Description

Stoic, swirling blue eyes set against pale white skin stare outwardly
from the beautiful face of this sirine giant. She seems to be of the
ancient race of Storms, though by comparison to her kinsman, it might
be said that she is a far cry from the typical giant.

Her head has been completely shaven, giving her a masculine visage. Her
palms, though rough from an evident life of hard labor, are well-manicured.
Straight-backed, she seems to carry herself with a disciplined nobility
which extends itself into every little thing she does, from the way she
keeps her hands politely by her side to the way she subtley makes eye
contact with everything around her, taking it in as if it were of the
utmost importance.

Several prominent battle scars mark her almost flawless features.

A Gift for the Cardinal

Ziruanja quickly stepped along the roads north of Galadon, heading for the Inn.
She was nervous with excitement. Something deep within her vibrated at the thought
of meeting the man she had sought for many decades - The Cardinal of Light, Illanthos.

He had told her before, he had little time. But it was enough just to see him face to
face, to bow before him and thank him for his lifetime of dedication to that which she
had sworn oath.

The giant, bald maiden reached the Inn and saw Illanthos sitting at the bar, resting
his weary eyes while he talked intently to a younger seeker of the Light.

'A good and thoughtful answer,' The Cardinal said to the young disciple, before looking
up and smiling heartily at Ziruanja's approach.

'Excuse me, Cardinal but I have sought to meet you for many years so I have come to bless
you and thank you,' Ziruanja spoke carefully, untying an emerald periapt from its strap on
her girdle and handing it to Illanthos. 'May the Fortress benefit from this small boon.'

Cardinal Illanthos nodded graciously, shaking her hand and tucking the periapt away safely.
'I shall see this finds someone who can use it well,' the Cardinal said. Ziruanja could see
that the man was weary from long hours of duty and needed to be left alone.

Smiling, Ziruanja bowed as graciously as she could and silently stepped away.

As she left, a grim smile still donned her face. She knew she was going to find the Light
and know it like few others could. It was her little secret, the love she felt.

Chapter 1

Letter to the Disciple

To the Faithful One,

I trust the Light blesses you. You should know that your bretheren miss your
presence dearly, though we pray vigorously each day for your well-being and
hope that we may never see you again until the day your tasks are completed.

Remember the failed state of mortality, the ancient wisdom of your race which
lends to its own frailty, its own awareness. It is a burden only we Storms,
and perhaps the Elves, can bear. What we do with this knowledge, how we live
with it, so shall we be judged, my disciple. For we have been given the gift
of compassion matched with a vision, of life coupled with death, of pure joy
which cannot be stifled by the most dour of circumstances. Our misery is our
crown of glory. Remember this.

I pray you reached the soup kitchen safely and had no trouble with your letter
of recommendation. Remember to be wary of your heart as you live among these
new 'brothers' of the Code. Many of them live by their hearts alone and thus
will be chafe unto the wind, spread across Thera like so many loose strands.
Yet you, Ziruanja Fajamithste, will not. You shall be a rock unto the side of
a mountain, unmoving as stone and heavy as the Scales of Justice.

Letter to the Disciple, Part Two

To the Faithful One,

I trust the Light blesses you. May it warm you to hear of our undying love and
heartfelt thanks as you continue your progress as envoy to the dry lands. Alas,
we endeavor to hear from you in more detail of your conversation with the lord
Marcatis!

How can it be that you, a humble priest, have gained an audience with one of
such great nobility and indeed, come under his tutelage? We shall pray for you
each day, that you will grow in wisdom and never forget your true calling.

Remember the greater good. Remember the source of justice. Remember that morality
and absolution may seek to go hand in hand, but must be kept apart for they two
separate things. Always hold onto your heart and your mind and remember to suffer
for your faith as we suffer for you.

You should know, dear one, that I miss your company. My mind becomes entangled
without you to help me unweave it.

Chapter 3

Prayer of Discernment

Over the past several years of Ziruanja's life, she has continued to walk steadfastly
in her faith to Marcatis' teachings, yearning to learn more of it and therefore be able
to share it. Each new revelation only seems to bolster her complete trust in the lord
who once appeared to her seemingly out of thin air.

Since then, she has been recruited to join the Blood Tribunal. It was clear to her early
on when she arrived to the 'dry lands' that morality was an issue which was being used
by men and women on both sides to drive chaos forward. How could there be peace if the
Empire saw their vision of dominance come to fruiton? How could humankind live with itself
if the Fortress had its way and every 'tarnished' soul was cut from the world?


