Oryntohr Stormrider the Tempest-Marked Hunter, First Mate of the Thundering Maiden and Harbinger of Thar-Eris

The emerald-eyed cloud giant Oryntohr is here, a seaflower tucked behind his ear.

Description

Before you stands a hulking beast of a man, even by giant standards. He
stands nearly fifteen feet tall and looks as if he must weigh as much as a
troll. Draped and wrapped all about this huge man are various furs and
natural fibers with thorns poking through them, but you see very little
worked metal in this man's belongings. Long dirtied hair flows from under a
dirtied helm, although you can see a patch of pristine white hair close to
his scalp. His face and what little of his skin is exposed looks as if it is
cut from rough alabaster, it seems as if it is purposefully kept hidden. His
long, unkempt hair frames a seemingly aloof face with a hard set chin and a
friendly smile. Between the smile and his light humming, at first you take
this man for a lay-about, until you see his deep emerald eyes flaring with an
intensity that is vaguely disconcerting. You also notice a many-petaled
scarlet seaflower, its vibrant emerald stem tucked safely behind Oryntohr's
right ear. It seems to glow faintly with a holy radiance.

Chapter 13

Come wash the nighttime clean, come grow the scorched ground green. Blow the horn, tap the tambourine. Close the gap on the dark years in between.
Added Fri Aug 10 06:36:17 2012 at level 51:

You say 'But that brings Oryn back ter Tree. This blight, is better than was,
but still persists.'
Neltouda nods at you in agreement.
You say 'Oryn nuh knows about first ritual, root cause.'
You say 'But since then, seems blood has made worse an' better.'
You say 'Also seems, whoever is tasked with blight is drawn down by.'
Neltouda says 'Aye?'
You say 'Aye. For while, was just blighted patch.'
You say 'Then Ancients gave Grafacut a chance ter cleanse it, by layin'
Nariss' corpse on the ground and spillin' his blood upon the blight.'
Oryntohr gazes out over the ocean, his face tightening.
You say 'But Graf fell instead, and the blight strengthened.'
You say 'Nightwalkers would stream from hole.'
Neltouda says 'Right shame.'
You say 'Oryn is nuh sure can fight that sort dark magic with more violence,
but is no true mystic.'
You say 'Was partially cleansed, though, by Tanion.'
Neltouda says 'Paladin cleaned the land eh?'
You nod.
You say 'With hims own blood.'
You say 'This was Sindr's task. Found him disfavor with Jaguar, though.'
You say 'And dragged hims spirit down.'
You say 'As did Graf's failure.'
Neltouda drinks stout from a silver mug brimming with dark stout.
You say 'Taint goes deeper than just flesh. Is taints spirit.'
You say 'Seems, anyway.'
You say 'But now, is Oryn's task. None has told, but is. Knows is.'
You drink stout from an oak cask filled with frothy dark stout.
The stout quenches your thirst.
Neltouda says 'Seems yer would be knowin' much 'bout taintin' a spirit like.'
It starts to rain.
Neltouda says 'What it be feelin' like ter change.'
Neltouda says 'Seems the spirit o' the land bein' 'bout the same.'
Oryntohr nods at you with a deadly serious look.
You say 'Is what Oryn thought. Yer cleansin' magic flows through Oryn's
blood.'
---
You say moodily 'That brings Oryn back ter where was when left.. '
You say 'Will ponder cleansing ritual.'
Neltouda nods at you in agreement.
You say 'But thinks will need bigger sacrifices fer such a heavy task.'
Neltouda says 'Seems meh own power ter cleanse nay bein' somethin' yer can
just wield.'
You nod at Neltouda.

Chapter 12

Oryn has found treasure bein' worth more than any vault could hold.
Added Thu Feb 9 14:48:16 2012 at level 51:

"Yaaaaar!" Oryntohr bellowed ecstatically from the Thundering Maiden, his
deep voice cascading down to meet the briny sea like an avalanche of sound
and spirit. "Yo ho ho and booze by the crate, Maiden be havin' a new First
Mate!" He and Grutiv laughed as a handful of gulls took to wing rather than
face the brunt of the shouting. Taking a long pull on his ale, Oryntohr
turned back to Grutiv, saying "Oryn can nuh be tellin' Grut how good feels
ter sense life 'round us 'gain, an' be able ter call down bolts from sky. Was
much dark storm Oryn been wanderin' in, but was always knowin' Captain would
see Oryn through if hims kept walkin' up rough path." Grutiv nodded sagely,
adding "If'n yer cant see no stars, just hold yer bearing best yer can and
keep moving on."

