Atrissa Amethiste the Sensational Chanteuse, Executant of the Eternal Star

The arresting voice of Atrissa Amethiste commands her audience's attention.

Description

The famed singer Atrissa Amethiste is here, a portrait of
effortless elegance. She adorns herself in silk robes and
rare jewelry, and is of a surprisingly small frame. Today
her hair falls over one shoulder in a clean sheet of slate
gray and silver, shimmering something like a frozen waterfall in
the sun. A glamorous golden tiara sparkles above the cascade,
and bright green eyes glimmer with a stoic, distant allure. Her
skin is fair and pale, her face petite and beautiful, if muted by
small riverbeds of deepening wrinkles. Above her bare collarbone
a small tattoo of a spyglass garners your attention, sparkling
with a bright silver energy that defies the otherwise sleepy
serenity this small, majestic woman projects.

Ripple Effect
Added Tue Jan 25 13:53:39 2022 at level 51:

The far-reaching ripples of Atrissa's words astonished her, and quite
overshadowed all the painful repercussions her spoken words had recently
brought on herself.

"The Squire Who Got Lost," had a curious life - once attempted to be used by
Atrissa as pro-Imperial propaganda to win some form of protection from Emperor
Odaza, then, when that failed, it was sung at an event exploring the line
between kindness and a golden aura. (Alas, that the beloved-by-many, hated-by-
Atrissa, Vlijerous did not attend!). And then, out of nowhere, it was
published by the Outlanders under the audacious title, "The Stolen Words."
The act was too amusing for Atrissa to be upset.

"Merciful Strength" was a poem Atrissa wrote for her ever-conflicted priestess
friend Dohri. She had no idea how much it meant to Dohri - so much so that
Dohri submitted it to the divinely mischievous Joihe as an example of an item
of great magic.

Then, "A Flower or a Tree." A poem Atrissa published quite clearly lamenting
the "energetic insolence" (as her big mouth told more than a few folks) of
Brem and Rytohn, bards who joined the Heralds, filled it with life, then
vanished. Rytohn returned, and swiftly published a dejected response. Atrissa
knew she hurt him, but... he did return!

But her big mouth had been hurting others, and her words were quite rippling
back at her. Rytohn was one thing - she wanted to reach him, hurt feelings be
damned. But Gwendelya, alas! Atrissa had shared her hurt with her old friend,
but knew deep down that it was, ironically enough, all her efforts to impress
the one she admired so much all along that had long ago pushed Gwendelya away.
Their friendship now settled into a stingingly friendly politeness, one that
Atrissa was ever taking measure of if could return the closeness from so long
ago.

And then that Ithyssraya... Atrissa wanted answers! But she did not fully
appreciate the extent of Ithy's ...affection... for the fallen Vlijerous.
And how the floodgates opened...

Atrissa accepted her regret for pressing at Ithyssraya, even if a large part
of her felt it was deserved, it wasn't wise, much less kind. But she also
accepted the painful irony of Ithy's own jab: "Stop caring so much about
words."

And just then, Gobnait came to Atrissa. "Rytohn is gone," she said. Atrissa
winced, but chose not to cry. Songs needed to be sung.

Careless Awakening
Added Fri Oct 1 01:12:02 2021 at level 48:

From the depths of Dhumlar-Kol, Atrissa reckoned with her fate. Too careless
to be bothered to carry any kind of supplies beyond food, water, and her
Chest of Inebriation, too lazy to learn all the skills of her guild, and too
sendentary to ever bother to learn her way around the world, Atrissa supposed
that maybe she should be a better person.

But she was in the midst of a quest for personal revelation, and if she was
being honest with herself, Atrissa did not want to worry with any of those
things. She did regret, however, how she acted in Maethien.

"What I am not," she declared to the dripping water echoing around her,
"is one who gets embarrassed or ashamed." Not before meeting Gwendelya,
anyway. Perhaps that was just the powerful effect of the rare person so
sincerely kind and true. Such people can apparently make you question your
very essence.

Atrissa remembered her solitary moment in the river.. was that revelation
false as the visit with Rarywey? Atrissa thought not, though she certainly
did not see herself getting in the river again anytime soon now. Atrissa felt
at ease with the idea of a return to the use of smiles and compliments as
means to free potions, fine gifts, and, of course wine. The use of song and
dance as a means to create a lovely, indulgent high. She just now saw no
reason to deny herself feelings of love and warmth, as she had before. Her
acute hyper-awareness of everything was what would enable her to gain
anything - no reason that couldn't include some kindness.

As her footsteps echoed eerily through the empty cobblestone tunnels,
Atrissa chuckled at her reaction to the actions of Skreenak. Atrissa
Amethiste would never sing for a captor. Atrissa Amethiste was the girl,
after all, who had rather died than appease Yatter's threats.