Where was true justice in the laws of mankind to be found then? It was apparent to Ziruanja
that the Blood Tribunals were dedicated to the only law she could get behind. 'When you are
in our cities, you will respect our lives and our well-being. Other than that, you are free
to do as you please and we wish you to feel safe.'

As she strives each day in solemn duty to her lord Marcatis and to the Blood Tribunal,
Ziruanja recites this mantra in the quiet places to still her spirit.

The Principles of Dijan

These are the precepts by which the people of Dijan, my people, live in faith.

One: Do not be bound to your doctrine or ideology. The teachings of Dijan
are merely a guidepost. Do not mistake the knowledge you possess for absolute
truth. Be then prepared to gain wisdom throughout your life and adhere to the
law of your surroundings.

Two: All wisdom is to be shared with the utmost humility, never allowing
authority, power or greedy interests to be used to force others to adopt your
ideology. This includes the hungry and suffering, for they are the most susceptible
to those who would consider themselves betters.

Three: Live simply and share yourself with the world until the end of your days.

Four: Avoid discord in all your communication. Do not maintain anger or
hatred. Transform these seeds while they are still in your mind so that your
spirit may reap the benifit of greater fortitude and greater wisdom.

Five: Do not speak untruth for the mere sake of personal interest. Always
strive for nobility, being raised up in thought without increasing the self.

Six: Meditate daily on the world in which you live and how you may increase
it. Do not mistreat your body. Be mindful of it and practice the use of it in
ways that are uplifting to the body and mind.

Seven: He who seeks understanding will obtain guidance. One is not exlusive of
the other. To seek for understanding is to say the answer is there. To find
guidance is to say that understanding has been sought.

Chapter 5

Shadows and Chaos

A stronger, albeit a less compassionate Ziruanja, has emerged through the
shadows and chaos of battle. She has seen elf betray what is truly justice
and one particular anti-paladin has opened her eyes to the realities of
what are called 'righteousness' by the supposed moral few.

Kharanthes, whom she met long ago, a dark-hearted law man of integrity and
a seeker of wisdom. They have become more than friends, as brother and sister
and she has faced the scorn of her guild for it. Fiercely, she defends her
position in the Light, stating that it is the Light which lets her see other
spirits as they truly are. Good and evil are not to be set aside, but should
they be the measure by which justice is weighed? She gains no ground with her
guildmaster, who refuses to teach her anything so long as she continues the
course she is upon.

The Shield Maiden continues her duties faithfully, continuously battling with
the wildling outlanders who never cease their assault of the Spire. Hardened
by it and aware of this, she constantly seeks to restore her love and compassion
for others and apply her faith to the needs of the people. Her original edict
was that of an envoy of peace to the 'dry lands' and she remains steadfast.

The shield maiden from Dijan is resolved to live and die for the people around her.

Chapter 6

Light and Dark

Ziruanja continues to learn and become something which, she hopes, is
more noble, more worthy of her lord's boon. She has faith that he sees
all, therefore she is keenly aware there must be a reason that she has
not received word from him.

While still believing her judgment of the dark knight Kharanthes to be
correct, she has come to realize that her love for the man could and
likely would destroy the unity within the Spire. Worse yet, as she
considers the stain she may have placed on her lord Marcatis by her
actions, it grieves her to think of it. She wishes her devotion to
Marcatis and the Light to be without question and so she, in shared
wisdom with Kharanthes, has decided to abandon their friendship.

She has determined to never be again worthy of blame save by those
who are her sworn enemies. She has determined to repent to Marcatis
for her grievance against him, for her loss of honor in the Spire.

Letter From the Disciple

To the Wise Counselor,

May your days be blessed with the Light of life and your nights with
the eternal warmth which can only be found in empty stillness. I have
prayed ceaselessly for you and the rest of our brothers and sisters of
the Dijan.

I have added much wisdom to my heart, counselor. I heed the warnings
of my lord Marcatis and can no longer justify my own actions without
keeping them in constant check. My zeal for our cause must diminish
in order that it might be seen to fruition. Fervor must be replaced
with right discernment.

I must obey the precepts of the Light. I must adhere to the paladin's
code by which I have sworn my second oath. I must accept the judgment
of my lord Marcatis and learn to see his wisdom in that which surrounds
me. This is the only way by which I will accept my duties as envoy
to these dry lands. It is the only stream by which my spirit may flow.

With that said, I have discovered the first artifact we need. It lies
in the hands of a villain I should have no trouble overpowering, when
my duties allow me to depart the city. When I have it, I will inform
you to send another to retrieve it. There is a beast here on the dry
lands which is remarkably similar to the terror we have been dealing
with. It is called a Quaggoth. I intend to discover more...

