Description

Your gaze falls upon the female form of a half-elf. Thick, red hair is
pulled back into a ponytail, with a small loose bit of bangs swept to the
left. Her eyes are a deep, emerald green, and her skin has a light,
golden tone to it. She stands a little over five feet tall, and she
looks like she's went through a lifetime of training and exercise. She
wears clothing that's loose enough to move freely in but tight enough
that it doesn't get in the way. A flat expression of determination is
eternally cemented into her face, with a slight smile or chuckle cracking
that on rare occasion. Her gaze occasionally strays, as if far away, and
deep in thought. Some past that haunts her? Or hopes for the future?

Chapter 7

Elra

Elra, the Mourner. She sends shivers down my spine, but she gave me the
news I hoped for. My father is still alive. It has been a long time
coming that I deal with and close this chapter of my life. I had pushed
it aside for a time, finding warmth and happiness among the company of
Aurew, Drissa, Jeunne, and the others. And then Drissa left us...and I
had that nightmare. I can no longer push it from my mind. I must deal
with it. And the timing is horrible, for I have been named Captain of
the Brigade. So now my duties to the Brigade are more, and yet I still
have this open chapter of my life from before. How did my life become
such a mess? At least Aurew has managed to push aside her urges to kill.
My resolve to keep the tough face weakens to the breaking point, but she
now sees us, so I can finally rest easy in that regard.

Now my worries are to everyone else. Can I do right by them? Lead them
properly? I was overwhelmed with the honor of the position that I may
have taken it in haste. Or perhaps I did not want someone to do Drissa
dishonor? What a failure it would be if I was the one who did that
dishonor. So many new squires who look to me for leadership and
guidance, at least Gaelilga, stubborn dwarf that he is, has been help in
that regard. And then the matter of Alavien. Did I fail them? Is it my
fault they were let in before they were ready? And now Erzu has taken an
innocent life. Something must be done to stop this cycle. I watched it
as a squire, a Maran, and now Captain. Now it truly falls upon my
shoulders to put a stop to this, or perhaps the fortress is becoming a
relic? With rules not even our own can abide by. The answers to many of
these questions remain unclear, and yet I must press on. At least I get
some time awake to myself, or my talks with Aurew help keep me sane. I
think without those, I may lose my mind, and be the crazy drunk you find
wandering Thera aimlessly. What a relief my enemies may find if that
were to happen.

Chapter 6

Void

Drissa is gone. Aurew informed us all. While I am glad her her last
moments were spent with her greatest friend...it is not enough to fill
the void in my heart. I have lost another maternal figure...a teacher, a
guide, a friend. And in such a time, I've slain so many more...I'm
beginning to feel deadened. Her loss weighs on me, and now it weighs on
me how used to this life I am. I also took her words to heart, but not
enough, it seems. I see myself for exactly what I am, a killer. No
matter what I could do after this war...I won't belong in that world.
I'll be a remnant of this broken world I'm trying to fix. A remnant
whose only friend now is Aurew, truly the only one of us who would belong
here still. Yet, I worry about her, too.

We were always friendly and slightly close, thanks to Drissa, but this
pain has brought us even more together. We both deal with losing her in
our own way, I began to drink more, and Aurew spent so much time alone.
We began to look to each other for support, and oh how we needed it. And
then there was that dream...in the forest. It was so clear...I watched
the same man who killed my mother kill Drissa. I relive it in my dreams,
sometimes...but never so clear. Like it actually happened. And through
all the tears and harship this has caused...I've tried to put on a tough
face for Aurew. She needs it. I cannot hold that much longer, though.
She tells me she feels the monster rising in her...she can't control her
urges to kill, but she must. She is no soldier, she is the true light
among us, and she cannot lose that. It is who she is, and what keeps us
who we are. But how long can I keep this up for her? I only hope it is
long enough.

Chapter 5

Maran

(Quick aside, a few of the next role updates were meant for earlier in
her life...but I never got around to writing them.)

Maran. The term still feels so odd to me, that I now hold the title.
It has been my goal since the day I left the guild. And yet here I am,
finding it odd. However, what really grips my heart is the things I've
done to be called Maran. More fall to my blades each day, and yet more
darkness rises. As it is, I am the wall that stands between them and
growing to be a threat to Drissa to Aurew. The thought of her warms my
heart...she taught me so much about the path I'm on. Drissa is slowly
becoming the Mother I didn't get to have. Without her, I may still be a
squire, I may not have learned enough of this path ahead of me. I can
only hope to continue along this path, and hope all this killing does not
consume me. I have slain nowhere near the amount she has, but every life
ended at the tip of my sword or dagger, I feel it. And I know she feels
it to, all of us do. What happens if we cannot find our own way if we
win? My skills would truly be useless in the world we fight for, but I
must fight for it. For Drissa, for Aurew, for those children who may
keep their mothers because of it. Even if it destroys me in the end, my
cause is Righteous.

