Kolo Berekta the Initiate of the Jaguar, Marshall of the Fortress

Description

This half elf stands somewhere above six feet though it's tough to tell
because of his easy lean on a long staff used for walking. His hair, long
and colored like honey, was lightly tied back behind his ears and down his
back passed the shoulders. His thin face looks rugged from long hours in the
sun the jaw which is well defined. Bright green eyes shine from under his
light brow and almost seem to illuminate the rest of his face. A long grey
cloak covers him from his neck down, the hood flopped back. His shirt is
light cotton and flows with the slight breeze. Dark brown trousers are well
taken care of and look to be newer. A wide black belt matches the tall soft
black boots he's wearing. As the wind blows his cloak wide you notice.....

So much has changed for me, while I still am left alone in my prayers I have
not lost any resolve. I know that Baerinika walks with me everywhere I go.
I feel like my life has accelerated to a pace I've never experienced so far.
There are many Darklings to fight, and much to right in the world, so I have
been kept away from my journal so hopefully I can keep things in order.I
fought along side my friends for many long months, and bonded I think with
two in particular, Lithodora the Captain of the Fortress, and Errylk, a very
skilled and dangerous assassin.Two who walk in the shadows to keep me safe
and to surprise my foes. We have made great progress I think. There is
still great darkness in the lands, personified into a Lich. A wildly
powerful undead mage. There is always a bright side to things though. In
this case it is that this Lich has inspired many to join forces with the
Light where they may not have otherwise. I was promoted to Maran by the
Watcher, and I tried to do the best I could by the Fortress, and by my
Goddess. shortly there after I was made the Marshall of the Fortress.
Something I could never have hoped for and that I will again try to live into
the possition. I think the Fortress is doing well with both Lithodora and I
awake rather often. The Cardinal I do not see very often though that is not
of great note as I can rarely see him anyhow. I have found myself rather
comfortable in a position I never thought I would. I do as I have always
done, I try to protect the innocent, aid the Light, and fight the Darkness
wherever I find it. I find my plan for the path of the Jaguar has as my
Goddess said would happen, has happened and my actions are now instinct. I
no longer have to think before I act because I know what i'm doing, my hands
and feet know, my soul knows. I am blessed in every sense now in life.It
is not easy by any stretch, but I relish every moment.

Developments

Kolo had traveled across the world and back and through many deadly places by
the time he'd met his Goddess. He has learned some restraint inside himself.
that the war will rage on no matter how fast he runs, and that it is
not ones duty to die all the time, but to make the Dark ones rush and stumble
and die. He has made some strides inside the Fortress to become a more
important piece in the army as well. Though the goals are totally
altruistic. He deeply wants his home to become strong again and wishes to
live to see the rise of the Light which he can feel is coming. Kolo spends
more and more time in the Lyceum and inside the Hall of Light reading as he
becomes more mature, and more confident in himself. The time he spends is to
learn how to inspire others to become greater than they are alone. He would
like to become a leader of men someday.Though he knows it is outside of his
comfort area. Thinking heavily on his task set forth for him he has come up
with his rules of Purity.


The first is to be Pure of Mind. So to never lie, or to taunt, or to become
anything less than someone who's actions will inspire those around him.


The second is to be Pure of Body. To never sully himself with anything which
could cloud his thoughts or slow his actions.


Lastly the third is to be Pure of Soul.He will be truthful to himself and
never attempt to justify a questionable action.He knows inside himself to
do the right thing immediately, and so shouldn't have to rationalize any
actions.


These three rules will position him to grow into an example for the world
over, and will prepare him for greater challenges to follow.

I have done it!I have finally found the Lady Baerinika. She spoke to me,
and as though she had always been with me. Which I knew deep inside that she
was walking with me. Though sometimes it did get lonely. Especially once
the Marshall retired. Though that is of no matter. The Light burns strongly
in many folk I know and that is what matters. Long wars take their toll,
though iron can be forged into steel after some time as well. My time in the
Fortress has been remarkably good so far, with a couple Fortress Squires my
age being about to wreak havoc upon those of the dark we can. And we're able
stronger. Anyhow, let me progress to the most interesting news. I have as I
said met the Goddess, and she has tasked me with setting guild lines for
myself.Three rules by which to live, which will merge instinct and reason.
So this I quest out on now. Though I know now where to begin. I am sure,
much like with all other parts of my life, that if I keep my ears, eyes, and
heart open I will walk the right part and learn how to express myself the way
I need to. I pray though it is sooner than later, I feel rushed all of a
sudden to move, and to revel in the world.

Chapter 4

Passages from a diary

***A heavily worn book is here, falling easily open to a water damaged
section. The story is told in the first person and seems to be of an
explorer.***


The heat was oppressive. The jungle here must be ancient. No air could move
between the moss covered branches. Large strange looking insects were
deadly, and everywhere.I've been here for almost a month. I know I've
tracked the right place down but there must be some secret here. I've met
some of the benevolent people here and was given a clue by a striking Fela
warrior. She said to head down the western slope and look. So I'm going now
even though the night is falling and I should set camp.I can't stand this
place. Too hot. Too sweaty all the time. I haven't slept in a week I feel
like.