As an unseen moan echoed through the chambers, Atrissa recalled that
Rarywey never knew the arrogant and aloof girl Atrissa had truly always been,
at least, before she met Gwendelya... not to mention Darvel, Ethel, and
other friends she'd made. To Rarywey and perhaps others of late, Atrissa,
suddenly grappling with her identity, must have come off like a giggly girl
always clamoring for the spotlight. Luckily, she had a great opportunity
ahead of her in Hamsah. Even luckier, Atrissa realized that she had not
actually been on a journey of discovering who she was, she had been on a
journey of discovering what to do with feelings and ideals she didn't
understand. As powerful as they were: love, warmth, generosity, shame,
doubt, guilt and even trust were merely choices, not poisons, even if she had
quite allowed them to intoxicate her.

Atrissa plopped onto the stone floor by a locked gate, wondering if any of
her friends were anywhere they could help her get out of here. But it was fine.
Just another disaster she was comfortable enduring. To be Atrissa Amethiste,
it was worth it.

Rehearse, Rehearse
Added Thu Oct 7 14:04:30 2021 at level 51:

Atrissa stepped through her movements in the empty amphitheater out back,
struggling to keep her busy mind focused. How she hated the repetition.

Atrissa circled her body about the stage, a scarf flowing elegantly in the
momentum around her. It was the eve before her biggest show, and Atrissa
was not even worried about her performance. Nor was she worried about the
Goblin King's recently renewed threats and bullying, as terrified as she
had been at the time.

Atrissa felt her arms raise in unison, effortlessly flipping a long scarf
behind her. What weighed on Atrissa now was how, as her fame had grown,
so many people had come out of the woodwork to get at her. Needling for
reactions, manipulating for guild songs, brokering for publishing favors.
Words from The Poem re-emerged in her consciousness, and she tried to
disregard them.
...you are already so loud...

Atrissa felt her feet slide to the side, the right foot stopping just
slightly short of where it should. She'd been quite deflated with how
few people bothered to even try to read between the lines of her songs
- and dreadfully amused at the assumptions being made about her, as a
harmless, pretty little minstrel at the Inn writing sappy love songs.
...an audience with no ears...

Atrissa felt her hips swiftly turn about, and her feet pace 8, no 10?,
steps to stage rear. Atrissa had often forgiven herself for her
manipulative ways as a youth with her simple assertion that everyone was
hypocritical, that everyone was angling for their own designs. Since
meeting Gwendelya, she had come to doubt this to be the case, but
circumstances had henceforth swiftly reminded Atrissa how right she was
all along, at least about most people. Did gods angle for things?
...your feet in the sand...

Atrissa felt her shoulders turn, and her feet take her to the front of
the stage, before catching herself from nearly stepping over. It was
Rarywey who had most harshly snapped Atrissa out of her haze of
self-doubt, with her own mischievious manipulation at the expense of
Atrissa's emotions.
...find yourself weightless...

Atrissa felt her feet work back from the edge of the stage, but did not
feel the end of the scarf drift underneath them. When Atrissa confronted
the goddess, who had made herself quite known, she learned the hurtful poem
was not a failure to understand Atrissa, but a deliberate thorn to spark her.
Atrissa did not like it, but she had no choice but to accept that Rarywey's
hurtful poem was a trick not too different from similar stunts Atrissa had
pulled herself, all the time, on all sorts of people. Though, certainly not
for *their* benefit. Was she certain the poem was for her benefit?
...here's where it starts...

The underfoot scarf yanked Atrissa to the stage, slamming her down.
Atrissa stood up and went back to the beginning. The world was not
like Gwendelya and Darvel. Atrissa needed to keep her guard up.

Back to Aubade
Added Sat Oct 9 20:19:47 2021 at level 51:

Atrissa wandered alongside the ivy-covered exterior of Aubade Academy, not
entirely sure why she was returning. But the impulse struck her, and Atrissa
rarely took issue with impulses.

As she gently knocked on the door of Ms. Vespertine's office, a rush of fond
memories overcame her. Not waiting for an answer, Atrissa creaked the door
open and announced softly, "Hellooo, it's me, Atrissa!"

There she was, right at her desk. "Atrissa Lansbrooke," a voice responded
coolly. It was not the excited response Atrissa expected. All the same,
Atrissa proceeded in and helped herself to the small wooden chair across
from her desk.

"How have you been? It's so good to be back, the place hasn't changed a bit!"
she said cheerfully.

"Things are the same as ever, Atrissa. And I do believe that you have not
changed either," she answered, just as coolly as before.

Atrissa didn't understand if there was some insult in her words. She replied
with a playful chuckle, "Umm, why would I need to change? Aren't I one of
your best students? Didn't you hear I performed at the Sultan's palace?"

Ms. Vespertine replied, "Atrissa, you were literally one of the school's
worst students ever. You barely graduated."

Before Atrissa could reply, Ms. Vespertine spoke again. "Let me hear your
grand nocturne."

Atrissa had barely rehearsed it. She hesitated, not knowing what to do.

"No? How about a reveille, in epic repertoirre?" Ms. Vespertine added, quite
pleased with herself.

Atrissa's face reddened, her temper boiling over. "I am not some prospect
auditioning for your approval! UGH! I don't even know why I came back!!"

Before Atrissa could continue her rant, she was cut off - "Is it not obvious?
You are here to fish for praise, as you always did. A lazy self-absorbed diva
out there making a mockery of artistry with your sappy nonsense, barely
capable of singing the most rudimentary songs of your guild. So many would
love to have a voice like yours, and what do you do with it? You are a mess
of wasted potential, a terrible example for our students. I wish you not to
return to our premises, Atrissa."

