand across the top of the page are the words:
"The useless human goes missing. Put on hold indefinitely. Why am I ever surrounded by unreliable imbeciles?"
The next page however seems far more in line with the writer's usual style, the script small and meticulous.
The bounty office recently posted an interesting listing. I rarely devote much interest to such matters; often the sums are paltry to an individual of my means, and are typically over some petty matter or another. However, I have grown to rather loathe this Kingpin of Galadon for his constant attempts to truss me up like some raunchy specimen from his native homeland. It is quite undignified, and so seeing his name atop the list with a herald of all things gained my interest.
The elf in question was all too pleased to divulge all the details to me. A war between the thieves guild of Dagdan and Galadon over some small political matter, and one they currently believe Galadon shall win without difficulty.
That just won't do.
Well. The victor doesn't matter. But it ending won't do.
Wars cause people problems as a matter of course, and causing this 'Kingpin' problems is reason enough for me to get involved. Perpetuating the conflict for as long as possible will be just the thing, and making it messier in the process would surely be to my good.
I have begun the cultivation of an asset to take over the Hamsah guild. This Nijanna has some highly irritating behaviours even for one of its lowly birth, but as a tool in this subterfuge it should serve my purposes.
The Blackclaw guild also has a new leader, though his identity or other details concerning him are as of yet unknown. This will need to be determined, for perhaps he can also be useful, even if Blackclaw is practically a hovel besides the architectural wonders of Galadon and Hamsah Mu'tazz. I am told he is a duergar, which already gives me little hope. Such a dirty, ill spoken, mentally unsound people on average, but perhaps he shall divert from the norm.
Beyond that, I will need to reach out to my old acquaintence Gwenhowyvar to gauge whether I will be able to nudge the conflict to continue from his side of the matter, or whether I should throw false backing behind Galadon to inspire some additional bravado.
Decisions, decisions...

RoleChapter 13 Charity, but not at home. Added Wed Dec 7 05:53:05 2022 at level 51:Velvexund was confident he knew where he had gone wrong.
The man had clearly hoped the Commander would get his wife, and thus had been struck into despair upon realising it was not to be. The woman must truly have been loathed for the whole street to have reacted so poorly, but nevertheless. He need simply appeal to a more fundamental influence: and what person without it did not covet wealth? Yes, this experiment was perfect.
The Balator orphanage was just coming to life. Lights flickering on in the windows, the thunder of feet on wooden floors. Velvexund's lip curled - children were almost as ghastly as gnomes - but one must set aside personal feelings when performing experiments of import.
He waited.
Time passed.
He waited some more.
His fingers started to go numb.
Was anyone coming outside?
He waited some more...
Finally, at mid day, the first young child poked his head outside and let out an awed gasp.
Yes. This was perfect. He had known-
The child fainted.
Soon, a small gathering of adults had surrounded the experiment, children having been hastily shuffled back inside. The paladin swung from his ankles from a tree branch, gold having spilled in a river from the corpse's pockets to form a mountain beneath.
Why was noone taking it?
Why did they all look so miserable?
Was adorning trees not a seasonal practice?
Velvexund snorted in disgust. This festive nonsense was a sham. As expected, the gnome had been delusional and taken in by superstition. Only an irrational person could believe in happiness being a net benefit to something as complex and enigmatic as the soul. They were pleased with trinkets and tepid demonstrations of festivity, but his masterpieces were simply too much for them to comprehend.
There was only one lesson to be learned from all of this seasonal absurdity, and that was that truly, you could only Count on yourself.

RoleChapter 12 It came without ribbons, it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags. Added Wed Dec 7 05:50:47 2022 at level 51:Rud Olphenclaus' day started like any other. He woke up, collected today's issue of the Galadonian gazette from outside, kissed his beloved wife goodbye as she went off to the Spire for the days work, then settled in to check the news before preparing to head to his slightly later start in the nearby wine shop.
"GNOMES MURDER VILLAGE COMMANDER EIGHTY TIMES IN COLD BLOOD," screamed one headline. "EMPEROR HIDING FROM SCORNED LOVER!" shouted another.
Rud snorted. People would write any old tripe for a headline these days.
Then there was a knock at his door.
Rud frowned. Who could that be? He wasn't expecting a delivery.
Setting down the Gazette, he walked over and opened the door...
And the dismembered head of Commander Ravln leered from its place on a pike on his front doorstep, ghoulish grin far too close for comfort.
Rud screamed.
His neighbours looked out, and screamed too.
Velvexund, cloaked beneath his spell of invisibility nearby frowned.
The man's wife was a transmuter by all reports. Why was he not happy? How could such a gift in the morning not put a smile on his face? Were such relationships not built upon mutual affection?
Perhaps a different approach would be required?
And why, by Morius, was this fool babbling about killer gnomes?

