Naija the Planewalker, Justiciar of Thera

Description

This young woman is obviously of desert stock. Her waist-length black hair is
long and smooth, it looks as if it were recently brushed. Her eyes are large
and vibrant, as blue as sapphires. She has a small nose and thin lips. It
seems as if she doesn't prefer to powder her face or use any other cosmetics,
and she often wears a serious expression on her face. Her frame is small,
though her hips and bosom are neither over-attractive nor damning in their
fullness. She stands only about five feet tall, though her serious demeaner
can often times make her seem as if she looks down at all she surveys. Her
clothing is adequate for both an evening in the library or a jaunt of
adventure. Almost unnoticed on her left wrist is the marking of a dragon's
tooth.

Seventh Journal Entry
Added Fri Dec 30 16:14:00 2011 at level 51:

Well it has been too long since I've written, and I keep saying 'oh but I'm
too busy!' I suppose that is the way of it. I have acheived two of my goals
since I last wrote, the first I will write of is Lord Twist. He appeared
before me as I was fighting my way through bushes and brush and getting
attacked by a druid and a shapeshifter near the tree, he looked at me, said
'Foolishness', and left! I felt so embarrassed that I wanted to die, I
thought he meant me personally, but Lord Twist I'm learning is very...distant
and cold of mortal affairs. He doesn't seem to be concerned with me at all at
times, what I do, my goals and ambitions..it is a wonder that he saw fit to
mark me as his own at all! But he did! I wear the mark of the dragon tooth
proudly upon my left wrist. Lord Twist says that I am his chosen and favored,
and if I continue my efforts and our goals align he will name me his Lord of
Thaumaturgy.

To that effect, one of the things I got the opportunity to speak with him on
is whether or not I had his blessing to continue forth with my goal of a mage
training program for the city guard. He said that this idea pleased him and I
may continue with it with his blessing. I had a meeting with several
Magistrates and plainly stated my goals with this. All of them agreed that
they too would seek out guard Captains and prominent members of guard circles
to speak on accepting mage applicants for their watches. I believe this might
come to pass after all!

Sixth Journal Entry
Added Wed Nov 9 15:56:34 2011 at level 51:

I've made some decisions. I have decided that I need to be less aggressive
about things. Initially when I came into the Spire I felt like I had
something to prove, and I did, to myself anyway. Now I know that I can take
the fetish alone, even against two or more defenders. I know I can bring
battlerager berserkers, even the Commander himself to justice if need be. I
know I can defend myself from nearly any single opponent. The problem is the
cost that this 'knowing' has exacted upon my physical body. Each time I fall
I feel a little weaker, and here lately, I fail to triumph more than I
succeed. Having accomplished these feats, usually as a one woman army with no
other Magistrate participation, I have learned that in actuality it has no
impact on the things I am trying to change about the world. We may hold the
Outlander's item of power for a time, but what have we gained? There are more
Fortress criminals than there are Outlander's. What do I prove by bleeding
and falling to blows of death from Villagers? I was hoping it might be a good
means to make myself look better and more efficient in Lord Twist's eyes, but
he has yet to make himself known to me so I must explore other venues of
pleasing him.

My point is, I will be fighting less. If Outlanders become a nuisance more
than they are now, I will go back to taking the Fetish. If criminals are
running rampant through the cities, I will defend the innocent. I would like
to focus more now on actual investigation and maintaining vigilance in
protected cities than chasing down vagabonds in my free time.

I will continue to explore venues by which to catch Lord Twist's eye, I will
continue to keep the veil thinned whenever possible, and I will continue
pushing for a stronger city watch through the implementation of mage
cityguards.

