Description

Before you stands an ivory skinned elven woman, the color resembling her high
born cousin's more than her wood-elf ancestry. Onyx colored hair flows freely
down the sides of her face to her shoulders and slightly in front, partially
obscuring her face from view. A pair of narrow pale gray eyes flecked with
red and gold gaze outward from underneath her hair. She obscures most of her
body with various attire, though what can be seen of her ivory skin appears
unblemished and eerily even toned. However, a circle of thin crimson
markings appears to have been tattooed around her entire left wrist while her
right wrist is marked by similar markings in an azure color, almost
resembling script of some kind. As you look at her there is the faintest
sense of some intangible quality surrounding her.

Chapter 13

Reflection.

Time. It was seemingly slow to pass until Allysia looked back. Centuries, no,
more than that. Over a millenium had passed. Few mortals live so long. She
knew her life was drawing to a close. Her body did not reflect her age, but
never had it. Whatever blessings the runes had bestowed upon her, the
essences within them waned now. Long had it been since she had called upon
them, for indeed both had already become a part of her and had begun to
consume her. Invoking them may only hasten that. But if the balance required
her to, she had no choice. To fail the Island was to invite death anyway.

Allysia did have a promise to uphold. The one promise. That to Lady Rayihn,
to never again fail the Island as she had. She had pledged her life as
forfeit to the Goddess should she fail her again, and for that the Goddess
accepted her. That was centuries ago. Her service to the Island had endured,
she had seen many new faces come and go, new Rhymes, new Meters. New allies
and new foes had emerged. But now in the back of her mind she felt something
new. The looming specter of Death, that she had sent many to herself, now
hovered abover her, waiting.

When death would find her mattered little. There was strength in the Island
still. It's purpose never ending, but the Keepers never yielding to its
demands upon them. Such was what being a Keeper required. Few could
understand the life Keepers lead, and among them fewer could understand that
life she had led. But it had made sense to her. She had lived as herself and
as a Keeper, finding her own balance between who she was and the duties she
performed.

As Allysia looked around the Island she still felt out of place, as if she
were a relic of times past. These Keepers had not been pushed to their limits
by ones such as Flaaayin and Elgroth, among the deadliest villagers she had
ever known. She hoped none like them would emerge to again test the resolve
of the Island, but she could only hope if new threats did, the Island would
meet the challenge. And if she was still alive, gladly would she meet the
enemies of the balance at the Keeper's sides one last time. For the balance.
For glory.

And for her.

Chapter 4

Revelations.

Forced from her home, Allysia began making her way through Thera. It became
readily apparent all of Thera was gripped by an endless struggle between
opposing forces. Creatures of darkness and light fought constantly, but in
the wake of their battles, so much more was lost. Forests burned to ash.
Homes destroyed and pillaged. Countless dead. It made little sense to her how
people endured in such miserable lives. How could they not see they were all
the same. That if they could find peace with each other none of it would need
to exist. They had differing motives and ambitions, rationalizations,
justifications for how they acted, but the sum of it was the same. They could
never coexist, would never coexist. The war between them has no end, only
casualties. A sad state of fair had befallen Thera, and yet none seemed to
mind.

This was something Allysia could not figure out. How could they fight, and
not see that they destroyed that which they were fighting over in the
process? If this were allowed to continue, there would be nothing left. The
endless war would consume Thera, just as it had her forest. It was too much
for her to accept idly. There had to be more she could do.

Allysia determined she would find a way to put a stop to the war, to the
battles, which would end the casualties and all the collateral damage it
brought. The cycle had to be broken, or nothing would ever change. Lives had
been halted in the name of a battle that would never end. It could never end
so long as there were those willing to fight it. That was the thought Allysia
had the caused her to realize what she had to do. Remove those who fight, or
the will to fight for such and the battle ends. No war lasts without those to
carry it forward. Now, it would simply be a manner of figuring out how she
could do that, but as she walked she knew she would find a way. She smiled
slightly. After all, how hard could that really be?

Chapter 5

Life on the Island.

