Galgeron Spaint the Blooded Desert Dancer

Description

Clad in baggy clothing of turquoise belted with gold, this man has honey
blond hair and the pointed ears typical of an elf. He stands a full hand over
six feet, on the tall side for his kind. His eyes, a vibrant serpentine in
color, stare out from under eyebrows thicker than normal for an elf.

While his outer garb is more typical in style of a native of the desert
cities, a glimpse hear and there reveals a layer of leather and chain more
typical to the martial type. While no weapons are visible save a sturdy
walking staff, their presence remains in little doubt. Looking closer, it
seems...

Conflict, Blood, Leadership
Added Wed Jan 10 15:15:35 2018 at level 51:

Several milestones in Galgerons life have impacted his actions and
outlook. The most public or impacting on how others treat Galgeron is his
having assumed the mantle of Commander. While no one can be prepared for
this, Galgeron has immense faith in his own knowledge of the Village past and
view of the current war. While it is a heavy and demanding burden, he
rejoices in a challenge that he can tackle without inherent conflict attached
to it. A Commanders words guide the Village, and Galgeron takes great
pride in believing he knows best how to lead the Village. He picked Svakas as
his Drillmaster to have a berserkers perspective on the war, because he
trusts Svakas to continue to lead and be present, and frankly because Svakas
does not walk within the darkness, as does Lehla.

This conflict of the Village and Darkness is another major milestone, one
that has weighed extremely heavily on Galgeron. Until recent years, he had
avoided striking any magi of the light, instead using words. He has become
increasingly frustrated by the dismissal of his words by these magi, and when
Zah called Galgeron on his choices and how he would fight the light magi, he
felt it a tipping point. From that point on, he has struck several magi of
the Fortress, including the Captain. Since making this choice he has been
plagued with visions of dead or haunted children, which have shook Galgeron
to his core. He recently admitted to the construct of the Lost that in each
of his strikes on light magi, he was not actually attempting to slay them.
This is true - Galgeron has hoped to show them that they cannot ignore him,
and perhaps drive them back within the Fortress walls.

And yet he has still felt paralyzed by this conflict, for he still cannot
stomach slaying another of the light. So the alternative offered to Galgeron
fills him with pain, dread, and hope. He must show the magi of the light how
deeply Galgeron believes any sorcery to be a threat, and he is not afraid to
die. He is afraid to impose the burden of his own death on another of the
light, but hopes desperately that the innocence they will Lose will be a
catalyst for change. He does not know what these actions will mean for his
soul, but he goes into it with hope, acceptance, and noble intent.

Recklessness, Discovery, Direction
Added Tue Dec 19 11:32:30 2017 at level 51:

The developments for Galgeron have been numerous and impactful. On the
negative side, his zeal to thicken the veil and impact the war led him to
slay another of the light, this time not in self-defense. While the invoker
mentor made his lifes work in direct opposition to Galgerons, he truly
believes those of the light can be reasoned with, or at least dealt with
after all the dark and gray mages have been dealt with. When he struck the
final blow and felt that particular pain in his soul that comes with slaying
another of the light, he truly felt low. Being branded as blood-blinded was a
welcome penance, and yet he does wonder how many missteps he can make. Still,
he is unbroken by it, and has resolved to use greater care.

The most surprising of developments were the overture by the avatar of Loss,
in the shape of the doll. Galgeron had given almost no thought to a patron
god, save for his discovery of the shrine of Ergush. And yet, as he spoke
with the doll, he felt the shaping events of his life as a journey, as
connected by a single thread, perhaps for the first time. Because of this, he
found the cathedral of loss, and embraced the path of Loss. The realization
that the pain of loss was not inherently malicious, and indeed had shaped him
since his very young years, resonated deeply. He hopes to use this revelation
to guide those around him, to coach and improve his allies, and perhaps guide
his enemies to something besides their state of eternal conflict. He believes
that living in this way will prepare him should he ever come face to face
with Rahsael, but moreover, will make him a more complete person.