Fifth Journal Entry (spillover)
Added Wed Nov 2 15:57:57 2011 at level 51:

I am not perfect, I have flaws, obviously. I do my best to serve Twist and
Magic, I keep the veil thin to allow lesser mages to see their own potential
and what happens if they work harder as well as make things easier for
everyone. I don't believe in restricting magic. I don't believe in lies and
deceit. Why hide? Face your flaws, face your weaknesses, be honest about what
you find when you do. If you don't match up to the hardships you're facing,
get help, better yourself. But recognize you need help! Right now I need
help, I have no idea how to deal with this. I am faced with the dillema of
murdering members of the Light to protect society. I've already had to battle
the Sunwarden of the Outlanders countless times to keep their item of power.
That in and of itself weighs heavily on me. My point with this paragraph is,
I know I have flaws and am not perfect, but don't tell me I don't have the
best interest of the Light in my heart, don't tell me I'm lesser than you
because I write a letter that asks that you stop and think about your
actions. I'm not a bad person, don't paint me to be one to justify your
actions. I feel like I'm grieving. What are the steps? At first I denied what
I was seeing, then I was angry, then I bargained for them to turn themselves
in? Well, now I'm just sad. But I will NOT accept what is happening in the
world when I can do something about it.

Fifth Journal Entry
Added Wed Nov 2 15:56:43 2011 at level 51:

Oh those Maran have infuriated me! When I was growing up I considered heavily
becoming a member of the Fortress, and discarded the thought for this very
reason! Lawlessness! Flagrant disrespect of order and law. Protect the
innocent? Ha! Since becoming a Magistrate I have seen more flags on members
of the Light than I have the wicked! I did not sign up to battle storm giants
and elves! How dare they preach protection and practice murder in the
streets! Last night there were FIVE Fortress criminals near my jurisdiction!
I spoke to the Captain and the Marshall, the Marshall ignored my words
because he said he shouldn't have been marked because he was ignorant of the
laws. The Captain said his flag didn't matter because the innocent guards
couldn't see him to attack him....the very captain that threw a Maran OUT of
the Fortress for breaking a law less than a year ago! Two other Paladins were
criminals, both refused to turn themselves in! Where is the Code?! Where is
the respect of the law?! Where is the HONESTY in the Fortress! How can they
lie to themselves about what they're doing? It's a slippery slope, it's a
long drop, and most of them are already halfway down to the bottom as far as
I'm concerned!

--

I wrote the above yesterday and I think I've calmed down some and am less
irate now. I penned a letter to all Therans that I hope will cause some
discussion amongst the Fortress, but I already have a strong feeling that the
general response will be offence and that I am a bad 'lightwalker', as has
already been mentioned to me by two of them. I took up this cause because it
is in my blood, I am highly offended at their stance on the law and protected
cities. So what if anti-paladin's serve the Spire? That is cause to break a
pact that said none of the Fortress would break the law? Why would it have to
be a pact in the first place? Why would waging war in places people go to
safety be a good idea? How would that not inspire fear and domination to the
populace? Lord Marcatis himself brought the anti-paladin into the Spire that
'broke the pact' with Fortress. Well let me share an idea and IF YOU THE
READER GET NOTHING ELSE FROM THIS LET IT BE THIS MESSAGE: Which is worse, a
chaotic anti-paladin who serves the Chasm and eternal night, or an
anti-paladin that serves the Spire? Where do you go for safety from a Scion
anti-paladin? Where do you go for safety from a member of the Spire? *By
corralling anti-paladins, necromancers, evil shamans, and any evil being into
the confines and restrictions of the Magistrate we are giving innocent
individuals or any individual looking for safety a haven from them*. Any
protected city. Places of safety. As they should be.

Fourth Journal Entry
Added Fri Oct 21 16:41:28 2011 at level 51:

My studies are paying off I believe. In an effort towards furthering the
magic of bridging planar rifts from greater distances of time and space I
have discovered a link that directly ties power of the conjuration process to
the veil itself in a way that was previously undisclosed to the members of
the common guild. I can now conjure greater archons. I do not know what
happened exacty and am trying to discover it, but Lauren arrived to my
calling with far greater power than previously she had. I once again believe
it is linked to this newfound power of greater conjurations and how they are
tied to the veil based on the channeling of power.

