Wabailla the Glacial Beast of the Underdark, Drillmistress of Battle
The disfigured visage of Wabailla is here with piercing dichromatic eyes.
DescriptionHideous. Scarring of unusual and cringe worthy nature covers a face that could only belong to a duergar. The beard is uneven and streaky, growing around the deep scarring. The long greasy hair covers some of the face but even that only adds to the repellant effect. The only thing on the near-ebony face that might qualify for something less than grotesque is the pair of eyes. Rare to the point of being unique, these eyes are a piercing, clear, and on anyone else, lovely set of eyes. One is the truest blue of a clear sky after a storm, one the deep green of the mighty seas. Startling enough to see someone with two different colored eyes, shocking to see such color in a duergar. They are there nonetheless. Once you drag your own eyes away from these mis-matched bits of brightness, you return to a being covered in dirt and rough clothing. Armaments of various kinds stick out here and there, arms and legs bear scars from obvious bouts of violence, and the garments, some poorly and others well made, are clearly not fashioned specifically for her. Only after this thorough look do you realize that what you are looking at is a woman. And last but certainly not least, on the left hand, you catch a glimpse of a glow, a light emanating from no discernable source. But on closer inspection, you see a deep tattoo of a Glacier, perfect in every way, burned deeply on her hand. beyond that, all you can see for sure is that

56652, Wabailla's Role Chapter 10

RoleChapter 10 On the job training Added Thu Oct 27 00:13:00 2016 at level 41:Wabailla would enjoy gutting all of those snooty high falutin fortress shites. Particularly some of the dwarfs who keep coming at her. But she already was committed to keeping focus on the true war, and both Jormyr and Tasnale have written about it even more. Now, as drillmistress, she must not just hold the standard, but be the example and hold herself to an even higher standard. She really is dedicated to doing the job right. As a result, she's been fighting back her more natural instincts and trying to get OUT of fights rather than get into them. She doubts it will always be successful, but if she can keep the various fortress and tree and whatever else enemies from bothering her, she can focus on the hunt for mages. Still makes her annoyed though!

RoleChapter 9 Significant Events (short end) Added Tue Oct 18 23:54:21 2016 at level 41:Last she's concerned about the empire. They seem to keep growing. She has mostly thought of them as a necessary distraction but a distraction nonetheless. But recently she has grown to see them as more of a real threat. Never as much as magic, but rising beyond mere wars of convenience. If asked, she'll advocate war continue, unless persuaded otherwise.
And on one other topic unrelated to these others, she was asked about her curse and then asked if she ever tried to have it lifted. The thought had never occurred to her, as she assumed it would take magic to do so and she would never allow that. But the idea of a commune-type power to lift the curse was suggested and now she can't get the idea out of her mind. She may never feel comfortable enough to raise it with anyone, but maybe she will. It's on her mind nonetheless.

RoleChapter 8 Significant Events Added Tue Oct 18 23:50:47 2016 at level 41:Recent events are why Wabailla embraces chaos. The Rites, as you know, did not go so well in her eyes. Lord Deormdel asked her to come speak to him after the Rites, which when they were able to meet, she did. As always she didn't hold back, and expressed her frustrations. She also expressed that not achieving what she wanted would not deter her from her path and her war. Angry or annoyed she might be, but they would (and did) pass. She would show herself to be worthy even so. The discussion wending its way through a few topics, all essentially about her and how she lives, and then, out of nowhere, coming as a complete and utter surprise to her, the lord looked at her, pondered a moment, said "Something is missing"... And then placed his mark upon her hand! The Glacier!! It was a rare moment of her being at a loss for words. She had always hoped for the honor, but never expected. This is one of the most important things of her life. It is important to her that she redouble her efforts to continue searching her own feelings and thoughts for as great an understanding of Deormdel's faith as possible. It does feel a bit odd now not to have a specific task to complete or consider, as Deormdel didn't assign her anything this last time. But at the same time she's older, somewhat wiser, and is able to continue on the path in a self-directed way. Not without him, of course, but as an adult in the faith, no longer a child. She hopes to continue meetings with him as often as his time permits, to ask questions, give answers, and talk. Much of her life is martial, utterly physical, and she would not have it any other way, but she does save part of herself for the spiritual with Deormdel's faith, and it's a good way to balance her life.
Wabailla left with a renewed sense of enjoying life, in all its bloody, deadly, ugly glory. She returned to the war, and her home. And then, mere days later, the new drillmaster fell and took his own life, never to return. Mere days! And then after a few more days she was summoned to the village and after a bit of hard talk, was given the chance to take the responsibility and do a good job. She, of course, accepted. This has had an impact on her in a few ways. She's always wanted to be a "good" villager, but now she feels the weight of the title. She intends to live up to that title. She's still evil, bloodthirsty, selfish, somewhat quick to anger, and everything she was before, but she's internalized the stature of the job and is demanding of herself to be what she must. She won't be perfect, but she'll try to be close. Likewise she's likely to be quick come down on those that go against the rules. In her mind, if SHE can toe the line, so can they all. Also she wants active huts, not tired and rarely-awake huts. She might burn a hut or two if people don't show up. Might have to discuss with Tasnale.