Atrissa stood motionless, frozen with confusion.

She turned dejectedly and walked out of the office, anger defeated by angst,
insecurities bubbling up unchecked.

On her way out, Atrissa heard a young girl down the hall singing sweetly.
I hate this place," Atrissa muttered to herself. But then she thought she
recognized the tune, and moved closer to the girl. Was it Atrissa's song?

"I know how my heart beats... I know it beats for you-oooo!" sang the girl.

Atrissa knelt down next to the her, and said with a soft smile, "You! Have
an ever so lovely voice."

The Knight and the Wight
Added Wed Oct 13 23:18:42 2021 at level 51:

There she was again, at the bar, positioned right between her two closest
friends, standing in awkward, idle silence. Each with plenty to say to
Atrissa, but not so much in front of the other. Even Atrissa grew weary
of talking about herself after a time. But there was no way out - this was
not a band of three who could go adventuring together.

Atrissa sipped her wine. Atrissa ate a cookie. No lips said any words,
but four eyes fixed on the spotlight-loving chanteuse. The last time
she was in this position, and her and Gwendelya left Arstan in the
Inn alone, off for a fun adventure Gwendelya thought Atrissa would
enjoy. The thought pained Atrissa, but Arstan pulled at her in a way
Gwendelya did not, and Atrissa felt some relief to be free of the
wight's weight (and some guilt for that feeling as well).

But had Atrissa not been confessing this very pain to Rarywey only
moments before? It was as if the mischievous goddess conjured the
wight awake just to see her marionnettes dance.

Atrissa began rambling about herself again, and soaked up the
compliments each offered her. But when Gwendelya revealed that she
didn't see Atrissa as lazy, in fact that she admired her drive,
Atrissa realized something of Arstan. From day one Arstan saw and
accepted Atrissa's simple preference for things to be easy. The rest
of the world took her to be naive, or in need of care, which at first
amused her, but of late had grown wearisome, especially now that she
was quite a mature star. This included the patient, kind, and brave
paladin Gwendelya.

"I no longer have an appetite for foodsss or water... Atrissa sates
me now."

This quite snapped Atrissa back into the conversation.

"I do not wish to sate him!" Atrissa instantly and secretly told
Gwendelya.

Atrissa thought about Skreenak for a moment, then the marionnette that
Rarywey, just hours earlier, had given her. Atrissa was starting to feel
like a doll that everyone wanted to play with.

Pulling the Strings
Added Fri Oct 22 12:31:41 2021 at level 51:

Atrissa set down her harp and held the awkward pigtailed doll in her right
hand, staring at it curiously. It looked back at Atrissa with vacant blue
button eyes.

"What if your eyes were not blue, but silver, hm?" Atrissa said to the doll.

"Oh Atrissa, my eyes would be any color for youuuu!" Atrissa had the doll
say.

"Oh, is that right, Sharry?" replied Atrissa.

"Oh yes. I love you so much! You let me talk a lot and you tell me nice
things, even though I am cursed by stupid conjurers!" said the doll.

Atrissa replied, "Oh, but what if you had no eyes at all? Just empty
holes?"

Atrissa adjusted the marionette to appear to stand slightly hunched over,
causing its arms to hang forward. The doll said, "Yessss, my head isss
freeee from the buttonsss my shell once requiredssss."

Atrissa grinned. "And do I sate you, Ms. White?"

The doll replied. "Mssss. White knowssss Atrissa holds stringsss. Doesss
Atrissa know?"

Atrissa paused, then decided to readjust the doll. "But what if your eyes
were green, and you had black hair?" Atrissa hung part of her robe over
the doll's head as if her hair, and then smiled at it.

The doll thought of no reply.

Atrissa frowned, then said, "Oh, but what if I gave you this little picnic
basket and dunked you in water?" Atrissa splashed some water from her skin
onto the doll's head.

The doll replied, "I AM THE GODDESS OF DEATH, BOO!"

Atrissa laughed playfully, then said, "Oh Scarywey, what could you be up
to today?"

The doll replied, "I have no strings attached but the ones I hold,
Atrissa. Do you?"

Atrissa bit her lip, and the doll fell into her lap. "Dolls are stupid,"
she said under her breath, and put the marionette away.

After a moment Atrissa took the marionette back out and looked at it again.

"I think you are quite right, Atrissa," she then said aloud.

The Visit Home
Added Wed Nov 3 13:32:15 2021 at level 51:

As Atrissa entered her grand childhood home, she felt a familiar trepidation,
but seeing Gwendelya Tir'Randir with her helped ease her anxiety. It
was a clever idea, she thought. New faces always softened her mother's
propensity for barbs.

Her mother was immediately, quite predictably, taken with the majestic high
elf. "Is this that Lady Gwendolyn you've been telling me so much about?"

Before Atrissa could correct her, Gwendelya spoke gracefully, "Gwendelya
Tir'Randir, Mrs. Lansbrooke. It is a pleasure to finally meet you."

