Phen the Force of Nature

Description

An ever swirling blueish hue fills the golden tan of Phen's
vibrant face. Deep and brilliant blue eyes are set back into
golden shaped orbital pits of Phen's face. His eyes seem surrounded
by a brightness that is fresh and intense. They peer out from beneath
a cowled robe woven of leathers, bark, leaves and other natural
sinews of the wood. His autumn orange and deeply crimson hair flow
richly across his shoulders and back. His physical characteristics
seem vibrant compared to his earthly toned belongings and coverings.

Phen is rather small for a wood-elf, standing a hair taller than
five feet tall. His lithe, slender frame, move gracefully and freely,
as if he glided upon a cushion of air. The faint aroma and scent of
a raw peat can be detected in the air about Lucan, as is a a fine layer
of slippery moss were moistened, releasing a fresh bouquet of earth.

Looking closer at his rather unadorned body, you see a tangle of berries
in a small pouch, some crimson and blue, others pink and yellow.

Chapter 7

A Plan of the Ancients, the Emerald Oak.

Phen had another meeting with the Awakened Ancient after
having time to speak with the Harbinger. He spoke of new
blood, and having plans set in motion for Phen. Plans that
would become known to him soon.

Phen continues to thank the ancients for the blessings they
have bestowed upon him. A new life, a new chance to seep blood
into the ground that is not his own. A chance of rebirth where
once there was only death.

While Foedett might be old, Phens body continues to give way
to the never-ending battle against the defilers and oppressors.
The cycles of the moon bring Phen great power, but also great moment
of pause to think of the cycle, and the renewal of the Thar-Eris.

The awakened has foretold to Phen that he will be known to the world
as one of the Emerald Oak. A symbol of the Awakened Ancient that the
free men of the world, no matter how corrupt, might see. They may
come to seek guidance on the path of the Thar-Eris. Or Perhaps thorns.

Perhaps, Phen wonders, he will be able to teach them the path of
freedom. The path of life and death. The path of chaos. Perhaps
he will just have to kill them.

Like a tumbling stone down a mountain, the winds shall blow its course
and chaos shall be the victor, as always.

Chapter 6

Ties of Chaos and Life to Creation

The Awakened Ancient had tasked Phen with rising beyond just
the path of chaos. He had requested that on his journey, Phen
find the time of chaos and life to creation.

This epiphany of chaos, and of life, is that it can never
be destroyed. Life, and the freedom it is instinctually compelled
towards, cannot be vanquished. Life finds a way, through control, through
restriction, through any terrible binding construct of civilization -
Eventually life shall find a foothold.

It is this unpredictable chaos of life that lends itself to great creation.

If a breeze sets forth a whirlwind of dry leaves, which land ever so
gently in multitude upon a bed of moss. That bed of moss devours the
leaves, and the ground beneath becomes moist. The ground gives way, and
creates a landslide of earth and water. Stone and stump tumble down and
land upon the root of a great tree.

Through all this havoc, and uncertainty - what certainty is there for
this root? Shall it find a way around the rock, as would a stream down
a mountain? Does life continue for this great tree - or shall the
destructive chaos of wind, earth, water and fire, end its reign.

If this root shall perish, so it shall continue to grow and create life.
It?Aos strength shall nourish the ground, and the ground shall then nourish
that which would blossom on the light of the moon. If the root strong enough,
it can push the rubble aside, and reach into the sky to the light of the sun.

In the chaos of destruction, is endless creation. The manner in which
this creation occurs is completely uncontrollable.

Phen looks forward to his next talk with the Awakened Ancient. He wishes
to be known as his pupil to the world, and one of the Tree.

Chapter 5

The Invisible Hand

The corpse of Glandiun Moonhaven, the Drunken Bear Rider is
crumpled over a small dagger held in its hand. His blood is
still soaking into the ground of the earthen ground of the
druids guild.

His life taken, not in agony, not in pain, not beset by plagues
and diseases. His life taken to serve a warrant of the law against
his name.

