Description

A soft glow surrounds this young man, as his skin seems to shine from
within. Wavy, golden hair hangs loosely to his shoulders, also with
a slight glow. The internal light shines most brightly through his
golden irises. Aside from this inner radiance, he has looks like an
an average human, but a little bit taller than most. The light armor
he wears looks slightly marred from combat. While his hands retain
a firm grip on his weapon, his face retains a subtle smile. An ornate
wooden pendant hangs around his neck, intricately carved and painted
to look like a copse of pine trees.

Chapter 6

Teaching

Feeling uncertain of himself, Garful of course turned to Lady Padwei.
After being directed towards the Psalm of the Maran in the Hall of Light,
his path finally became clear. The fierce angel and the compassionate
farmer finally made peace with each other. This inner tranquility is
what he needed to confidently move forward. Shortly after, he was made
a Maran.

This was his lifelong dream. Now he is fighting evil with a zeal like
he has never felt before. However, he also realizes that he will not
be able to fight forever. He sees part of his job as a Maran is to
prepare the next generation. That is how he learned and he will continue
the cycle.

Chapter 5

Garful's Summer

Just as a year has four seasons, Garful often thinks of the four seasons
of a life. Spring, summer, fall, and winter are like childhood,
adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Garful's favorite season has always
been the fall. Fall is when all the hard labor of the summer would bear
its fruits. For a year, that means picking apples. For a Garful's life,
it means becoming a Maran.

While meditating near the pool in the desert one night, Garful realized
he was trying to skip his life's summer. He had been charging fearlessly
into battle as he'd seen great Maran do. What he was forgetting is that
they weren't always able to do that. It was something that came with many
years of training. Before he could become a great Maran, he was going to
have to become a great Squire.

Garful is working on this in two ways, to appease his human and angelic
sides. His human side has always wanted to nurture, to help life grow.
For this side, he trying to better understand the cultures of the evil
races. He wants to find a way to make something good grow out of the
darkness. The angel in him wants to cut down any that would harm the
light. To this end, Garful is determined to gain more experience in
combat. Only when his tactics have been refined will he be ready for
more dangerous enemies.

Seeing that he was trying to skip a season of his life has made Garful
more comfortable with where he is in life. While he looks forward to
being a veteran soldier, but he's realized it's not that season yet. Now
is his summer. If the goal for his fall is to be a Maran, hes got some
work to do during his summer.

Chapter 4

Doubt and Determination

Somewhat disheartened by recent defeats, Garful returned to Seven Pines to
meditate. He remembered how his father had encouraged him to be a healer
instead of a shaman. As a boy, Garful wouldn't go hunting with his father
because he didn't want to kill. It wasn't until he was much older that he
understood hunting wasn't about taking a life, but about providing for
others. That's part of why Garful wanted to be a shaman and why his father
didn't think he had it in him.

The problem now wasn't an internal conflict of morality, as Garful truly
believes in his cause. However, he has began to doubt his abilities. The
enemies he has been facing included trained Imperials and conjurers with
demons by their sides. He knew the war would be tough, but never imagined
it would be this difficult. After a long look inward, Garful felt he had
been naive.

A ray of hope came as Ajanfindel sent a missive about training classes.
This was exactly the type of thing Garful thought could help. The only way
he could see himself becoming the soldier of light he wants to be is with
serious training. While still a bit uncertain of himself, Garful is
determined not to give up. He sees this as just the beginning of a long,
hard journey.

Chapter 3

Weeding the Garden of Light

Making the move to Voralian City was scary for the farm boy who had barely
ventured out of Seven Pines, but Garful was determined to become a soldier
of the light. Grumbar Ironbeard saw potential in him and initiated Garful
into the shaman's guild.

Grumbar saw Garful needed to find focus in his prayers and instructed him
to meditate. The azure-touched teenager returned to the gazebo surrounded
by flower gardens that was home to many fond memories of his life before
the accident. Remembering the simpler times brought him peace and clarity.

As Garful sat, contemplating his path, he noticed a strangle vine creeping
into one of the gardens. The vine was beginning to grow up a young shrub
and would smother it if not removed. This was Garful's moment of revelation.
He jumped to his feet and ripped the invasive vine from the ground, saving
the shrub so its flowers could bloom.

A New Outlook on Life

The near-death experience left Garful changed, both physically and
spiritually. More than ever, he appreciated every day of life. He was
very grateful to the goddesses of light that answered his father's
prayers. The best way to pay them back, he thought, was to spread this
joy and appreciation for life to others.

The new appreciation for life came at a price. No longer could Garful
ignore the wicked. Their very presence now burned his eyes with an eerie
red glow. Garful knew he had been given this power so he could hunt those
that threatened the light. He quit his job as an apple picker to become
a crusader.

Chapter 1

An Accident in the Orchard

The sun was setting on an old farmhouse in Seven Pines. A farmer sat
smoking his pipe, waiting for his son who was working late picking
apples. A cat laid lazily next to a shrine to the Goddesses of light.
The peacefulness was suddenly broken by the door flying open and two
teenagers carrying in their friend, Garful.

There was an accident in the orchard. Garful was working from the top
of an old ladder when a rung broke. The fall had left him badly bruised
and unconscious. The other apple pickers carried him all the back home
and got him to his bed.

For days, the boy's condition showed no signs of improvement. His father
prayed and prayed for his son to wake up. Suddenly, there was a bright
flash that streaked from the altar to Garful. Slowly, his body started
to glow, his hair turned from black to gold, and his eyes opened, golden
and bright. The farmer's prayers had been answered.