Her mother smiled warmly. "Atrissa has told me so much about you. I am so
grateful for how well you've take care of her." Gwendelya returned a kind
smile, and effortlessly steered the conversation to tales of Atrissa's
accomplishments. The three were soon comfortably sharing tea together.

"This child, goodness! Did the Gods ever curse and bless me. She was sooo
lazy and mischievous!" laughed her mother. Atrissa couldn't help but smirk.
"That sweet voice of hers got her out of everything, you truly wouldn't
believe!"

Atrissa noticed Gwendelya's amusement with her mother, and was pleased.
They would enjoy a good drink after this. Atrissa felt a small pang of
guilt for putting off her visit home for so long.

Her mother continued, "Oh, look at you, Atrissa, you are radiant! Just
beautiful. Finally put on some weight too." Her mom turned her to
Gwendelya again. "She truly used to look ever so waif-ish, don't you think?"

Atrissa laughed to herself as Gwendelya had no response. Her mother didn't
seem concerned for a reply, and continued on, now toward Atrissa again.

"Oh, Atrissa. I bet you have all those fans of yours in the palm of your
hand!" Atrissa smiled at her mother's kind words, but replied, "I grow old,
mom. I quite rely on my wit and harp now, truth be told."

Her mother was undeterred. "Oh, Atrissa, nonsense. You possess a most
captivating look. Not like some unattainable goddess, no, you are like
a friend's little sister, or a neighbor's daughter made gorgeous-"

"Mom!"

Her mother continued. "Oh, don't be naive. Men are quite taken with your
sort of look. My faith couldn't have been rewarded any more sweetly."

Atrissa sighed. Gwendelya placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "There
is more to me than being desireable, Mom."

"Oh, I am quite sure. But weren't things easy for you? I love you so much,
Atrissa."

Her mother turned her eyes to Gwendelya. "I prayed for her to be as pretty
and clever as she is, for things to be easy for her. It is truly hard for a
girl in this world. And just look at her! He truly answered my prayers."

Atrissa groaned audibly.

"He?" Gwendelya asked.

Her mom replied, "Well, yes. When I prayed for Atrissa, I prayed to Morius!"

Poetry Planning
Added Wed Nov 3 13:58:53 2021 at level 51:

Atrissa sat alone by the fire, tired and overwhelmed. It was a familiar
sensation, one she thought she'd been beyond for many years. She stared
at the hardwood planks on the floor blankly, looking at nothing. The Inn
was eerily quiet. Something specifically recent was gnawing at her, above
a greater gnawing mystery she'd dared not even think about.

"You would think I'd be more concerned about the taint of a dark God festering
inside me, than getting a song wrong," she whispered aloud.

But it was true. She had rushed to perform a song she had lovingly written for
the sweet black cat who had rewarded her, and her alone, with its measured
affection. If the gift was so important to her, why was she so careless as to
not even rehearse? Then, with a wince, her thoughts turned to her efforts to
help Shakiniel advance in her ranks, and to how careless she was of the
enemies who stalked Shakiniel, in the end costing the luckless bard yet
another brutal death. She sighed, her gaze still fixed downward.

Shadows from the tale-telling fire danced on the floorboards playfully, almost
mockingly. Atrissa suddenly felt a colossal fool. A notion once pleasing to
her was instead a gross misperception. Rarywey, Tsiynil, Wood-and-Bones...
they had all tried to help Atrissa realize it and she never did. Even just a
few days before, Rarywey had all but spelled it out. The dark calling to
slothfulness inside Atrissa was not a convenient price for artistry, it was
an anchor she'd been embracing and swimming with all along. She started to
feel sick, almost as if she'd vomit.

"I just wanted things to be easy for you," she recalled her mom saying.

Atrissa smiled at this. Things were far from easy. She made them hard. Her
carelessness made them hard. But so were her dreams. Her dreams were enormous
challenges, but she chose them, and she'd met them. Not because she dreamed
about them, because she...

"Oh," said Atrissa aloud.

Atrissa stood up, suddenly energized. What a bizarre poem her life was, but
there was still time yet. She pulled out pen and parchment and started a list,
doodling a little star and spyglass at the top. She was to plan her biggest
party yet, even if only a couple people would be invited.

"For someone with so thin a skin, you'd you think you'd show much less of it. And I was
talking about your dancing."

"Oh."

"No, your whole body, shoulders to heels, should be perpendicular to the ground, that is
not fourth position, Atrissa. Why are you even here? It is a bit late in your career to

"Yes, my weird show, too. Nnh! That's too much!"

Just go slow. No! Why are you trying an arabesque??"

"I don't know."

"What are you in such a rush for?"

"I have to do this... I am ever misreading and overcorrecting, this will be my last
overcorrection."

"Is this about the vomit business again?"

"She told me to vomit it out. The tree told me I have no roots, and that I only hear what
I want to hear. Then she told me I can't rewrite the stars. I've no idea what is expected
from me, I've no more patience for riddles. But I've songs that want to come out, and I do
not hold my songs back. This one, though, I can't perform without your help."

"Perhaps you search for riddles where there are none. You've a troubled mind, I think actually dance will help you focus. Now, stand again, back to fourth position. Just take it slow."