"Yar, is wise words," said Oryntohr as he refilled his mug with Neltouda's
delicious stout. "An' speakin' 'bout wisdom, there bein' plenty young
stowaways an' deckhands 'round here nows that could use some teachin'. If
thems can find place in storm, will have much strong Crew, and Oryn be
wantin' ter guide thems spirits best can. If Crew bein' strong 'nuff, can
show greatness to all world, inspire some thems be great, too." Before
Oryntohr continued, he glanced around conspiratorially and in slightly
lowered tones said, "Oryn still does nuh know why Crew needs code-slaves like
Arngrum or wind-slavers like Sarin, but figures Captain be havin' her
reasons. 'Least Oryn nuh has put up with singing cow, anymore. Hims bein'
worst damned singer ever heard, Oryn be swearin' ter Neltouda's own dirty
ears, hims thick tongue ... " The two giants laughed and drank and talked till
the first signs of the morning began to peek over the eastern horizon,
setting the waves ablaze with vibrant colors.

As Oryntohr drunkenly stumbled back towards the Tree to sleep off the quickly
approaching thunderhead of a hangover that was brewing, the rising sun's
radiance brought him to an epiphany. For too long the Refuge had been
shrouded in the darkness of Thar-Eris. There had been no Sunwarden for many
years, and consequently too few goodly spirits had branches growing in the
Tree. There was no longer a true balance within the band of rebels, and this
was a problem. "Tree can nuh be growin' ter full height if is always in
shade," Oryntohr said aloud to himself. Taking a last look at the morning sun
cresting above the waves, the new First Mate resumed his trek northward,
determined to bring new light to his Tree and restore the necessary balance.
"If Captain can bring Oryn from heart of dark storm, Oryn can be doin' same
for Tree."

Chapter 11

Even this evil is productive of good.
Added Sun Jan 15 15:33:00 2012 at level 51:

Oryntohr awoke from a dark, tempestuous dream and was left with only the
horrible multi-headed cackling of the Queen Mother of the dragons in his
swimming head. Without even opening his eyes he knew that something deep
within was ... different. He could still feel the life energy around him,
ebbing and flowing through the air, but he could no longer touch it. What had
Tiamat wrought upon him?

As he gathered his things, trying to make sense of his strange forebodings, a
trusted blade threw itself from Oryntohr's hand in a startling act of
defiance. As he stared down at the blade, gleaming white in the dusky
sunlight, the realization washed over him: his very spirit had been pulled
into the darkness by the bracelet of the Five Faces- he was now evil!

As Oryntohr finished sacrificing the bracelet to the Ancients and scattering
its ashes to the winds, he hastily grabbed what tools he could still put to
use and began to trek determinedly to the Thundering Maiden. He was naturally
disconcerted by this turn of events, but he would not whimper and hide from
fate, for he knew that the true treasures of Thar-Eris are found beyond the
well-trodden paths and the charted seas. Although uncertain of what lay
beyond the horizon, his spirit would ride this dark storm wherever it was to
lead, just as he always had.

The strongest storms leave the clearest morns.

Chapter 1

A cold gust blows down from the northern mountains.
Added Sun Oct 31 17:17:13 2010 at level 10:

Oryntohr was born to a wild family deep in the mountains north of Udgaard. As
a child his parents taught him to hunt and trap, and how to use the thin
trees and the mountains themselves to shield himself from the blistering
frigid fury of the northern winter storms. They lived in relative peace with
their surroundings, finding a balance between the danger and shelter of the
unforgiving alpine territory, and Oryntohr was happy.

However, things began to change as Oryntohr grew older. First,
paladins fled into the woods to escape the blasted Loke in the south.
Oryntohrs people watched them from the trees and did nothing. This was their
downfall. Inevitably, men came from the city. After hunters and trappers,
came soldiers. Then engineers. The word itself made Oryntohr fume. Naturally,
this encroachment began to take its toll on the environment, and food became
scarce for Oryntohrs clan.

