Description

An aura of black undulates around her, its tendrils caressing her and
recessing back into itself. Inside this aura is a regal female, her eyes
have an entrancing almond shape and natural smoky grey tint on the
eyelids. Her poise in any position is regal and shows a natural
assurance in herself. Her silvery white hair is swept straight back with
short jaggedly cut locks that spike sharply behind her. It is obviously
the work of a blade and not sheers. Nonetheless, the hair is styled in a
free spirit. Her skin is sun drenched and quite tan which compliment her
finer features; strong cheek bones, and slightly pointed ears. This
woman easily sets herself apart from other women alone, but the aura
surrounds you gives you the feeling that she is being embraced by the
shadows by death itself.

The cup is never full.

The shadow of death has become one of the three seats of power in the
refuge. The ancient of flames is hungry to put to use the power and
chaos that the shadow of death brings. Rightly so, the shadow of death
takes up this new power and status to further its goals for Death - to
sow chaos and destroy life. Already the shadow of death instills in the
new reavers the drive to murder, pillage, and destroy. It tells them to
make all men fear them, to make all men run from them. It demands of
them the destruction of the civilized world and to plunge it back into
chaos. To burn it all down and then the sentinels can have it when they
are done. Wardens are to be killed when opportunity strikes, for they
are weak. The only time not to kill is when they are to be used as
fodder to defend the refuge or go on the offensive.

The shadow of death well remembers the promise of more power from Death
for the price of five more souls slain. It has done that and ever so
many more. It speculates the power promised to be quite powerful from
the price it is paying in souls. The shadow of death prays to Death
often that they might unite again in the depths of shadows and receive
their power. More power, it wants ever more.

Chapter 7

The symbiotic relationship

Helfinu and the Shadow of Death that was imbued into Helfinu are growing
more and more as one being. They meld thoughts and action almost as one.
She scarcely is able to think of herself in terms of the singular and
speaks often as we or our. This bond has made them quite the
destroyer of the civilized world.

According to the will of Death, they have maintained their presence in
refuge and have sown chaos and destruction whenever able. Death has
been most pleased with their ability to find those that prevent and avoid
Death.

While there is a certain enjoyment in those that are able to murder well,
none are immune to the shadow of deaths touch and already two have died
thinking they were strong enough to gain standing in their guild
alongside her.

The rituals of death, that tallies and marks souls for Death, have become
a thing of note for some and revulsion for others. All that matters is
that they continue to please Death. And Death is quite pleased. Death
promised even more power should five more souls face the ritual.

Chapter 6

Reuniting with Ancients Wake of fire

A warrior with a nightmare blade falls before the shadow of death. In
the throes of its death rattle the familiar crackle of the Ancient of
Flames voice comes before Helfinu. The fire of the chastising conversation
rolled over Helfinu in waves of heat upon heat. Yet Helfinu remains
unscathed. Her actions spoke well of her and her devotion to the
Ancients of Thar-eris, even if her devotion is only through her desire to
fulfill the will of Death.

The final two comments set firmly in the Shadow of Deaths mind. First,
should she falter again her mortal form would be consumed in fire. This
was a warning, but to her it was a banner of her perseverance under
adverse circumstances, and not something that would ever happen again.
Second and highlighted as most importantly to Helfinu was that the
Ancient of Flames wished the Shadow of death to be a leader now.
Three burning words branded in the mind of Helfinu, Lead and Destroy.
Those words fulfilled the synergy and link between Deaths plans and the
Reavers path in Thar-eris. A great path to be walking on.

The Sunwarden was quick to spout off to Helfinu as she assended the tree
once more, but no surprisingly the Ancient of Flames silenced the
Goatmans bleatings. Helfinu grinned to herself, she had the backing of
the Ancients as long as she held true to the path which she would
until Death took her for the final time. She would leave an inferno in
the wake of her path.

Chapter 5

Expulsion Orcs enslave.

