Vutzig the Master of Weapons, Unlucky Giant
DescriptionNo mistaking the blue skin and green hair, this is obviously a storm giant, one of the men from the sea. Fourteen feet tall and several feet wide, he also has a depth, a thickness, that suggests plenty of physical activity. The hair is cut short in a manner making it clear that fashion sense is least among his priorities. Likewise the clothing, which is all serviceable and useful but entirely unmatching and without regard to color or cut. Various arms and implements of war are strapped, hanging or otherwise attached to his body, and where bare skin can be seen you catch flashes of scars and bruises in various states of healing. But all else quickly pales, insignificant when compared to the horrible scarring and twisted nightmare that is the giant's face. Inconceivable damage and what must be incredibly painful, unnatural warping has done terrible harm to his visage, and while you see two eyes, a nose, and a mouth, nothing else bears strong resemblance to normalcy. The rest of the body, what you can see beneath the clothing, makes you think that

39957, Vutzig's Role Chapter 11

RoleChapter 11 Fate in specific Added Fri Apr 27 11:55:40 2012 at level 40:As a result Vutzig has been thinking on his own life, his own place, and how his fate is important (or isn't). After all, he is but one, albeit the latest, in a long line of failed scions of the cursed Hollaran. His ancestors each sought an end to the curse, and each met with utter failure, doing little more than pass down the curse, the (flawed) lore, and despair. Why should Vutzig be different? Why is he fated to be the one to achieve redemption? For indeed, nothing is of greater import to him than to restore his family honor and lift the curse on him and on a son he might have. Until recently his answer would be "because I think so" or "because I will be stronger than they were" or something along those lines. That has changed, and he is different for more than one reason. He is the first and only to embrace the teachings of Fjarn, to understand the role of fate, and see how the winds have blown his entire family to this point. He is the first to take the step of actively joining in the war against magic, part of the village of battleragers. Perhaps understanding fate is a way to see, to glimpse, one's fate, and Vutzig catches such tiny flashes from time to time, often just before and just after falling asleep. He has a role and he will play it, gladly, holding back nothing from his efforts.

RoleChapter 10 Fate writ large Added Fri Apr 27 11:54:06 2012 at level 40:What is luck? Does it exist? Why me? These are thoughts that go through most minds at some point, but more often than others perhaps in Vutzig's. Life's been harder and he's been less successful in his war than he'd hoped, but he knows there's nothing for it but to press on. Even so, being mortal, he fell prey to self-pity and despair and at just the wrong time saw the god of (mis)fortune, Whiysdan. Reaching out in his depression he spoke with the lord of luck and asked why the lord had given him such ill regard. An interesting and entertaining conversation ensued, but as it must it ended with no answers. Vutzig spent much time pondering the god's words, and his own beliefs, and what he'd learned of his own lord, Fjarn. And as hours and days passed, despite the name Whiysdan bestwed, he began to shed the self-pity, and discard the belief in such luck. The final stroke coming during his long sought meeting with Fjarn, who allowed Vutzig to express what had been in his head for along time but needed talking through to solidify. Luck, for good or ill, is a fallacy. Kismet, fate, destiny, choose your words, these are the truth. Luck is simple, easy to blame or thank, and never needing explanation, and is thus the bastion of the common folk. Fate though, is complicated, it implies an inherent contradiction which at the same time is in harmony. What is fated cannot be escaped, what is fated will be, but if that is so, are we slaves to fate? Are we without choice or motive? No. Your fate will be revealed, but we must each make the choices, do the work, to arrive there. Fate "knows" whether we will succeed or fail, and even if we will try, but we must still do those things, and it is a choice. Inherent contradiction, yet at the same time no contradiction at all. The discussion with lord Fjarn helped Vutzig wrap his mind around these, and focused him on his place within it. Knowledge of fate as a greater, giant force is only half, the other must be the small, personal, individualized aspect.

