Description

A squat little being stands before you, mostly garbed in several
drab robes and bindings. The tattered hood that dangles behind his
large mellon-shaped head has an oblong stain on the fringe and two
small holes about the size of his eyes, just above it. Those large
milky-white eyes catch the flitter of any passing light and can be
seen darting about curiously. His large, rugged, nose juts outward
from his face and ends with a sharp crook downward at the tip. A
trim, neatly sculpted jawline rounds out the bulbous cranium and
features nicely. Several movements under the robes eludes to a
physically weak member of his race but it is hard to discern the
greatest details through layered clothing. One final one is...

The final augmentation is back to the humanoid form for all
of those within the guild but the transformation from serpent
is a keen one. Instinct, senses of taste commingled through
scent, vanishing, and the most notable loss of regenerative
properties of flesh are all potent but just as the road led
away, so does it lead the return, for that much needed rest.

The truth of the matter is that if there was enough flow of
magic then I may not return to my normal, svirfnebli, form.
Simply, the sensations of the reptilian or animalistic brains
are so enticing but my magic is not infinite and couldn't
sustain the vast strain on my mental acuity or concentration.

The most unique and misunderstood sensations is derived from
the tension felt when coiling up in preparation for a strike,
fangs bared, rattles shaking, and every fiber of flesh and
sinew drawn taunt. Certainly no other feeling to match. One
nuance that still tickles me is the way my phalanges change
and undergo metamorphosis into the rattle and buttons tip.

The beginning is always accompanied by different sensations.
As the normal bone structure begins to fade away and meld in
the new skeletal structure and the vertebrae sprout in ever
higher numbers, arms and legs are repurposed into ribs and
scales. The increased flow of magic brings the body alive
and the expedition of the fields and roads to new heights.

From the Slums.

Guargoux is a young svirfnebli who once lived in a dusty, dim,
dank, slum community not far from the marvelous home of the king,
lower Cragstone, which was overtaken, some great time ago, by a few
enterprising drow and duergar to enhance their commerce and trade
with one another and topsiders. After his unsightly neighborhood
was invaded and overtaken, he was thrown out and discarded because
of a physically weak body and they couldnt see raising him as a
house slave if his diminutive body wasnt at least hearty, it
wouldnt be worth the cost and effort theyd have to put in.

During this initial invasion, his parents were beaten, whipped, and
eventually, killed in order for the entrepreneurs to claim the land
for their enterprising goals. Fortunately, he didnt perish along
with them but it was only luck that a wondering mage happened to
come across the fallen baby. Although, in truth, it was due to
those loud shrill cries, like weevils burrowing into his
consciousness, interrupting his thoughts and concentration that the
child couldnt be ignored. To sate the child, he took him into his
care and raised him as if he was his own.

Chapter 2

The Magic, the Guild, the Balance.

While the years passed and he grew, he realized that he felt a deep
longing to be different, look different, be physically powerful and
that puts him on the path that determines where his life is
heading. Understanding the power of magic, after witnessing his
foster fathers craft, he believes that it and similar arts are to
be paramount to the pursuit of his lifelong goal.

Taking it upon himself, through an inherent curiosity, he pries
information from any books and stories that hes heard throughout
his upbringing and after some tumultuous concentration and theory
crafting, he decides on the guild of shape shifters. Through this
wonderful gift of magic, he discovers that he can potentially
change nearly any aspect about himself that hed desire, including
his physical strength through bodily modification.

At first he was indifferent about what happened because being so
young, he was unaware of what really transpired but as time
progresses, hes told of what happened and for a time, hes
extremely angry. Before long, his natural dedication to the stone
and balance brings a calm to his rage and he believes this is best
for the lands. It, Balance, is the natural order of things and is
of a worthy pursuit.

The first step all water magi must take, that initial Leap of
faith. Inside their mind, we all must sense the flow of the
magic within, have true faith in it, that it will allow us to
perform this act, that many would consider unstable. To us
it is life, the calm before the storm and the augmentation to
the beast dwelling within, that always yearns to be set free.

The second step for any shifter of shapes is the takeover. We
feel it rise up like a wave, crashing over with flushing flow
of blood and magical energy as our body undergo these traumatic
transformations. For those that, like myself, dwell within the
deep current waves, this is the time that our organs begin their
change, lungs become gills, bones to cartilage, teeth abounding
from newly formed sockets and the senses hastily begin changing.