RoleChapter 7 Events Continued (just a bit) Added Fri Oct 14 13:58:01 2016 at level 40:improve herself, and sometimes thinks of herself as the Destructor's apprentice, learning to defend the Tablet and the Head - she's often the only one around to retake it, too, and she prides herself and pushing as hard as she can before being suicidal to take it back when necessary. She intends to spend some time at her current rank, getting used to her new weapons, spears and staffs, and when ready, moving up to bring her war to the various guilds' oldest. She is still older than most of her hutmates, in years, even if they rushed through the guilds faster. Life's not a race, it's a war, and she intends to win it!

56648, Wabailla's Role Chapter 6

RoleChapter 6 Events Added Fri Oct 14 13:54:46 2016 at level 40:Much has happened in recent years. Religiously she's very happy with her growth and progress. She returned to Deormdel to discuss her talks with Xisaer and Muuksabe, and he seemed pleased. He gave her a second task, to bring back two items representing her understanding of balance. She took quite a long time deciding what they should be, mostly because she needed the time to figure out what she thinks of balance in the first place (which she realizes is one of the reasons Deormdel asked her to do this at all). In the end, she came to the conclusion that the central balance (there are lots of minor balances, infinite perhaps in every second of every day) for her is between looking inward, knowing herself, and looking outword, knowing the world. And her place in the world as a result. To represent this, she obtained a mirror for looking in, and a pair of spectacles for looking out. Deormdel seemed pleased and understood. She hears of people who try to weave certain words in their speech to make sure everyone knows their spirituality, but not Wabailla. She doesn't avoid it, but she tries to live to her beliefs, not go about preaching them. If asked though, she does expound colorfully. At their last meeting Deormdel asked her to return after the Rites of Battle, which she has tried but not found him yet.
The Rites were something of a real disappointment to Wabailla. She won both her fights against the two who were of her age, but of course when she fought the two heroes of their guilds, she lost. Though she almost won, which while not winning, she felt made her a candidate. In that at least the battle gods seemed to agree as she was invited to the test of wits with Tasnale and Divrug. She had told Deormdel and Izqi before the rites even began that she really wanted the drillmistress position. Eventually it felt to her that it was not to be no matter how she performed. Several things but not imnportant now. The feeling resides with her and she carries some resentment. Increased because she knows in previous rites the ancient weapons were allowed to be taken out - Izqi had given her the crimson blade shortly after Wabailla got her hut, so she knows Izqi took it from the previous rites. She wandered a bit aimlessly after the rites, frustrated and angry, and still has some of that but it no longer is in the front of her mind. Nothing can overpower her core beliefs on the war, so she's back in as before, but a bit more wary about the supposed ways of the village. It manifests from time to time in a bit of snippiness/bitchyness. But won't go further than that, no outright rebellion or anything like that. Village is and always will be her family and sometimes families don't get along.
Lastly she's proud of the results of her training. There are not many who wake but when they do, her enemies pay the price, or just never show up in the first place. She is always looking to

RoleChapter 5 Progress Added Sun Sep 25 13:21:57 2016 at level 28:After quite a few years, Wabailla is now comfortable in the village. Virtually all her time out of her hut she is alone, but recently the drillmistress has been on a mission and several new huts have been built. They are young, but they seem in a rush, as in one waking time they all were younger in the guild than she, and then all advanced past her in the guild. She's not sure why this haste, but she's comfortable to advance at her own pace. She wants to have the time both for her mind and body and soul, her training, her thinking, and her faith. For example, she wants to balance her abilities as she progresses, so there is no great imbalance after some great spurt of advancement. She needs to know the truth of her abilities as she obtains and then incorporatres them into her fighting, and that takes time. And to be honest, it's really going to advance her anyway, as she will always do things which train her and give her real life experience, such as raiding, fighting various natives, and looking around. Also, she has seen a real lack of anyone else to defend the giant and take the fight to these young mages and nexus and imperial enemies. More than once the older villagers were stymied, but she was able to restore the head. Sometimes with opposition which she removed.
She does relish this hunting. At times she's challenged, particularly when they band together against her. But she works hard not to lose her cool, not to lose the balance between her rage and her intellect (such as it is, she's duerg after all!). It's a constant struggle.
She also feels very happy with her progress serving Lord Deormdel. Her second talk went well, and she very much agrees in the value of his first challenge. Speaking with Muuksube and Xisaer was helpful to her. Her unbridled fury at the power of magic and the betrayal of her people is still there, but it is now not the only thing powering her life. This is a good thing.
Lastly it should be known that as she grew up mostly outside the usual culture of duergs, she doesn't share the innate hatred of dwarves and others of the so-called "light". She definitely doesn't like them very much, but she has no problem interacting with them. She'll do so, when it has something for her to gain, such as information on enemy whereabouts, etc.

