Description

Before you is a male arial with large, childlike eyes and a round,
flat face covered with creamy coloured feathers that look like down.
His beak is small and triangular and has the same orange hue as a peach,
and near his ears are wispy black feathers sticking out at all angles.
His shoulders seem small compared to his head, and his arms are
similarly slender, but covered in scars that warp and twist his
feathers into disarray and leave one patch above an elbow completely
bare.

An assortment of daggers are strapped tucked into his belt and strapped
to his thighs, and you see he also carries a short spear to contend with
pesky beasts. Despite his worn and battered appearance, he carries himself
confidently, and looking upon him you also see

Chapter 6

Rites of passage

Long after I am dead and the stones which were laid as the foundation for
my hut have been turned over, I will hope that these words I pen will be
discovered, and thoughts I have been loathe to share will be revealed to
my allies and those foes who have taught me so much about who I am. For me,
I must look upon my fights with Shaendath as a turning point in my life, as
it was after my combats with him that I saw myself in a new light. I have
grown to accept, in how Shaendath no longer seeks to attack me on sight,
that it is best to stay off of battlefields that are not of your choosing,
yet his actions give me confidence that I carried into the Rites of Battle.
I beat the odds-makers and defeated Djetmai and Mauz, both potentially
fierce foes. More importantly, Lohakahn taunted me, as he did the brothers
he fought before this final contest, and I was unmoved until the Hammersong
bid the fight start. Lohakahn was defeated, and several of our bloody
warriors privately thanked me for silencing that rambling tongue. This
fight, above all the others, set me up higher in the eyes of my men.

I say 'my men' because I was put in the position of Drillmaster, and it
is a duty that feels foreign upon my shoulders. Since I left my employ with
the arial nobility, I have worked in a manner entirely centered on satisfying
my own needs and whims. Now I find myself in a position where I can help
others become better than they are by achieving the common goals all of us
in my new home hold, and I find that I actually care for their well being.
Not so long ago I was a callous murderer, and now I lead warriors, MY
warriors, into bloody and decisive battles. I want them to survive, in part
out of my own selfish desires, but also because I want them to conquer, to
flourish, to become a fighting force that has not been seen since the days
of legend. Achieving this, the sanguine chalice will be filled to overflowing,
and the glory earned will live on in generations of the village to come.

Chapter 5

A call for blood

It is the eve before the Rites, the celebratory event surrounding the selection
of the new commander. It is with heavy heart that I know I shall miss the
entirety of the blood that shall be made sacred by the event, by I am moved by
knowing it shall take place, as the inner nature of these men and women will be
revealed to them upon the torchlit battleground and the shadowy confines of
the forest beyond. To have been named a leader of those glorious blood-clad
warriors is but an idle fantasy, but to have helped baptize our leaders in our
sanctified lethe would have done right by my lord, Akresius.

I have since my last meeting with my lord spilled much blood in battle, but one
victory above the others stands out, that of Shaendath, an assassin from the
Fortress. It warmed my heart to redeem myself against him in a pitched battle,
for he had with others routed me in a battle some years ago and seldom have
my battles between lone assassins ended in death. The fight looked to have
been his early, but he made two mistakes that together allowed me to stand
over him in victory. I yet look for a similar moment against Solec and Elanya,
although I have found it with several foes of lesser status.

Chapter 4

A shift in loyalties

The court is a dangerous place, fraught with threats hidden behind false
smiles and empty promises, and always is the metaphor of chess. The
board is the world, Lothir taught, and those who study our arts but mere
pawns to be moved about and sacrificed as the king sees fit.

This bitter reality was driven home to me when I had been sent to Tir
Talath as part of an entourage to diplomats. One of the princes whom
we accompanied saw fit to attempt to bribe a chambermaid to obtain
papers outlining the trade strategies of the duke; the clumsy scheme
did not work, and the prince in question, a conjurer of little note,
used his familiar to lay evidence at Lothir's feet, claiming that this
"merchant" had sought to elevate his station through unfair trade
practices. The king, for reasons of diplomacy, summarily had Lothir
executed, although I have reason to believe he was quite angry that
his son caused him the loss of his spymaster.