Oryntohr saw these things occurring and felt a swelling storm of emotions in
his young heart. Having recently come of age, he decided that he would set
off on his own and try to find the strength to free his mountains from the
intruding blight of civilization. He packed his few belongings and said his
goodbyes to his tribe, then set off southward down the still frozen river in
order to avoid the Loke. Not knowing what adventures lay before him, Oryntohr
nonetheless tracked southward, following an instinctive draw as primal as a
bears urge to hibernate in the cold depths of winter.

Deep rumblings of an inner storm.
Added Tue Nov 30 14:16:04 2010 at level 17:

Oryntohr is mostly ignorant of the world and its trappings. He was always
curious as a child, but since leaving his mountain home he has become
fascinated by a world he never knew existed. What was a breeze is growing
stronger, gathering into a gale force. This delight is tempered, though, by
his disdain for the things he considers "unnatural".

Oryntohr is also a very big music fan, he likes both listening to and making
music. Although his compositions are often little more than the idle musings
of a young giant, Oryntohr can often be found entertaining himself by making
simple music, whether it be singing simple songs, rapping sticks together, or
simply listening to the natural music of a distantly approaching storm.

Oryntohr is especially enraged by the expansion of civilization into the
wild. He would be content, at least for the time being, to let cities be
cities if they would quit growing into wild areas. He has found himself
delighted by some of the things he had found in the civilized world, but
Oryntohr blames a lot of the problems facing his homeland on the paladins who
fled there, and thinks his people should have done more to prevent the
Knights' entrance into the mountains.

The cut of Captain Mote's jib (Part I)
Added Tue Nov 30 14:28:18 2010 at level 18:

Traveling south down the frozen river away from the only homeland he had ever
known, Oryntohr felt strangely calm, like a windless morning from his
childhood. And although he knew this calm was only the prelude to a fierce
afternoon blizzard still to come, this didnt bother Oryntohr any. Mountain
gusts and gales never had.

As Oryntohr walked along the frozen river, he came across the most astounding
sight. Locked smack in the middle of the river, frozen in by slowly
thickening ice on all sides, was an old, beaten-up barge. Having heard about
boats in childhood stories, Oryntohr carefully made his way towards the craft
to investigate. Keeping to the drifts on the riverbanks, he knew he could
approach undetected, and before long he began to smell the familiar smell of
a cookfire, as well as something altogether unfamiliar, but piquant. As he
crept closer, he could also hear a course, thick voice singing a makeshift
song. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, Ill freeze my tackle off fore Im
done. Although Oryntohr didnt understand all the words, he knew from the
simple melody carried across the wind that this man was no threat to him. So
he stood up.

After taking the harpoon away from the strange looking human on the boat and
explaining that he was no foe, the man began to calm down and introduced
himself as Captain Mote. Well, that and a few long pulls from a weathered
canteen that most definitely did not hold water. Because the small cookfire
didnt seem to be keeping Mote warm enough, Oryntohr showed him a small cave
in the foot of a mountain he had passed not long before coming across the
barge. The cave would protect Mote in the coming time until the spring thaw
freed his boat.

Oryntohr stayed with his new friend for over a week, as he had travelled from
end to end of the world and had countless stories of exotic locales and
daring escapes. Apparently the man lived on boats and in ports, and was a
raider of sorts, picking off ships that strayed from their fleets, or were
brave enough to travel alone, but too slow to outrun their pursuers. Oryntohr
saw this in much the same way he viewed his elders hunts at the tainted
mount, Calandaryl. It was indeed much wiser to fight the skeletons one at a
time. According to Captain Mote, he was a "pirate."

The cut of Captain Mote's jib (Part II)
Added Sat Dec 4 19:02:39 2010 at level 21:

In his time with Mote, Oryntohr learned many things. While much of the talk
was littered with afts and jibs and other indecipherables, he felt a
strong bond to the crazy old man who had made a life of weathering the seas
and the storms to chase his treasure. Even a young, simple mind like
Oryntohr's could sense the similarities between a lone human who would sail a
barge northward into a frozen winter in search of treasure and himself, who
was moving in the opposite direction but into equally harsh conditions in
search of a way to save his land. When Oryntohr left the small camp he and
Mote had made, he was inspired by the knowledge that there were also others
in the world who would strike out boldly and bear whatever storms may come in
fervent search of a prize. This band of souls was a crew, Mote had told him,
led by a great Captain of the Skies who was called Neltouda by the men of
this world, and She would be able to help him save his home...