Helfinu, often called the Shadow of Death, faced expulsion at that hands
of the Nightreaver Azzael. He had gotten word from the Sunwarden about
the Shadow of Deaths working with orcs. The Sunwarden has been quick to
denounce Helfinu, alluding often that she was nothing more than a scion
spy. As if the Scions had need of a spy in a band of open anarchists.
Helfinu openly showed her utter disregard for him and his bleating mouth
by calling him, goatman. Nonetheless, Nightreaver Azzael removed both
Helfinu and the other Reaver, a ranger, from the Tree of Ancients.

It was barely a night after removal from the tree that the Nightreaver
Azzael came back to the shadow of death and asked her if she would return
to the Tree. It was clear to her that Azzael had a certain attachment to
the mind and body of the shadow of death. One might call it love or an
infatuation, either way, Death was intent on fulfilling its plan and
pushed its desire to rejoin with the Ancients of Fire and Chaos. Helifnu
acquiesced to the request of the Nightreaver and that night brought the
head of an orc and fire giant magistrate before the tree as proof of her
pledge to the outlands and promise to end whatever orcs life she could.

Now Deaths Shadow roams the lands bringing the embrace of Death to the
World while her own soul further wanes in the vast depths of Deaths
darkness. Few recognize her as a mortal with a soul anymore. She is
more vessel of Death than mortal.

Chapter 4

Empowered by Death The price.

The exhilaration, the rush, the power - when Deaths Dark Shadow fell
upon her it imbued her with power and strength unlike that of anything
she had ever imagined. Its strength was beyond her comprehension. With
its power came a glimpse into the will of Death and lure to bring chaos
on the mortal plane. Deaths dark shadow not only imbued her with power,
but it also visibly remained with her. It constantly surrounded her with
a black aura. Tendrils of Deaths power caressed her face and whispered
its will, and desire into her soul. . Initially when she joined the
Reavers she thought it would put her in the path of heroes who cheated
Death over and over, heroes that would meet Deaths embrace by her hand,
but it whispered its chaotic plans to upheave the world of Thera and
significantly increase the amount of living that would meet its embrace.
Death wants to destroy civilizations and send the masses out into the
wilderness in waves of pestilence and famine.

With each passing day Deaths dark hand both doles out power and
corrupts the semblance of the mortal being she was. That innocent girl
that was curious about the world and simply tried to stop unwanted
advances of a caretaker is now but a faint twinkle of a distance star in
a vast universe of darkness.

Chapter 3

Unshackled

No light could pierce the depth of darkness where Helfinu found herself,
but the voice gave light with its sound. In the crypt,each word spoken
to her crackled and sizzled. The Crackling Voice of Ancient Flames said
'What is that chain about your neck, Reaver?' Helfinu spun around,
instinctively reaching up to her neck as thoughts raced to her past and
being in prison. The Crackling Voice of Ancient Flames said 'That chain
through your hair? It is made of dark metal.' She grinned in defense
like a wild animal bares teeth. The Crackling Voice of Ancient Flames
continued 'Why does everyone know you to wear adamantite, unnatural
metal, when you are supposed to be a Reaver?'

Helfinu revealed then, the one anchor that held her from her freedom as
she whispered 'It is the tainted metal, but the burn of it reminds me of
where I came from, and the pain of which I bore.

The Crackling Voice of Ancient Flames replied, 'If you can handle the
burn of metal unnatural to Thar-Eris, perhaps you should be removed as a
Reaver from the Tree. Or, you can find something else to hold your
hair.'

She nodded wisely understanding what must be done. Helfinu grabbed her
luscious braid by the end and you could hear the sizzle of flesh burning
on her hand. She then took her nightmare blade and ran it up by her neck
and slices her braid at the base. You could smell the burnt hair from
the corrosive touch of the blade. Helfinu turns around in a slow circle
showing her braid in hand... still sizzling. Then along with her last
shackle from freedom she let the braid fall to the ground.

She responded quickly as to not letting the pain show, 'I do believe my
choice is made.

