Stahl the Slayer of Infidels
DescriptionTo say that this man cuts an imposing image would be a rash first impression. His presence does not command the attention of those around him as foretold by every insipid heroic legend associated with knighthood. It would be more accurate to note that his presence is rather more unnerving in it's near motionless manner of interacting with the surrounding world. His posture is stern, controlled. His eyes a calm blue seem distant and unengaged with the world before them. Honey blond hair conservatively cropped and well kempt. Well polished armor is mostly concealed by the remnants of a tattered tabard that seems to stand out in it's decayed state.

68656, Stahl's Role Chapter 4
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 4 The feast Added Thu Dec 17 19:11:21 2020 at level 19:Since I left the Keep I have wandered. Set adrift in the mire of Thera without cause. Proclaiming myself an adherent to the code not for any great inborn nobility but because it had been the path laid out for my life since I was but a child.
As I waded through the thickets of the Weald on a fool's errand at the behest of some baudy ascetic from the temple of the Loch to find ingredients I encountered a very strange half-blood, cooing and howling like a crazed animal. Scyreth was his name. I've always had a soft spot for his kind, whether in my heart or on my skull had always been hotly debated among my peers among the Keep.
Though the Code strictly forbids any association with those deemed evil I found myself overwhelmed by an inexplicable draw to heeds his claims that he would show me where to find that which I sought, and a fine dinner to boot. In my gut I knew this to be some foul trickery, some manner of leading me astray from my destined path. But that morbid curiousity took hold, and some part of me naively believed a faint glimmer of light deep within his soul was shining through his dark heart, some small dying ember of good I could rekindle.
At first it seemed benign. He walked me through the weald showing me things which I had never before seen including the things which I had come to see. Then he lead me to a dark temple and though every fiber of my being shook with trepidation I still could not break myself from the path he set before me.
As the dreaded god of sin, Morius tore through the seams of reality it became all too clear what the intentions of this dinner were and yet by now my feet stood firmly in place, my eyes locked forward to meet the face of the blind god. The blind pontiff chastised me for my desire to change Scyreth. Claiming him to be utterly pure. He had a point, Scyreth was pure. A true monster lost to his own ravenous hunger and twisted by the whims of fate. There is truly no purpose in chaning the course any man willing walks.
I was then given a choice. Flee with my life or remain to be served upon a platter, consumed quite literally by the darkness. The Code enforces that a crusader never flee in the face of evil for his own sake, and pleading for my life seemed utterly pathetic. So there I remained My body died, eviscerated by this deity and fed upon by his sick dog. My spirit remained tethered to this world and as I watched them revel in the decadent feast of flesh I realized my own arrogance in ever thinking one so lost could be found again. The only merciful resolution for one so far gone is death.

68655, Stahl's Role Chapter 3
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 3 Conclusion and Summary Added Wed Dec 9 21:37:33 2020 at level 1:The following years Stahl spent at the keep were unremarkable. He was questioned relentlessly by his elders and his peers of course. Though he never acknowledged them, in his mind the matter was settled and he could only pray his friend had found some measure of peace in the afterlife.
He continued his studies dilligently and though many still held his character suspect, his record as a trainee stood to dissaude the dismissal of recommendation when he began to pursue the guild of paladins.
It was only natural that he would dedicate himself to a cause so noble and yet it didn't quite ring true. There still remained a burning question in his heart. To part with one so dear to him was a harrowing experience that has never left him. And yet it brought solace, and not only to himself. His choice was both cruel and merciful in equal measures, but to who did each aspect of that ultimatum truly belong?
(Summary)
Stahl was orphaned at a young age. Finding himself in the care of the Keep of the righteous as an initiate of their martial ideas of right and wrong. He was not the only child there under similar circumstances, in fact at the time there were a number of them. Stahl was a naturally kind and trusting child and soon made a bond with a young girl, similarly orphaned, though half-drow in heritage and ostracised and mocked by many of the other children aside from Stahl. Perhaps because of this rejection, or perhaps a victim of her dark-elven blood this girl broke mentally, culminating in a surprising but not so surprising murder of one of her fellow orphans and fervent mockers. Mortally wounded she fled the keep. Stahl would find her but faced with letting his friend die a slow death to blood loss or experience a life of insanity he chose to take her life by his own hands as an act of mercy, or perhaps selfishness. He never spoke to the truth of what happened to his peers or guardians, who soon abandoned any interrogation now that Lillya was long gone. And as Stahl proved himself to be a capable and fastidious student the Keep sponsored his application to the guild of Paladins when he came of age.