RoleChapter 9 On Being A Goodly Rager In Thera Added Sat Apr 21 18:49:24 2012 at level 31:P.S. As a battlerager of the light, and particularly a scion of an old Knight of Thera house, he is keenly aware of the line he walks. He has great respect for paladins ("noble knights" in his vernacular) and all who hold goodness in their hearts. And he derives neither pleasure nor joy from seeking to place his blades in the hearts of elves and others that have chosen magic as their professions. But he knows it must be done, and he will do his duty. Even so, when any of the light die to his blades, there will be personal cost, even if no more than a moment of reflection, but perhaps also a more outward expression of sadness that such deeds are necessary. And of course there would need to be a significant set of extenuating circumstances for him to take the life of a goodly non-mage. Obviously killing a goodly soul for a piece of clothing or anything they might carry would be unacceptable. Though magical constructs that may appear as goodly are in fact neither living, nor good, but rather the results of the very thing he fights, and are thus fair game if necessary. Also, those that claim neither goodness nor evil, but some sort of neutrality, hold little claim to his restraint. He is no wonton killer, but if there are times he feels his war would be aided by the death of such a one, then he will not shy from doing so, as they are clearly not lighthearted. Like all things this will be something he must assess and judge as it arises.

RoleChapter 8 On His Hopes and Dreams and Goals Added Sat Apr 21 18:47:38 2012 at level 31:Finally, as he's aged and grown to maturity his beliefs, goals, desires, etc. have all done the same. He's seen first hand now the need for the war against magic, and not merely as the continuous tale of his family history. He's seen and felt the sting of rank dishonor and shameful disregard for even basic respect, deepening not only his belief in, but love of honor. And he's learned how much he in fact needs to learn. Many of the things he thought he knew, he was wrong, and already the commander, Salyeris, has corrected his mistaken lore. All of these things together have combined to produce a few results in Vutzig. First, he's no longer simply fighting for himself, or even for his family's honor, but also for the good of all thera, and for the welfare of his brothers and sisters, the battleragers. (Note: brothers and sisters are battleragers, friends are typically applicants or non-ragers who've proved themselves.) He is far too young to look for leadership in name, but to the best of his ability he will try to set an example for the others. Second, he has been to Fjarn's shrine several times, once even speaking to a Windgiver, and his initial and enduring devotion to honor has been supplemented with a beginning understanding of fate, and the winds that drive him and all others through it. Having made the solemn choice to pledge fidelity to Fjarn and his teachings, he will do so as well as he can. Third and finally, Vutzig has been made aware of several relics crafted by only the gods know, for the hands and body of one such as he, a battlerager of the light. He has made it a personal quest to bring honor both to himself and to the village entire to obtain and use these things in pursuit of that for which they were made: destroying magic.

RoleChapter 7 On His Appearance Added Sat Apr 21 18:46:07 2012 at level 31:During this same conversation the tribunal commented on various youngsters staring at him, even if they tried (poorly) to hide their rudeness, and how Vutzig seemed oblivious. No, replied Vutzig, he was completely aware of it, but after so many years, his whole life, living with such, he rarely consciously reacts or comments on his monstrous appearance. His outward behavior for the most part seems normal, typical, a studied act that really by now is more than just an act, and his responses and expressions will usually only reflect his curse when some external stimulus provokes them. Constant staring. A first look and reaction by a stranger, someone he's meeting for the first time. And of course, though he isn't consciously aware of it, every time he smiles or frowns or makes any other facial expression. At such times, when he is forced yet again to confront his gruesome and macabre frontage, he becomes dour and angry, as you might expect. He's not difficult to understand and for the most part acts as you'd think in these matters.

39952, Vutzig's Role Chapter 6
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 6 On Order Added Sat Apr 21 18:45:13 2012 at level 31:There was an occasion of late when Vutzig, during a moment of quiet, of no mages or other enemies to hunt or training to do, when he was engaged in conversation by one of the tribunals. Order, he said, is not the same as the law. Order, he said, is a universal concept, a state of being and environment, often thought in opposition to chaos. Law, he continued, in specific the tribunal law, is simply a concocted collection of rules that some people decided to make up, for certain small spaces in certain parts of the world. Rules to make people do things or not do things and rules to set penalties for those that break these made up rules. But these fabricated decrees are not themselves Order, nor does following or not following them make one Orderly, or even lawful, unless you equate lawful with those few specific "laws", which isn't necessary, the "laws" of nature are just as much if not more "laws" and they've been around a lot longer for sure. So then, Vutzig went on, he prizes Order, but has no particular feeling one way or the other tribunal's laws. Perhaps they do some good, but they also do some bad and they have no claim on his allegiance or adherence. However, he does prize Order, and that is demonstrated in strict adherence to various codes, various systems of behavior. In some ways he is very predictable, and indeed that can be a downside, a vulnerability that can be exploited by enemies. But it's a price he pays willingly, and really doesn't even see as a price. He follows the Order of his chosen allegiance to the Village. He follows the Order of his chosen lord, Fjarn. And of course he follows the Order, the behavior demanded, by his devotion to Honor. None of these demand or even desire adherence to tribunal rules, and he does not disagree.