Chapter 8

Transformation of Faith

It could be said that Ziruanja has persistently chased after her faith
while at the same reacting to a life of hardships. She is constantly
adding to her belief system the things that each new revelation has to
teach her. One thing does not change - her loyalty to the eternal Light.

She has outlived the shortened lives of two of her oldest friends, Shaleis
and Bromdor. The loss of Bromdor was a tragedy. For the first time in her
life, she had begun to feel loved sincerely and deeply, by a dwarf no less,
whose brief gaze alone could set her blood aflame with strength and a renewed
desire for vivacious life.

In her daily prayers, Ziruanja now vows to love only one in this way - Her
undying lord Marcatis. He has never abandoned her, never relinquished duty
for love and never lied to her. She realizes now that mortal men can only
be trusted in so far as their actions, not by the oaths they have taken.

For Ziruanja, an oath should not be easily broken. It is why she has made
every effort to be in constant awareness of the oaths she has taken to the
Light, her lord and the Spire. Treading the narrow streams may always be
more treacherous than the wide, flowing rivers but she has seen too many
mortal men drown when their arms can keep them afloat no longer.

When her strength fades, she cries out to lord Marcatis.
And he answers...

Inner Struggles

... The Justiciar exploded in the Spire again. Of course, he was
angry and I could see he had a right to be angry but the outburst
wasn't just toward wizard Ferendelln and his wreckless behavior, it
was toward the Provost and the Spire itself. I saluted and listened,
but it was hard to abide...

... I should never have been in that room anyways. I hadn't yet been
promoted to Provincial status, I didn't have the proper rank...

... After speaking with the Provost, I am at ease. I am glad such
things are left to my lord Marcatis' divine wisdom...

... found the Cardinal at the Inn one day. It was a glorious day,
even if he only had time for a brief meeting. I shall visit the Inn
more often...

Letter of Love

Divine Lord,

How great you are, to teach of a spark which is rare and pure.
To share the gift of stillness, without fear of time and death.
It has saved my life. Without your judgment, I may never have
gleaned the hope I now carry close to my heart.

Time, I have found to be a great teacher. My mistakes are likely
many as I have now lived over two and a half centuries but I take
a great deal of profound comfort with each new stride.

I can oft hear your voice speaking to me, whether through the
subtle words of my friend Xafre, the cracking and splitting
of a mountain as an avalanche rips it asunder or even in the
quiet of a picturesque morning atop the Spire balcony.

Your hand is clearly lain out over the Spire, over all of us.
It guides us if we will but look inward, so that we can grasp
the magnitude of the miracle of life itself. This life is about
the gleaning, not the reaping. I know that now and I know the
the difference between the two.

I am deeply regretful that I have not come to hear you speak more
often. I shall redouble my efforts. I wish to be a worthy disciple.
I will continue to live daily with judgment in the forefront of my
mind and strive to share this great hope you have given me with
those around me.

Provost: Debrief I

Commendations:

Trifnel - I continue to support the former Provost's request that
he be considered first for the office of Provincial Magistrate, once
you feel he's earned his marks in Galadon.

Disciplinary Actions:

Xafre - The Justiciar and I both have always been highly impressed with
his hard work and dedication. But after a quick rise to Galadon, one
I realize now may have come too soon, he made a blatant mistake. He struck at a
non-criminal on the high road, with several witnesses. Xafre has served
well, every day that I've seen him. But I remanded him back to Hamsah
Mu'Tazz until he learns to be more cautious. I see no reason he cannot
be given more responsibility when he does. I see a future Provincial in
him one day, or more.

Situational Report:

Our membership ledger is pretty weak right now. It's being held together
by a handful of committed Magistrates but the fact is, we're not getting
enough pledges. We are having a major problem in our turnover. I've been
giving out hiring and promotion bonuses to supplement our meager pay for
a long time now, but it seems more needs to be done to keep those we hire
working for us. Provincial Magistrate Perr and I will redouble our efforts
to improve morale in the Spire and I will be... examining any destructive
elements I can find and dealing with them appropriately.

The Justiciar and Vindicator networks are quite reliable and have served
me greatly already. In my time on patrol, a particularly insistent rogue
named Serpius began scouting criminals for me. His skilled reports led,
in part, to the deaths of two criminals and nearly a few others as well.
However, I do believe he blackmailed me for the safety of one of our
pledges at the time, Ssindra. I pleaded for her safety on the road when
he mentioned stealing from her. At the time, it seemed like the right
thing to do, to protect my Magistrates and since then, our dealing has
seemed to benefit the Spire. He seems to live on the highways and enjoys
reporting the whereabouts of criminals but keep an eye on his dealings.