Chapter 5

The Storm breaks, and Oryntohr emerges anew.
Added Wed Mar 2 21:18:05 2011 at level 35:

The great day had come! Oryntohr had finally been welcomed into Captain
Neltoudas crew, and he was already better for it. Neltouda had immediately
seen to Oryntohrs core, and realized it was fogged by his battle-lust. He
needed to broaden his life, she had told him, and focus on more than
fighting. Seeing the wisdom in her words, Oryn took a trip back to his frigid
homeland to reflect.

Going home was exactly was Oryntohr had needed to remind him what he had left
to protect. While he was there he hunted mighty stag with his clan-brothers,
built bonfires at night so large as to be nearly blasphemous, and danced and
drank around the fireside deep into the nights. This relative peace and
harmony was a much needed calm after a years-long storm of battle against
civilizations encroachment. On the night before he was to return to the
Tree, he held a clan meeting and rallied the elders and the warriors both to
the potential of coming wars with the defilers, but left them with the charge
to live their lives to the most until that day. As Oryntohr left early that
morning, the celebration was still going strong.

While Oryntohr was meditating outside of his village one frosty morning, he
had a startling realization. His homelands problems had gotten much worse
with the building of roads into the heart of those wild lands. Oryntohr now
realizes that roads are a major method of extending civilization. However, by
letting people into the heart of the wild without having to actually traverse
the wild conditions, be they thorny woods, jagged peaks, or rough seas, roads
allow the weak to get beyond where they deserve to be. The hidden wilds are
treasures to be earned and taken, not to be handed on a silver platter. This
is what allowed the frail, codeslave paladins to enter his wood, and the
destructive loke-people that followed them, as well. They were not like
Oryntohrs people, who had to watch every step in the forest, or sailors, who
always had to keep a steady course and actively navigate against the forces
of the storms and the oceans to reach their goals, or risk never reaching
port.

While Oryntohr was leaving his homeland, he saw how the freezing rain had
damaged the roads. Oryntohr had the idea that if he could make a big enough
blizzard near the Tree, he may be able to ruin that damned road that cut
through the Prosemy like a festering scar. He might not be able to make such
a big storm on his own, but Neltouda could teach him a way, he knew. And if
he could learn a way to do it once, maybe he could make a storm big enough in
his homeland to push all the outsiders out, and restore the peace and balance
there once was. These dreams were just mist before a storm, but sometimes the
winds blow just right...

A Day in the Life of a Pirate of the Wild (Part I)
Added Sun May 8 21:13:44 2011 at level 41:

Oryntohr hummed tersely as his big, sticky fingers fumbled with the muddy
rope. He hated how hot and humid the jungle could get, and longed even for
the turgid swamps to the north as sweat fell from his furrowed facial
features. The anguished cries of one of the slaves of MalTrakis fell eerily
silent and hung forebodingly in the air, not even the slightest breeze to
blow it away. Oryntohr resumed his humming in the hopes that the haughty
sailing tune would insulate him from the foulness of this dark jungle.
Finishing his work, he gathered his things and made his way down the hill a
bit to the south to wait in the oppressive heat.

Oryntohr smeared a little extra mud on the glowing stormcloud on his inner
arm (it often seemed to give him away when he was trying to hide) and sat
down against a crook in the base of a gnarled old cypress tree. Even though
the Captains mark gave him away now and again, he wouldnt trade it for
anything in Thar-Eris. He was a blessing and nothing less, and Oryntohr was
trying to live up to the Captains charge to be less reclusive. To that end,
he had been preaching when he had the opportunity, and hunting defilers when
he did not. He longed to show the masses huddled in the cities the way to a
fuller life, as a sort of pathfinder for the spirit, but he did not mind if
those who could not be saved avoided the wilder parts of the world some
little bit out of fear. Those who could not answer the song of the Return
were bound to be feed those who could, in the end.

