Kelnith Na-Rah the Legend of the Battlefield

Description

Topping eleven feet in height this hulking brute would go almost unseen
at night, his complexion so dark as to be almost the true absence of color.
Because of that, his shock of deep orange hair contrasts vividly, and his
red-on-white eyes seem to just appear out of nowhere a few inches beneath
with a seeming glow of their own. Once you've focused on him though his
outline defines, and you begin to detect specific features beyond the basic
darkness. A scar, running from the corner of one eye to the middle of the
cheek. Half of the lobe of one ear gone, a jagged line showing where once
it had been. Weapons, mostly blades, rarely sheathed but instead out and
immediately dangerous. Heavy clothes, some armor, some hides, a chaotic mix
only a crazed haberdasher might dream up in a drug induced nightmare. Even so
they combine to give the appearance of violence and dark strength on the edge
of explosion. More than that is difficult to tell, leaving you to see that

On Current Leadership
Added Tue Dec 18 10:03:34 2012 at level 51:

But speaking of Cainargen, he is a good choice in Kelnith's eyes. Kelnith has had
great respect for him since he first built his hut, and that remains, and is
even stronger after the two of them had a minor horn locking that could have led
to the circle but did not. Arratok as drillmaster is also fine in his eyes,
perhaps Kelnith's best friend and brother in the village. There is no jealousy
and he takes pride that one he trained with has risen up. As he has always felt
while he would welcome a leadership role, he does not need the title to lead, and
he continues to try to do so.

The Rites and beyond
Added Tue Dec 18 10:02:54 2012 at level 51:

Kelnith is greatly disappointed by the rites, from start to finish. But growing
up in the volcano teaches that the lava doesn't care about what you think is
fair, it does what it does and will eat away whatever is in its path whether
you like it or not, all you can do is accept and move on. So, his heritage
asserts itself and he continues the paths he is on, his purposes unchanged, his
committments unswerving. Not long before the rites he finished the training the
guildmaster can provide and with that behind him he has made his first call to
his new family to help him return and overthrow and do away with the tainted
rulers of his old family. Returning and defeating the Rahs in combat is
something he has envisioned for most of his adult life and he looks forward to
the day the march to victory sets out.

Likewise the fight against magic everywhere continues, though his aging and growth
has taught him how many who are not mages still fight and defend them, or choose
other reasons to set themselves against him and his family. He relishes the
combat, but abhors how many of them seem to behave, some, for example Rahedra an
elf, choose to lie, to steal, to in every way possible act the opposite of how
Kelnith would. Kelnith fights her himself, seeking her out, and every time she
flees. The rare time she tries to bring the fight to Kelnith, it is when she is
with others, or, most recently, when Kelnith is already fighting not one but two
scions, the advisor and one named naitan. The elf chooses to strike Kelnith rather
than the scion mages, adding her blows to theirs against Kelnith. Not but a few
hours later she begins lying to the new commander, saying Kelnith never fights
her alone, that she hunts him and he runs, and other outright lies. Cainargen
realizes the truth and the elf's complete cowardice shines through, but still, it
is very disturbing. Many enemies are just that, enemies, and he kills them or
sometimes is killed, but they do not resort to such abhorrent behavior, and for
those who do as rahedra does Kelnith has no sympahty, no respect, and nothing
but scorn. The perfect example was Baelyron. Kelnith tasted defeat at the
priest's hand and worked hard to reverse that outcome, and when he did it was
a victory to prize, over another who sought to be a true bearer. But the joy
of that victorious combat was deadened when, moments later, the elf took his own
life, forever. Kelnith had envisioned years of constant combat, warring back and
forth with a powerful enemy, requiring his best and utmost each time. The loss
pains Kelnith, though there is nothing he can do about it of course.

Paths to the future
Added Mon Dec 10 17:27:32 2012 at level 39:

Because of everything recorded before, above, Kelnith's plans for the future
remain strong, though somewhat enlarged. He left the volcano with the sole
purpose of growing strong enough to oust the Rah's and restoring the true
One Law to Kiadana. That goal remains steadfast and he fully intends one
day to challenge the whole family, one by one, until they all lie dead and
the use of magic is denounced and combat by the old ways once again rules.
But he has spent more years in the outside world now than he did in the
volcano and it would be impossible to remain unchanged, untouched, by that
experience. Because of that, and because he has seen the expansion and use
of magic in amounts he never would have thought possible, he has fully adopted
the war of the village, and the villagers within it, his brothers. He is truly
proud when they march together and take the items of their enemies, when they
show their strength either individually or collectively, when the deep joy of
combat comes their way. At the same time he feels the sting when one of them
or himself falls, or he sees in them behavior he thinks brings shame or weakness
to the village and its history. He did not have much time with the commander
Tiarhelle but she made an impression on him, along with some of the others, and
whether he ever holds a position or no, he hopes to lead by example, and
make the world shake in fear at the very mention of the Battleragers!