RoleChapter 11 Bah humbug. Added Wed Dec 7 05:48:57 2022 at level 51:It was snowing in Hillcrest, and the joyful laughter of the gnomes in high spirits filled the village.
The ghastly little monsters were all running around, festive as could be. Velvexund briefly entertained pausing for a time to demonstrate his mastery of Ninauurm's flames; a small indulgence, but no. He was on business today. The Guildmaster had sent him off to this disgustingly cheerful little backwater in search of an artefact of some power, so pleasure would have to wait this once.
Was that a man made of snow? What a frivelous waste of time. What an unsightly and useless expenditure of energy. Thin lips became somehow thinner, and joyous gnomes moved that bit further out of the path of the miserable bastard that was in their town for some reason.
All except one.
A gnome with perhaps less self preservation instincts than sense approached the least festive drow in the north, a beaming smile upon his face as he thrust a steaming mug of some ghastly concoction under Velvexund's nose.
"Mulled wine?"
Now, perhaps on any other day, our tale would end here with one very dead gnome villager and a slight improvement to our villain's mood. Indeed, Velvexund's lips had formed the first sylabol of the invocation which would call down a lightning bolt to blast this imbecile out of his boots.
Unfortunately (or fortunately for the gnome), it was at that moment a snowball took the dread Fist of Darkness in the face, his incantation degenerating into wordless spluttering as a child of five did what battleragers and marans had failed to armed with little more than a handful of frozen water and enthusiasm.
The gnome peered up at him, quite concerned.
"You alright chief?"
"I hate, hate, hate gnomes. I loathe them entirely."
The gnome blinked.
"There's no need for that, eh? Just a bit of snow. Have some wine."
"No." Attempting to salvage a degree of dignity, Velvexund turned to leave.
"Enjoy the season," the gnome called after him. "Festivity is good for the soul!"
Velvexund paused.
That was nonsense.
It had to be nonsense.
But... Reluctantly, he acknowledged that all hypotheses had to be tested. Perhaps there was some seed of truth in this collective stupidity displayed by so many.
"Festivity, you say?"
"Yep," the gnome agreed cheerfully, blissfully unaware of the disaster he was apart of. "You just got to make people happy. Its easy!"
"Yes," Velvexund agreed. "A simple enough experiment."
The gnome blinked as the weird chap stalked off into the snow. "Eh?"

75551, Velvexund's Role Chapter 10

RoleChapter 10 The Chancelor is dead. Added Fri Dec 2 01:24:06 2022 at level 51:Velvexund had mixed feelings about the Chancelor's retirement.
On one hand, he could finally stop spewing this vapid flattery, and a potential barrier to his own progress into the deeper mysteries of the chasm was removed.
On the other, the Chancelor had been formidable. Not only as an ally, but as a test of his own abilities. He would dearly have liked to test himself against his fellow drow in the years ahead, a grindstone worthy of his cunning.
But it didn't matter now. Regardless of his feelings on the matter, the Chancelor was gone: and his fellow Scions were dropping like flies.
That, he supposed, was not unexpected. The Chancelor's strategy had been one forged upon the assumption of his hand to guide it. Gather up the ones with promise, replace them until one proved to be a viable match. It had been a somewhat chaotic system for Velvexund's tastes, but he suppose it had produced results: himself chief among them.
It wasn't the lack of Scions that was of immediate concern to Velvexund though. More pressing was the other void the Chancelor's departure had opened up, and that was that of the Chancelor's influence upon external affairs.
In this, the mildly deranged drow mused, the Chancelor had been vastly superior to him. That had been something to rectify, but the timeline had just become much more urgent.
He did so loathe networking. Having to treat with these lesser species as if they were actually his peers in something. Yet it had to be done, and it was not like there was anyone else remotely qualified for the undertaking.
He would start, Velvexund decided, with the Empire.