Allysia sat in the corner of the garden, humming softly to herself as she
listened to the conversation between a gnome in silver robes and a heavily
armored dwarf on the values of magic and steel in a fight. Naturally, each
had their own opinion about which was of greater use, but accepted that both
were necessary in part. She chuckled to herself, listening quietly. It was
peaceful, and it was these moments she relished, for they reminded her of her
time in the peaceful forests. Thera was stable, at least for now. Her
acceptance by the Nexus had granted her the ability to read the subtle tides
of balance in Thera, and the strength to fight to ensure it remained. Perhaps
it was their presence that made things calm, that she did not know, but she
liked to think that they kept balance and peace by their presence, for she
knew if something changed, the three of them would set out to restore balance
once more.

She stood up, stretching her legs slowly, and walked by the arguing pair.
They did not notice, not that they should as she moved silently and their own
conversation was far more interesting it seemed. As she left the garden she
heard the dwarf say something about how it was difficult to cast a spell with
a metal gauntlet crammed down their throat. As she left the room she saw a
flare of light emanate from behind her and and a dwarven yell about being
blind and damned gnomish trickery followed by faint snickering. She laughed a
little herself at that. If anything, they knew how to keep themselves amused
in these peaceful times.

She moved to a faint corner, lit only by the dim glow of a few candles, and
settled down once more, pulling out her lute which she began strumming softly
as she hummed along. Peace had its benefits, but at times she could not help
but feel the slight tedium of boredom set in. The Island was her home now, as
she had given up her life in the forests to serve with them and ensure the
peace she knew at the moment endured. But still. In the faint recesses of her
mind, she could feel something pulling at her. Almost hoping the balance
would shift, that the call to action would be raised. Yet, she could not know
why she had these thoughts, nor did she understand them herself. It was not
always there, but at times, when the peace seemed timeless, that faint lust
within her began to swell. Now was one of those times. Had she not been
bathed in candle light, she would have noticed the crimson runes on her wrist
glowing faintly for a moment, before fading as the lust within her did.

Chapter 6

The Runes

All was balanced, and mana was almost flowing through the air itself. The
villagers' beloved head sat within the Nexus, something that would no doubt
cause them to come to the Island. For the moment the Island's halls were
empty, save Allysia. She wandered about the Island, drinking some ale and
practicing a song when she heard a yell. The Guardian was under attack by a
cloud giant and a duergar. They had come, just as she expected.

She took out various trinkets and began shielding herself from harm with
magical wards. Her pulse quickened as she ran to the guardian, seeing the
guardian being assaulted by the pair. As she glided into the room silently
the pair failed to notice her until they heard her voice sing the nocturne
that would summon their own fears before them. Both of them shrieked in
uncontrollable terror as she completed the song, and they began fighting off
an imaginary attackers.

At that she then struck at the duergar with her sword, singing the various
songs her training had allowed her all the while. The notes weakened the pair
considerably, and as she pressed the duergar the battle favored her clearly.
With a graceful flourish she delivered the final strike that ended the
duergar's life, relishing the feeling of mana crackling over her body when
she did. It was followed almost immediately by a second. She glanced back to
see thebody of the giant on the ground, unharmed, but lifeless. They had
such fragile minds. A pity they had come, for their deaths proved needless in
her eyes. She did not need to kill them, but she would not let them upset the
balance of magic, and so their deaths had at least been necessary to preserve
the balance that already existed.

As she calmed down, imparting a song for the departed souls, she felt
something odd. A strange warmth on her wrists. She glanced down and saw the
azure and crimson runes. The azure one glowed faintly for a moment,
accompanied by a slight warmth until the glow faded and the warmth subsided.
These runes had been on her the whole of her life and she had never bothered
to learn what they were. Perhaps because there was no reason to. However, as
she looked at them a vague uneasy feeling crept within her. She was calm, but
unsettled. Perhaps the time had come to learn what these odd runes really
were.

Chapter 7

Returning home.