Little Gem
Added Tue Jan 11 10:06:40 2022 at level 51:

Atrissa had never felt such loneliness. Or was it disappointment?

Such a large group of friends, but so few who seemed to value her as more
than a lovely treasure. "Little gem" is what the strange sorceror Eluin had
called her, and she bristled at it. It made her conscious of the way so
many folks looked at her, and made her miss Gwendelya all the more. But
perhaps she was being too hard on her friends.

Atrissa stood back up on the Inn's quiet stage and waited.

Hurt appeared, and offered to dance. Atrissa took the hand of Ithyssraya
and waltzed with resentment and dismay. The one who revealed the secret
of her mother's prayer to Morius to her enemies. The one defended the
cruelties of Vlijerous with such blind preference. "If he hurt you beyond
tears, I would be more concerned," she had said. Incisive cuts from a
bullying harpy were one thing, but to be so succintly rated by a friend...

Pain cut in, and Atrissa obliged. Zxctikazxcti spun Atrissa this way and
that, stepping in then away, then returning. Burdening her with her wounds,
then heel-turning and murdering her friends.

Before Atrissa could note Pain's full movements, she spied Chaos, and could
not resist. Attrisa broke from Pain and took the hand of Dohri. Like Pain,
Chaos wished to claim Atrissa as a treasure for her own faction. Chaos
loved Atrissa, but would not fully let her in. Dohri hurt herself and
asked for aid she did not wish. Dohri was ever flickering in and out.

Warmth waited patiently for his turn, and Atrissa conceded. Aranir placed
one large hand softly but firmly on the small of her back, and deftly let
her lead. She felt burdened by all his gifts. She felt suspicious of his
compliments. He too would claim her. But he didn't. And he listened. And he
shared. A lovely dance partner. Why couldn't she let him lead?

Loss rudely cut in, then proceeded to sweep Atrissa off her feet. The long
missing High Herald Gwendelya led Atrissa across the stage with elven grace,
and Atrissa melted into her arms, forgetting herself. Suddenly, Atrissa
forced herself free, wiping back tears.

Atrissa stood motionless, and took a long sip straight from an emerald
bottle of rose wine.

She touched her hand to the silver spyglass branded on her neck. It had
cured the acceptance she discovered over Yuletide into a sad confidence.

She was pleased to be able to manage her maelstrom, but now seeing into
the stars more clearly than ever, recognized why fate was not so easily
charmed. She saw her future, and that of her friends, and it was all ever
so bittersweet.

Acute Vision
Added Fri Jan 14 12:53:13 2022 at level 51:

Gwendelya was back. And Atrissa was wishing she'd never returned.

Like something out of a storybook, the long missing High Herald made her
grand reappearance before a large crowd in the Inn just as an event was
beginning. Atrissa was overjoyed, and could barely contain herself. After
being so lonely for so long, Atrissa's best friend was back!

When the celebration fizzled out and all but her closest friends remained,
Atrissa made no effort to restrain her joy, singing and talking and hamming
it up as much as ever.

And then at last, a moment alone to catch up! Atrissa was so
enthusiastically eager to share all the good and bad things in the
overflowing way that Gwendelya had always let Atrissa do, but she
swiftly noticed that her eagerness was not returned. Gwendelya's cool
responses reminded Atrissa of the unimpressed responses she recevied from
Mrs. Vespertine the day she returned to Aubade full of pride. As did
Gwendelya's next, most painfully substantive, words.

"It's okay to be a performer, Atrissa. However, I should mention,
Calithildir and I fought for the position of High Herald, not because of
our performances or our ability to steal the spotlight, but because we
both helped other Heralds with their performances."

Shame and consternation flooded Atrissa's heart.

"Alas," she thought, "I am ever too much." Atrissa fled.

-

Alone again, Atrissa stared into the quiet night sky. The future had
come too fast.

How could she have never seen it?

"She is kind, yes," Atrissa remembered Rary saying, uttered with the
slightest hint of knowing smarm after Atrissa had probably praised the
high elf for the umpteenth time. Gwendelya was wonderful as ever... but
she was, Atrissa now saw, most ironically, Atrissa's own gem, treasured
and coveted for the way she made Atrissa feel. But Gwendelya made
everyone feel that way. Atrissa finally recognized that the reknowned
Expedition Leader never truly understood her, and whatever bond Atrissa
thought they shared was just... Gwendelya being kind. Atrissa let the
shame fill her. She soaked in its humiliating taunts - then welcomed an
energizing spark of anger within her.

-

She never helped other Heralds? Where was Gwendelya all this time to
know anything about that?? And did the most wonderful Calithildir ever
even attend any single performance of Atrissa's?

And stealing spotlights?? Would there be be any spotlights in that dead
Inn in the first place if not for Atrissa??

Atrissa turned her gaze forward and shook the hair out of her eyes. There
was freedom in loneliness, if loneliness in greatness. One notion Atrissa
Amethiste would not worry with was the idea of ever being... less.

Part II: Characterization and Goals
Added Thu Aug 19 07:41:41 2021 at level 19:

Characterization
* Aloof and self-involved, to those who try to win her favor with nothing of
benefit to her, Atrissa is often seen as selfish or oblivious.

