Description

Long, thin feathers of dark gray fall tightly down the body of this male
arial. The coloring is interrupted by pure white around the neck and down
the middle of his chest. Standing just under six feet in height, he is
kept aloft by tall, compact wings that stretch out to give him a wingspan
barely wider than he is tall. Supple muscles are just thick enough to draw
attention to the powerful physique hidden beneath his feathers. Three
slender talons rest opposite a thicker claw on each foot, a natural weapon
from the heritage of his past. Black orbs look out from either side of a
narrow face behind a lengthy, thin beak.

Chapter 12

Growth

I sat down on a high branch in the Tree quietly, finding a rare quiet time
away from the hunt to think. It feels like the hunt has been going for a long
time. I had become a thorn to the lawmen and imperials, yet a new batch of
both seemed to come every time I had one gone. This fight was beginning to
feel endless, but they did not belong in the cycle and I would find their
end.

Thinking on the cycle always brought me to thoughts of Amaranthe. It had been
some time since I had last seen her, but I still often thought back to when
the Goddess had blessed me as one of her own. I was not fond of sharing this
pack with Andira, but in Amaranthe's acceptance of her I found what I had
long been missing - a mother. I was not just any pup of the pack now and was
not sure I would listen to my birth mother if she were alive, yet this one I
would.

With the new duties of leading a pack came the longing for the ones lost
before. I had found much wisdom in Jawn Foote but all must die in the end. I
was proud to be chosen to lead the pack and the faith of the Ancients. I
would have a tough time trying to live up to him, but I had given this much
thought and had resolved to lead where the path and Ancients took me. I would
use the wisdom I had gained from him, but knew only those out of touch with
Thar-Eris strove to be who they weren't.

The cry of a hawk woke me from my reverie. I spotted it as it landed on a
tree nearby. It occurred to me that the tree had been a sapling when I first
found my place here but had since grown to near what its full height would
be. Even knowing and following the cycles, changes sometimes crept up on me.
I thought of the young well-spoken if quiet wood-elf I had been with my
father. I then thought of the hunts with my pack now, my burning anger and
eagerness that kept my speech clipped as I ran with speed and a hint of
wildness at my prey. Then when my blood cooled I could sit and speak with
others more naturally than I ever had with my father. I even had the oddest
of female callers whispering of her yearns to me. I was still not sure how to
handle this from as much an oddity as myself, an elemental with drow and
human in her blood craving a feathered wood-elf. It seems more than just the
tree had changed.

Chapter 11

Paws

I had taken to shelter in the above ground root system of a tree for the
night. A chilly night left me bundled underneath a collection of furs. The
night had been a quiet one with rare safety that pushed me into a deep
slumber. My eyes began to move with speed underneath my eyelids as a rare
dream came to me.

I was a young wolf on his first hunt. I had been a pup and would soon be a
wolf, but was fully neither right now. My mother, the alpha of this pack, was
behind me. The rest of the pack was fanned out on both sides of me, pushing
the boar where they wanted it. They begin to dart in and nip at is flanks,
drawing blood before returning to the safety of the trees. As they begin to
weaken it, I know that to truly be one of the pack I must approach and finish
the boar.

I begin to approach the boar slowly and silently through some brush. I glance
down at my paw and see it holding a sword. This should feel unnatural, but
does not. I drop the sword. It does not feel right, the length cumbersome in
this brush. I take another step and see a mace in my other paw. I drop the
mace. It also does not feel right, the weight too restrictive. I close to
where I will strike from without disturbance, the tension in me building as I
prepare to jump. I jump with great power, knocking the boar off its feet as I
hit it. I know I should be fighting with my teeth and quickness, but
something comes over me. The boar rights itself quickly and tries to gore me,
but I block with my paws. How did I do that? My paws do not even feel hurt. I
begin to strike at the boar with my paws, in quick succession. The last hit
breaks its neck. How is that possible?

I awake and sit up with swiftness at the sudden clarity in my mind, looking
down at my hands with new knowledge. The Ancients have blessed me, and I will
use this blessing to cull that which should not be.