The halls of the Island were quiet. Two pale eyes gazed around the empty
halls briefly, and spying nobody around, glanced down at two wrists, each
marked in runes, the only difference being the color. Centuries has passed,
and yet she had learned nothing. The runes remained a mystery to Allysia.
Even with all the knowledge present in the tomes within the Island's
libraries, nothing had been learned. The runes still glowed at times, a
familiar warmth accompanying it, but she still failed to understand the
origins or the meaning of them. Perhaps the only place she could find those
answers was the one place she never wished to return to. Her one time home.
She sighed heavily at the thought of returning, but there was no avoiding it
now.

She made her way quickly through the familiar forests and trails until the
moon rose high into the night sky. It had been centuries, but she had never
forgotten the path to her home. She soon happened upon that familiar place,
and though it was dark, she knew it instantly. It was her forest. The one
burned to ash. It was vibrant and filled with life once more. A smile
appeared on her face as she made her way towards a large tree, made her way
into the branches and settled against the trunk. Instinctively she began
humming once more. It was as if nothing had ever changed. She hummed for an
hour or so, before the cool night air and familiar sounds and smells of the
wilderness embraced her and lulled her into a deep restful sleep.

She awoke to see a gray haired figure perched on a branch no more than ten
feet away. His body and ears showed him to be a wood elf, a rather old one at
that. Allysia's hand slid towards her blade out of instinct, but the figure
did not move. He just sat there, looking at her. "The scouts told me you were
coming. I thought it for all if I came to meet you. Even after all these
years, that marked little child has not been forgotten. And to this day these
woods are rumored to be haunted by you. By the little girl with out a soul."
She shuddered at hearing his words, but his voice was calm and soft and his
eyes never left her. "There is much to discuss."

Chapter 8

The meaning of the Runes.

Allysia sat there, appraising the old elf before her. She remembered him, he
was the elder of the village she had left. She slowly stood up and stretched,
before settling back down against the tree. The elder just sat there,
watching her. "I believe I know why you are here. I always imagined you would
return some day. Most believed you were killed when the forest burned, that
only your ghost remained haunting these woods." His old eyes glanced
slightly down, and Allysia knew he was looking at the runes on her wrists.
"Perhaps that might have been best, but here you are before me, and so now I
am faced with what I had hoped to never have to explain. Those runes..." His
voice trailed off into a long sigh.

The old elf began recounting the story of Allysia's birth to her, of the two
souls within her. How he had bound the two. "But you see, I could not tell
what might happen once bound. The spell was only meant to be used on one
spirit." He glanced up at the morning sky before looking back at her. "And so
I never told you, cause I still do not know what might happen were those
spirits to be unleashed within you." Her ears perked. "Told me what?" She
looked at the man, and for the first time his expression faltered slightly.
"Those runes, they are words of an ancient invocation. Ancient ancestors in
our village used to bind an animal spirit to themselves, so that they could
call upon it to imbue them with their strength. Each time they invoked it,
they would be granted the strength for a time until the spirit was gradually
pulled back into the runes. But it was an imperfect magic, and each time less
was rebound into the runes. In time, they found the spirit consumed their
soul until they became little more than the spirit within them. Even those
who invoked it sparingly became consumed. The spirit within gradually will
take over the body. And so the magic was forbidden and forgotten, as it was
too dangerous for any to continue using."

Allysia looked down at her runes once more. "And I have two such things
within me? What are they?" The elder sighed at her. "Your own spirit was
bound when I used the magic, and that of another being, a dark spirit that
seemed to radiate malice was bound as well. We feared it would consume you
entirely, but the magic worked to keep the two apart. Now each is present
within, gradually becoming part of you again. And I can not say which will
emerge and which will be consumed. I am sorry Allysia, but in this there is
nothing I can do to prevent it. Time alone holds that answer."

Chapter 9

Senshalxera.

Allysia looked at the man for a moment, then back at the runes. "What is the
invocation?" The old elf raised his voice slightly. "Were you not listening,
one spirit will consume you, and I do not know which. To invoke them will
only further the process. You must not use.." Her voice cut him off abruptly.
"Quiet!" she glared at the old elf. "For centuries I have not known what I
am, and still you seek to deny me? And you tell me now I am not who I am, and
I should just wait? I'll not have that. No, you will tell me. And I will do
with the knowledge what I may. I am not some little child anymore. And I will
not be treated as such, least of all by you!" The rage was coming through in
her voice, and the crimson runes flared with light on her last word.

