Description

The felar stands tall for his race, his brown fur mottled with dashes
of grey. Golden eyes stare haughtily out, carrying an air of
superiority. He is martially arranged, carrying a wide assortment
of sharp blades and other weapons. Strangely enough, a satchel at his
side seems to overful with scrolls, parchments, and other materials
of higher learning. His clothing, is a gaudy and poorly made
immitation of finer garb. His foreclaws, stained yellow and caked
with dirt, tightly grasp a longspear whose point shows signs of
recent use, and a grim smile crosses his face.

I found myself in the village, and grew strong, yet for many years now I have
avoided what I knew I had to do. To return to the place of my birth, and face,
for the last time, my birthparents, my original pack. Was it cowardice, kept
me away for so long?

Twenty years had passed, since the last time I walked those streets, yet the way
was all to familiar. Through the curtain that passed as a door, yet the house
of my kin was eerily quiet. Onward, then, I went to the back. Their scent was
still strong, but older, less vibrant. In their room, on the bed, I found them both
Half-alive, ridden with disease, sores covered my mother's eyes--she was blind
My father little better, although he turned his gaze upon hearing me enter. The old
felar smirked, "Frijer, our idiot son returned to shame us on our deathbeds,
reminding me of my greatest failure."

I had hesitated a moment on entering, seeing them both so weak and frail. But
his words, new, but old at the same time, reawakened my resolve. The spear in
my hand rose up, and then flashed out twice. Blood seeped into the blankets and
it was done. Two more mages who would trouble the world no more. And their son,
freed from their scorn.

Chapter 1

Background

Family, the pack, is at the core of our being as felar, so what, then
is a felar, disowned by family and cast from the pack? This is the
question I must answer, having failed my parents since birth.

I was born to shapeshifters, rare, sure, for my people, but they
were two of the best magi the felar have seen, magic changing their
claws into even fiercer weapons of destruction. It seemed
preordained, then, that I, their proginy would follow their paths.

And so I started schooling in the guild of shapechangers, but study
and try as I might, the art of magic escaped me. I could take no
form but my own. My father called my stupid, and, in the form of
a grizzly bear, beat me nearly weekly, as if that would teach me
his arcane arts. My mother was disappointed, too, but treated me
instead with a great pity, as if I were an incompetent invalid.

When I neared my twelfth birthday, my coming of age, an ultimatum
was issued to me my my parents, the two of them deathly solemn. If,
by my birthday, I had not mastered some of their magic, then I was
to be no son of theirs. The day approached, but I had ceased going
to my classes at the guild. Was I stupid, incompetent, unworthy of
the pack?

I left my village the morning of my birthday, and sought another life.
My parents, they equated magic with intelligence, and intelligence with
strength. But they are fools, as are the magi like them. In time, I have
found a new village, and a new pack, where the packleader Crraya has
shown me great kindness.