* Lazy and dreamy, to those who rely on for anything, Atrissa is often seen
as spacey or useless.

* Impatient and confident, Atrissa can unpredictably assert herself if doing
so looks easier than relying on others.

* Entitled, arrogant, and spoiled, to those who disappoint her Atrissa can be
seen as spiteful, childish or cruel.

* Cynical yet playful, Atrissa is quick to bait laughter at the expense of others.

* Charming and clever, Atrissa can win friends with ease, even if her flaws make
her an otherwise poor friend in return.

* Never having had to truly work for anything, Atrissa does not appreciate
accomplishment or understand the fleetfulness of failure. When something goes
awry, others are to blame.

* Perceptive and bright, Atrissa is gifted with words equally incisive or
sensitive, but in the end she is only ever performing, never truly feeling.

Goal
Atrissa expects herself to be nothing less than the greatest living singer in
Thera. She does not see this as a goal, but a natural destination. The world
will embrace her as a great artist, and it should be pretty easy.

Atrissa will discover if the keen wit and latent tension within herself
creates the kind of vision that can make an artist great, or creates
the kind of complacent bitterness that can make an artist forgettable.

The Poem
Added Fri Oct 1 00:25:22 2021 at level 48:

The poem overwhelmed Atrissa. Here, in the dark mists of Maethien with Dargrin,
stuttering through standard songs of her guild that she hadn't rehearsed
sufficiently, a mysterious scroll appeared magically in her pocket.

While Dargrin desperately hacked and slashed at the nightwalker, Atrissa tried
to process the words of the poem. Was she the victim of some cruel pranking
thief in the shadows? Were these words the work of some dark deceptive god,
perhaps Morius?

The poem addressed her, commanded her, teased her... it was so different
compared to the encouraging and kind feeling she experienced with Rarywey,
yet it referenced things only Rarywey knew.

The first line of the poem particularly stung her: "How can you beg to be heard
when you are already so loud?" Was she begging? She didn't know what to beg for!
She replayed her sobs to Rarywey and Gwendelya... she revealed guilt for
wanting to be heard... oh, how humiliating...

The next line, "A deafening roar of what is and what ifs issues from you."
Atrissa didn't understand... vulverability before "Rary" under the stream was
not what she thought it was.

Then, it read "Where would you be on a stage with an audience with no ears?"
She recalled admitting to Gwendelya guilt for desiring to be heard, outside of
the shrine... Oh had she only never spoke!

Next, "Would your leisurely spirit croon candid or would you be cowed? "If no
one is listening, it doesn't matter what I do."" She had never said that! And
Atrissa Amethiste, cowed, on stage? This is why a performer should never step
out of character, even to an immortal, Atrissa thought.

Atrissa couldn't help but admire the funneling, streamlined structure of the
poem, as it grew more simple and direct. But all the more incisive.

"Your feet in the sand, ego divided. Find yourself weightless, flying unguided."

Atrissa acknowledged sincere bubbles of hurt, of sadness. Guidance was just
what she came to the goddess for. Guidance, confidence, warmth... all she
thought she'd received - all false?

"Write out your own verse and rehearse, rehearse." This was just salt in the
wound, thought Atrissa.

The distraction of the poem snowballed within Atrissa, and she found herself
watching her companions depart the mists, while she clung to a teleport potion,
too embarrassed to admit to them how careless she was. After they were gone,
Atrissa drank the potion, and found herself locked alone in a dungeon.

"Your lazy spirit should have practiced how to pick locks," the poem seemed to
say to her.

Succumbing
Added Thu Sep 30 23:44:10 2021 at level 48:

As the cold water surrounded her, Atrissa felt an amused smile form on her face.
How her friends from Aubade would have laughed, if only they could see their
cynical and fickle ringleader now. Atrissa Lansbrooke, enjoying a religious
experience!

Succumbing to the water had a lovely effect. Unlike wine, which helped Atrissa
forget her noisy thoughts, the feeling of drifting alone in the river merely
softened them. She was indeed a mess, but it was quite fine, she decided.
Underwater at her shrine, Rarywey helped Atrissa accept and appreciate this,
and it wasn't long after her time with Rarywey that Atrissa searched for that
feeling again.

As she rhythmically slipped under, up, and under again, Atrissa considered
the soft mysteries that swirled in her mind. They now seemed merely to be
bubbles racing each other to get to the forefront of her consciousness. They
were forgotten easily, losing each time to the pleasant feeling of controlled
balance in and out of the water's surface.

The emotions bound to those thoughts lingered, but Atrissa was calmed by the
one revelation that encompassed her: contradictory though it may seem, who
Atrissa was, was a performer. Rarywey made it seem so simple, but Atrissa
accepted that she needed to hear it, to feel it. It was so reassuring to
realize *what* she needed to figure out - everything else could unfold in time.
Who she was underneath the surface was up to her.

Who she was underneath the surface was up to her.

Atrissa remembered that she liked the abrasive, detached persona of Atrissa
Amethiste, and wondered why she did. She smiled as she remembered what else she
liked... being with her friends at the Inn, discovering the perfect turn of
phrase, catching the light of realization in the eyes of the audience, cake...