I traveled for hours to the west, plagued by strange wild creatures and the
ever present insects. I slid and slipped out of the jungle though as the sun
was hitting the oceans surface and was instantly revived seeing the beautiful
world again. And the fresh air. I have never smelled such sweet air. I
took a terrible slip about half was down the cliff side. And I think if I
hadn't I never would have found what I sought. I ended up nose down in a
boot print. Heading into what looked like a solid wall of foliage. So I
pulled myself up and closed my eyes and pushed through it into a beautiful
old set of ruins. I was instantly filled with calm and comfort. My soul
knew where I was before I did. I had found the shrine of Baerinika. The
Great Goddess of Purity! I was here! My search was over! I don't know if
I'll ever be able to explain how it felt. I wandered through the ruins
careful to not disturb anything and shyly introduced myself to the maiden's
who tended them. To the altar I went and wept slightly. I felt complete. I
set camp nearby and stayed for some time. Studying the writings and
artifacts kept inside the ruins. I spent long hours in prayer and was
blessed by the Great Jaguar as well! I have yet to meet the Goddess in
person though I know she watches me and guides my steps.

Chapter 3

The Fortress of Light, and a clue!

Kolo took up a room in Galadon directly after finishing his time in the
Academy. For a time he lived in the city only moving up to a large Inn
called the Eternal Star which housed an expansive library. He read all day,
ate slept and returned to do the same for some time. Determined to find out
anything about this jaguar's shadow he had seen. He was no longer plagued up
the Shades of his youth, perhaps they had lost him? Or were no longer able
to harm him? He knew not though the matter was hardly solved.


He learned about The Fortress of Light, and immediately sought them out and
pledged himself to them. He was blooded and witnessed by the Captain of the
Fort Lithodora, who was tasked with training the Squires and vetting the
applicants. He was accepted into the ranks of the Squires and has made that
now his home. His studies quickly brought him to know that he was saved by
the Goddess Baerinika. He learned some of her and was unable to contain
himself any longer in the library. He set out quickly to find her.
Gradually he determined her shrine must be far afield from where he had been
so far.He packed up his things and prepared for a long journey east.

Family and Flight pt 2

These years passed slowly for Kolo. Alone mostly with his rapidly ailing
mother.She lived too closely to the curse and so withered herself through it.
sleeping and eating started to fail just like here piety had begun
earlier. She aged. Kolo tried for a few years to change here attitudes and
behaviors. She would have none of it. And she aged still more quickly. She
was skeletal. She arms thin as the stalks of corn growing skyward in the
fields.Her skin sagged.Her posture dropped.She died. Again her empty body
until sometime before burial. And the faded away, or was stolen by
the Shades. Who knows.Kolo certainly didn't.He packed his things and set
them away at the edge of his property. He slowly walked back and took a
torch from its sconce on the front porch, and stared deeply into the shadow
of the doorway.Stared with a grim and sad look on his face for many long
minutes, which seemed like hours. Or the other way around perhaps as is was
sundown when he finally cast the fire into the building he'd prepared for it.
snap of flames spread quickly and knew no hesitation. Nor did Kolo as
he turned south towards Galadon. He stepped quickly as he moved south,
knowing that with each moment the Shades grew in strength.


He practically bowled an old priest over as he roared through the north east
gate. "Which way to the temple Aunt?" asked Kolo while he picked up the Old
woman. "Temple you say stranger? Slow down and walk with me and we'll get
there before long". Shaking his head Kolo told the old woman in rapid gasps
of the Shades which haunted him. "We need to get away from here Old woman,
or we shall fall victim to them. I at least will". "Oh no no no child, you
will be safe here with me". And so they walked slowly with Kolo looking ever
over his shoulder as the night set into full darkness. With a shout Kolo
explaimed "They're right there!Just at the edge of the torchlight! How do
you keep them at bay?? How have you kept us safe?" Looking back Kolo saw
only the shadow of a Jaguar quickly fading away. Looking up he found himself
at the guild of Shaman's and quickly walked inside.

Chapter 1

Family and Flight pt 1

Shivering under the bed Kolo lay. Hiding, desperate that the Shades never
found him. His mind racing as he slowly put himself through an exercise his
mother had taught him. Simple doubling of numbers. One, two, four.........
Thirty-two...... Five hundred and twelve. It did much good to calm his
nerves though he never understood why. His mother told stories to all her
children of these Shades which would hunt them since they could understand
what it meant. Not a moment too soon as well as his father had been shredded
somehow by their power.He wasn't slain really. So much as..... Dissolved
or eaten. His body was there in the morning when they came from hiding. And
was there to be washed and for the shroud to be wrapped. But gone when they
tried to bury him. And now several years later starting to slip from the
memories of those who loved him most. Kolo could never tell if it was
because of time, or because of the Shades. Kolo never asked his mother of
it, and he couldn't ask his siblings as they'd either died or moved far far
away. Just the two of them now, in their bustling home. Too many rooms to
creak and crack in the wind and weather. Too much to maintain for his aging
mother.Kolo took solace in his prayer times, which his mother Helena had
begun skipping as of the last couple years, though Kolo couldn't really make
her return to the path which he saw as the only way to solve this problem
haunting his family for now five generations. Not a single child of this
family had lived into the old times. His mother was even young though she
looked quite a bit older now. But pray and meditate he did. He cursed and
screamed sometimes for answers, though he knew that wasn't how it worked. He
knew he needed to become pure, and dedicated to this difficult task to be
worthy of the eyes of his God. He wondered often of his siblings and where
they had gone, hoping deep inside that they hadn't succumbed to this evil
which struck at them but knew he would never see them again.
