Description

Arbrarn is a stocky figure of medium height. Most noticeably his head is a
clean shaven to his pale gray skalp. The hair missing from his head is
contrasted by the presence of a pair of incredibly bushy, jet-black eyebrows
and a similarly colored handlebar mustache. His eyes are a dull white pupil
with iris and pupil so uncolored as to be nearly invisible. Several simple
ink tattoos of various Aran'gird symbols adorn his arms and hands. He has
large slabs of muscle beneath a thick layer of fat and while not exactly
athletic Arbrarn does at least look formidable.

Chapter 6

First Days of Imperial Priesthood

His image haunts my dreams and his ethereal voice whispers to my heart even
in my waking hours. Elbio, my bless'ed brother, cries out for his vengeance.
It was my promise to him, and I will spend my last drop of blood to keep it.

Too many days without the blood of my foes passed as I plied my persuasive
tools to rise in the Empire and my Guild. Finally, I have at least managed to
attain full Imperial priesthood. I now need only find my chance to become the
High Priest and I will be able to unleash my full fury upon my hated foes.

As my definitive work on the subject (to be found in the Eternal Library)
notes, reputation is a critical component to persuasiveness. I had spent all
of my young years, and many more besides, building my reputation. It was not
easy, for in my youth the was Empire is beset on all sides by savages of low
character. And, sadly, it is being lead by one who is not a savage, yet who
rivals them all for folly. Glikhardiz, the Great Clown.

Glikhardiz was the worst kind of leader. One who rose to power for his
personal gain, not for the gain of the cause. While these need not be
mutually exclusive, I say now that he risked the fabric of our great Empire
in an imprudent attempt to hold onto his personal power.

It was my observation he deliberately puts weak individuals into Council
seats that his underlings not possess the wit and fortitude to overthrow him.
And surely anyone of sense would have ousterd him as fast as a duergar to
mead. Thus I found it unnecessarily difficult to rise to the place of an
Imperial Priest.

Others have experienced similar circumstance and have not had my patience.
The ranks of the Empire thin and my task made difficult. Too often I have
been outnumbered and my beloved venoms could only ensure my survival, not
enact my vengeance.

At this juncture of my life it seemed most prudent to serve the Empire well,
continue my studies in Persuasion, and wait for the opportunity of the High
Priest's seat to present itself to me.

Chapter 5

To the Overworld

Grief is like the great Aryth. At times her waters are calm, at others she
drowns and oppresses. The only thing to do for it is learn to swim. After
Elbio died, I wasn't even afloat.

I buried him on the Day of Freedom, early in the morning. Duergar do not know
compassion, and so I was alone with his cold body and my grief. I found an
out of the way tunnel, one that seemed peaceful, and one I thought he'd have
liked to play in. I dug the hole and I made a small marker with his name on
it. There I left him for all time.

I know now that we never get over great losses. We become them. And, they
often shape us into different, harder and more malevolent creatures. In the
weeks after Elbio's death I found my grief hardening into vengeful resolve. I
would visit my pain on all those of the Forests and Light. They would suffer
as I suffered. As Elbio suffered. Vengeance would be ours.

What would be the tool of my Vengeance? It would be the most powerful force I
know. The force of Persuasion. For it is by flesh and blood that all great
deeds are done. Do not even the gods themselves work through flesh and blood?
Persuasion is the tool by which men are bent to facilitate the ends of their
betters.

With little more in my head than a knowledge of Venoms and little more in my
heart than Vengeance, I set out to become Persuasion's pure dedicant. There
was nothing for me in Aran'gird any longer. I didn't know much of the
overworld, but I knew enough to know of the Empire. That was a place a
duergar like me could find power and a chance to use it against my hated
foes.

Wanting to hone my abilities of Persuasion even before taking my bloodoath, I
traveled from library to library seeking any Knowledge I could find.
Knowledge is the guiding force of Persuasion, after all. (More on that to be
included in my work on the subject.) Upon this quest I learned of an Eternal
Library and the immortal Witch Ishuli. I learned that her followers Dedicate
themselves Purely to a particular Knowledge and that the best of them earn
the opportunity to contribute their life's work to her Library. I joined the
guild of shamans and sought her for my empowerment.

Thus begins my memoir, for thus my life began.

Chapter 4

Death and Persuasion Part 2

This was the moment the value of Persuasion became as clear to me as the
stillest pool. I had only their pause, only a single, fleeting moment to come
up with words that would Persuade them to spare my life.

"Mercy! Mercy, sir," I said to the giant, "Fer I be but a lad!"

Those were not nearly the most persuasive words I would ever speak, but
surely they were the most important. In hindsight, I believe it was choosing
exactly the word, "mercy" that did the trick. I did not know then that Mercy
is considered an important virtue to paladins. One the truest of them will
try to live, not just speak. Luckily for me, that paladin was of the truer
sort and he chose to give me the requested mercy.

That first Persuasive sentence was accidental, a lucky guess. But, it showed
me the importance of gathering Knowledge, for it is best to know the values
of the one you intend to persuade that you may choose exactly the right
Persuasive approach.

But, before I could come to that realization the adrenaline of the moment
passed and the anguish of grief came. I would have to bury my kid brother.

