Hair drawn tightly, black as night, frames a face that is under tight
composure. Human and of an early age, this young lady has lips that seem
to constantly purse in judgment. Yet her green eyes sparkle with an intense
curiosity, a sort of fervent fascination that takes you in, but it's also the
over loving attention of a young girl examining a rabbit or newly found
friend.

Free From Our Temptations

Vae V'kri, mercenary and hire guard (some would say thug) to the steady
flowing merchant caravans between the protected cities, had a problem.

It wasn't that she no longer needed food, that she no longer needed coin.
Feasting and gold came from the merchants gratitude as sure as the outlander
raids came on the merchant caravans who they sought to destroy.

It wasn't that she was good at her job, that she was good at killing
outlanders. It was that she LOVED killing outlanders. It excited her, it
quickened her pulse, it was what motivated her.


Then it was bandits, and she begin to love killing them to.

Then came the merchant wars as they consolidated. Soon she was killing rival
merchants for coin alone and she loved it. The excitement and rush. She was
addicted.

Suddenly, assassins were a problem. Vae V'kri could not sleep. She had to
keep switching locations so her patterns were unpredictable. She was once
again like the little girl sleeping on the rafters.

She felt like a little girl again, unable to sleep, no solace to be found.
Everyone needed a place of solace.

It wasn't until she begin realizing that death was her favorite solution to
a problem, that Vae realized what she truly feared. Herself.

She found herself wondering the abandoned warehouse. Didn't it use to be
bigger? She remembered looking out across the city, where she had dreamed as
a young girl of being those who HAD and not those who merely survived.

Those who took picnics like her mother. The little girls who knew to follow
the rules.

She needed a place of solace. Not just solace from her would be assassins,
but solace from her own temptations.

Vae V'kri looked up. She did not remember when she had started walking
towards the spire, a silly place for a rogue. But thats where she had
walked.

As she stepped up to the pledge line she realized she was breathing easily
for the first time in a long while, her pulse no longer racing. She would
build a place of solace and respite. Everyone deserved a place of respite and
peace. Everyone at some time, somewhere should be protected not only from the
Outlanders and Assassins of the outside world, but for those like her within
seeking a place of safety from their own bloodlust and temptations... if only
for a moment. A place to be a good little girl again, a place to be a rule
follower.

Chapter 3

Hunger Always Wins

The dark alleys of Galadon were now Vaes home thanks to two forces outside
the young girls control. The first was an overly earnest rogue party
casing out the High Lords Keep, who chance upon Vae at the murky rivers
edge and decided bringing back a new half-drowned recruit to the Galadon
Thieves Guild was a safer and healthier option. The second was the hunger.
Always the constant hunger and a need to eat. A need to survive.

And always there was the lack of sleep. The inability to close your eyes less
some guildmate killed you for what you had, so that they could conquer their
hunger. Tonight she slept on the rafters in an old abandoned warehouse. She
hated her life, she hated the abuse, she hated what she had become. She hated
what she was forced to do.

She looked outside between the gaps of an old boarded window and wondered
what she had to do to be like them. The ones who didnt have to steal to
eat, steal to live. The ones who could take picnics. The ones who could
sleep instead of fear. Who could live a life instead of grasp for their life.
But she was hungry, and the hunger always won.

Chapter 2

Little Rule Follower - Part 2

The path winded and drifted like one of those silly old bards on their way
home from the Copeham Inn after a full night of drinking. Vae followed the
path as it wove over logs and under branches. Soon it began to get dark. Dusk
came. Little Vae begin to get scared.

Suddenly she heard calls for her name. But it wasnt just her mother
calling, it was the hearty voice of her dad and his fellow lumberjacks!

"Yes!" Vae screamed. "Im here! Come get me, I want to go home!"

Vae drew her arms close and folded across her chest, shivering and no longer
liking this scary weald. She was mad at herself for being a bad little girl
and not listening to her mom. The lumberjacks and her moms voice drew
closer and she nodded to herself in reassurance, that it would be alright. As
she did so, she found herself staring at the most majestic condor on a log in
front of her, its head tilted, watching her as intently as she was
suddenly watching it.

It tilted its head further. Little Vae tilted her head further, in a
strange game of magic mirror. What a beautiful bird.

Suddenly the lumberjacks burst into the scene and there was a strange mix of
hysterical relief from her mother, a stern look from her father, and the
chuckling told you sos that everything would be fine from dads few
lumberjack friends.

"Dad, Mom, look at this huge condor"... Vae stopped. It was gone.

Thats when the lightning hit. Thats when the tree moved. Thats when
the grass came alive.

Screams. Screams and blood. The smell of wet grass, but not that smell after
a rain. A new smell, of grass and blood.

Little Vae desperately crawled into a hollowed log on the rivers edge. She
curled into a ball inside, rocking back and forth screaming to herself to
drown out the more horrible screaming. She wasnt a bad girl. She wasnt
a rule breaker. The log dislodged into the river and she screamed again.

Wack. The sound of her head hitting the inside of the log. Water begin to
find its way inside as she and the log drifted... her into sleep, and it
along the murky rivers current.

Little Rule Follower - Part 1

Little Vae V'Kri, a girl of eight, ran after a small warg cub. She was at
the edge of the western outskirts of Galadon where it gave way to the weald,
punctuated by the sound of lumberjacks working. As she chased the little warg
cub past the boundary lines, an authoritative scream from her mother stopped
her in her tracks, cold. "Vae Vkri, WHERE do you think you are going
young woman!"

Vae stopped, chagrined, and looked to her mom on her picnic blanket at the
outskirts as they waited for dad to return from lumberjacking.

"What is the rule, Vae. What have you been told?" her mother asked,
expectantly.

Little Vae bit her lip and answered in a small voice. "The weald is not
safe. Bad things happen to children who do not follow the rules. Good little
girls are rule followers."

Her mother gave her a suddenly warm smile. "That is right Vae. And you are
a good girl arent you. One who follows the rules?" to which Vae nodded,
for she was a good girl, she just really wanted to chase the small warg cub.

The beautiful afternoon lazed away, and the sun crossed the sky. Dad would be
done working soon. Suddenly, a tower glinted in the distance, along the
river, and it was mesmerizing. Vae turned to ask her mother permission, but
her mother was sleeping.

Little Vae bit her lip again. She wasnt a bad little girl, she WAS a rule
follower. But she didnt want to wake mother. Yes, that made sense. Before
she knew it she was stepping into the weald, exploring, searching, a child
full of wonderment.