Humilty, Loss, Dedication
Added Tue Nov 21 13:36:20 2017 at level 32:

Galgeron thought he understood humility. Standing face to face with the Lord
of Strife, expecting to get his chance to build a hut, and instead learning
how thoroughly he had misstepped, was humbling, to say the least.

Galgeron knew on some level that he was pushing the boundary of what would be
appropriate for an applicant when visiting a healer. He convinced himself
that an interpretation of the ways of an applicant and villager that allowed
him to use a healer, in time of need, only if the prayer was one a villager
would accept within the Shrine within the Village. In looking back and
evaluating his own actions, he believes he let his pride and desire to
win overcome an accepted and straightforward interpretation of how he
should act as an applicant. And because he was able to lie to himself (which
he realized is what happened, without knowing it), he blinded himself to
future missteps of this sort. Because he believed in his own ability to
evaluate what was necessary and acceptable to win, he made the mistake
again in beseeching a priest for aid, not even realizing that what he was
doing was in some ways worse. In effect, his pride led him to take extremely
unprideful and humbling actions.

And so he has come to evaluate his future actions very carefully. The one
piece he has not lost is his dedication and perseverance. His discussions
with the Lord of Strife, and subsequently the Commander, have lead him to
believe that he must live as a Villager would, contribute as a villager
would, and prove his value. To do this, he is telling his story to any that
would ask (as many have wondered why he is still an applicant), and he is
doing what he can to hunt wizards, assist any of the Village, and live the
path as best he can.

As a separate but noteworthy occurrence, Galgeron accidentally slew a
light-adhering member of Blackclaws defence force. They are trained to
equate criminals branded as such by the Spire as foes of Blackclaw. In
Galgerons attempt to circumnavigate the guards of the east road (who also
do their duty, albeit motivated by coin or duty to the Spire, and not to the
light), one of the blackclaw guards tried to ambush Galgeron, and such was
their skill difference that he slew the felar instantly. He has been
heartbroken over these events. While he knew to avoid Voralia, he knows to
avoid Blackclaw as well. Moreover, he wishes to make the situation right by
people of Blackclaw. He does not yet know how, beyond being incredibly
careful when living as a criminal, but this care will shape his actions
moving forward.

Progress, Conflict, Determination
Added Sun Nov 12 10:32:57 2017 at level 29:

Galgeron has become a formal applicant to the Village, first finding a dark
wizard assaulting the dwarves of Akan, and slaying him in the heat of battle.
It was a clear-cut situation with choices made very simple by his belief
system. A dark wizard fighting dwarven citizens for no other reason than
personal gain? Simple.

Yet most of the situations of battle or conflict since then have not been so
simple. Predictably, many of those who wish Galgerons head are not
wizards, but are those who would cut him down for simply being elven, whether
for his birth or adherence to the light. Galgeron knows that these fights do
not bring him any close to his goals of joining the Village or marching back
the gains magic has made in this world. And yet his pride as a warrior and as
one who would fight as one of the greatest warriors in the land often compel
him to continue these fights, and even put himself out as a tempting target,
in hopes of proving himself the better.

While he does not feel conflicted about defending himself, he knows that
there is only so much life in the adventurer of Thera, and that these fights,
at best honing his skills, take their toll and distract. He must constantly
stay vigil and not allow himself to be drawn down the path of fighting just
to fight.

So too does his pride come into play with the Village. He has slain more than
one wizard, and has done as the Drillmaster asked in thinking of a hero of
Village days gone by. And yet he has not seen the Drillmaster since. Galgeron
wants desperately to have a hut within the Village - the very thought of
being one of the few of this proud tradition in dark days where none will
pick up the fight fills him with pride. Yet he has done nothing besides
sending a scroll, trusting the process and knowing that war is patience, and
the wait itself is a test. Unsaid is that he has been a touch too proud to
beseech the gods directly. While he has not vocalized such thoughts, he knows
deep inside that prayer and direct outreach to the divine are not far off if
he does not make progress.

Pride & Origins (contd), & Path Forward
Added Mon Oct 30 12:56:23 2017 at level 25:

His hit, as hed hoped for, was not fatal and scored a deep cut on
Galvedar's shoulder. Yet this was enough for the demon to throw off its
binding and turn on the elven mage. The last word his brother uttered was
'Spaint' an archaic elven word for betrayer. Witnessing the whole
interchange, the Udgaardian mage turned to finish Galgeron. At that moment
one of the scouts, seizing the distraction, sent several arrows through the
mage's magical defenses, slaying him.