How can it be, that even within the heart of the wilderness, within
the sanctity of his very own guild, a druid, one whom finds strength
in the earth, could fear the laws of men in such a place. How could such
rule be enforced not by the solders of that order, but by the very
wilds that should rise up against this iron grip of order.

No, this is not to be solved by simple torching of the cities, this
cannot be resolved by merely sowing the seeds of change, and aiding
the wilds to cover over the remnants of civilization. This requires
one to truly embrace life, to embrace chaos.

To understand, and know, within your heart - Nothing can be controlled.

Yes, you can be taught to live upon the lands, to be free of oppression,
and even to finally see the invisible chains upon your spirit. But to see
that you are truly free, to see that order holds no sway over your life.
To see that you can cast away these chains by simply declaring your
disobedience. You cannot be taught chaos, you must experience it,
you must live it.

Perhaps if Glandiun had known this, in his heart, he would not have
drove a dagger through it. He would not have been moved by an invisible
hand, moved by compulsion to obey, even when none are present to order.

Chapter 4

Life and Chaos

Phen has made made contact with those of the Tree, especially
those within the Warder branch. They are welcoming and kind; all
very eager to aid Phen, and take him up on his offer to aid them.

In fact, Praemothar, the Sunwarden, had even called upon Phen to
rescue her from a tree. Such trust seems to be common among the
warders. Interestingly enough, Praemothar was not frightened
of the Imperials, but of the Reavers within the Tree. A rot within
many of the Warders call it. A strange notion that the Warders do
not see the necessity of such things.

To date, Phen has not met a reaver, although he suspects they would
feel the same way of the warders. Phen has decided to watch how the other
Harbingers handle the conflict, and trust his instinct in regards to the cycle.
Such is the way of cycles and seasons, balance and chaos.

On Chaos, The Awakened Ancient, Strienat Greenhoof, had asked Phen
to think of the intersections between chaos and life. A very profound task.

Strangely, his mind drifted to an image. A familiar one by now in his dreams.
An image of a forgotten bloom, clinging to life. By very chance to be
upon that field, upon that moment, and life so precariously balanced upon
so many uncontrolled and unforeseen factors. Completely unpredictable. Wild.

Instead of finding one or two intersections of life and chaos, Phen could
hardly separate the two. In all facets of life existed chaos. Life was
chaos. From the moment of birth, randomness chooses sex, to an unending
catastrophe of choices leading to death. From two identical sprigs of
thistle that grow, one into a shard of stone, another into the forgiving
shade of an oak - death and life for each is chaos.

Phen looks forward to his next talk with The Ancient, he wishes to speak
of what he has learned, and of growing Strienat his Emerald Oak, a place
in the wilds he might teach to his children.

Chapter 3

The Blossom of Life

Alas, one hundred and fifty years of destruction presented other
challenges. For I had decimated giant swaths of land in the pursuit
of life. I set off summer day to find a virgin wood, one pristine
beauty to continue our magical experimentation upon. I believed we
were close to cracking the spell to bring eternal death to life. I
believed it lay within my own blood.

However, I needed a wood still pure, and untouched. One where the
spirit of the Thar-Eris would be flush. One where I could connect
with her directly in order to enslave her spirit to the dark magics
my master had taught me.

For days I traversed terrible landscapes of brush, thorn and root.
I slaughtered deer and antelope by the dozens, only gathering the
softest parts of their flesh for my stews, the rest could rot. My
water skins had run dry just as I happened across a pool of fresh
spring water, laying in the shade of a mighty oak.

Looking up into the sky, I felt I had found my spot. My instincts
had led me to the perfect place to begin my experimentation. My legs
were sore, and my aging body ached. I was not used to this type of
travel.

As I laid down, my eyes drifted to a young blossom, a flower as it began
to bloom. It felt vaguely familiar as I drifted to sleep, it's image
somehow disturbing me. . .

My dreams were surreal. I felt the wind howl, and a zephyr literally lift
me from the ground. I was thrown to the base of a tree, where root and
branch grew through my body. Stem and twig pierced my skin, entering my
veins and siphoning my blood, in a vicious attack.

