Description

This pretty little gnome's most noticeable trait is her bright pink hair,
which has a healthy shine to it. When she doesn't have a helmet on, she wears
it up in two bouncy ponytails. Long lashes adorn her bright blue eyes, which
peek out from either side of a button nose. Her soft-looking skin is fair,
but her cheeks are full of rosy youthful vigor. She is slender, and stands at
about three-and-a-half feet in height. She clearly puts a lot of thought into
her equipment's upkeep. Her armor shines if it has been recently polished. Th
insignia of the Blood Tribunal is stamped on her helmet, breastplate, and
gauntlets.

Provost, Magistrate Isihl and I thought it would be a good test of critical
thinking and ability to interpret the law to use some recent events as source
material for an extended interview question. Here is a script that could be
followed:

"The following is a real scenario that happened in Galadon. I want you to
consider the facts of the story and, when you're ready, state what course of
action you would take in the scenario I describe."

--At this point you should check to make sure whoever you're interviewing
--understands what you're asking them to do before you launch the scenario!

"You are a magistrate of thirty-some-odd ranks, and a mage. A number of
criminals of all different ranks and associations are gathering around and in
Galadon. An Outlander invoker, a flagged criminal, has assaulted the Captain,
bringing him near death before withdrawing. In the meantime, a Battlerager
warrior of your own rank, who happens to be a flagged criminal who is intent
on harming, you stands just outside the Spire."

"There is another Battlerager warrior, this one NOT a flagged criminal, who
is standing with him at the Market Square. You decide that it is your duty to
bring the criminal to justice, prepare yourself for battle, and set upon him.
While you are fighting, you are almost certain you hear shouting that
indicates that the OTHER Battlerager, the one who is not currently flagged a
criminal, has entered the fight (a clear-cut criminal act, Law 1). The battle
could hinge upon your next few decisions. What should you do?"

--most thinking you can, to try to get a better feel for the applicant. Once
--the conversation runs its course, move on to the next prompts:

Salutations, dad!

I've been meaning to write for ages now, but I've been so busy! You weren't
kidding when you said it's a whole wide world out there. So I'll try to catch
you up on what's been going on in my life since I left - just the highlights,
or else this would be way too long!

The biggest news is obviously that I took a job working for the Blood Tribunal.
I made my formal application after a few run-ins with violent criminals that
were pretty badly in need of some Ironjaw whupping. Hope you and mom approve! I
really like the lifestyle so far, and guess what? I already got my transfer
from Seantryn Modan (gross) to Hamsah Mu'tazz (excellent! colorful! exciting!)
approved. I think the new Provost (he got promoted right before I signed up) is
pretty happy with me so far, which is nice. He seems like a solid sort of
fellow, which I guess you have to be if you spend that much time as a hyena!

I earned a high enough rank in the warrior's guild to pick my first weapon
specialization: swords! I thought you'd approve, what with them being your go
to choice and all. I thought it'd be nice to be able to defend myself pretty
well while still putting out some hurt when it counts. I need to think about my
second, though. I'm leaning towards whips and flails right now - something to
help me do my job better, since criminals seem to be particularly slippery. But
luckily I don't have to decide today!

What else? Oh, I cracked a couple giant skulls - they had it coming, one was
trying to intimidate me into giving up my rings and the other was a filthy rat
bastard Outlander who kept trying to prevent me and another Magistrate from
getting the Scales back. Between the two of us, there's not a lot better than
whipping a nasty giant who thought the little gnome wasn't going to put up a
fight. "Mwa- ha- ha- ha," as they say.

Basic character profile for Wiglaf

1. Wiglaf can often seem to be a little silly, because she's a gnome and she
tends to get really excited about the things that excite her. She's in on the
joke when she notices she's acting silly, and sometimes even plays it up to
see what kind of a reaction she'll get.

2. She is basically out for herself, but tries to be respectful of others
both because she enjoys having company and because she thinks its the right
thing to do.

3. She appreciates the importance of a structured, Lawful society - "the only
thing worse than a Svirf is a thief", as she might say. Civilization is
important because it represents progress, and law is important to her in the
abstract because it helps preserve civilization as well as for more practical
reasons, primarily that there's safety in knowing that the people who cause
trouble and commit crimes have to pay a price for it.

4. She loves exploring the world - it's what drove her to leave home, after
all! She has a serious passion for learning about new things and seeing new
places.

5. Her small stature is a point of pride for her as a warrior. She spends a
lot of time trying to think up new ways to use it to her advantage in a fight
and takes great pride in her abilities as a warrior such that they are.

Outside the walls

After many years of schooling, Wiglaf began to feel restless. She was nearly an
adult and had been thinking for some time that she might like to see the world
outside Hillcrest. She had been in touch with some members of the warrior's
guild, and through those connections she lined up a job guarding the merchants
and farmers on their trips into Udgaard to trade copper goods, carrots, and
other goods.

It was a relatively easy job, although she did get some experience fighting off
the occasional bandit or rogue jaette. Most of the trips were dull, and she
passed time talking to the farmers, other guards, or travelers, trying to pry
stories from them about fantastic places they'd seen or adventures they'd taken
part in.

The guard job lasted a little while longer than she expected but eventually
Wiglaf decided it was time to strike out on her own. Leaving Hillcrest was a
big decision, but her parents were supportive after she explained her thinking
and, anyways, had known for a while that she was destined for a more exciting
life than the village had to offer. Roinald had done a bit of travelling in his
youth and gave her a letter of introduction to take to the warrior's guild in
Galadon, which he suggested would be a great place to get started with her own
adventures...

Wiglaf's life in Hillcrest

Wiglaf Roinalda Wilfreda Copperdust Biggolung Glittering Ironjaw was born and
raised in Hillcrest. She is the second daughter and fifth child born to her
her parents, Roinald and Wilfreda Ironjaw. Roinald was a well respected guard
in the town watch, and Wilfreda enjoyed cooking, naming her children, and
styling hair. Like most Hillcrest gnomes, her parents raised their children as
cautious and considerate individuals, mindful of their community yet with a
strong sense of self-preservation that, to someone lacking the wisdom of the
gnomish folk, might be mistaken for selfishness.

When she was about 25 years old, Wiglaf was sent to school to become the sort
of well-rounded citizen that Hillcrest gnomes are expected to be. Her school
years went by quickly and she learned plenty, although her teachers never quite
managed to tame her insatiable curiosity nor her youthful zeal for exploring
new ideas. However, to her father's delight, what Wiglaf really excelled at was
fighting. In the self-defense classes that most of her peers were less than
enthusiastic about, she was almost always the most exemplary student.

After school hours, she loved frolicking around with the sons and daughters of
the farmers who lived on the east side of town. Many were the days she would
come home from dinner covered in mud, with a whole new set of scrapes and
bruises, the result of long wrestling matches and childishly violent games of
chase.