The battle was over, and several additional scouts were gravely wounded.
Putting aside his sense of emptiness and dread, Galgeron used his remaining
medical supplies to aid the wounded. As he recounted his story to the archer,
he realized how far he had come from his upbringing, losing his perspective,
blindly trusting and ultimately causing his brothers death.

He never returned to the desert city, instead moving to Voralia. Rather than
hiding what he had done, he adopted 'Spaint' in place of his surname,
embracing it as a reminder that his pride can be a source of strength, but
can lead to peril if he let it rule him. The desperate knife throw also
shaped his training, leading his to study the ways of the dagger above all
else within the guild.

The next several years were ones of healing and reflection for Galgeron.
While he trained his combat arts vigorously in the practice yards of the
city, his outward efforts took on a new tone. He apprenticed with both the
ranger and healer guilds to learn what he could of the basic healing arts.
Helping the wounded scouts as he had after the fateful battle had given him a
measure of peace, and becoming multi-skilled appealed to his still-strong
sense of pride.

Eventually one of the healers bit him seek out a deity, for he had clear
talents in healing. When Galgeron politely refused, stating his wishes to
rely on his own strength and abilities, the healer referenced the village of
the Battleragers. The healer knew of Galgeron's troubled past, and made it
clear of his own view on the village: Though they were looked down upon in
Voralia for their often ambivalent attitude towards light and dark, Galgeron
knew of them, and like with the aftermath of the battle, something clicked.
He had seen the corrupting force of magic, even on a pure soul like his
brother. He made a commitment to himself then to pursue the cause of the
Battleragers, joining the academy and setting out on his path with
perspective, pride in his decision and how far he had come, and renewed drive
for a cause he would embrace fully.

Pride and Origins
Added Mon Oct 30 12:53:49 2017 at level 25:

The arrogance of elves is legendary among the realms of men. Pride in his
abilities, actions and beliefs has always been a source of strength for
Galgeron. It has also lead to his near destruction.

He is the fourth son of a minor noble family, not in line for any leadership
or familial responsibility. This always lead him to feel distant to his
father and two oldest brothers. They were fierce warriors in the Darsylon
Home Guard, focused on building his familys reputation, legacy and
protecting the homeland. By contrast, his most immediate brother, the third
son Galvedar, was drawn into the magical arts.

While Galgeron had no magical talent, and trained hard at the martial arts in
the off chance he'd be called to duty, he was closest to this brother. Much
like Galgeron, Galvedar felt little acceptance from his family, when he
struck out to join a merchant company in Hamsah Mu'tazz, Galgeron joined.
The brothers were selective on what contracts they worked on being elves,
they valued virtue, or at least had a deep disdain for the evil races. The
company itself was not aligned with the light, and had members of all races.

Leaving the relative comforts of Darsylon was a rude awakening for Galgeron
in terms of his combat prowess. He had always been near the top of his
training cadre, but adapting to the fighting styles of various races and
backgrounds proved to require great focus. His pride in his own abilities led
him to train obsessively, leaving the logistics and contract decisions to his
brother so that he could get better. When they took the first contract
delivering to Udgaard Lokes palace, he was suspicious but said nothing.

While the contract was uneventful on the way there, the stay at the palace
was uncomfortably long. His brother Galvedar had been introduced to one of
Lokes court mages, ostensibly to discuss theory. When it finally came time
to depart, this mage convinced Galvedar to let him travel with them for
escort. As they crossed through the mountains, they were assaulted by a group
of resistance fighters, who had been tracking the mage for his role in
destroying their stronghold for Loke. The mage quickly called up a demon to
protect him, and much to Galgeron's horror, so did his brother. The tandem
demons tore apart several scouts. Shocked and dismayed, Galgeron confronted
Galgeron, who found himself over matched. In a last ditch effort, he threw
his boot knife at his brother, aiming to distract.