Lothir was the closest thing to a father I have had, and his betrayal
by the royal family pushed me to become independent. Though I seek
revenge against them, my religious upbringing and my training as an
assassin extoll me to deliver this vengeance in a cool temper. To
better protect me from the sorcery utilizized by the prince I have
sought the training of the Battleragers, specifically those of the
scouts who seek to ply their trade through stealth and cunning.

For now, though, I seek to hone my craft on lesser targets than the
prince, so that when the time to strike is right I may serve my nation
best by serving my prince his death.

Chapter 3

Faith

When I was six Lothir took me to the foot of the mountain path, and without a
word I began the climb. For one as small as I such a climb is arduous, but
I had not yet reached a destination, and I was not going to fail in reaching it.
The thin air carried a sharp chill, but my exertions left me panting like a
winter bird caught in a tropic wave of heat. I had not yet learned what I
was being groomed to do, but I knew that I could not fail.

Pushing on through the damp clouds I saw the great temple to my Lord Akresius.
I pressed on, and in the altar saw the grail, filled with crimson lethe
sanctified by glorious battle. As I looked upon it, my eyes swam with
illusory images of scenes of battle, a dumb show of ghostly forms enacting
that moment when the contest of wills is expressed in motion. My vision
wavered, and then there were two men bent over a game of chess, one whose
king was in peril but for whom victory was yet possible, if only he could
find a way. A shimmering, then two elders in an animated debate, their faces
expressing joy as their spirited argument plays out. These images spoke to
me, transported me to the insight that in a moment of conflict, the beauty
of the spirit is revealed.

I have visited the shrine and offered prayers three times now, and the
images have not ceased to inspire me.

Education

Lothir taught me of numbers and letters, the great waltz of the stars in the
heavens and the latest dances in court. He encouraged me to become familiar
with the guardhouse, to learn the art of listening to more than what was said
and to speak only what he wished to learn of later as a rumor. He taught me
the use of fine silver cutlery, and with it we played a game using sleight of
hand, introducing a little green pea into the food or drink of our companion
while trying to spot him as he did the same. Occasionally he would test me
by having me plant or filch an item or recall what I had heard at banquet word
for word. It was a great game I loved, riskier than dice and as tactical as
chess, and when I received his sparing praise I was the happiest boy in the
world.

My studies involved anatomy, the hidden mechanisms the preserve life in our
kind and how the various races differ. Gruesome charts he hung on the walls,
and occasionally he brought in the corpus of an animal for dissection, and he
taught me where the blood moves through the body, the disposition of the organs,
and how to use the knife to find them all.

In his darkened cell, Lothir also taught me the use of staff, spear, sword and
dagger. The buckets of sand were used to desensitize our hands, and as my life's
hourglass continued to run, the sand became coarse, and then gravel. This is
useful for one in my profession, but like so many aspects of our training, we
cover our scars at the banquet table lest we be seen as the monsters we are.

My death letters

It is the eve before I am to be sent on my first mission, and as the taper
burns low and sleep yet eludes me, I will do as many have done and write
a "death letter." A clumsy phrase, and it carries in it none of the hope that
its writer will survive the task given him, but an art as vile and ancient
as mine has no hope for its artisans. Death is inevitable; it is the
decisive moment of struggle that matters, for in that single beat of the
heart exists our entire lives.

I am called Iepnier in this life I lead now, but long ago I held a different
name, a name taken from me as surely as I was taken from the hands of my mother
and given to the royal family in the city of my people. Lothir raised me as his
apprentice, and my earliest memories were of scrubbing the dark wood floor and
the crack of the switch if I allowed my concentration to falter, of carrying
water from the common well in the plaza up to his tower chambers in the dead
of winter. Discipline and loyalty, he would later argue, are essential for
those of our arts. We owe the royal family, he would teach, for food, shelter,
and our very existence, and to repay them for their kindness, we must do the
work that should not touch their hands. I am no longer in their service, but
some traditions like this letter still serve a purpose, and I will keep them.
