Parandalia Amberfoot the Prime Constituent of Balance, Elder of the Island

Description

Standing at four feet even, this svirfnebli is a bit different
than most you've seen. She very much appears to be a much
smaller human, rather than the large nose-having, calloused
skin, and shorter svirfnebli that inhabit this world. Her hair
is fiery red and is cut into a bowl-cut. Her skin is pale white
and tiny freckles dot her cheeks just under her eyes. Her body
is slender and firm and resembles that of a young boy. Her eyes
are emerald green and seem to shimmer with a magical touch.
She is draped in a long velvet robe embroidered with runes
that appear to be arcane in nature.

Visions of a Future

"I see them in my dreams, the riddle of thirteen." A rhyme that plays
over and over in my mind. If I only knew what it meant, I think I
could sleep easier. Am I folley? Am I forsaken? I cannot give up
hope, for it is all I have. I cannot think I alone, for I do not
feel alone. Not anymore.

In my times of darkness, I turn to magic and knowledge. For I am
but a traveler, here in this realm, and these things will far out-live
myself. I hope to leave these lands with a level of insight that I,
myself, was unable to attain. I hope to do this through teaching. I
plan to initiate lecture from our higher scholars. To nurture insight
and growth from our younger adventurers. In this, I hope to foster a
love of learning that will inspire a future generation of scholars.

Perhaps, if I bring this, I will be worthy. Perhaps, if I do this,
I will earn their love. For I am not without guilt. I remember
watching them go, through a child's eyes. I remember watching them
fade away once. I'll not let it happen again.

Tarnished World

I am not a complete hypocrite. For, while we are in this plane, why
not help those we can? I sought the Nexan to help this world. To be
a beacon to others who value knowledge and wisdom above savegry. I
truly believe this world could be great. However, I don't think it
will come through Darkness covering the world. Nor Light enveloping
the lands. To be honest, after speaking with many on both light and
dark sides, I can report that they both sound quite similar.

It's the same for all the great powers. For this world to survive we,
as a whole, must find a common ground. A true 'balance'. And yes, I
understand how cliche that is, but what else am I to gather from
this world? The Light won't stop until Darkness is banished, and
Darkness won't stop until this world is a blight. We, Nexan, are all
that stand in the way. And we are ridiculed for it. I simply don't
understand.

I am alone here, on this lonely Island. I wonder who you are. You,
who found this journal. I wish I could meet you. Hear your thoughts,
and listen to you tell me what a fool I am. Perhaps you're but a
simple traveler, like me. Maybe we could have been friends. Yes,
that's a happy thought. Whoever you are, I wish you well. I hope
that, in your life, things are happier. That the world is greener,
and things make more sense. I like to think that I am with you, in
some way. Even if it is completely impossible. The thought gives me
comfort.

Reflection

Some people are afraid of the dark. I am not. Don't get me wrong, I
do understand that some things certainly do 'go bump in the night'.
But that's not enough. I can deal with the trolls, orcs, and even
spirits. What I find most difficult is what lies within. For I can
only be Parandalia Amberfoot, and no more. If I cannot conquer my
own mind, then I am truly lost.

I'm not afraid of the dark for the same reasons I'm not afraid to
challenge the Emperor. Because I know they are real. I know that if
I stand strong, I can defeat them. But what about my own mind? How
can I defeat that? I've seen it. A person lose control. Unable to
distinguish between reality and what's only in their minds. I've
witnessed it, first hand. A medically fit individual that's...
Damaged. How does one come back from that? In my waking dreams, I see
them. I see them fading away, and even though I cry out, they leave
anyway. I am left alone.

I say that I'm not searching, but I am. I tell everyone that it's in
the past, but it isn't. I say that I'm only looking to the future,
but I'm not. I want them back. Because I DESERVE to have them.
Because they were TAKEN from me. I would never admit this to anyone.
As far as anyone knows, I am Parandalia Amberfoot, Meter of Mind.
And I apologize to you, dear reader, for I would like to be strong
for you as well. But you have stumbled upon my most inner thoughts.
And they are much more unsightly.