I am excited about my newfound post with the Spire. There are many
improvements I see that can be made, but am not in a position to change
anything. Strangely enough I am driven by a desire to shame my father for
what he did, I want to find him and I admit I have been scrying for him. I
can't wait for the day I find him and my mother, I wish to see his face when
he sees the things I have achieved. He will be sorry that he dumped me off
when he sees my potential and what he could have been a part of. I have a
burning desire and ambition to rise as swiftly as possible within the ranks
of the Spire that I might not only serve my fellow man and the Light, but
satisfy personal goals as well. Perhaps these are shallow reasons, and
writing them they truly seem to be, but it is much deeper than petty
vengeance. I truly want to see law, society, and the civil flourish. We are
capable of so many things as a people, and magic will make everything
possible. One dream of mine is to utilize the power of magic to aid with the
city guard. As common as magic is in Thera it is ridiculous to not see it
utilized in any protected city as a means of stopping lawlessness. Thieves,
assassins, and villagers all skulk about with nary a care in the world. We
actually have a Magistrate who GAVE UP HIS SHAPESHIFTING just so villagers
wouldn't bother him in the city. It sickens me. I told him it was like being
falsely accused of rape and cutting off your manly bits. There is no reason a
mage should neuter him or herself because the village is a deceiver of Theran
society. Yes they are powerful, but they can be beaten and driven back. I
plan to continue keeping the veil as thin as possible and will never give an
inch to the village.

I plan to write a text for our library on how to tell when a criminal or
witness is lying. I have already been knowingly lied to by an Imperial,
however it was not my jurisdiction to place a flag. I feel Magistrates will
benefit from a tool, and I may have already written about this. Thus far I
have had no Magistrate respond to my letter asking for instances of when they
had been lied to.

At any rate, Lauren and I are going to bed now, good evening.

I wish to write a little more about my purpose and views on honesty as a
whole and how it melds with magic. In life there are many people who pretend
to be what they are not. They lie at a moments notice to make themselves look
more powerful and deceive others towards their own goals. Magic is the most
honest life purpose an individual may hold. Magic doesn't lie, it doesn't
deceive. You either have great ability based on efforts you've put in, or you
have weak ability based on a half-hearted approach and lack of devotion.
There are parlor tricks that can deceive the general populace into awe, but
at the end of the day these tricks are just that, they will not save the
world. If we our true to ourselves and honest with what it is we want out of
life, and we are honest about the efforts we put into obtaining our own
goals, there is nothing we can't do. Self deceit, excuses, and general
laziness will keep the sheep in the herd, but true-to-self honesty will make
the sheep into lions.

Lauren bids me to write a greetings from her, she is doing very well and is
more attached to me than any limb. She is the sister I never had.

Third Journal Entry
Added Mon Oct 17 09:59:21 2011 at level 44:

I haven't really written much in my journal lately because I was waiting to
share the good news of my becoming a Magistrate. I feel like I should write a
few things now though. I haven't become a Magistrate because I haven't been
able to secure an interview with the Provost. I have however managed to speak
with multiple members of the Spire and gain written recommendations from
them. I am looking forward to serving with them, but I know we will have a
few minor instances of clarification based on some of the things they were
asking me. For example, I had a gnome inform me that if you are in a group
and your groupmate takes things from a corpse, steals from someone, or
attacks someone, even if you didn't participate in any of these things, you
will be a criminal because law one states that you will be held responsible
for your groupmates actions. I interpret this aspect of the law differently,
specifically to the point of ignorance is not an excuse if you jump into a
fight your fellows started.

I have had conversations with the Immortal Lady of the Fortress Padwei. I
enjoy my conversations with her, she gives me clarification on my purpose and
I know I have made the right decision to seek out the Spire instead of the
Fortress. She says that she disagrees with my path because the evil in the
world traps us in the cities, that if there were no evil we wouldn't need
walls to put ourselves behind, but I choose to live in the now and protect my
fellow man based on Thera's current state. I will not have unlimited
lifetimes to help the innocent like she.

I am furthering my abilities in my guild immensely. I can't believe how
blessed I am to take and mold the power of the veil as I'm able to, some of
the things I have been taught still amaze me. I have not reached my fullest
potential yet I know, and I still have much to learn. I am naming myself here
and now a follower of the Lord of Magic, Twist. I wish to serve him through
the constant thinning of the veil, and the furthering of magic through the
Spire. I have many ideas and plans I'd like to put in place, but I am in no
position now to do so, I have much to learn of my own abilities and how they
will mesh with my duties of the Spire. I will approach Twist after I have
made contributions worthy of his attention.