The Crackling Voice of Ancient Flames said 'Good. Consider that a
shackle you do not have upon you tying you to your past life. Sometimes
the pain is helpful, but being free is even more so.' After a moment of
silence, the Crackling Voice of Ancient Flames said 'We are pleased,
pleased that you understand the freedom you choose.'

Chapter 2

Not for the faint of heart 2

When her time was served, her release was not planned as a normal
prisoner would be. For fear of death, they used a knock out gas in the
cell. It filled most adjacent cells too. Into the cell they went - half
a dozen guards - ready to fight this witch of the shadows. When the cell
was fully illuminated they were not quite prepared for what they saw.

In the deepest recesses of the darkness she was found sitting with her
legs crossed, arms folded in her lap. She was calm and despite the blood
and dirt she was caked in appeared composed. The gas appeared to have no
effect. She stood calmly, and the guards (either frozen in fear of what
she might do or in awe of what they were still seeing) did not budge as
she walked out the cell and off into the world.

There behind where she had sat so composed was a small altar of bone, and
on that altar were five skulls from prisoners she killed, each skull had
hundreds of tick marks, marks that counted the progression of time.

Once in the light day she stood for a moment, head stretched back, arms
stretched out and felt the warmth of the sun. After that moment das
passed she saw herself cleaned in the river that runs below the docks.

In tattered rags she walked proudly into the guild of shamans and learned
how to strengthen her bond to her god - Death.

She believes that the one true god is Death. All must answer to it in the
end. All die, and none can cheat it. All "supposed gods" are just being
with power who only delay their embrace with death. Death will find
them, and take them. It will come for everyone.

She has no worldly goal but to serve her lord. She doesn't care about
law, anarchy, evil, good, or a semblance of balance. When able, she will
see that her lord receives that which is his. None have reason to be in
the world a second longer. Even she is of no exception. She will not
waste her time in the futility of mass murder for death will embrace them
easily enough.. Instead, she will focus the strength of her lord on
those that are healthy and well off, those that would stay alive for a
long time. Even the sentient undead will not escape death and will be
returned to their proper place.

Chapter 1

Not for the faint of heart.

Helfinu is the bastard child of a mother who died in childbirth. She grew
up in an orphanage where many gods were worshiped. Daily, children were
forced by the "sisters" to pray to the various gods; The Lady Jaguar
Baerinika, The Angel Corrlaan, The thirteen fingered Whiysdan, the just
Risdrin, the goddess of season Amaranthe, and many more. The children
would pray for a family, food, or for their parents that abandoned to
come reclaim them.

For all the prayers, starvation was a constant at the orphanage if one
didn't guard their plate or eat quickly they would be susceptible to it
being taken from them by older children. The sisters either turned a
blind eye to it or were simply too starving themselves to care.

She watched all of these children's prayers go unheeded and unanswered.
She prayed to none, because she saw it did no good. This became
strikingly aware to her with her "private sermons" with the father.
Pleas, begging, and prayer served no one in those private times, and if
it were not for the letter opener found on the father's desk in that last
"lesson" he may have continued his abuse, but now Death has him and will
bother her no longer. A lesson truly learned in both pain and blood.

Murdering a priest earned her five decades in the dark cells of Hamsah
Mutazz. The first decade was the worst. Many nights spent fighting off
the lowest forms of civilized life who wished to abuse her, death for
each of them that tried. She used sharpened bones from those that she
first killed to make shiv and mace for stabbing and cutting. Death
always ended her struggles so that she could rest.

Over the next decade she learned to hold herself to the shadows of her
cell so as to avoid being seen. The jailers had taken to calling her the
"Witch of the shadows", because of it. Whenever the cells would grow
over crowded they would put the worst criminals, the ones they didn't
want back in city in with her cell. True to her name she would stalk
them in the shadows, watching. As the jailer's torch light dimmed she
would strike, Like a wraith, tearing, biting, clawing. None survived
her.

The last decade was quite for her. No longer did anyone dare to even get
close to her cell alone. Always in pairs or more would they throw food
into the shadows of the cell. Perhaps it got to her, perhaps it didn't.