68654, Stahl's Role Chapter 2
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 2 Pushing Down Added Wed Dec 9 21:35:39 2020 at level 1:As the years wore on the threshold of her mind wore thin. Every insult, every ill-inspired mockery stripping away at her ego until only the strained strands of sanity she clung desperately to remained, for there is nothing more fragile than an insecure mind mired in delusion. And there is nothing quite so dangerous as an animal backed into a corner.
Late into the night Stahl awoke to the trundling cacophony of footsteps bounding toward his bunk. Lillya had fled the keep but not before scattering the cranial pulp of a fellow initiate across the halls with a heavy torch sconce. Stahl was the first to be questioned by the guardsmen because of their bond. He knew exactly where she would be found, feigning ignorance in the hope cooler heads would prevail. The night grew weary and as the guardsmen exhausted all their leads he stole into the night, headed for a secluded grove connected to the underbrush surrounding the keep. A childish memory and a shared retreat from the existenial threads of life were a soothing balm that this small clearing had always promised the two of them. And there he found her, within the quiet repose of the pale moonlight cast upon them.
Mingling with the dim washed-out tones of night an efferfescent fluid poured from her gut, souring the soil beneath her. The guardsmen of the keep were capable of repelling an imperial siege in their own right and though an animal she may have been she was still just a child, it showed in the hesitation of her wounds. Shallow blood-ridden trenches marred her porcelain skin. Given time and in more capable hands she would surely recover. Time however was not a luxury they were afforded. Very little of the friend he had shared his happiest days with remained, a writhing mass of flesh and blood cradled in his arms, frail and helpless. Her eyes fixated intently on the empty void of the night's sky.
Before the dwindling hours of the night every painged ounce of his humanity longed to save her. His resolve was strong, stronger than it ever had been. A voice spoke out from the darkness. It did not belong to the ones who would wish her dead, the voice came from within, his own reason. In what way did he intend to save her? Her body may be healed but the mind is broken. If he protected her from this death now, what then? There is no alternative for the men of the keep than to kill her, no matter their reluctance. Or would he condemn her to a life of desperation, forever hiding from the sin she committed? His eyes felt heavy and his muscles seemed to drain of their strength. As the voice faded from his mind he laid her back down on the soft grass at the base of the tree. He knew the course of mercy, he knew how painful it would be to save her. He truly loved as it was. He felt the dampness of her tear stained face and his own. He could feel how fragile her neck was as he laced his fingers around it.

68653, Stahl's Role Chapter 1
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 1 Pressure Added Wed Dec 9 21:31:40 2020 at level 1:There is a deep sense of longing within every man, if only he gives himself the time to see it. Going beyond the want of shelter, food, and lust for the carnal. There are those among us who do not choose. Set upon a path from the moment they first draw breath to a calling far beyond their own limited perception. Going through the motions of life, most without ever knowing why. And there are those still who are aware of their path. To say that these men are enlightened or above their peers would be to assume that the knowledge they possess could ever push them back against the unyielding tides of fate.
To be alone in this world as a child is a fate not even the darkest hearts of man could envision without the slightest pangs of regret, the unimaginble depths of despair echoing throughout their lives devoid of purpose or belonging.
To then be salvaged from the refuse of fate and taken into the care of the righteous is surely a blessing. On the outside it may seem so, a lifetime of hopelessness exchanged in an instant for servitude and nascent indoctrination to an intangible idea of purity. For some are too far gone for this offer to have any meaning. The far reaching tendrils of human cruelty have rooted themselves deep into the essence of their being, sinking them ever lower into the heart of the abyss. For Stahl this was indeed his salvation. But not all who have a place truly belong.
A child of uncertain circumstance, his dearest friend. A young girl of mixed blood, half human, half dark-elf. Lillya. In spite of the dull drumming lectures of the elders, was regarded by the other children as merely the progeny of a mistake. An act so irrefutably immoral that her very existence was a permanent reminder of the horrid reality of life in a dimly lit world. All her peers saw her as such, save for Stahl.
An orphan wrought low by the absence of familial ties, invisible to an unsympathetic world. This perspective is perhaps what lead him only to see her as only exactly what she was, a lost lonely child. Like himself.
The years dragged on as they grew together and closer to one another. A bond not of convenience, or physical desire. A compassionate love the likes of which only children are capable. But for that same love that only a child can harbor, so too is the cruelty that only an immature heart can inflict. The daily teasing and exclusion of Lillya by peers could only be eased so much. While Stahl could always step in when the torments went too far or became physical, there was nothing he could do to ease the emotional strain it caused her. Years upon years of constant reminders of her being "inhuman" began to turn inward. There came the day that she began to believe their words. The staunch defense of herself by Stahl no longer comforted her as an expression of their bond. Tainted by her minds own twisted logic as pity for something lesser than himself.