I wish to write a little more about my purpose and views on honesty as a

Second Journal Entry
Added Sun Oct 9 07:44:24 2011 at level 26:

I learned a valuable lesson today. Don't take the easy street. The short of
it is, I learned to conjure angels, and I was very excited about it. I had an
adventure planned and we were all ready to go. I got excited and wanted to
contribute to my party, and took a risk. Well, that risk nearly got me
killed, and it made its own mark upon my spirit. The angel came out angry at
having been called by someone so untried as me and in such an ugly world, it
struck me, and I did defend myself with futility. I was able to recall my
dismissal ability, thankfully, but..I still felt I lost something with the
battle. Perhaps time will show that all I lost was a bit of smugness.

I will continue to push as quickly as possible towards my rise in the guild,
but I will devote more time to these safety of myself and those around me,
including those which I bring into Thera from other planes.

Speaking of that, I wish to briefly write about Lauren. Lauren is an amazing
creature, she is a coyote. She is my familiar, and she shares the closest
bond with me of any creature or individual I've ever known. I think she will
prove invaluable as I grow, especially when it comes to the war on the
anarchy and societies nemesis, the Outlanders. I am so thankful to have her,
and greatful to Lord Twist for blessing me with the ability to bring her into
my life.

As of yet I have not been able to meet with any Magistrates, I'm not certain
where they all are. I can't wait to sit down and speak with them. I have
already witnessed chaos in the streets that if I were a Magistrate I'd have
been able to deal with effectively. As of now I watch and wait.

That is all for now.

civil, though. I want to prove to him that..that I wasn't soiled refuse, that
I am capable of making a name for myself even if I was defiled and broken by
his enemies. I will be better than he, I will rise to a higher station. I
want to be a Magistrate of the Spire. I want to rise in my guild and achieve
things beyond the ability of the every day conjurer. My archons will sing

First Journal Entry
Added Fri Oct 7 16:48:36 2011 at level 1:

It won't be long before I am called back to my studies, so I will make this
entry as brief as I can. What would my father think of me now? A conjurer.
When he was in service as an Advisor of Law for the Sultan, Conjurers weren't
even allowed to be in Hamsah Mu'tazz. My mentor says that to truly embrace
the mana and open myself to the veil I must be clear of mind and spirit, and
that a journal would help me focus my efforts by putting troubling or in
depth thoughts on parchment. Here we are.

He was a noble and fair judge and Advisor, my father. He was a protector of
the people. He had always been a guardian of the people, from his first day
as a youth in the tower watch to the prestigieous position he had when I was
born. So when they came and took me from my bed and he was unable to defend
me, I think it ripped a wound in him that would never be healed. As a child
they said I was the most important star in their sky, that they would always
love me. But when they found me and saw what had been done, that I had
been...abused..broken..not able to have children anymore..that all changed,
and I was only five years old. They said they gave me up for my own safety,
but I feel they gave me up out of shame. Shame for what had happened, shame
for what I represented, a failing on their own parts. They lied to me, and I
don't know that I will ever forgive them for abandoning me.

I fell in love in the great Library of Hamsah Mu'tazz. I discovered
knowledge, power, and books. Usually they let me spend all my time reading,
but more often than not I had to work. Organize the parchments, dust the
shelves, keep the ink wells full. I loved reading about magic, and magical
things the most. Magic has a certain honesty to it that I hadn't felt since
my heart broke from the lies of my parents. Magic doesn't lie, it is pure and
honest. You either have it or you don't, you are strong or you are not. Magic
gives, and magic takes. You get out what you put into it. There are
tricksters with parlor cantrips, but the true magic comes from within and it
is beauty incarnate. These villagers that run wild in the streets pillaging
and murdering, they don't understand. They are profane in their beliefs. I
wish they were gone from the world. But at the same time, I feel like even
they should be afforded the protection of our cities. They deserve a safe
place to feel the comfort of home and hearth. Who am I to deny them
civilization and society?