I opened my eyes just in time to see a blazing visage of brilliant emerald
rush before my eyes, I opened my mouth to shout, and as I did, leaves and
branch rushed in, expanding my body from the inside.

For fifty years I slumbered, encased under a great oak, what I had felt
was an attack, was not an attack at all, but a rescue. For fifty years
I slumbered, as the earth and wood siphoned out the poison and pain.
For fifty years I slumbered, dreaming of a fallen flower, to which I would
heal. For fifty years the spirit rejuvenated me, and returned me to her.
immortality. All at once, I once again, felt peace.

Then I awoke.

Chapter 2

The Undying Wood.

The following one hundred and fifty years were simple for Phen.
Simple in that his world existed of contradictions. A compelling
paradox of magic, death, and life.

I was trained to destroy life. Destroy the ground, poison the water,
and bring destruction against the spirit of the land. For purpose.
For life I was told.

"Don't you wish it to rise, then, my little Fae beast." My cruel master
would taunt me. I was a slave to death. Ironically, to only bring life.

I would utter the words, and command the natural elements to rise once
again. Life Juxtaposed against death. Rise damn you! Sapling after Sapling
would succumb. Then tree after tree. Raising animals was not our goal.
For this, the master did not need me. He needed my free spirit, and my
connection with the mother. I was to be his death bringer. We grew brave
and would attempt to raise entire oaks to our bidding. Our ambitious was
only met with failure.

A hundred years of destruction. We became no closer to our goal. A goal
that somehow, had become my own. An undying forest, one immune to pestilence,
disease, famine, poison, and rot. One forever gray, and colorless.
An immortal wood. A new magic to uproot the mother, and banish her forever
from the prime plane. For all things died I told myself, why should they
die at all, when I can force them to live. Command them to stay.

Fifty more years passed. Thousands upon thousands of failed experiments.
My life was regimented. Orderly and controlled. Each step of death had
purpose, each step to reanimate this life, controlled. A unwitting slave
trained to enslave.

Master had drained a portion of my life, claiming it would aid us in our
cause. As my youth began to flee, so too, did my conscious memory of any
life before the Master. Life before death.

My dreams became twisted, as I unknowingly fought against the living hell
I was subjugated into. My spirit, slumbering, arose from the depths of my
heart. Life against Death. Chaos against Order. And as life springs
eternal, so did my instinctual spirit spring forth. To lead my away.

Chapter 1

Dos zhal tlu arlathil aphyon

Some things should remain slumbering. Some power should be kept
from mortal hands, lest the world be torn asunder. Life and Death.
Order and Chaos. A heart of Oak to withstand the passage of time,
the intense flame, howling wind, and pounding rain.

Phen was young, once. His earliest memory is not of violence, or
fear, but of peace. He gazed, as perhaps an older boy would at a girl,
longing for an embrace, at a simple flower. Not a flower in full bloom,
not one crisp and fresh, smoldering with dew, but one upon deaths knell.
A flower tormented by disease, and by pain.

He watched the single leaf cling in desperation to the stem, like a
parasitic host upon a body, or perhaps, the opposite. He wondered. Was
the stem the parasite?

Perhaps the host is the land itself, and the flower the parasite. Tapping
his cheek while he rested upon his elbows, he looked eye level at the
wretched, dangling leaf.

Is it not strange. He spoke aloud, "in death you shall rise again."

The words escaped his lips on some unknown and unwilled desire. Words
he knew in truth, for the cycle of life has inglorious ends and messy
beginnings. These words, words spoken in an innocent understanding that
captured the nearby interest of a passerby, unknown to him.

The next feeling Phen knew, at the ripe young age of 6, was peace. A
deep slumber he had not felt before. A slumber of death.

When he awoke, a dark cousin of his lifted his chin, and wiped free
a dribble of spit and snot that had run down his chin. The dark creature
whispered the words, "Dos zhal tlu arlathil aphyon." Rise, beast, he
commanded. I am your Master. For you, we have grand plans.
