Tharuli the Disciple of Ancient Ways
DescriptionStanding at a generously measured three and a half feet tall, this odd dwarf still easily stretches the width of two normal men. Yet this stocky dwarf's stature is not even close to the strangest thing about him. This particular dwarf appears to be an albino. His hair, white as fresh cow's milk is sheared clumsily very close to his scalp. His beard, though equally pale, has clearly been tended very carefully and with great pride. A string of perhaps two-dozen thin braids hang past this dwarf's waist and is tied off in a decorative knot nearly the size of his head. Looking out from above the immaculate beard are pale pink eyes, glaring out at the world with intense determination. These strange eyes are a startling contrast to the alabaster skin which covers this dwarf entirely, apart from a smattering of pale pink battle scars. Taking in the rest of this truly strange creature, you note the huge sausage-like fingers which seem to clench subconsciously at the slightest provocation.

66711, Tharuli's Role Chapter 4
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 4 Living up to the Legend Added Sun May 24 14:17:41 2020 at level 35:Becoming a warrior is a thing few are capable of. Becoming a BattleRager is far more rare, and far more challenging. But the ultimate goal of any great warrior is to be recognized as a Berserker. Tharuli Snowbeard is now a Berserker.
Some would be content to call that a destiny fulfilled, but Tharuli Snowbeard was far too driven to let that be that. He was far too focused on the only true goal: Destroying all mages, wherever they could be found.
But there were so many of them! Living in the mountains amongst his family, Tharuli never imagined Thera could be so infested with their filth. But you could see the signs of magic everywhere you turned. And so when there was no mage to crush, Tharuli turned to ale to forget the vileness of the magic taint. As he drank, he found himself angrier, and more intent on their destruction. A vicious cycle, some might say, but Tharuli saw it only as growing clarity in what he needed to do.
More lessons came with that clarity, not always pleasant. Some of the Villagers were weak. The first of the Snowbeard would be ashamed to see it. Defeated by Orcs, routed by Imperials, Tharuli had seen too much defeat for a lifetime. And far too many in the Village spent their time sulking in shadows, rather than destroying mages. Focused on writing books and building lists, rather than building a collection of skulls.
Tharuli hoped to show them what it meant to be a Berserker again, to destroy mages, not just weaken them.
Just thinking of it roused Tharuli's anger again. And his thirst. Now, where was that ale again?

RoleChapter 3 A Quest Begun Added Thu May 7 09:52:40 2020 at level 15:As Tharuli grew stronger, his need to destroy those that he believed cursed him grew with him.
His family seemed content to sit in those mountains, drinking their ale, telling stories of what they'd do if they ever actually saw a mage, and occassionally forging small tools to barter for supplies. Tharuli wasn't like the rest of his family.
While they sat and drank, Tharuli practiced. And drank. With no weapons but his fists and forgehammers, Tharuli named every tree, rock and small animal near him a mage, and honed his skills.
He was raw, fueled by emotion, not skill, but a swinging hammer felt more natural when it was used to destroy a mages skull, rather than shape a horseshoe. That was when Tharuli decided it wasn't a pasttime. He was ready to follow in the first of the Snowbeard's footsteps. He would hunt the mages that cursed his family, and he would destroy them. And every other mage that he could find as well.
Announcing his intention to go to war against the mages and was greeted immediately by praise and jubilation from his family. With the fanfare of a great hero, Tharuli left to take the trek to Akan as a hero amongst the Snowbeards, and begin his quest to destroy magic once and for all.
And that is where Tharuli Snowbeard became more than an odd Dwarf in a reclusive family. He became a warrior. And that is when the true story of the Snowbeard finally began.

66709, Tharuli's Role Chapter 2
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 2 The Youngest Snowbeard Added Thu May 7 09:45:16 2020 at level 15:Raised in the Snowbeard clan the Snowbeard way, Tharuli was taught that these tales of his ancestry were the only truths. Anything contradictory was a point of someone else's confusion, if not outright deception. He never saw reason, and never cared to imagine one, to suspect that the words of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather could ever be untrue.
Never seeing one with his own eyes, Tharuli learned to hate the very idea of mages. The concept of magic itself could only spawn evil and torment. The "Why" was never important to him. It was as simple as eating and breathing. Mages were to be hated and to be destroyed. Their mere existence was proof of their villainy. There was no other opinion worth considering. And the Snowbeards? Well, they were Thera's only hope against this vicious threat.
Some may call this mindset close-minded. Those people would probably be correct, but Tharuli would hear none of it. The truth was plain to see, and if you refused to believe it then you were at best a fool, and at worst a mage-sympathizer who was committing treason against mortal Therans everywhere.
Tharuli was different from his brothers though, and from every other member of his family. He couldn't be content to live in the mountains and stew on the frustration of their family curse. From an early age, he wanted to take action. He wanted to go out and find the mages that cursed his family. He wanted to destroy them, and anyone else that had the unnatural power that made his family miserable.
Those were the thoughts that filled Tharuli's head as a young boy: Anger, frustration and an intense desire to destroy what he'd been taught was Thera's only true enemy.

66708, Tharuli's Role Chapter 1
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 1 Legend of the Snowbeard Added Thu May 7 09:43:33 2020 at level 15:Tharuli Snowbeard is a product of those who raised him, and that might not be a very good thing.
While he would likely claim Akan as his home city, Tharuli was raised by the reclusive Snowbeard clan, deep in the nearby mountains. Though "clan" may be a too-generous description for the Snowbeard family. It was only Tharuli, his two elder brothers, his mother and father, his father's mother and father, and his grandfather's father. Eight dwarves born from four generations of the same family, living primarily in self-imposed isolation.
While that isolation may sound odd, the reason is quite clear once you lay eyes on any of the males of the Snowbeard clan. Each and every one of them appears to have been born without a single hair or patch of skin that was not pale white. They were albinos, a trait passed down from generation to generation.
And every Dwarf in the family carries a deep resentment for it. Including Tharuli.
What could cause this strange permutation was gossiped about and guessed on by many of the Dwarves of Akan? Poor diet was the explanation favored by some of the more educated Dwarves that cared enough to think about it. Others of the more paranoid guessed it was something in the water found in those mountains, perhaps runoff from a poorly-managed mine. But inbreeding was the most popular joke from the cruder Dwarves found in the taverns and inns and wherever else some ale could be found. Of course, any who bothered to ask the Snowbeards would hear their version of the truth: Their family curse was caused by magic.
As their story goes, many thousands of years ago, the patron of the Snowbeard family was not called Snowbeard at all. He had a strong Dwarven name that any young Dwarf would be proud of. No one remembers what that name may have been, but they do remember their forebear was a great warrior, a proud Dwarf, and a member of the reknowned BattleRagers village. He was feared by mages and respected by Dwarves. That is what every one of the Snowbeards would tell you, almost verbatim from each pale and ale-soaked mouth.
They would go on to tell you that he was so feared by the vile mages, that a band of them gathered together in secret to conspire against him specifically. They schemed on how to best deal with this powerful Dwarf until they came to their devious plan. They would curse not only the first of the Snowbeard's, but every member of his family. Curse them to stand out pure white against the dark of the mountain, so that all mages would forever see these fierce warriors at a great distance and know to keep far, far away.
That is the legend that the Snowbeard's would tell you. It is the story that they base their life upon, and one they will hear no argument about.
Of course, few Dwarves outside of their own family would ever believe such a ridiculous tale.