As a full-fledged member of Neltoudas crew, Oryntohr also took it upon
himself to test those Deckhands and Stowaways that he met as he could, to
make his own mind on them. In doing this, he had come across, accosted
really, a young paladin called Dakeah that carried the Captains blessing.
Oryntohr was less than pleased at the notion of sharing a bunk with a
codeslave, but he kept himself from striking the blue giant and spoke
instead. Dakeah held his moral ground well enough to make a good impression
on Oryntohr, but as Oryntohr silently sipped on a mug of the Captains
special brew and wiped the sweat from his face with a fresh palm frond he
ruminated on how constrained and naive the paladins perspective on the Storm
had seemed. Lightning cannot be predicted, Ornytohr chuckled lightly to
himself, and Dakeah was limiting himself in profound ways, making himself
like a box of rain, a storm seen through a poorly made, dirtied porthole
window.

A Day in the Life of a Pirate of the Wild (Part II)
Added Sun May 8 21:14:21 2011 at level 41:

As he sat there sipping brew and sweating, Oryntohr began to hear the
tell-tale signs of approaching traffic. He balanced his mug with ease on a
tree branch and took his position, crouched behind an ancient, fanned-out
cypress. He inhaled deeply as he waited, muscled tensed like thunder waiting
to crash, although the lack of a breeze meant he smelled little but wet air.
As the party crossed in front of Oryntohr, he leaped from the trees with a
fierce warcry and fell upon the unsuspecting knight Vythia, his crudely made
iron blade burning her flesh even more than it did his own. She threw herself
out from one of his savage charges and managed to get away, but fled directly
into the snare Oryntohr had tied earlier. Thalena, Kolsad, and Jehb watched
helplessly as he swiftly finished his prey. Jehb was an old friend, the only
thief Oryntohr was on good terms with. Thalena, as it happened, was another
trying to work her way up the ranks of the Captains crew. Oryntohr hated to
meet her this way, but such things were sometimes unavoidable. Kolsad, it
seemed, took Vythias death more harshly than she herself did, and may hold a
grudge. Oryntohr did not seek to make enemies of non-defilers, but like a
great storm, he will cut his swath wherever the winds blow him, and leave in
the aftermath of the crumbled civilizations a chance for better things to
grow.

No man is Oryn's King, by Neltouda's stormy eyes!
Added Mon Jun 6 23:01:35 2011 at level 51:

Very shortly after reaching the pinnacle of his guild, Oryntohr set out
homeward. He meant to speak his piece to Gorindos, the supposedly great King
of the Cloud Giants, once and for all. More than once, Oryntohr had tried to
rouse a band of warriors to push the intruders, those code-blinded paladins
and the foul people from the Loke who had come in after them, out of their
home. Each time, though, Gorindos had refused to support the counter-raids.
Oryntohr did not know why, but enough was enough. He wasn't impressed by a
measly crown, and he would be ignored no more by his own people.

Gorindos was none too pleased at what Oryntohr had to say to him, that much
was certainly clear. They argued back and forth in the loud, aggressive
fashion of giants for quite some time, but when King Gorindos tried to assert
his position as Oryntohr's sovereign, the conversation went bad as quickly as
any blizzard had even blown onto that mountain. At being ordered to kneel and
swear oaths of binding, with the silence in Great Hall deafening, Oryntohr
laughed defiantly into his Kings face and declared proudly that "No man was
his King, by Neltouda's stormy eyes!"

By the time Oryntohr's words had rung through the Great Hall, Gorindos had
his vicious flamberge in hand and was upon the younger giant. Oryntohr first
retreated through the mountains, leading the bodyguards in a fruitless chase
that only lost them while he doubled back to the Hall. There, he met the
mighty Gorindos in combat, battling and falling back to his hidden retreats
over and over. For days the battle raged on, soaking the Hall and the
surrounding snowbanks both deeply with red blood, shining bright in the
sunlight and dark in the moonlight, but always shining with life. Finally, as
the sun rose on the eighth day, the battle came to a weary end. Oryntohr,
infused with the power of his Captain Neltouda, had withstood the fury of his
former liege and had triumphed! He had shown his kin that freedom was
attainable!