Time brings maturity and sometimes wisdom
Added Mon Dec 10 17:27:09 2012 at level 39:

Kelnith's years mount and he is fully adult. With that maturity has come
several lessons of note. Gone are the days of youthful arrogance and belief
in his own indestructibility and infallibility, replaced by a confident self-
assurance tempered with a knowledge of mortality and possibility of failure
and defeat. In one of the great ironies of life his understanding of these
things and of life in general came from an enemy, a particularly gassy windbag
of a nexun, who blathered on and on about balance, needing good and bad, chaos
and order, magic and mundane, and how they contrast and combine. It was the
contrasting part that stuck with Kelnith, and percolated for days until he
had an epiphany. His time embracing the values and life of a villager,
combined with his immersion in the teachings of Akresius, inspired him to
realize that the problem with nexuns (there are many, this is just one) is
that they take a second, wrong step. Kelnith sees that there are two sides
to these things, contrasts, but the second step, the belief that both are
needed equally, that is the mistake.

Kelnith's beliefs now go deeper, his maturity and his village and religious
beliefs all combining to channel him to understanding that of course there
cannot be courage unless there is fear, there cannot be victory unless there
is a chance for defeat. If there is no risk, there is nothing to earn, nothing
to gain. But, and this is the big but that the nexuns and most others don't
get, just because there must be cowardice to define courage, just because that
contrast makes the qualities clear, does NOT mean that one should prize both
equally! Just because there can be defeat, does not mean one should wish and
try for it rather than for victory! Existence of contrast does not mean equality
or preferability. Kelnith, as an adult now, accepts that he can fail. Accepts
that there is, has been, and will be more combat where he will be at risk, and
danger of defeat is high. But because of that, he can show his strength, his
courage, his desire for that very combat, and if he does well enough, his victory.
Maturity also warns him not to be reckless, that not all dangers and risks are
equal, either, and sometimes it's just stupid to fight some battles, for a
variety of reasons. But the judgment to know when those times come and when
courage begins bleeding into folly, that too is a contrast and one he has
will always grapple with to get right.

Cleansed of taint and return of his voice
Added Mon Dec 10 17:26:24 2012 at level 39:

Much has happened in Kelnith's life since last it was recorded. First the
more obvious. He finally met with the God Ysaloerye who had kept his tongue
and giving her the special cup with the blood of three mages she made him
swallow it, followed by the blood, and with her divine power a new, clean,
untainted tongue grew with miraculous speed! First with deep coughing, then
with fits and starts, he eventually began speaking again, with deep gratitude
to Ysaloerye. The new tongue functions mostly as did the old one, but remains
somewhat delicate, being new, and thus cannot take the stress of yelling.
Being able to communicate normally with his villager family was never something
he thought would be a problem, so having it back, being back to mostly normal,
is remarkably good. It's amazing how good normal can be when you've spent
time injured and deformed.

His time in silence did more than just make life difficult in some ways, it
caused him to re-think and change in some ways, or deepen and strengthen some
others. Always somewhat short spoken, being completely silent reinforced that
trait and taught him that even if you CAN speak, sometimes no words, no answer,
can be best. But it also changed him from complacency, forcing what creativity
he has that had lain dormant to come up and exert itself as he found ways to
make his mind known without speech. He still uses those skills, not always
relying on just words. He grew in this way, seeing the value in communication
and understanding, and seeing how they can be an important component of his
strength, in all aspects.

Secular and Religious beginnings
Added Tue Dec 4 22:52:57 2012 at level 37:

Meanwhile, his war and tenacity against the mages did not go unnoticed. The
commander required five mage skulls for consideration. He exceeded that. But
it took joining with other villagers and one other applicant in a raid to take
back the Head to inspire the God Thror to give him and the other applicant their
huts, and the chance to fight as villagers alongside the others. It was one of
if not the proudest moment of his relatively young life. He hopes and expects
others, but he will never forget that moment. For a fire giant dedicated to
bringing the true meaning of One Law back to his people, who prizes combat and
victory and the beauty of success in each, it was a very meaningful day.

Lastly, and speaking of such things, he made clear to the God Akresius his
intent to follow the religion of the Sanguine Chalice. He believes it
complements and enhances the more basic One Law belief, making it richer,
enhanced, and he has embraced it and hopes to be embraced by the God. Not
literally, of course.

