Description

This gnarled old felar looks to have had a rough life. His thick coat is
marred by scars, which mingle in with the black stripes he was born with.
These divide an otherwise gray undercoat. His clothing is simple in its
design, but made conspicuous by its exceptionally high quality. When he
moves you detect none of the stiffness and lethargy one expects from the
aged. Rather his movements evince the sort of precision one gains only
through a lifetime of martial training. If he is a soldier, though, you
can detect no insignia or mark of rank that would indicate whom he serves
or in what capacity. You wonder whether he is perhaps the lowest sort of
soldier, pressed into service and not even afforded the dignity of rank.
Then again, given the manner in which he carries himself, perhaps he is one
whose position simply transcends the notion of rank.

If you fail to conceal your inspection, he acknowledges you with a deep
and resonant growl. Those familiar with the nuances of felar speech will
recognize it as being made up of equal parts menace and amusement.

It is that darkest part of the night, just before dawn. Torches that
were lit at sunset now gutter in their sconces and cast wavering shadows
along the corrodors of the Imperial Palace. One shadow separates from
the rest and begins to move of its own accord. The Emperor pads silently
past oblivious slaves and officials, paying them no heed. He is pensive
tonight. Reaching the records room at last, he pauses and enters.

As he leafs through the rosters for each sect, he considers the Imperial
Army at his disposal. A scowl creeps onto his face as he reaches those
scrolls that detail the Black and Divine sects, but it vanishes as
quickly as it came. With an incomprehensible grunt he turns and slips
back into the half-light of the corridor.

Continuing on he visits each Sect Hall in turn. Guardians lower their
heads in deference at his approach, silently stepping aside to grant
him entrance. The halls summon memories of his fomer council, and its
treachery figures prominently in his thoughts. However, he also recalls
the incredible might that was his to wield when the council was whole,
and how, by his authority, the ever-adversarial sects were for a time
united in pursuit of greater glory for the Throne.

So must it be again. Generals must be found from among the Citizenry
to lead the four sects. Individuals strong enough to crush enemies of
the Throne, yet skillful enough to nagivate the politics of the Imperial
court. Ambitious, but loyal. Always loyal.

He arrives at the Throne Room at last and emits a long, slow sigh.
Elbows resting on his thighs, he knits the digits of his front paws into
the form of a steeple and sinks deep into thought.

It has been some time now since Sivyh was promoted to the rank of Elite Shadow.
At first it was a source of pride; a public indication of the confidence the
Shadow Lord placed in him. Lately, though, it has begun to chaffe. Faolai is a
capable leader, that much is clear, but in Sivyh's mind there is one glaring
flaw with the current leadership of the Shadows: he's not the one calling the
shots. Consquently he has begun to look for cracks in Faolai's leadership.
Areas of weakness that might be exploited. On the one hand arials are short
lived, which argues for caution. On the other hand, the quicker he can supplant
Faolai the better.

The length of the current Empress's reign has also not gone unnoticed. Change
is coming, perhaps sooner rather than later. And with change comes opportunity.

After rising fairly quickly in the Shadow Sect and generally ingratiating
himself with the current Shadow Lord, Sivyh made his first misstep. The
question was raised of how a Citizen should hunt Anathema given the
command to work within the Blood Tribunal's restrictions on protected
cities. The Empress responded by quoting Imperial Law, "Anathema are to
be hunted and slain at all times." To this Sivyh responded, "One could
reasonably argue that hunting Anathema need not imply striking within
protected cities." This was interpreted as contradicting the Empress'
previous statement, and was met with swift punishment.

The demotion wounded Sivyh's pride, but he gave no outward indication to
that effect. If anything it served to motivate him all the more to regain
what he had lost through his careless words. It was a valuable lesson,
teaching Sivyh in the value of controlling one's speech as rigidly as one
controls one's body. Concealment is not merely a martial practice, but
one that extends especially to words and ideas. He vowed that henceforth
he would hide his true thoughts, revealing them only when it served his
interest. None would know his thoughts unless he wished it; not the
members of the Sect, not the Shadow Lord, not the Empress herself.

As he grew, he proved himself vastly more capable than his parents and,
indeed, more capable than most of those in the migrant group. He also
developed a deep resentment for both his parents' irresponsibility as well
as the community that enabled it. He hated the way the merchants and
guards in town looked at him as soon as he spoke and betrayed his
heritage. And so, as soon as he was able to support himself, he left.
His natural distaste for the chaotic nature of his childhood motivated him
to seek out the guild of assassins since it emphasized discipline and
acute self-control. His natural physical abilities lent themselves well
to this pursuit along with a certain sociopathic lack of remorse with
respect to the taking of life.

Sivyh is obsessed with strength and self-reliance, both internal and
external. That is to say he doesn't merely measure "strength" by one's
ability to kill others. He is enamored of rigid structures of rank, both
in the guild and in the Imperial power structure, but understands that
rank is often conferred on those who aren't worthy. The responsibility
rests on the Citizenry, then, to root out these "weak links" in order that
the Imperial command structure may be consistently strong at all levels.
Of course, the most obvious way to do this is to replace the weak leader
with one's self.

Sivyh was born into a community of migrant felar not entirely dissimilar
from the Vistani who make their home near Barovia. The group was largely
communal, sharing resources as there was need, and was frequently involved
in activities right at the outer limits of legality. As such they were
often in conflict with the Blood Tribunal and/or other local officials
charged with maintaing the public order. Sometimes this persecution was
legitimate, but often it was based on reputation alone and was intended
only to motivate the community to relocate elsewhere.

Sivyh grew to loathe them all. From the moment he came of age he recoiled
communal way in which resources were distributed among members of the
community. Not because his family was being taken advantage of; in fact
it was the exact opposite. His parents were laughably irresponsible with
money and quickly squandered what little they ever came by. Consequently
they were often forced to rely on the charity of others. While help was
always extended, the chronic nature of his family's need meant that it
came with no small amount of resentment. Still a child, Sivyh was
obviously not responsible for the state of his family's finances, but that
didn't spare him from other children's scorn.