Chapter 9

A gale slowed to a breeze?
Added Tue Dec 13 09:27:42 2011 at level 51:

After decades of relative quiet on the decks of the Thundering Maiden,
Captain Neltouda had finally returned from her raid on whatever mysterious
plane she had been on, stocked with new treasure, Oryntohr was sure! During
her absence, Oryntohr had continued on trying to "pluck as many strings" as
he could, and help those who would listen to find the freedom to follow their
own spirits. As a result of all his proselytizing Oryntohr has begun to speak
the common tongue somewhat better than in his youth, although he has also
come to talk sort of like a pirate. He thinks some people may think him
foolish for this, but still cares little about other's opinions of him,
regardless of whether or not he may preach to them.

When he last saw Neltouda, Oryntohr told her that he was going to carve a
statue of Balta to honor the man that had influenced him so much in his
youth. As an added treat, the Captain said that she would try to convince the
Sultan to place it in the Hall he was constructing as a means to solicit
donations to his coffers. Oryntohr would not be donating, though, no! His
work would stand as a testament against the money responsible for the foul
Sultan's power and status, an example that true beauty in spirit is found by
braving the wild and weathering what adversity comes, not by cowering behind
walls and guards.

Oryntohr worked fervently on the statue for the better part of a year,
seeking out lost treasures in the wilderness and braving trials to gather
what was needed. When the statue was completed, he left it on the deck of the
Maiden for Neltouda, and now waits to know the effect of his work of art.

Oryntohr sometimes worries that he's getting soft and slow, spending most of
his time in the warm-lands. Hes warred against the island and the village,
and done his best to promote peace between the non-defilers, to some effect.
Mirroring his own spirit, the Tree, seems to be in a waning phase, only added
to by the mysterious loss of both the Harbinger and Nightreaver. Oryntohr had
hated Obregon, but his storm did not seem to ever break, and thus he was
consistently a strong influence in the lands. Oryntohr's spirit, though, is
calm and tranquil, but he knows that the end of one storm is always the
beginning of another

Chapter 10

You return to the Thundering Maiden to find a large wooden statue on the quarterdeck, facing out across the rolling seas as if delighting in the dance of the water and the air, its face intermittently lit by flashes of lighting.
Added Tue Dec 13 09:31:49 2011 at level 51:

A large wooden giant is here, obscured by a prismatic haze.

You look more intently at the large wooden statue and what you see is an
incredibly detailed, life-sized wooden relief of a giant man who seems
vaguely familiar, but whom you cannot clearly recall. The figure is just over
ten feet tall and seems to be made of a light wood from the far north-
whitebark pine, or maybe snow gum. Set squarely in the center of the broad
face is a large, rounded nose. The nostrils are flared open as if he is
sniffing the wind, and below it his thick lips are spread widely showing an
open, toothy mouth. It is impossible to tell whether this man is posed in the
midst of a fierce warcry or is, instead, laughing uproariously.Above the
nose two huge, deep set black diamonds, placed as eyes, gaze outward. Known
to some as "Mermaid Gems," the aphotic stones do not appear to have been cut,
but rather naturally formed in the perfect shape, with no call for chipping
or chiseling. These diamond eyes drink in the light of the room and it
sparkles in their very center, giving them a look full of hidden wisdom. As
your own eyes move further up the wooden, yet lifelike, face you come to
realize that the long, silvery ponytail draped down the white giant's back is
not, as it first appeared, crystalline. Rather, it seems to be composed
wholly of ice! A thin, solid sheet covers the head and cascades down to the
small of the back, somehow twisting into a shimmering ponytail. Countless
tiny rivulets course down the flow that appears to be hundreds of individual
hairs all bound together with a simple, minotaur-hide loop. The hair acts as
a powerful natural prism, breaking light apart and creating an odd rainbow
corona around the statue. Carved on the broad back, as if emblazoned on the
robe, is a crudely drawn but finely carved replication of the gaping maw that
had been tattooed upon Balta's flesh. Also deeply etched into the front of
the base in large letters are the words "What if Balta say, youse be that
Storm?" and a large storm cloud surrounding much fainter, smaller letters
that read "For Captain Neltouda Oryntohr."