Chapter 10

Feathers

A mesmerizingly big rainbow appeared one day that was visible from nearly all
of Thar-Eris. I knew this to be a rare experience and quickly followed the
path to find it ending in the Emerald Forest. A short and stumpy being
somewhat resembling a man was there. He was looking for lucky charms, and
willing to trade a potential blessing for them. I watched as the first to
bring a charm to him asked to be as fast as an arial. The leprechaun looked
the assassin up and down and quickened his metabolism, but it was a short
lived spell. I realized that this leprechaun would find ways to twist words.
I next watched a gnome come and give him a charm, asking to be heartier in
trade. The leprechaun said this request was not a selfish one and granted it.
I first gave the leprechaun a scroll that could be used to plague an enemy,
which would bring great luck to any that fought it. The leprechaun rejected
this as unlucky.

I thought long and hard before taking the scroll and trading it for a charm
found near the Tree. This charm aided in protecting one against spells, what
could be very lucky for one. The leprechaun found this pleasing and asked
what I wished in trade. I thought about the truth that the request would be
twisted if too selfish or too large. I had not long ago spoken with a
guildmaster over how to heal more like an owl and thought perhaps the
leprechaun would teach me about this even further. I said to the leprechaun
that 'I wish to heal more like the birds of the skies.' A sick feeling grew
in my stomach quickly as I realized the words were to open to twisting. The
leprechaun said 'Well, now, that's a wish I have n'heard before, and I've
been grantin' wishes for a long time...' The leprechaun began to stretch his
fingers before saying 'You ask to be more like a bird, and so need only speak
the word. A wish you ask, a wish I give, ever-changed you'll be as long as ya
live!' A few moments later a tingling sensation began in my skin. Feathers
had begun to sprout from my skin at random intervals. I scowled at the
obvious twisting of my words before moving a bit in the air and feeling
different. I soon understood that the feathers lent me some measure of
agility in the open air.

The trade was apparent, and many of my more vain kin would have found
themselves in despair. It was not the wish I had truly wanted, but one I
would find great use of. I found myself in a rare cheery mood as I left the
forest.

Chapter 9

Home

When I first started working against the lawmen of the towns, they called me
a wild savage and told me to go back to my tree. I had not given much thought
to others who may have seen the truth of the wilds, but now realized it
likely. As I continued to fight and learn, I found others who lived like I
did to join me. One such was Kagrekkal, a kin to me that first spoke of
Thar-Eris and its return. I had realized this Tree must be focused on the
return of Thar-Eris and sought it out.

I found an old man whom many called the Harbinger named Jawn Foote. The wilds
seemed to respond to him and answer his call for aid. He was one who truly
seemed in touch with Thar-Eris. I sought to find a home among the limbs of
the Tree he called home, and soon after speaking he followed what he called a
feeling and brought me beneath its branches. I found myself still hesitant
within about following anyone, knowing the wolves of the pack often have a
leader but it is contested position. The alpha was not always the biggest or
the quickest though, and as I began to watch Jawn I soon realized this was
the case here as well. The druid did not bark orders or give rules; he simply
did what he thought was right and expected others to do the same. The
seemingly wisest among the Tree led.

Chapter 8

Advanced teachings

As I began to climb closer to the pinnacle of my guild, the guildmaster
pulled me aside and spoke of the rare teachings that can be learned from
monks. The monks do not often take the time to teach a person more than two,
but what they teach can be life changing.

I spoke to the firs monk of my past and healing I had learned but no longer
wasted on others. I had found the further I traveled from home, the harder
time I had healing myself as so much of the plant life was different. The
monk taught me of those who would endure great sieges, what they learn to
live off of and heal through. I learned to go from incredibly hurt to back
into the fray incredibly quickly. I could sit in the tree, waiting for days
while eating and drinking little to find the perfect time to strike.

I spoke to the second monk of my future, of the flowing fighting style of
wood-elves and swordsmen in general. The desire to never be where an enemy
thought I should, always striking and evading. The monk taught me to use the
light and shadows of battle to evade and strike my enemies, my quiet
footsteps an asset in the wilds.