39951, Vutzig's Role Chapter 5

RoleChapter 5 Vutzig's Honor Added Wed Apr 11 14:41:50 2012 at level 3:But he can do this only after knowing what honor, at least for him, means. One thing has not changed over all the years, and that is the desire for honorable combat. This does not mean he cannot accept aid generally, or help others, he is goodly of heart and in moments when not reminded of his devastating ugliness, can be as jocular and fun as anyone. He can give and receive gifts, healing, and all the other things those without Honor might prize. But when it comes to engaging in combat with the adventurers that have journeyed to or arisin in Thera, he will do so himself, without the advantage of numerical superiority. Moreover, while many of the creatures and beings native to thera are much stronger than any one theran, and adventurers typically fight them in groups of three, he will not. He will travel and learn on his own, until his guildmaster is finally pleased. Again, this does not mean he will not engage some of these creatures and beings with others, when there is great disparity between strength, such as dragons or other beings of known renown. Also, honor does not demand stupidity or lack of strategy or tactics. When traveling if coming across several creatures or beings, if some are separated, or made inactive, that does not mean the remaining one in combat must be left alone. These, like all things, will in the end be left to his judgment, and the judgment of those who will judge him. Honor has a brighter line than many codes, but still not every situation is exactly the same, and he will do all he can to live within the bounds of that Honor. He does not seek perfection. He is mortal and such is unattainable. But he will go from day to day, taking what comes, and fighting and living with honor as best he can.

RoleChapter 4 The curse down the ages... Added Wed Apr 11 14:41:01 2012 at level 3:Unable to bear it, Hollaran screams in anguish and before anyone can move, hurls himself out the bell tower window, taking his life forever. Shocked silence follows, but before long the gathered knights and squires begin to react, and some are dispatched to Hollaran's home to speak to the wife and her young son. In that way does she learn of what has happened, and while she is torn between taking her life and her son's, she cannot bring herself to do it, and as he grows he learns of his father's deeds, and the curse. He vows to redeem the family. He vows not to father a child until he does. But he fails, at both. And this pattern repeats itself over the years, the centuries. Each son - and it is always a son first, strangely - vows to be the one to bring an end to the curse. Each vows to remain chaste until he succeeds or dies. But each fails, and as each ages he weakens and gives in to a desire for a son to succeed where he has failed.
As the years and generations go by, as with all lore, the story is slightly changed from telling to telling. By the time Hollaran's many-great grandson Vutzig is born, the need for the restoration of their Honor remains, but now he is Fated to be the one, not merely one in a chain. He will be the end of the chain. And, though the original, true cause of the curse was Hollaran's own behavior, over time the family has placed the blame on magic, first in the form of the dark mages that called up the dark being, and second in the form of the dragon's magic. Without these things, Hollaran's honor would not have been broken, and then the curse would not have been placed. Only magic can cause such horror, enduring for thousands of years. And only by fighting magic, rather than what Hollaran would have called simple evil, can Vutzig now find a place to fight with honor. A fight he looks forward to greatly.

RoleChapter 3 And then becomes a true nightmare... Added Wed Apr 11 14:39:25 2012 at level 3:On the day that he is stripped of knighthood and the mark of the unbreakable blade is removed (with sorrow, and words of encouragement at least from the knights), something snaps inside him. The months of caution and control are gone in an instant and he lashes out, the pain overcoming his intellect, and with his own hands he strikes the golden dragon! So powerful is his anger and despair that they fuel terrible blows, knocking aside those who come to help and defend, and before the horror-stricken eyes of his former comrades- in-arms, he strikes a mortal blow! As it lays there dying, its blood flowing in a river of gold, it uses its last breaths to speak: "By the magic of my blood I lay upon you and your children a curse, so that all may know of your treachery, and know you and those of your line may not be trusted. You will not be hunted, but you will find no succor, either, until one day, long from now perhaps, a child of yours can find and restore the Honor that you have lost this day. You shall bear this mark the rest of your days, as shall your first born, and his first born, and so on. So shall it be." And with that the noble creature gasps a death rattle and submits to death.
Hollaran looks up and from those around him he hears gasps and cries of dismay, just as he begins to feel intense pain, as though his face were on fire. His face begins to contort before their eyes, twisting and molding and moving in ways no giant's face was ever intended to be. The excruciating pain goes on for what seems to be forever though in reality is only a few seconds, but when it is done his face is disfigured so badly, mangled so thoroughly, that it is difficult to tell who or even what he was and is. Nothing remains untouched or unchanged, and no remnant of symetry or normalcy can be found. At the same time, in the forgotten city of Ofcol, screams can be heard from a mother and child as the boy undergoes similar torture.