RoleChapter 4 A New Life Added Fri Sep 16 14:44:11 2016 at level 25:It wasn't an easy adjustment, living outside the underdark and in the daylight world. But in short order Wabailla began learning about the world, and herself, in ways that made life improve. First, she found her way to the largest city on the continent, Galadon, and convinced the guildmaster in the warrior guild to take her on as a student. It wasn't easy but she proved her worth, at least at learning. She's spoken with guildmasters in other cities since then, but home, for that, remains Galadon. At the same time she began hearing of a band of fighters who shared her unswerving rage against magic and those who perform it. A village of them, known as the BattleRagers. In relatively short order she'd met with several, learned more of their ways and decided she would join them and call them her new family. Proving herself by showing the blood of a mage on her blade, they accepted her and she built a hut of her own. She hasn't met all of her new siblings yet, and in fact never even seen the commander awake, but despite her overly cheery and cloyingly sweet attitude, Izqi, the drillmistress, appeals. Wabailla thinks they might be genuine friends, if time permits. Likewise Karron, the minotaur, has shown to be a good brother. Otherwise though, she has no friends, not even real acquaintances, in the world. When forced to examine herself, and be honest with herself, she is lonely. But she will not look to change anything or force anything. Her primary goal is to accommpolish victory in the war against magic, or at the very least do well in it.
Finally, throughout this learning process she also started hearing of the gods that these upper world dwellers worship, and one among them in particular: Deormdel. Out of all of these new gods (new to her), his texts resonated the most. Her life was much in hiding, and even more once she was so grotesquely maimed, and she learned not only to stand up but to be honest about it and not shy away from the looks of others. More, after reading and hearing of Deormdel's teachings, she thought about what happened to her in a new way, and how the ones who made the Great Spell were, at heart, essentially trying to unbalance the order of things and unmake that which should not be unmade. Most think of balance the way the nexus does, but there are other, better ways, and she sees that her existence is in some way validation of that. She finally spoke of these things with Deormmdel and he has set her a task, to speak to two of his long-standing followers. Wabailla will do so.
Couple notes on her: she's quick to anger, quick to laugh, quick in most all emotions really. Other than the Big Grudge (against magic), though, she doesn't tend to hold many. It can happen though and she'll make note of it when it does. Also she doesn't share her race's general hatred of dwarves. She doesn't like them mind you, but given her upbringing, that was never instilled in her.

RoleChapter 3 The Prophecy is Dead Added Sun Sep 11 13:25:26 2016 at level 3:cruel than simply killing her. Wabailla ran home, only to find the crude shelter they'd lived in destroyed, her parents long dead. She vomited from the smell, running away as fast as she could, stopping only when she'd reached the gates of the city. Panting, angry and frightened but unwilling to hide herself and lie about her heritage, she straightened, and with no thought beyond leaving the city behind she stepped out into the underdark, the next phase of her life about to begin...
Ten minutes later she almost died to a baby cavefisher. Only pure luck saved her, when just before the creature's teeth could close around her throat a stalactite cracked off and impaled the beast. Too much was happening to her and too fast. All the events of her recent life were just too much and she was unbalanced, a bit crazed, and wild. But she saw this in herself and rolling away from the corpse she stopped, paused, breathed, and tried to find her balance. For the second time that day, luck saved her. Passing by on the far side of the cavern were a group of adventurers. She'd seen pictures of other races but never in person, and her eyes widened as she saw a human for the first time, a dwarf for the first time, and cloud giant. They were clearly wounded, running from some battle. Leaping from thought to action as only the young can do, she rose up and keeping some distance, followed them. In their haste to escape whatever they had fought the party of three never saw Wabailla. Eventually, they came to a pathway up and after waiting a bit, Wabailla went up. Thankfully her wait had put some distance between her and the others because her first step into sunlight made her scream with shock and some small pain. It did not take her long to get used to it but still, she was again unnerved. Following the blood of the adventurers she made her way through forests and trees (all new to her), and eventually to more cultivated lands, small villages, and then to a city. At this point she stopped, rested, and decided to take her time learning the surface world. And so now she is here, ready to be herself, with no pretenses and no screens to hide behind. Her fury against magic fuels her and she will look to take up arms training, which in turn will allow her to fight, and win.