Atrissa remembered that she liked the abrasive, detached persona of Atrissa
Amethiste, and wondered why she did. She smiled as she remembered what else she

An audible laugh escaped her lips, forcing Atrissa to lift herself forward out
of the water and take in a deep breath. She wiped her wet hair back behind her
head and gazed down at her reflection in the water. "What a busy mind you have,"she said aloud to herself.

"Hm," she said aloud. What if her busy, busy mind was the reason her body was
always so tired? Atrissa liked that idea. In fact, the more she thought about
it, the more she realized that who she is, who she's been all along... was
because of that very collection of busy bubbles always swirling within her.

Atrissa climbed out of the water and put on dry clothes, suddenly so much more
comfortable in her skin. She doubted anything could overwhelm her now.

A Sincere Turn
Added Tue Sep 28 14:22:00 2021 at level 47:

Atrissa stood silently in the room, overwhelmed with shame. Long since cleaned
but for a few visibly stubborn stains, the site of those dried blemishes of
burgundy nonetheless sent chills through her body. Chills that would prove
equally stubborn to be removed.

Skreenak had torn through the Knight's Crest in an attempt to kidnap a woeful
band of troubadours and force them to sing at his court. Atrissa knew that it
could have been her, and worse, she knew that a part of her had wanted it to be.
He, at least, appreciated her. So long ago on that same stage she had indeed
relished his threats and praise, and had even crafted a song to please him at
her next upcoming performance. But she had never thought that his threats were
real. She dropped the draft of her song about a bird choosing to be caged but
heard by a band of goblins onto the floor, watching as its slide across the
floor was halted by one of the dried blood stains.

For a moment, Atrissa's heart lightened, as she remembered that she was
fortunate enough that her next performance in Hamsah, which she had so
foolishly boasted of directly to the Goblin King, was at least at a celebration
of deities at the Sultan's palace. There would be no shortage of protection, and
gods willing, no shortage of competing deities.

But the chills swiftly returned. How shamelessly indignant was she to plan a
performance daring to mock the sultan and the beliefs of the devout? Was she so
spiteful just because he'd twisted her arm into performing for free? How
ignorant was she to not realize how sincerely sinister the Goblin King was? Was
it just because a harmlessly mad cheesemaker whom she loathed happened to
worship him?

Once again, Atrissa found herself overwhelmed. Not just with confusion and
doubt, but with shame and despair. Luckily for her, Gwendelya happened to be
right by her side. She was happy to hold Atrissa's hand on their pilgramage to
Ar'touldain, where perhaps Atrissa could find some clarity about the performer,
rather than her audience, once and for all.

Restless Artistry
Added Thu Sep 16 14:14:53 2021 at level 38:

Atrissa sat at the bar of the Inn alone, drowning in emotions and thoughts.
She had just stumbled through her live performance in Voralia, with none
other than Rarywey, and a most unexpected guest, the Goblin King himself.
And despite her missteps, by all accounts her songs were most well received.

But Atrissa knew herself well, and well she was not. So many things in her
life were proceeding even better than she had imagined, but she found
herself increasingly distracted.

She was distrubed by the creepy behavior of Alyce, who pressured Atrissa
to learn more about Morius. Thumbing through the "Vitriasic Faith," Atrissa was
horrified and haunted. Did Alyce truly believe Atrissa to be
capable of the fiction she sung about? "The Source of Your Flame," a tale
of a girl slashing a man's eyes for staring at her too much, was surely obvious
fantasy. And then it was Alyce, effervescent beacon of darkness herself, who
told Atrissa, "your songs really highlight the worst in people, don't they?"

Atrissa soon wondered again about her mysterious murderer, Harlendra. She had
invited her to her performance, but did not find her, and she realized
that Harlendra maybe occupied Atrissa's mind more than Atrissa did hers.

Atrissa then recalled her uncharacteristic anxiety before her Voralian
performance, and how so few from Thera had come to hear her sing. If not for
the divine presences who arrived, how humiliated would she have been? And then
how weak was Atrissa, to rely on the whims of commoners to shape her mood?

She stared down at the warm puddle of brie and strawberries nestled at her
feet, and grew angry. The so-called "Cheese King" had the nerve to leave Thera
right before her performance started, oh-so-busy with all his cheese-spreading.
But just as Atrissa finished spitefully collecting all his cheese into a trunk
labeled "BURN ME," she was called back to the Inn.

It was Rarywey again, with kind praise and a divine gift for Atrissa's
performances. The moment lingered with Atrissa like a warm embrace. Her
thoughts in turn shifted to Gwendelya, whom she recalled with equal fondness,
replaying more moments of sincere joy, like when they tried on outfits in the
depths of Velkyn Oloth or when they first traded stories by the fire.

But it was all so much. Atrissa Amethiste was an effortless elegist, blessed
with incisive wit and flowing depth, who wanted nothing more than endless
amusement and fame. But Atrissa Lansbrooke was trying to make an appearance,
and she had no idea what she wanted.