Chapter 3

Lost, and Found Again

The 3 or 4 years following their disappearance were filled with
worry, fear, depression, and anger. Years I do indeed wish I
could forget. Search parties were sent out. Dogs were given
pieces of clothing to sniff-out, magical devices were used to
divine their whereabouts, and detectives were even employed.
Nothing. Not even one clue. You see, my parents guarded their
secrets closely, and no one even know where they were headed.
All I was left with was speculation. To this very day, I've
found not one clue as to there whereabouts.

As you can understand, their disappearance left me with nothing.
An emptyness that I cannot describe. I had no one. For years
I struggled. Not just financially, but emotionally and physically.
I stopped eating. I stopped wanting to live. Though I could
never get something my father once said to me out of my head.
He said "To live is to struggle, and we are all a part of it."
For some reason, these words give me strength, and allow me to
feel a part of something greater. In time, I was able to pull
myself up from the despair I felt. I joined a guild and have
sense devoted my time to mastery of my craft.

I've also joined a group devoted to keeping the world in balance.
Nexus, we call ourselves. Servants of understanding, and Keepers
of Balance. This group also allows me the freedom to pursue
achademic and arcane ventures. They have given me the fellowship
I'd lost over the years. Acceptance that I so desired. I could
never thank them enough for that. In time, I too shall take up
the mantle of my parents and search this world for what was lost.
Should I learn more of their disappearance through this, then fine.
Though, if not, I shall not be detered. For as I look up into the
sky right now, I can see thirteen geese flying south... Perhaps
there is a bit of luck in my future.

Chapter 2

A sad Departure

Things continued on in this manner for a time. My parents'
relentless search for arcane secrets lost to time was our
obsession. I say 'our' because I was soon lost in it as well.
Some of what we discovered was so powerful, I was not even
allowed near it. In such times, I was allowed to drift off on
my own for a bit. Being so young, my mind was free of most
judgements and biases of this world. As we traveled, I was able
to see the various factions of this world and their strive for
power, money, freedom, peace, destruction, etc. I also
witnessed those innocents who were caught-up in the fighting.

I remember very vividly a time when my parents and I were
forced to hide in a crate as the forces of light and dark
clashed outside. The fear is what I remember most. Being afraid
of what might happen. Fear of losing my parents. After it was
all over, I remember being angry. Angry at both sides for their
senseless fighting. Angry at them for the countless dead upon
the groud, and angry at them for endangering the lives of myself
and those I loved. Being so young, I was simply not accustomed
to this world. I still had much to learn...

We continued in our travels, and our search for years. That
is until I was 14. In the spring of my 14th year, my parents
recieved a letter telling them of some artifact that they had
been searching for their entire careers. I remember their
excitement, and the spark in their eyes. This was the only
time that I was not allowed to join them in their quest. I
was left with a family friend in Udgaard. I remember, quite
vividly, as they walked out of the southern gate. My mother
turned to me and smiled. The most beautiful smile I've ever
witnessed. Then she turned, and they left. That was the last
time either of them were ever seen or heard from again.

Humble Beginnings

Oh, where to begin? In my travels, I have seen many wonderous things.
Feats of great strength, powerful magics wielded with such finesse,
curious species both large and small. I guess, at some point I thought
I should write it all down. As much as I can, at least. Thus, I sit on
this lonely island and I write. We shall start, as custom, at the
beginning...

I was born in the city of Udgaard to my wonderful parents: Tenebrius
Amberfoot and Julienne Amberfoot. A curious couple, they were, as my
father was a svirfneblin and my mother was a human. A rather tall human
at that. She stood nearly six feet tall, and my father a mere three
feet and six inches. Oh I'm sure you can imagine the looks we would get
as we marched through the streets. Though their love was truest, for
sure. A love that was almost palpable. They were both archeologists of
sorts, you see. Studying long lost arcane artifacts of the past. It
was their shared passion. Along with each other, of course.

Though I was indeed born in Udgaard, we did not stay there long at
all. My parents' work did not allow for much stability as far as
location was concerned. One week we could be struggling through the
deserts of Hamsah, then possible a year in Blackwater Swamp, only
to move on again shortly thereafter. It was a nomadic life, for
sure, but we were happy. My parents never left me behind. I was
always right with them in their adventures. I would help where I
could and learned much of the flows of magic through them. Those
are the days I like to remember. When we were happy. When we were
together.