RoleChapter 2 The Prophecy Lives Added Sun Sep 11 13:07:35 2016 at level 3:The Prophecy Lives his small library of tomes and scrolls and, after rummaging, came upon the prophecy and the Great Spell. Thinking he could achieve greatness by being the one to sacrifice the foretold baby before him, he used what little magic he could find, combined with his rudimentary powers of healing, and wove a death spell over the child. To this day no one knows why he didn't just take a knife and plunge it into her chest. Likely he thought magic and power must be used to complete the Great Spell. Regardless, his pathetic and mis-guided use of power wrought chaos. Rather than killing her, spilling her blood to fulfil the prophecy and provide the strength of the Storm Giants to the dark elves and the deep knowledge of magic of the elves to the duergar, the power rebounded on itself, foiled after all this time, and lashed out at the only target it could reach: the baby. Cruel slices and cuts and lashes began appearing on her body, especially her face. Tortured pain was clear on her, and she screamed more than any baby before. It was awful. In shock, the father killed the healer, picked up the baby, and with the mother fled the halls of his clan, eventually finding a deserted section of the city near the mines. Thus began the years of living nearly alone, hiding, and in pain, for Wabailla. The foiled Great Spell had rebounded upon her, all its latent years of potential culminating now in a great curse upon her, which comes upon her in acute form from time to time, making the scars feel new and raw. She and her parents harbored a fear of magic now, which over time grew into hatred. A rage and fury of unmatched proportion. As she grew old enough to study, she learned all there was to know of the Great Spell, taking knowledge from books and scrolls her father or mother would steal from other parts of the city. This served to stoke her fire.
More and more as she grew she chafed at the confines of their deserted hideaway. Her parents might be shamed, but she was angry. She saw no reason to hide, to lie of who she was. And, as youths of any race all have in common, she one day disobeyed her parents and left to walk among the city proper, and be with the others, showing her face honestly, and without shame. As her parents feared of course, she was arrested and brought before the King. His advisors, together with the ambassador from Teth'Azaleth, quickly realized who - and what - she was. They worked furiously for more than a year, while she was held in a prison, to see if they could undo what the hedge-healer had done, and bring the prophecy to proper fruition. But to no avail. In the end, it was decided that the Great Spell's power was too twisted into the curse upon her that no balance could be brought, no completion possible. Disgusted, they turned her out and sentenced her to a life of shame and scorn, to live on the scraps of slaves, thinking that more

Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 1 The Prophecy Added Sun Sep 11 12:48:12 2016 at level 3:5th daughter of the 5th daughter of the 5th daughter, going back 555 generations. It was long ago, that first generation, in a time when the duergar of Aran'Gird and the dark elves of Teth Azeleth experienced a period of rapprochement, after one war and before the next. The duergar, able only to master the brutish powers of the anti-paladin guild, coveted the dark-elves easy mastery of all the paths of magical power. The dark elves, frail and weak of body, coveted the duergar's strength and durable heartiness. A deal was struck. Together they would work, for 10 full years, creating and preparing a Great Spell. Lives were sacrificed. Powers unheard of before or since were beseeched, tapped, and drained. Blood, flesh, soul, all were taken and used in the darkest of rites. And then, on the darkest day of the year, the full panoply of mages and scholars and warriors of both peoples met, with the Matron Mother standing at the forefront of hers and Trel'Aran itself standing next to the duergar king at the front of theirs, and the last piece of the Great Spell, 10 years in the making, was completed. A shockwave shot outward from the center and many were knocked over, some even killed. But not those right at the center. Instead they were caught in the Spell itself, and in perfect unison they shouted, shrieked, these words: THE EYES! THE EYES! WATCH FOR THE BLUE!! BLUE FOR ELF!! WATCH FOR THE GREEN!! GREEN FOR STORM!! SHE WILL BE THE SIGN!! DEEP MAGIC FOR THE MUNDANE! STRENGTH FOR THE WEAK! SHE MUST BE SACRIFICED AND THE SPELL WILL BE COMPLETE!!!
With that they collapsed, drained of all power and strength. In the days and weeks that followed, the scholars and rulers and mages and warriors of both cities pondered and argued and tried to decide what exactly the words had meant, and searched door to door for all babies to see if any had the mixed eyes. None was found. And as the years went by, the two peoples once again returned to their wars, the short detente broken, now enemies with no mercy.
But the power had been used, the Great Spell case, the legacy set and growing, bubbling in the very earth and air around all of them. Like a chrysalis, it grew and grew from generation to generation, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of years, until only few of the scholars and leaders of the two races even remembered it had been done, much less what it would mean. Long ago had the ritual viewing of every baby to check for the eyes been left undone. And so, when one day such a baby was born, it was only the mother and father and midwife who were there to note this unheard of event, and of course not one of them knew what it meant. Instead, they stood back, aghast at what to them was a strange and unnerving deformity. Hoping to find a "cure" to this malady, they brought her to what passed for a healer in their clan. This healer was one of the few with real training, and upon seeing the baby, rushed to