75550, Velvexund's Role Chapter 9

RoleChapter 9 The dangers of ambition. Added Fri Nov 18 14:40:49 2022 at level 38:The Chasm, Velvexund mused, was not so different to the asylum.
Well, at least in some ways.
On one hand, he was mostly free to pursue his research as he pleased. Noone rang their hands in dismay if they heard him discussing dismembering a specimen, or tried to talk to him about ridiculous notions such as racial parity.
On the other, dealing with the Chancelor was not so different. An authority figure who needed to be managed carefully. Flattery was such a blunt tool, but Velvexund had found it a useful one where said authority was concerned. It would have been far worse if the Chancelor was not in fact a capable and formidable member of the great race, but as it was it was workable.
If a transient measure.
Vanity was such a difficult thing to work around. Each word had to be measured. Each sentence carefully planned against the risk of giving insult. It was akin to walking through a field of serpents, having to place your feet just so to avoid a fatal trap. Velvexund had almost stumbled once or twice with the Chancelor, but had fortunately not quite fallen into the cunning drow's verbal ambushes.
Or perhaps he had.
The Chancelor had mentioned the Advisorship, then moments later snatched the possibility away with the offhand comment of what a grand offense becoming an advisor to someone as perfect as he would be.
But now... Velvexund wanted it.
Was that the trap? Or was that the warning. Was it both?
Ultimately, it didn't matter.
It was time to plan.

75549, Velvexund's Role Chapter 8
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 8 Update Added Tue Nov 8 11:06:10 2022 at level 36:Where Velvexund is at now:
- After talking more with Iliunezyn, he is Morius curious but still not fully sold on the whole religion thing. He has realised though that he must appear to be pious to Iliunezyn if he doesn't wish to be considered expendable, which he doesn't mind at the moment as it gives him opportunities to explore the strange concept which is faith. This might change depending on what conclusions he draws, though.
- He is considering his study of the soul, though much more quietly since the Chancelor doesn't outwardly seem to like it. This chafes somewhat, but it actually reminds Velvexund a little bit of how he got started in the enchanter's workshop - he has to keep his experiments quiet while benefitting from the resources of an organisation.
- He does believe he has chosen wisely. The complexities of the Chancelor's zealotry aside, he finds the Scions to be far more enlightened than most people he has met (at least by his suspect view of things).
On his fellow Scions:
- He holds Iliunezyn in high regard. Part racial bias, part his demonstrated power, and part that everything the Chancelor has so far claimed would happen has happened. He is also however very wary of the Chancelor, knowing that his place in the Scion's is dependent on the sufference of him and the Lord he prays to.
- He hasn't seen much of Nyrinia, but is mostly indifferent to her. She is a drow, but the Chancelor seems to be mulling over which of them is more valuable. He doesn't expect this to become immediately relevant, but acknowledges that discrediting her likely serves him in the longterm, so will take opportunities to downplay her competence and similar.
- Gulizsy is a human and also indicated that he was grubby. Velvexund likes neither of these things. An extra grubby human? The horror. He does however worry that Gulizsy may be considered more pious than he is due to seniority in the Chasm, so will try to learn more.
- Ormaos is just the Chancelor's muscle, or that's how Velvexund perceives it. He would not believe Ormaos capable of schemes or similar, so might walk into some trouble here. Pride cometh before the fall, etc.

75548, Velvexund's Role Chapter 7
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 7 Musings on faith. Added Fri Nov 4 06:58:28 2022 at level 36:I do not understand the concept of faith.
It is a puzzling conundrum. Priests give prayers to gods, and gods grant said priest's a sliver of their puissance to enact their will upon the world. This is logical. A symbiosis of sorts, and one that is a far swifter path to immediate power than the practice of magic in many ways.
I comprehend why such a path would be walked, even if I find it ultimately not to my liking.
Yet the faith that the Chancelor displays? This is a puzzle. He is no priest, and not of inferior breeding. His mind is evidently sharp and his power yet surpasses my own. He is by all measures a superior specimen of the greatest race at this present juncture, though this will not remain the case.
However, there is no evident symbiosis here. What does he derive from his evident faith? Is it ultimately not a subjugation of sorts? This, I do not understand.
It makes sense to find value in the teachings of his Lord. Indeed, I felt myself quite moved at points by the holy text - a logical and reasonable way to observe the world, and one devoid of much of the foolishness that I have come to associate with priests. I was even moved to prayer myself for the first time, for it is rational to give thanks to a higher power when they grant you insight.
But faith?
This I do not understand. Is it born of gratitude? For an unveiling of the eyes?
Perhaps. I suppose this could be seen as a symbiosis of sorts. The promise of further revelations in exchange for manifest belief.
Or is it something else?
Is it tangible? Is it ephemeral? Is it more of a social contract, if one with larger scale ramifications for the breaching of?
It is a puzzle.
I will solve it.