Adversity can lead to opportunity for improvement.
Added Thu Nov 29 09:50:14 2012 at level 21:

However, all was not rosy in his life, and like all mortals he makes mistakes.
Kelnith's was a big one, though unintended. While particularly young he was
handed a potion, a bit of magic to make someone fly. He dropped it on the
ground, not wanting it and intended to destroy it, but somehow instead of
sacrificing it to the gods, he tripped, fell, and it tipped into his mouth,
entering his body and making him fly. His anger, his shame, his rage were a
sight to behold, but the deed was done and all he could do was continue in his
journey and work even harder to earn his place with the villagers, and prove he
was worthy. He never intended to hide the event, but the chance to do so never
even came up because many days later he, a giant, was abruptly grabbed by the
scruff of his neck as if he were no more than a pussycat and lurched halfway
across thera to Tahren's smithy, standing before him and Ysaloerye, one of the
village gods. Without ado or discussion she grabbed his jaw with a force and
strength greater than any fire giant ever had, she opened his mouth and peered
in, examining him for something. Sure enough, she confirmed to Tahren that she
found the stink of magic inside, and quick as lightning she ripped out Kelnith's
tongue! Kelnith, bleeding, stood unmoving, taking the pain as best he could,
though really it was more surprise than pain that shocked him. Even so, he
quickly accepted the necessity and rightness of the deed. Before he could
spend too much time imagining an entire life as a mute the God raised his spirts
with the chance of his tongue's cleansing and redemption. The cure? The blood
of three mages, gathered just at the time of their death, and mingled to combine
into a potent brew. This was his task then, though of course he'd have hunted
mages regardless. And, with diligence and time, he did slay three mages and
with a special cup, solid and with a tight seal, gathered a full amount of blood
from all three fresh mage corpses. He now awaits his chance to see Ysaloerye.

The early years in new lands.
Added Thu Nov 29 09:49:00 2012 at level 21:

So much has happened since Kelnith arrived on the mainland and significant
character traits have solidified. The latter is quicker, so we address them
first. He is short of speech, and very rudimentary in the common tongue -
not that he is so sophisticated in the fire giant tongue mind you, but
definitely better than common. Translating on the fly is hard, and he's
a regular, mostly average intelligence-wise fire giant, not the smartest
fire giant ever in the history of fire giants. He will often misunderstand
people if they speak too sarcastically, or cleverly, or unclearly. He also
tends to use basic affirmative or negative responses (yuh and nuh) as general
answers, greetings, status updates, etc. That all being said, he does not
suffer fools lightly, or feel any need to answer people who talk to him without
showing themselves. He's a fire giant. He comes from the One Law heritage. He
is not subtle. You want to talk to him, show yourself, identify yourself, and
be upfront about it. Like most of his kind he's wary of hiders like thieves
and assassins, and generally thinks of them as second class citizens of a sort,
but his time in the big world now has softened that, especially his interactions
with battlerager stealthy folks.

And speaking of the battleragers, it didn't take long for him to learn of them
once he'd arrived on the mainland, and he was both surprised and overjoyed (in
his generally stoic fire giant way) to find others who felt the same as he about
magic. He thought he'd be alone the rest of his life, or at least until he
overthrows the Rahs. He quickly came to accept that his future would be as
part of the village, and that the famed loyalty fire giants have to their
family only would now be transferred to the battleragers. It, they, would be
his family, and he would give them his loyalty and his life as they fought
in glorious combat together against their common enemies, the mages and magic.
Because of this, he sought out villagers, spoke with them, and after hunting
for the often invisible enemies he found and slew his first mage and then spoke
to the venerable smith Tahren, making his intentions clear, and public. Unlike
many who suggested he wait and kill more mages before speaking to Tahren, so
as to hide his hatred of magic and be less a target, he refused to hide who
and what he is, and scoffs at the idea. Did it make it harder for him? Probably.
But earning his goals, his victories, is his way. Not that he minds help when
appropriate, but being underhanded and subtle like that wouldn't even occurr to
him.

Kelnith Two
Added Sun Nov 25 14:39:06 2012 at level 4:

Quickly the elder told Kelnith he must go, he must banish himself and be
away, or die. Kelnith was not afraid of death, and in his rage was ready
to fight and die, but the elder restrained him, and in their giant ways he
beat some sense into Kelnith, teaching him the last lesson of his past and
the first lesson of his future, that sometimes it is better to live to fight
the righteous fight another day than to die for nothing. Death may be
glorious and unavoidable and even desired at times, but not for nothing, not
when it achieves nothing. Go, said the elder, and Kelnith did. Winding his
way up through the village and the volcano, past guards who had not yet
heard any alarm, and beyond the blue sieging giants, he made his way to the
seas, and headed west. Thinking the first city he came to was too close yet,
he continued west and made his way through beings and sights new to him, to a
city as large as any he'd heard of. A city called Galadon. From he he would
make his new life, one of combat against the magic he hates. No longer is he
Kelnith Bo-Rah, meaning Of-Rah's lands. Now he is Kelnith Na-Rah, meaning
outside of Rah, against Rah, the Anti-Rah. And one day, one day, he will return
and show the Rahs and their asskissers what the One Law truly means.