Chapter 3

Death and Persuasion Part 1

Paladins always kill the duergar first. Wood-elves always run at the sight of
any duergar with an iron axe. But paladins and wood-elves together? Now,
that's a real problem. And it's amazing what can be done with a stolen
slave's robe.

I don't know the particulars of the attack, I only know the particulars of my
victimization in it. I was giving Elbio dinner when the pair exploded into
our dwelling. They were, as mentioned, a storm giant and a wood-elf. The
wood-elf was female with dulled armor and dirty blonde hair. She held a spear
made from whitesteel. The storm giant, whose bulk struggled against the
confines of our home, stood just behind her with a large two-handed sword
that glowed with holy power. With practiced, almost casual ease they
descended upon mother.

Whitesteel and prayers of holy wrath fell her into a burned, bloodied and
lifeless heap before my brother and I could react. As she was lain asunder
before us, we shrieked. Elbio, because he loved her. Me, because I would
never learn the truth of my father. It was a natural reaction, but it was not
a wise one. How much wiser to have been quiet, still and hidden. Alas.

Without a thought the wood-elf lanced Elbio with her spear, killing him
instantly. From the stories you would think this a more dramatic thing to
witness. You would expect the world to move in slow motion, for an orchestra
to begin playing solemn music, for a tear to form in his eye and
painstakingly caress his cheek before falling to the ground. Then for the eye
that shed it to forever close. But, the real world isn't like that.

In the real world you're so full of fear and adrenaline that the moment snaps
by so fast your brain cannot grasp it. You stand in a sort of shock asking
yourself foolishly if what you're seeing is real. Somewhere in your mind you
know. You know it's real. You know the heart-wrenching, agonizing pain of the
loss is coming. But for that moment, it hasn't arrived. There's only shock.
Shock, and the small matter of knowing you're probably next.

"Wait!" I said, before the pair reached me.

They paused, and in that brief pause I saw two different expressions. Both
shared a measure of surprise that I spoke, but anger was only in the eyes of
the wood-elf. The paladin seemed upset, as though wrestling with whether or
not he agreed with killing children, duergar children though we were.

The Beginning Part 2

There is a topic you will come to know means a great deal to me. This writing
is only my memoir, not my definitive work on that topic, but I shall mention
it here none the less. Persuasion. Persuasion is the most fascinating and
useful of disciplines. In those early teen years I began to explore this
unknowingly. Venom, and the threat of venom, Persuaded my charges to speak.
Venoms hold a dear place in my life, but only because of the power they give
me to Persuade.

You have likely noticed by now my written words are uncommon for one of my
kind. Depending on how other texts record or me, or if you read this while I
still live, you may also notice my writing does not coincide with my ever day
vernacular. As it is said, one can take the duergar out of Gird, but not Gird
out of the duergar's mouth. It is for the Witch called Ishuli I have learned
to write thusly. And, it is for her library I stretch the limits of my
Persuasive skill.

How I became so dedicated to Persuasion brings us back to my dear Elbio, and
to the day that would forever change the course of my life. With reluctance,
I shall now recount it.

Chapter 1

The Beginning Part 1

The first question I ever remember asking myself was, "Did she kill him"?
These simple words bespoke a complex problem, for she was my mother and he
was my father. I never knew my father, though not a day has gone by I haven't
longed for a look into his eyes or a word from his lips. I imagine he was a
cunning man, one with wisdom and strength, a man who could have taught me to
be a man. Every day spent without him was a day that stoked the fires of my
mental acquisitiveness, my burning desire to know if she took him from me.

Call me Arbrarn Green. Call me Arbrarn for the obvious reasons, but call me
Green for the color of those I question. I shall speak more upon the manner
of my questioning later, but know the core of my worth is my ability to use
toxicants to compel the tongue to truth or to death, if no truth is to be
heard.

Why then did I not use my malignant gifts to force the truth from my mother's
mouth? I shall tell you why. Love. Not love for my mother, but love for my
dear younger brother, Elbio. Elbio loved mother, and I could never bear the
guilt of hurting him with the pain my questioning would visit upon her.

Half a decade my junior, Elbio did not struggle without a strong man in his
life, for he had me. He didn't harbor my resentments, my anger. Sure as the
world, he was a typical duergar snot, but he was to grow to greatness, of
that I am sure.

Mother was a wretch, far from her own greatness and thus without cognate by
which to inspire the greatness of her offspring. Even the provision of basic
means was beyond her. Thus, I provided those means. I put Elbio in clothes,
soothed his nightmares, made his meals. I was his father, mother, brother and
confidant. He was my dearest friend.

I am sure by now you notice I speak of dear Elbio in tense past. His demise
was untimely. His potential was stolen from me and from the world. I will
soon tell the painful story of his end, but first I return to the beginning.

My early years were spent in Aran'gird, as is common for my kind. And, as is
also common, I began an apprenticeship in my teen years. However, mine was an
uncommon apprenticeship among the Inquisitors. As one of their number I was
trained in the particular specialty of poisons. I studied poisons that kill,
certainly, but those are the least useful. Poisons to loosen the tongue and
harvest Knowledge far surpass their lethal counterparts.