Slash and crush

I found my training in the place of my birth, Evermoon. I had no memories of
it, and found their dislike for the law at odds with their need to have such
a large force of guards. As I had found no wandering warriors to teach, the
guild here served its purpose. Many of those who trained with and against me
found comfort in the quiet solitude and relative safety there, but I felt
unease and would wander the woods near by finding shelter in the tree's high
branches or deep hollows. I took up the sword as my first weapon to master.
It felt powerful in deft hands while reminding me of the long knives of my
father. The precise strikes while flowing out of harms way reminded me of the
way wolves would strike then fade into the mists. I had pondered the use of
smaller blades but after watching the guildmaster teach these techniques I
found their likelihood to hurt the wielder as often as the ones the wielder
fought disquieting.

After a particularly dark day of observing the wilds, the flow of life around
me inspired me. I sought out a tribal artist and had my flowing tattoos done,
to remind me that even those on top are still not outside the cycle.

I studied the sword for a long time before being declared ready to learn my
next weapon choice, and found that the powerful sword was not satisfying when
rage truly gripped me. It was when I was angry at myself that day for
slowness in training that I picked up my first mace. The weight and heft of
swinging it truly let me vent myself and I soon chose it as my next weapon to
master.

Wildlife

I wandered through the plains and forests west of the jade mountains,
learning to survive on the land. When I wanted water I would search until I
could find a stream. When I wanted food I would find nuts and berries or
herbs I knew to be safe to eat. I found myself comfortable in the wilds
there, and found interest in watching the wildlife interact. Every creature
and plant seemed to have its place. The wolf would hunt the hare, which would
eat the nuts and grass, which would spread the trees and grass, to a
seemingly endless cycle. The wolf did not hunt every hare incessantly, but
just often enough to feed itself. While there was a cycle, there were the
strongest that were on top and in control. The strong truly survived. It felt
like healing was an aberration of this, while letting that which was supposed
to die truly die was fulfilling the way all was supposed to be.

The anger that I had found inside myself with the death of my father did not
leave when I avenged him. It still simmered. The glazed over eyes of my dead
father often entered my thoughts unbidden, a reminder of what protecting the
weak provided you. It was during these thoughts that I would find solace in
being the one to end Jrarhn's life. I began to realize that in killing Jrarhn
I had made Thera better. The next thought for me was who or what else needed
to be removed to make Thera a better place.

It was with these thoughts on my mind that I wandered far enough south to
gain sight of the city of Seantryn Modan. Every purpose of the city, from its
walls to the guardsman seemed to be designed to protect those who could not
protect themselves. The wolf pack taught its young to fight and hunt; it did
not sit the wolf pup down and provide everything it needed until the pup was
useless. Why should we treat everyone else any differently?

I soon realized that these cities with their laws and protections needed to
be destroyed. Those that would protect them needed to be culled as well. The
weak needed to be culled or forced to become strong. Death would release the
poison of their presence, nature's way of mending Thera. My own weakness
first needed to be remedied, and I went out to begin training to fight.

Chapter 4

Awakening

I awoke a bit later to an agonizing pain in my leg. The past few hours came
back suddenly, causing me to sit up quickly. The pain from my leg alone
almost made me pass out again. I looked across the floor to my father and
realized by the amount of still blood around him that he was dead. A glance
through the window made me think I had been passed out for half an hour. A
slow burning anger began to seep into my heart. I started to pull myself up
by using the table we used to use for patients. It took me another half an
hour to stand, but I was finally able to by using a crutch on the ground. I
began to gather a few things, bread, water, some basic herbs and bandages,
and the longest knife my father had owned. Many villagers had joked that it
was longer than most swords but it had suited amputations well. I made my way
out with these few provisions and began to look for Jrarhn.

I found him at his house, passed out with the wine bottle resting in his
arms. Looking at the knife in my hand, I no longer found it suiting. Instead
I knelt next to Jrarhn, barely feeling the burning pain in my leg. I took the
wine bottle in one hand and opened his mouth and began to pour. He tried to
fight it at first, the little strength left in him trying to push me off. I
had held down the strongest of men to keep them from moving during surgery
and barely noticed his struggle. As I urged his throat to take more and more
alcohol he stopped struggling and began to fade. I stood slowly, this time
only needing the crutch to stand.