The final step is the full immersion where the magical augment
is complete and a new form is taken. When augmented into a
denizen of the deep, a great shark, power flows through my very
essence. Muscular strength like I've never known within this
frail body of mine. Large tearing jaws evoke hydrophobia into
those who would rebuke the natural order and upset the balance.

The emergence is quite a stark contrast to the fully enveloped
bodys power and flow. As the magic wears or is called off,
the muscles draw down their enhanced strength and the senses
begin to dull. That first sharp breath as air is gulped from
the surface rather than infused through the gills serves as a
harsh reminder that no augmentation is infinite and all end.

Often accompanied by twinges of pain, the rapid change back to
our normal forms must both be mentally draining and a relief.
It is a shock to know that the physical strength has dissipated
but no further taxing mental load on the mind's power is felt.
This has to be the duality that perplexes all shape shifters.

The final re-emergence of our natural self as the cycle comes
full circle has to be a relief and and a curse. But, this is
the order of things. It is the means and the end to which we,
augmenters of shape and form, live our lives in the pursuit of
our goals, our magic, and, in my case, the life of balance.

Interdisciplinary Study.

Magic, what is magic.. what does it mean to study magic.. what are
magi, are they.. we.. scholars? To Guargoux, it is imperative that
those whom study magic, acknowledge that it is done from many
varying view and vantage points. This is of course, the most
orderly and right way. It isnt nor would it ever be wise for
Invokers and Conjurers to view magic through the same eyes as
Necromancers, Rangers, or Shapeshifters, nor would any combination
of such be insightful. If such were to happen, the discipline that
is magic would be a jumble of incoherence.

Through his perspective, he does not reject the differing vantage
points nor any special type of magic, only embraces and accepts
that all are equally important and viable. To study magic through
only one perspective, he believes, is commendable but such a task
only serves to narrow the view and although it does magnify certain
qualities, it equally dulls the overall usage of the accrued
knowledge.

Augmentation magic, being his forte, are and always will be his
favorites, unquestionably. But, through dedication and his varied
interdisciplinary approach to the study and assimilation of magic,
he believes that his desire to keep the balance upon the lands can
be achieved at a more reasonable and easier to maintain level, and
that too, is good.

Clarity in Conflict.

*Swoosh* *Sworp* and then a *Smash* as the hail of axes rained
down around him. They screamed as they passed by his head and he
felt the cool kiss of the blade as it brushed the skin of his
bobbed tail. The lighting quick reflexes of his feline
augmentation, its senses enthralling him, enlivening him, yet his
conscious mind baying him to retreat to better, more advantageous
territory. As his paws clawed the ground and off the bridge he
went, the giant villager did follow.

The rush of the waters around him brought a smile to his face as he
floated northward just enough for the giant to see him in the
distance. Just a few more yards, echoing in his thoughts. All the
while, his animal instinct was clawing to be released from the pit
of his stomach, it yearned for the clash. Still, the giant
followed, a bloodthirsty look about him seemed to overwhelm his
rational thought all together.

It was time. His claws began to retract and his hind legs melded
together, fur retracted, and row upon row of teeth sprouted from
his, now gaping, maw. Almost out of reflex, he bit a nearby carp.
The taste of blood pushing him into a frenzy, just in time for the
giants arrival. This time, the axes hit their mark, his tough
leathery hide bleeding profusely but at the same time, his fierce
bite taking chunks of flesh as it ripped and chomped the village
warrior.

Overcome by his lust for blood and oblivious to the gallons of life
spilling from his open wounds, the giant succumbed and crumpled
into the current with a red shadow drifting down stream. As the
fight ended and the rush of magic filled him with pride, a lone
speck of blood caught his attention. It had spattered on the bank,
nearby, a lone mark upon the river rock. River rock, it was just
like him, as balanced and as resilient as the stone of his people,
yet it was also marked, unlike the others. Like him.

So many days I find myself walking or running from one local
to another. Many times through the various roads and often
the waterways but road travel is usually easier on the aging
body and can be a little more peaceful. The walk helps to
clear the mind and ease the flow of magic as one absorbs the
majesty of the surroundings, wildlife, the flats or mountains.

As the flow of magic begins to accelerate within the body, a
few notable changes start to take hold. A slight tingle in
the extremities and the odd sensations as they begin to change
or outright absorb into the newly forming bone structure. I