Chapter 4

Warrior of Light

Looking back, I didn't understand what killing meant. I didn't
understand how much taking a life grips your soul, weighs on you. As I
end more and more lives, I feel myself needing to reach back more and
reset my focus. I need to remember again that fateful day, to remember
why I'm here, what brought me along this path. The first was difficult,
and each becomes easier individually, but together the whole is more than
each could ever be. I actually start to fear for the day when it stops
bothering me. Do lose who I am? Does it mean I don't care? I suppose
only time will tell, but this duty must be done.

And despite that, I find I'll never forget their names or faces.
Khrath, Viqual, Mirpsies, Bahrad, Lurg. Eeach of you fell to me blades,
and should you continue on your dark path, then it is possible you will
do so again. I don't do it out of anger, but because it must be done. A
world full of love, one where a child's parent is not murdered for
protecting what she loves. I must never forget, else I lose my focus and
fall from the path I've chosen.

Light

Merelith lightly stepped through the guild today. It was her day, she
was to leave today on an adventure. She would be free to hone her skills
and travel the world, and find that mysterious man. She walked out of
the guild, heading into the main square for some food, when she heard
someone yelling...no, preaching. She got closer, more than a little
curious. He stood on a small soap box, preaching of the Light, and the
Fortress. He preached of the Maran, of the Acolytes, and their fight
against the tides of darkness. She listened with wonder, perhaps this
was a sign from the gods? She knew she had to go there. She knew she
had to fight with them. An entire brigade dedicated to destroying the
darkness that had ruined her childhood? She liked the sound of that.

Having made up her mind, she got what she needed and went back to the
guild, a look of newly found determination on her face. "Merelith
Kal'Ryez'Shador. Where have you been?" She jumped at the sound, not
expecting it, and perhaps too deep in thought to notice anyway. She
looked over to her master. "Getting some supplies early, I wanted to be
ready when I set out." He gave a short chuckle, "Well hurry up and get
ready, it's almost time." She smiled and skipped to her bunk, clearing
her things and out and packing. "Just a few hours." She muttered to
herself.

Assassin

A man clad in dark clothes quickly moved to block a young girls kick,
quickly grabbing her leg and pinning her the ground. As much as she
might squirm, she was not strong enough to get out of the hold. "Fine,
you win!" She cried, blowing strands of red hair out of her mouth. He
let go of her, and they both sat down, panting and sweaty.

He looked at her with a look of small pride. "You're driven, more
driven than your classmates. I'm glad to see the improvements you've
made." She gave him a quick glare while putting her hair back up into
the ponytail that had come loose. "If I'm so good, why am I still
struggling so much against you." He laughed, well I am a master, and you
are but a student. In time, my child. She stuck her tongue out at him
and they both gave a hearty laugh. "But...why did you come here? We are
called killers, assassins. You never did tell me."

She looked down at the ground, obviously deep in thought. "My mother
was murdered when I was very young...I watched her die. Whoever did
it...wanted me. I...I think he may have been my father, but I cannot
know. I can't see things like that happen anymore, though. I have to
stop it at all costs."

The man gave a nod, not wanting to press further, seeing a small tear
form in her eyes. "Well then let's get back to training, then? We can
get you where you want to be, I'm sure of it." And without further
words, the two jumped from their seats and went back at it, a look of
determination splayed across the girls face. Soon she would graduate,
and be out in the world, ready to stop evil acts, and discover the secret
of that mysterious man.

Chapter 1

Loss and Destruction

Heavy smoke filled the air as fires ate through the small village. The
sound of cackling can be heard at the only house not yet on fire.
Outside, an angry looking human is shouting at the top of his lungs.
"That child is mine, give her to me!" He yelled, his voice almost
drowned out by the screams of the villagers.

A light skinned elf knelt in the doorway, crying. "No, you can't have
her!" She cried through her tears, with a young, red-haired half-elven
toddler shaking behind her. The man gave a wicked smile, and began
walking towards her. "Fine, have it your way!" He yelled through
gritted teeth as he plunged his axe through her skull. As if in a single
motion, he tried to sweep up the crying the child, but she wasn't going
without a fight. She screamed and kicked and bit him, and finally she
got free and ran into the forest. He quickly chased after her, but soon
realized he couldn't see that well in the dark.

The child ran and ran through the woods, tears filling her eyes.
Finally she was exhausted and could run no more, but as she took her
final steps, she bumped into a shadowy figure. She looked up,
frightened, and looking down upon her were the eyes of some of the
frightened villagers. "Help her!" The child cried. "He hit mother,
help her!" Those were the last words she spoke as she passed out, tired
and exhausted.