RoleChapter 2 Turns into something far different... Added Wed Apr 11 14:36:24 2012 at level 3:But even as he prepares to act, to do something, the being locks eyes with him and speaks in a voice no mortal throat could produce. "Puny mortal! Knight of Thera! Blade of Cador! These are nothing! Hear my words and know the future!" Pausing, he lets Hollaran stand there and stew for moments, apprehension clear on his face. "Know this! You will fail! Your blade will be broken! Your Honor will be cast down! And you will be the cause for your own suffering! Nothing you can do will change this, mortal, know this, and despair!" As the final word leaves its mouth, the creature disappears with another dark flash, though the sound of his words continue to reverberate through the hall for several moments. As he recovers, Hollaran hears one of the dark mages speak, "We go now, knight, and leave you with this. The words were truth. We did not know what prophecy would come, the magic can only be performed on a newly made corpse of a powerful mortal of the light. But whatever is said as a result always, always, comes true. You will not be surprised if we find great pleasure in this. You surely will not believe us, but when it comes true, remember that once, at least, you were given nothing but unvarnished honesty from the Shadows!"
Quickly departing, the Shadows leave Hollaran alone. He feels his body begin to reform, but his mind is in torment, awhirl with many emotions, chiefly disgust and disbelief. But no matter how hard he tries to deny it, deep, deep down somewhere a part of him cannot discount the words and believes what he has heard. He vows to make the prophecy false, and at first scoffs at the idea. But as days and then weeks go by, he becomes more and more consumed with worry, he begins second guessing his actions, holding himself back so that no matter what he will not engage in dishonorable behavior. Eventually he becomes so afraid to live his life, for worry of acting to fulfil the creature's words, that his inaction, his fear, renders him unfit for duty as a knight, and as a bearer of the unbreakable blade. Just as the dark being foretold, he has caused his own fall.

RoleChapter 1 What starts as a routine defense... Added Wed Apr 11 14:25:16 2012 at level 3:The torch of Shadow safely in the keeping of the Knight guardian, Hollaran takes the time to pray to his lord, Cador, of the unbreakable blade. His honor steadfast and true he takes pride in his duties to the Light, and is grateful for the trust of the Marshall and the Gods. The way of honor is not simple, and can sometimes lead to pain and sacrifice, but it comes with great internal strength, and a clarity few can imagine. But moments after he begins his prayers the air shrieks with screams as dark mages of the evil Shadow cabal come seeking to retrieve the torch. Quickly finishing up Hollaran prepares and strides through the gatehouse to meet the challenge. Too late he sees not one but three, and before he can plan a strategy for victory, he is engaged and defeated, the torch restored to darkness.
He is no stranger to death and defeat, evil can be powerful, otherwise what need for knights, but what happens next shakes him to the core of his being. Before his eyes two of the shadows, dark mages both, begin vile incantations, the very words painful to hear, abrasive to his ears. Deeper they chant, stronger, with growing sense of ominous forboding and a perceptible diminishing of the light. Soon, though it is mid-day, the gatehouse is dark as midnight. And just as he thinks he can take no more, that his eyes will pop and his ears will bleed, the shadow mages reach a terrible crescendo and scream out the final words of their black ritual. A flash both brighter and yet without light at all blinds Hollaran and as his vision returns he sees where his corpse had been is now some dark being, a demon or devil of substantial power, visible waves of Evil rippling outward from its body as if heat from a fire. Helpless and ghostly Hollaran can do nothing, but he is not one to simply fall in abject terror. He is a Knight of Thera! He is a bearer of the Unbreakable Blade! He will stand even if there is no power in his arms or legs.