75547, Velvexund's Role Chapter 6
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 6 Progress Added Tue Nov 1 09:02:51 2022 at level 36:I only grow more certain that the unholy blessing conveyed upon an implement of murder is the path to uncover the mysteries which I covet.
There are glimpses. Signs. Possibilities. All these and something else lingering beneath the surface when I cut away at the flesh then the immaterial in that instant when life transitions into death. I must have it. I must know it! (The page is slightly torn here, as if the pen pressed just that little bit too hard.)
It is a masterpiece of spellcraft. I have disposed of several specimens in my refining of it, and yet there is so much more for me to do until I believe I will truly control this magic. I also have come to the rather stark conclusion that the spell is incomplete.
It is no surprise. A mage with even half my brilliance could waste two lifetimes and never come close to the creation of such an arcane artifice. Yet complete it I must, for perhaps therein will lie the key.
Even one such as I will require resources for such an undertaking. As doubtful as it is, perhaps this imperial black sect might have some scraps of knowledge that could aide me; and yet this Dreadlord of birth unfit to lick my boots dared to demand I kneel. His screams as I tore his soul from him soothed my irritation, though not the insult.
No. There is only one truly enlightened circle of minds worthy of my time and allegiance, and thus the darkest path ever remains the most favoured.

75546, Velvexund's Role Chapter 5
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 5 The mind of madness. Added Tue Nov 1 09:01:57 2022 at level 36:This research journal seems to be split into sections. The first page contains many equations, long and rambling strings of numbers and variables with no explanation for what their purpose is. There does seem to have been a conclusion drawn however, for the equations stop around three quarters of the way down the page, the last line circled in blood red ink.
The second page is even stranger. It consists of meticulously drawn images of various weapons, each labelled with care to elaborate on material, forge quality, and other similar characteristics. Here a sword, there a mace, several spears and even a simple rod. All of the weapon images have arrows leading to more in depth anotations, seemingly to dictate the value of them for an unspecified task.
The following dozen or so pages however are far more ghoulish than what has come before. Rendered in loving detail are surprisingly well crafted sketches, each one of a person caught in the throws of a painful death. The means of death is different in many cases, though there always seems to be some visible and violent trauma involved. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of these pictures however are the small samples clipped to the majority of sketches. Sometimes a piece of skin, occasionally a fragment of bone or scale.
Finally, passed the sketches, there is a written entry in the journal.

75545, Velvexund's Role Chapter 4
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 4 Summary/traits Added Fri Oct 28 07:47:23 2022 at level 36:Velvexund got an apprenticeship in the Artificer's Workshop. He became obsessed with the false life which golem's possessed and this obsession warped into an obsession with how people worked too. In his quest to uncover that which underpins true life he tried to dissect one of the other workers at the workshop; fortunately for the worker and unfortunately for Velvexund, as he is a puny drow with delusions of grandure with no actual training he got absolutely thrashed by this random janitor. They institutionalised him afterwards, and he spent many years sitting in his cell working on his theories and plans for the future. He always believed he would be free, having a megalomaniacal belief that he will always achieve his goals in the end (even if janitors disagree...)
Traits: - Hyper obsessive about his goal.
- Narcissistic. Has an utterly disproportionate belief in his own capabilities.
- Completely immoral. Doesn't go out of his way to be so, but morality just isn't a consideration in pursuing his aims. He sees no difference in taking a golem apart and taking a person apart, other than it is a bit messier.
- A racist. Doesn't hate other races, but sees them as inately inferior by default. Perhaps a particularly talented one could rise above the masses, but it should be expected that as a rule they are all lacking.
- As a caveat to the above, believes immortals (regardless of race) are superior lifeforms and have uncovered the great and terrible secrets concerning the soul. Will be very wary of them.
- Probably obvious, but rather murderous in his quest to understand.
- Hates the light when he is 'working'. Part a drow thing, part psychosis.
- Anti paladin because he's more interested in the soul and how it sets people aside from machines. If he knew how lichs did things with their rituals around the soul that might change, but I am working under the assumption that that is not something your average Joe would really be clued in on so he doesn't see anything necromancy could offer him in his quest that Ap doesn't.
- Sphere purity because of his goal. He believes that which underpins sentient life is the 'purest' concept, and he'll refer to it in similar termonology quite often. This is what he wants to uncover.

Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 3 Free Added Fri Oct 28 07:45:24 2022 at level 36:Velvexund smiled.
It was not a benign smile, this time.
It was good to be free.
He'd left Galadon far behind. It would be best to make himself scarce, at least for a time. He had always rather liked Udgaard regardless.
Such nostalgia. His feet almost carried him to the east gate by a reflex years old, before he paused. No. That reckoning would come one day, but not today. The mind was willing, but the body was not yet to task.
Follow the plan.
Velvexund turned west. He slipped passed the Necromancer's guild, then turned east. The guild of the dark knights loomed.
There was much to be learned from necromancy, but it was a far deeper concept that he desired the knowing of. What was the difference between man and machine? What was the fundamental thing which gave one greatness and the other servitude?
The soul.
And what lay beyond the soul? Was there a yet deeper layer?
He didn't know.
Not yet.
But he would.
Soon.

75543, Velvexund's Role Chapter 2
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 2 Bad news Added Fri Oct 28 07:43:57 2022 at level 36:Sighing, the Master Enchanter set down his work as there was a timid tapping at his door. He quashed his annoyance with practiced ease. It was easy to become irritated when distracted, but it was the sign of an undisciplined mind. People knew not to interrupt him if it wasn't important.
"Come in," he called.
A young man stepped into the room, slightly windswept and fresh faced. "A letter for you, Sir. It was marked urgent."
A letter? Hmm. The enchanter reached out and took it from the courier's gloved hand. "Thank you. Does it need a response?"
"No sir."
The enchanter nodded, slipping his finger beneath the letter's seal. This was not the usual way he received a new order or similar...
To who it may concern,
We regret to inform you that a patient placed into our care at your workshop's direction has escaped. We are still determining quite what took place, but we do believe the patient to be a low risk individual and are confident that he will be recovered and safely put back into our care in short order.
We do not wish you to be alarmed, but given the initial circumstances surrounding the patient's arrival we felt it best you be made aware. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions or concerns. Signed, Doctor R. A. Hopsworth, The Theran Asylum. Galadon branch.
The enchanter read the letter twice, paper crunching beneath his small hands as he chewed his lip in worry.
Velvexund had always been such a promising lad. He'd always hoped they'd have been able to fix him. Get his head back on straight and what not. People were much more complicated than golems, he knew, but these were professionals.
And yet he still remembered that murderous expression on the young apprentice artificer's face as the shouts of his would-be victim had brought people running. He remembered the boys bloody teeth as his split lip had dripped, and he remembered the cold promise as they'd dragged him away.
"This isn't the end."
Had he made a mistake?

Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 1 A benign smile Added Fri Oct 28 07:41:15 2022 at level 36:Velvexund did not like this doctor.
There was dirt under his nails. There was sweat staining his shirt. He was a disgusting, reprehensible excuse for an existence. Imperfection without purpose. Impurity without design.
That would be bad enough. Velvexund would not forgive it, but the doctor was a human. They were filthy creatures inately, and one did not judge a rat harshly for wallowing in filth.
Yes. This could be tolerated.
But he was the only one who insisted on bringing a lantern into Velvexund's cell. A light which stung his sensitive eyes. An abberation within his sanctuary away from the ugliness of the world outside. Illumination where all the doctors of the asylum knew that he wished none, and a distraction from his most critical work.
For this, Velvexund would judge him.
It was a brief visit, at least. Sometimes the doctors would speak with him. They would discuss the latest thing he had written, poking and prodding. They'd ask and ask and ask how he could believe such things. They'd question his equations and reasoning and attempt to have him denounce his own determinations as a flight of fancy or madness.
Fools, all of them. He was the sanest person in the building. He was of the purest blood, born to the blessed of darkness, and he had drawn his stark conclusions. In his lightless sanctum he saw more clearly than all of them.
He stared unblinkingly at the Doctor, the wretches mouth droning on and on about unimportant matters. He imagined freeing his arms from the restraints and wrapping his hands around the vermin's throat. Of peeling back the flesh as the worm's smug diatribe transformed to plees. Of smashing the inocuous lantern down upon that face until light of flame and light of life both went out. He imagined that moment which had been denied him once before, the witnessing of the transition from life into death.
Velvexund smiled at the Doctor, nodding in benign placation.
The Doctor left.
