A slender half-drow stands here with an impeccable posture and chin
held high. He is well-groomed with long, flowing white hair. He wears
many bright leathers, which all look exceedingly clean. His skin also
is smooth and clean, however the left side of his face sags in an
uncomfortable display of asymmetry. Cold red eyes stare out from a

Herodom and Entry into the Spire

A few titles short of Grand Master of Changelings, Slarin let slip to
Provost Gnimos that he was traveling with Pawit and a chaotic soul.
Pawit was promptly removed from the Spire. Slarin questioned the
Provost, expecting to be shut down and disregarded. Instead, Gnimos
spoke without arrogance and gave a compelling inside into the argument
that had led to the dismissal. This was appreciated.

Shortly thereafter, Gnimos rested, and Provincial Kira introduced herself
to Slarin. She was in search of souls, and wished to enlist shapeshifters
to scout the air for victims. Slarin responded favorably, and said he
expected to pledge to the Spire upon Gnimos's return. Not long after,
Kira found Slarin in his natural form beneath Galadon, and took advantage.
After the slaughter, she placed a trinket in his corpse to try to retain
favor. He rejected her words (but donned the trinket) and brought the
matter to the Provost. Gnimos investigated and demoted Kira.

The handling of these affairs impressed Slarin, and he committed his
pledge to the Tribunal. The Provost promptly interviewed him and welcomed
him to their ranks, on condition he could serve amicably with (or under)
Kira. He agreed, yet still anticipates retaliation.

Slarin is thus far impressed with Gnimos, slightly embarrassed at being
the unwitting catalyst of Pawit's demise, and wishes nothing more to do
with Kira.

Chapter 1

Background

Orphaned at a young age, Slarin had a rough childhood in the streets
of a modest human settlement. He was constantly mocked by other children
and disfavored by adults for being a half-breed and for his congenital
facial paralysis. As he worked, begged and stole to get by, he developed
hatred for the good fortune of others and deep envy of the noble lords.

To have such a dignified position would be to feel proud and whole.


Upon maturation, Slarin set out with a trade caravan. He had no ambition
beyond escaping a tortured existence. Inspiration was to be found at a
great city with its own arena, where all manner of creatures tested their
might. It was at this arena that Slarin first witnessed shapeshifting;
a meager gnome morphed into a mighty lion and ripped a man to shreds.
He immediately became obsessed with the goal of mastering this art,
consumed by the idea of changing out the hand dealt to him by nature.

To control his own form would be to never feel shame or loneliness again.


Slarin ascended quickly through the ranks of the shapeshifters' guild,
dedicated utterly to reaching its pinnacle. He was hounded by predators
along this journey, who served as constant reminders how weak he truly
was. This struggle to progress in peace, along with friendly Magistrate
Pawit, prompted Slarin to consider service in the Blood Tribunal. He
liked what he saw: a loud cabal. People whose presences were unmistakable,
who strutted their turf flanked by guards, demanding peace and compliance
or else. Slarin wanted a badge. He wanted lieutenants. He wanted his
role and authority declared on his behalf to people who had not yet even
laid eyes on him. He wanted to be .