Kelnith One
Added Sun Nov 25 14:35:48 2012 at level 4:

Enter Kelnith. He is a son in one of the anti-magic families. Over the
years this belief has grown to encompass magic in general, not merely
magic in the hands of the Rahs and other giants of their kind. They have
now seen more of these travelers who come to their volcano, and some of
their own kind have ventured out. Even so, the Rahs still rule, and
Kelnith's family, like the few others who feel similarly, must blend in
and keep their true hearts hidden. Kelnith was still rather young when
he made his mistake. In a sword training class he was paired with the
grandson of the current Lord Rah, Nehr. They were of a size and physical
strength, and each were diligent students of the blade. But as the bout
drew on it became clear that Kelnith was the better. He began to press
his attack, victory in sight, when Nehr, against the rules, uttered a spell
and made himself invisible. Stumbling, his blade crashing to the ground,
Kelnith roared in impotent fury. A deep throated chuckle was all that
alerted him as Nehr, invisible, stepped up and slashed Kelnith's blade to
the ground and then scored the final victorious blow. Rage overwhelming
him, Kelnith spit out his hatred of the weakness of one of his kind using
magic. A hush fell on the group, the elder warrior instructor's eyes
widening, the first to understand what had just happened. Nehr recovered
next and with a kick to Kelnith's side he took off, yelling for his father
and other Rahs, alerting them to Kelnith's true loyalties. The other student
giants immediately scurried away, afraid of being tainted even by being near
Kelnith. In seconds only the elder and Kelnith remained.

Rah and Anti-Rahs
Added Sun Nov 25 14:31:52 2012 at level 4:

Rah was already one of the better warriors among the giants, and now
he combined that with his best grasp of the magic, making him the
strongest fighter of all. He began a brutal sweep of all challengers,
whether they actually challenged or not, eliminating them all in bloody
fashion. Eventually he was declared Lord of the volcano. His bloodline
continued to be best suited to the dark magics, and his scions have
continued as Lords of Kiadana, so much so that the volcano itself is now
named after them, Kiadana-Rah.

But not all of the giants agreed with the learning of these new ways.
Some saw it not as a new strength, but in fact as the opposite, as a
weakening, a dilution of their true selves. They were not created as
mages, just as they were not created as diplomats or scholars or
fishermen. The One Law was being bent, if not broken, to encompass
the greed and ambition for power of the Rahs and their cronies. Over
the years several had risen who could defeat the Rahs and their magic
using cadres in mundane combat, which in the past would have been all
that mattered. But they could not overcome the added powers of the
dark magics. Because of this, these families, true and loyal only to
themselves, hid their disagreements and lived quietly, preserving the
One Law as they saw it, training and fighting and living in the old ways.
Being what they are, they were often discovered, poor at secret keeping,
and many were put to death. But still they persisted over the generations.

The One Law and the Teacher
Added Sun Nov 25 14:31:02 2012 at level 4:

The One Law. It all comes back to that, which outsiders, speaking
in the common tongue, simply call Strength. It is that, but it is
deeper than that, as the giants live deep within the volcanoes of
Thera. It's not just the ability to lift heavy objects, or bend a
bar of mithril. It's strength of character - though of course in
ways that would mean something to a fire giant, not ways that would
be found in the guildhalls of paladins or the homes of elves and
such - and strength of ability. Strength of will. And strength to
use all that strength for the most important thing: combat. The
black giants don't have long talks and mediations, they fight. And
they fight with their weapons and their hands and teeth and nails if
necessary. That's how it has always been. Until the Teacher came.

The Teacher was a man, human, and part of something called the Masters
of Magic. None of the giants knew of these things but when this man
literally fell out of the air right in front of them, they did as
their nature commands, they attacked. He fought, a fiery demon by his
side, but he was obviously tired and hurt from some recent battle and
though he used powers unheard of to the giants, he soon succumbed.
Rather than kill him, the giants made him captive, curious about the
strange powers he'd used in combat. Bound and tied securely, he had
no way of escape, and though he tried, he could not get away. Over
the next days and weeks the giants forced him to teach and explain,
requiring constant repetition into small words, small sentences,
simple concepts. It was difficult and far from delicate, but in time
their crude abilities began to form, taking the lessons and molding
them to suit their ways. When they decided they'd learned enough -
though far less than the man actually knew - the one who had learned
and mastered the most, a giant named Rah, killed the man.
