Description

A relatively short man with a muscular build stands here.
His head is shaved, though there is a small amount of regrowth.
What little there is forms a widow's peak of dark brown fuzz.

His eyes are a sharp grayish-blue with a deep intensity.
His facial features are relatively nondescript - not a beautiful
man nor an ugly one. Someone who would blend into a crowd quite well.

His armor and weaponry are clean and well-kept - no rust or stains.
The metal pieces are not polished, as if dulled apurpose to avoid
any shiny spots that might draw notice. The leathers are dark and
relatively form-fitting.

Chapter 6

Voices From the Past

Hikadata's stance during the debate between Fear and Hope was that neither matters.
Hope and Fear both can influence behavior, but in the end it is the behavior itself
that truly means anything. What small insight you can gain from the motives is mostly
of no use. A lost child might fear death, or may hope to find his father. But either
way, the child's fate will not be decided by his fear or his hope.

Hikadata put emphasis on the final words of his argument by killing an elven child
that had wandered into the Inn.

That's when things started to go wrong.

As the event was being hosted by the Vindicator Dollerveim, Hikadata's chances of
becoming a Provincial Magistrate are now jeopardized. Dollerveim is unhappy with him,
and claims that Hikadata has made it look as if the Spire are all cold-blooded murderers.

More ominous, though, are the voices that Hikadata has begun to hear since the incident.

Nicha. A nightmare-parody of her voice, gurgling wetly as if wheezing from her drowned
corpse. Chiding him. Suggesting that he should drown himself.

Solitude, sleep, drink, whoring - none of these selfish indulgences have made the
voice disappear for long. Hikadata has made a fool of himself in front of fellow
magistrates and other adventurers, slurring his words while drunk and singing at
the top of his lungs to try to drown out her voice.

Hikadata either does not see the connection between his murder of the elven child
or, more likely, does not want to see it. Will not allow himself to see it. The
guilt that he had buried deeply, that he is responsible for the death of Nicha...
that guilt has been exhumed from whence it was buried and laid out raw in the baking
sun.

Speech

Hikadata's speech varies slightly from most, due to his upbringing to the far west.
Though he has always spoke the common tongue, his culture has the following variances:

A respected person should always be addressed by his or her title, if applicable.

A respected elder without any particular title should receive the honorary -sama
at the end of their name. An elder does not necessarily have to mean someone older.
For example, an officer of the military might be a young man with an older soldier
under his command. The young officer should still receive the -sama honorific from
the grizzled soldier.

One who is respected and roughly the same status should receive the -san honorific.

One who is respected and of lesser status should receive the -kun honorific.
In the previous example, the officer would use this for the grizzled soldier.

At times, one who is of greater status may, in a show of great respect, refer
to one of lesser status as -san. Similarly one of equal status may refer to
the other as -sama to offer great honor.

One other speech affectation is Hikadata's word to indicate an affirmative
response. Rather than "aye" or "yes," Hikadata will respond with "Hai."

Background Story 3

In the years that passed, Hikadata's entire demeanor changed from that brazen
rule-breaking child. He now contemplated his actions with great care, hoping
to avoid further dishonor and shame. He spent a great deal of time alone,
working on his kata. He read works of famous authors, and took great care in
making his appearance clean and unassuming.

He came to find great comfort in this orderly lifestyle. A place for everything,
everything in its place, no wasted movements or speech.

He might have eventually become a monk, but did not find himself overly religious.
What God would he worship? Or rather, what God would find worth in him?

The divide that had separated him from his parents had not decreased, though not
for lack of trying on their part. Once he was old enough to enroll in the Academy,
he formally requested his parents' permission to travel to the main continent.

With only a small amount of money, his trip was not a luxurious one. He worked the
trip to help pay for his passage, and once here, he was put ashore in the midst of
a jungle to the west of Galadon.

Hacking his way through chaotic undergrowth, he finally reached a clearing. That's
when he saw the Spire. Shrugging his pack into a more comfortable position on his
shoulders, he set off toward the city with a grim determination.

Background Story 2

Hikadata sat, alone in his room, staring at himself in a mirror. He held
his father's razor in his hand.

Father had tried to breathe life into Nicha's little lungs. He tried for
what seemed like hours. But her skin remained that bluish-grey, and the
life had left her eyes. Hikadata would never forget it.

Mother had tried to console him, to convince him that it was an accident
and it was not his fault. But he could see the lie in her face. He could
feel the accusation in every movement his parents made. They spoke of
forgiveness while body language and awkward silences spoke of damnation.

And so, the razor. Perhaps he should use it to rid them of his worthless
hide. The funeral had been difficult. Weeks had passed. Mother and Father
were trying to return to 'normal.' Whatever that was. Hakidata was useless.
Better to end it.

Shame rose in his chest and boiled to his scalp. To deprive them of the
only child they had left? A coward's thought. How could he consider it?
The shame feeling made his mangy mop of hair feel greasy. Hot. It disgusted
him.

He began cutting. He hacked away at the hair until it was no longer anything
that could properly be called a haircut. Not enough. He kept at it. Pull
it away from the scalp and cut it as close as possible.

Before long he had only patches of hair. Clumps here and there. And several
cuts on his scalp. More.

Some time (minutes? hours?) later, Mother came to check on him. And screamed.
Blood streamed from dozens of cuts on his freshly-shaven head.

Background Story 1

Hikadata was boisterous and fun-loving as a child, often coming home
later than he was supposed to and filthy from playing where he wasn't
supposed to be. He was especially proud of his mop-top of unruly hair,
and threw a tantrum anytime his mother tried to trim it.

His younger sister would often accompany him on his "adventures," though
she was much more shy and reserved and would often hang back, causing
Hikadata to cajole and prod her to have some fun in her life.

One week before his eleventh birthday, the siblings strayed further from
home than usual. His sister, Nicha, called to him.

"Hika-chan! We should turn back!"

Hikadata shouted back that he just wanted to go a little further and was
soon crossing a swift stream that seemed quite shallow by walking across
a narrow log. As he walked up to the tree-line of the far bank, he turned
to see Nicha fretting over the crossing.

"Come on, slowpoke! Let's see what is over here!" he called. When his
sister did not move, he grumbled and turned around.

He reached the halfway point of the log and held out his hand. "Come on,
Nicha, just walk out to me. It's easy, see?"

With one wistful look back the way they had come, Nicha edged slowly out
over the stream, fretfully looking down at the narrow log.

"See? You can do it. Just take my hand." Hikadata coaxed her.

As their fingertips met, Nicha's front foot slipped from the log. With
a frightened scream, she was soon swept up in the stream's strong current.
Her fall jarred Hikadata loose from the log as well, sending him careening
into the icy waters.

"This stream is deeper than it looked." was the last thought he had before
he was swept along after his sister.