I watched the last of his life fade from his body. It became obvious to me
that there were too many who tried to heal without ever thinking if the
person deserved it. I knew I would no longer serve to heal others, saving
them from their foolish decisions. I would.. I did not know that answer it
seemed. I walked out of the village intent on finding myself.

Jrarhn's Accident

One morning a hunting party carried in Jrarhn who was passed out. He was a
drunk and an idiot, but also the best tracker the village had. My father
began to work on him immediately, as I gathered from those who brought him in
that Jrarhn had been gored by a boar. We worked together as a team quite well
now. As he cleaned the wounds I administered herbs to dull the pain and slow
the breathing down. He would live, though it was as much luck as skill as no
vital organs had been harmed. We began to clean immediately and left him
passed on the bed to gather some food.

We returned later that morning to find Jrarhn in the midst of a disaster.
Bandages and herbs were scattered everywhere. He was digging through a
cupboard when my father approached him and asked 'What do you look for?'.
Jrarhn stood on wobbling legs and turned to look at my father as he said
'Where is the wine?!'. I responded 'Your wounds are serious, we will go find
you some wine if you will rest some more' to try to calm him down. Jrarhn
started to move for the door but my father intercepted him and said 'Why
don't you rest some first?'. Jrarhn eyes had a wild gleam as he pushed at my
father than stabbed up with a concealed surgical knife. The knife penetrated
deeply into my fathers neck, dropping him to the floor immediately. I moved
to go to my father but Jrarhn heard me move and threw the knife at me. The
knife sunk deeply into my thigh. I fell to the ground as Jrarhn stumbled out
of our home. I crawled to my fathers side and began to apply pressure to his
neck while looking for bandaging. I was able to find some near my knee and
wrap it around his neck. I began to feel light headed and saw that I was
bleeding heavily from my thigh. Looking at the bandage beginning to soak
through my fathers neck, I realized that I would have to save myself before
I could attempt to save him. I found the necessary herbs and packed the wound
before sewing it up. Each stitch caused an amount of pain that I would have
never realized. As I pulled the needle through for the last stitch I fell
sideways and passed out.

Apprenticeship

I studied for many years before I was able to begin actually helping my
father treat the villagers. Many young elves from the village had grown and
left during this time. I learned of herbs, removing foreign objects from the
body, setting bones, and stitching up wounds. I was also taught to not scream
or jerk in surprise or panic at the unexpected, as these could lead to
grievous errors. While I would work to stitch up the remains of the most
recent hunt, my father would yell or scream or throw objects at me until it
he no longer noticed me jerk. It became a cruel game designed to push me to
my limits to force failure. I was kept awake for two days and then forced to
work in the rain. It was a long time before he conceded I had learned what
was necessary, but when he did there was no question of it any longer.

I was kept so busy that I never really had time to gain friends or sneak away
with girls. I learned to keep others calm enough to gain what knowledge was
necessary to treat the patient. I learned to communicate with others without
ever telling any of myself to them. It was a lonely time but a happy time as
well. I was closer than I had ever been with my father and he was proud of
me.

Lallenyha

As long as I can remember, my father, Erkaze, and I have lived in the village
of Lallenyha. He is the healer here, using herbs and thread to tend to the
sick and patch the wounded. I roamed the village freely as a child, a safe
carefree place for an imagination to roam. I often dreamt of a complete
family with a father who had time for his son. That time feels like a time
long past. I now study under my father to learn to heal. There is so much to
learn but I am eager as I finally get to spend time with him.

I often thought of asking about my mother again, but I had asked enough
through the years to realize that I would not receive new answers. Raena was
the most beautiful elf he had ever seen. They had met when she had visited
his mentor's shop to trade materials, both of them seamster's by trade. He
had fallen for her immediately, and she had died a short time later when I
was born. This was always the wording he would use if he even felt like
repeating the tale, otherwise I was sent on my way.