I plan to use whatever means necessary to strengthen the Spire, so long
as they are not nefarious or underhanded. The Blood Tribunal cannot afford
a scandal.

On my next debriefing, I hope to report a strong ledger and a strong record
of resolved criminal issues.

Letters to Marcatis - Judgment

My lord Marcatis,

I recall the first day you found me outside your chamber. I was
young and brash, proud of myself for a successful journey to the
dry lands and eager to berate my newfound guild for allegedly being
misguided. I think I had a litany for you. Yet you waited quietly
and when you finally spoke, you asked a single question which carried
itself to the front of my mind, "What is the source of good Judgment?"

The next time we spoke, I had little room left for pride. I had excelled
in my career as a Magistrate, yet in every other aspect of my life
I was lacking and I knew it. You could have disowned me then. But
instead, you waited and watched... and sent me to find my own counsel.

In every step along the way, you have taught me how to learn. How to
be awake to my surroundings. How to see that which is reflected beyond
this mortal form of mine.

When I speak of my faith in Marcatis, I teach the ideals of judgment
through a symbolism which I believe all the people can understand.
Truthfully, many of the virtues of judgment are similar to those
taught in my own guild. Patience, Temperance and Wisdom. I declare
to my enemies that none of us can escape death and beyond that,
we shall all be judged for our actions.

Yet it is not enough that I know how to preach a message. I seek to
learn how to teach without teaching. I wish to provoke a great deal
of hope within the Spire before I meet you at the Final Judgment.
I intend to greet you with a warm smile, then gaze into the mirror
and be judged one final time.

... I now realize I will never fully understand this spark of mine
but that with each passing day I have come a little bit closer.

Letters to Marcatis - Death and Spirit

My Lord Marcatis,

There is no greater hope than that which springs forth from the
the spirit. There dwells within some very special creatures this
natural, orderly being which sees its own reflection many times
throughout the process of life. One is born. One gives birth to
new ideals, new life. One dies. What is written in the history
of the Ages are tales of such spirits making a host of choices.

It is in the act itself, of living and dying, which a miracle is
to be found. The mortal spirit is impoverished in these dry lands.
Life is twisted away from righteous hands. Yet still, there is and
will always be hope so long as the spirit remains strong in enough
right-thinking men and women. Should I pray for anything but that
this radiant light continues to grow within all of us. This self-
awareness.

It has taken me many defeats and many hard years to come to understand
the real simplicity of what I have to learn. I have always been looking
for a key to a lock that did not exist. Rather, the door itself is a
mirror that one must step into spiritually.

There is no holy place one must go. There is nothing to block one's
path. There is only self-reflection. Only choice. And in the end,
finality. There must be finality in everything. The cup of tea, the
the day, even a lifetime.

I place my hope in the spirit of the young. I cry out for them to
stand up, steadfast and vigilant, without fear of death.

I never thought I would have children. It seems I was wrong. In this
life, I have been a mother to many.

The Blood Tarrdara, Part One

This is the official record of one Ziruanja Fajamithste, Provost Magistrate
to the Spire, Knight-Priestess of Lord Marcatis, Who is Adjudicator over Life
and Death.

Let us give thanks for all which has come before and was handed down through
generations and for the mysteries which lie ahead. This is the gift of the
spark of life, the fruit by which all of us are blessed, as well as judged.

My testimony is not one of the physical events of my life but of increased
understanding as I have had each experience. In my youth, I became fearless
and hopeful. I learned to accept death as a part of life. Out of this, I
began to discard my sense of entitlement. Humility, as well as a wondrous
sense of dignity, overcame my spirit. I was in awe of the simplest things
which seemed to unravel the greatest mysteries before my very eyes.

There is much required for right judgment - and you will not always be
right. Yet without the mistakes of our inherent nature, how would we
simple mortals know good fruit from bad? It is in quiet reflection where
the truth is revealed about oneself. It is in the methods used to act
upon those truths wherein judgment is first born. You are defined by
how you act upon what you observe. Your interpretation of your own life
is made known to others in the wake of each stride taken.

Those of like minds and purpose gather together. The nation, the cabal,
the family, the royalty and even the brigands. Is the very sand itself
not found lying together? Does the rain fall in single drops across Thera
or as one living and dying host? And if the sand is crushed by a rock,
it will be ground away. And if the water falls into the crushed sand,
it will be a vessel for new life. I am speaking of the very essence
of the natural laws by which we all must abide. All of us should leave
this world a better place.

The desire for such cannot be truly expressed in words, as has been proven
in the false promises of the Imperial Codex. The results are centuries of
historical proof that poor judgment begets corruption and corruption begets
great wealth for a few and great poverty for the many... *to be continued*