A Distracting Inspiration
Added Mon Sep 13 10:28:01 2021 at level 32:

As Atrissa sipped her wine by the cozy fireplace of her new home, The Inn of
the Eternal Star, she considered all the happenings she'd recently enjoyed. A
successful debut performance in Galadon, an invitation to join the Heralds
as a singer (in internship as a barkeep required), and a new performance
lined up at The Knight's Crest in Voralia City.

But it was the one unpleasant happening that she could not get out of her
mind. When she was shopping for some accessories for her outfit for her show, a
silent killer stepped from the shadows and ruthless shoved a blade into
her gut, then mercilessly ran Atrissa down and finished her. Atrissa could
not recall virtually anything about her killer except that it was a young woman,
and that she was really, really fast. And the she discovered the most
curious thing, a card with a bad poem left amongst her things.

Why was she attacked? How come she couldn't get away? What in the world
was the intent of that poem?? As the days went on Atrissa learned more
the killer's reputation, and was inspired to write a song. One in which,
rather boldly, she thought, she featured her subject by name.

It was but a few days later when, just before Atrissa meaned to take her
rest, a magristrate warned her that the killer herself was on the loose!
Atrissa did not know if she was being stalked at that moment in Galadon,
but she saw fit to share her song with the town. The short verse went
over with little fanfare it had seemed, until several days later when
Atrissa received a mysterious letter. Signed from Harlendra herself,
it seemed Atrissa had won a fan.

Good Publicity
Added Mon Aug 30 11:48:23 2021 at level 27:

Things had been going pretty well for Atrissa. She'd manage to progress well in the
bard's guild without expending too much effort, and had great success collecting some
very valuable jewelry, garments, and instruments without the tedium or danger of
exploration or battle. She'd loved her freedom out in the world, and was quick to
make some powerful friends who were happy to have her company. She'd even managed to
secure her first performance, even if not yet at a venue befitting her talent. But
Atrissa knew winning the spotlight immediately at a place like the Eternal Star would
require a horrendous amount of effort - at least a stint as a barmaid or waitress.
Performing for peanuts at dives like Bargalha's Tavern certainly wasn't glamorous,
but it was easy.

Alas, just as Atrissa was feeling at her most arrogant happiest, the world reminded
her that not everyone is willing to be a fan of hers. She'd been unable to win the
friendship of any of the Battle Ragers, especially the assassin Ashrisos, who would
have been ever so helpful to have on her side in the shadows. When one is performing
in dives with no bouncers, after all, one can use all the protection one can
get. And it was protection she lacked when a bloodthirsty wood-elf from Ashrisos'
same village exacted violent retribution on Atrissa after she dared to return insults
to him when he threatened her life. It was an incident that would have been resolved
far more pleasantly with her charm, but sycophancy in the face of disrespect was one
role Atrissa did not like to perform.

And so, ahead of her first public performance, Atrissa's mood was swiftly dampened.
The satisfaction of having convinced the Eternal Star's own expedition leader to copy
and distribute her performance posters so she wouldn't have to herself was long gone.
But as Atrissa bathed herself in her bitterness, she got an idea. Unjust murder, she
remembered, was always great publicity.

72788, Atrissa's Role Chapter 1
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM

Role

Chapter 1

Part I: Background and Motivations
Added Thu Aug 19 07:39:44 2021 at level 19:

Background
Things always came easy to Atrissa Lansbrooke. The only child of an esteemed
Galadonian family, she wasn't spoiled or overly praised at home, but it didn't
matter. Her charm and wit always made it easy for her to acquire whatever she
wanted with as little effort as possible.

Despite her mother's best efforts, Atrissa grew into a rather selfish and self-
involved young woman. She was a gifted student, and coasted through her
lessons with averages marks and little studying. She grew to look down on those
who expended so much effort just to perform as well as her. She expected
gifts and praise, and though rarely disappointed, when she was, she would lash
out with violent outbursts or incisive insults. It was to both her and her
mother's relief that Atrissa's natural skill with music won her acceptance
to the Aubade school, where she could indulge her desire for praise from all,
and hopefully also refine her manner.

While the former goal was met, the latter was a different case. Free from the
knowning eye of her mother, Atrissa was able to fully use her gifts to satisfy
her whims, and learned, with great satisfaction, that a gifted artist need not
work very hard in this world. Upon graduating, she gave herself the stage
name "Atrissa Amethiste," and set out to enjoy the fruits of being a great
songstress in Thera.

Motivations
* Atrissa wishes to obtain fame and fortune with as little effort as possible.
or more accurately, she expects to. When things fail to fall in place as easily
as she is accustomed to, she can react with seemingly unpredictable extremes.

* Atrissa wants to play, not work. Singing, dancing, shopping, reading, writing,
drinking, entertaining - these are activities she wishes to spend her time on
(and she certainly has no issue with spending her time doing nothing at all).
One might not expect her to be impatient for her desires, but she is all
the same.

* Atrissa loves the thrill of performing and the adulation of an audience, but
she loathes the tedium that can come with obtaining an audience (really
anything that has to typically be earned).

* If Atrissa sees someone who can help make things easier for her in any way,
she is quickly interested and engaged, and skilled at manipulating them
to her designs. Likewise, she easily be won over or manipulated by such
people.
