Description

Your eye is first drawn to the intricate lines of dull white that flow
across this man's onyx skin. They take shape as a cobra with its hood up
and ready to strike upon his right arm and a large spider moving upon its
web on his left. The tattoos are fully connected by geometric patterns that
traverse all of his visible skin. Dark brown eyes look out from a mask of
white ink that covers his face from his forehead to the top of his upper
lip before finishing as two fangs that run from the corner of his mouth
to his chin. Narrow scars mar the top of his head that has been shaven
and oiled to a dull shimmer. Traces of his heritage show in his slightly
pointed ears and his height that just reaches five and a half feet. A cord
of animal gut hangs loosely from his neck holding a dozen hollow fangs
angled away from his body. Simple furs of dark browns and grays shroud
his thin frame from chest to legs. A crude leather belt rests tightly
against him and is covered in vials and pouches of varying sizes
and shapes.

Reflections

Zydeki leaned his back against the rough bark of the Tree and took a brief
respite from his hunting. Since he first spoke with the augur and learned
of the First Law, he had been in constant motion trying to see it come to
fruition. He had spent many hours training himself to be strong enough
to thrive against civilization. Now that he took a moment to settle down
and reflect, he seemed to be filling in the mantle that was used to scare
children to sleep. He was the Nightreaver and so far he thought he was
living up to the demands of the position. He was sure if he was not, he
would be a corpse feeding the Tree for the Lord of Bones. Still, he had
hoped to see more young ones with a desire to rend and reap as he had
what seemed like a long time ago. There was little to be done, as that
desire could not be forced upon someone and Zydeki wouldn't even if he
could. It would be wrong, for one, but also would never be as strong
as the strength one finds when they discover their true purpose.

He had just seen that when a young Cloud Giant spoke words to him that
proved Zydeki's previous statement lacking. There was truth and power
in those who were after their true purpose, and Zydeki was still young
enough to know to learn from all around him. He still hoped to
strengthen the roots of the Tree, but he would try to do it with those
that would last longer than spring flowers before the summer sun.

Chapter 2

Awakenings

The metallic scent of blood filled his nostrils as his eyes shot open in
a deep panic. The sky had turned from first light to pitch black and only
the cursed heritage of his father let him see well enough to take in the
carnage. He pushed a body off of him that had turned cold to find his
entire tribe dead. A slaughter had come while he was in his vision. A
wash of emotions flowed through him. He thought of guilt but dismissed it.
He was only a guide, the Darkfang tribe was strong and anything that had
fallen upon them must have been fierce. Anger pulsed inside him without
target or focus as he saw no sign of what had brought this. Finally, a
pang of loneliness came. He would be the last of his tribe. The thought
of reforming it never came to him. The deep burning within would guide
him to a future day where he would find who had destroyed his tribe and
he would unleash his vengeance upon them.

Several sets of bites marked his wrists and frustration filled his eyes.
His vision swam in the smoke but only a single image would appear before
him. He saw three carved bones lying on a green oak leaf. He did not
understand, but knew that this is where the spirits guided him. He packed
food and water and walked through the gates a man now, not even barred
entry from his past of this foul town. He smiled as he released the bag
of deadly vipers upon the central fountain of Udgaard. He quietly entered
the Academy and his smile only widened as he heard the screams behind him.

Zydeki's time was quick there as he found the book of religions and in
it his calling to the Natural Laws of Lord Ergush. The shaman guildmaster
saw the building fervor in his eye and showed him what he could choose if
desired. He would let his vision's guide him and seek out the Haruspex. He
would learned how to harness the power of his new found Lord and bring it
down upon the civlized. He may just smile while doing it. The knowledge
of the tribe that served his Lord, the Outlanders, was even more
pleasing to learn of. His faith in his visions felt well placed.

Chapter 1

Smoke

Zydeki leaned forward into the smoke of the fire and took a deep breath.
The familiar burning filled his lungs as he closed his eyes. As the last
step in the ritual, he snapped the viper's mouth on to his wrist and let
the poison begin its work. He threw the viper away and the smoke vanished
from his view as he felt the vision take him.

Zydeki was floating above a younger version of himself. A dread grew in
his stomach as he knew that the ritual had gone wrong. The visions had
always served his tribe from guiding their movements for defense and raids
to helping establish leadership or finding the herbs needed for cures.
They had never focused on himself. He wanted to scream and did as he
watched old memories flow by. It was him as an unwanted half-drow babe
left on the streets to die outside of a whorehouse. The weaker memories
skimmed by as glimmers before another strong one took his focus. He saw
the assorted mothers of Udgaard helping raise him until their husbands
found out and he was passed along to another. They dissolved and it was
him at the age of four surviving on the streets as he fought and stole
for the meagerest bits of food. Next he was five with blood on his hands
as he hid the corpse of a young boy and ate the boy's crust of bread. Light
dimmed then returned and he was being thrown out the east gate at seven for
filching an apple. He cursed the guards and their cruelty as they kicked
at him when he tried to sneak back in. A quick shift and he watched as the
tribes on the plains rejected him. He was too much like his father, or too
much like his mother, or too willing to take by any means what would not
be shared.

Light dimmed then brightened as the elder, Ksayel, lifted his starving
form from the edge of the river and took him deep into the dark shadows
east of the river. The water spread through the dense trees to form a swamp
with little sun and few people. The vision shifted to show him studying
animals and herbs and what they caused when ingested, smoked, or smeared
into a wound. The light blurred and it was him at twelve training with
weapons with just enough of an edge to make you want to avoid their touch.
His sight shifted to and he filled with pride as he received his first
tattoo of the cobra on his right arm for his vision and the raid that
came of it. The last clear sight was of him now, properly covered in
the ink of the Darkfang people as their spiritual guide through these
lands. Before he could feel relief, his sight dimmed to black and he
fell to unconsciousness.