"Do you not see, that is the dark spirit, it wishes to be freed. It has
sensed a chance, and it wishes to consume you once..." Allysia's voice raised
to a level that her words echoed through the forest and slammed the old elf
against the tree he was sitting on with an audible cracking of ribs.
"Enough!" the fury was apparent in the word as the crimson runes pulsed with
energy, and a dark shroud seemed to envelop Allysia. "Tell me now I will not
ask a third time." Those words were cold and deliberate as her eyes narrowed
in on the old elf, who struggled to stand, a trickle of blood coming out of
his mouth.

"Very well." the old elf stammered. "So long as you swear to leave this place
before you invoke it, and never return, I will tell you." Allysia looked
around the forest briefly. "Agreed." The old elf glanced at her again, before
looking down. "Senshalxera." She looked at him. "That is all?" The old elf
nodded weakly. "That will unbind them, though only one will manifest itself."
Allysia looked at the frail man again. "I trust you were not deceiving me.
Very well, I shall depart." She jumped from the tree to the forest floor, and
began walking back towards the Island. She had her answers about the runes
after so many centuries, now the only question was what she would do with
that knowledge.

Chapter 10

Channeling the Runes.

Allysia ran a finger over the crimson runes, remembering the warning she had
been given about setting them free. She had not heeded them though, and had
called upon the invocation. The first times were difficult, and she almost
had no control over herself and was little more than the embodiment of those
things. But with enough use, she grew to understand the nature of the magic
within the runes, and so understand herself.

The runes were not contained spirits as the elder had said. The spirits were
destroyed when they were bound into a person. What remained was the essence
of the bound thing. The wood elves of her former village had gradually
degraded into wild beasts, for such was the essence of what was bound within
them. She chuckled, knowing the elves of her old village had failed to
understand truly the magic they used. With practice and discipline gradually
she learned to control them, and most importantly, how to use them. By
tracing the runes as she invoked them she could control which essence flooded
her being. And by repeating it she could force it to retreat back within the
runes.

When Allysia invoked the essence of the crimson runes, it allowed her to act
swiftly and without hesitation in doing things which she must. It allowed her
to live without remorse, without pity or mercy. She could take a life as
easily as a breath. When channeled, it allowed her to become as a demon in
battle, only concerned with sating a primal bloodlust, shrouded in a faint
aura of darkness. There were drawbacks though, as at times it became
increasingly difficult for her to find the will to force the essence back
into the crimson runes.

The invocation of the azure runes imbued Allysia with an odd sense of
compassion and warmth. Too often life on the Island could be violent, filled
with turmoil and strife. It could wear on any, and it had upon Allysia. But
the azure runes flooded her with a sense of well being and relief, it was at
such times she could truly lead and inspire her fellow Keepers. At times to
lead she had to be swift, decisive and merciless. Other times called for
compassion and understanding, such as settling her Keepers nerves, calming
their minds, reassuring them of their duties and of the importance and value
of their own lives. And in such times, a faint halo of reassuring warmth
seemed to emanate from her, calming those around her, and most importantly
calming herself as well.

Presently, with the village currently holding the Key, she knew what she must
do. As her Keepers gathered at the Island to prepare for the counter strike,
she traced her fingers along the crimson runes and whispered the word
"Senshalxera" audible enough for only her to hear.

Chapter 11

Thror's compliment and Allysia's thoughts.

At the Eye of the Storm in the Island the sounds of a few Keepers having just
returned from a large battle with the Villagers could be heard. Chulun, in a
rather inebriated tone, was grumbling to others about wanting to go crush the
heads of various villagers, though this would prove difficult as most were
already deceased after the current fray. Argorok was sitting in a quiet
corner further contemplating how he could perfect his mastery over the
elements, having little apparent concern over recent events. Brebauche was
somewhere within, but being in the other dimension made him rather difficult
to keep track of.

Through it all Allysia sat there, silently watching over them. The essence of
the crimson runes had faded from her, the satisfying deaths of numerous
villagers had made it easier to confine the essence within the crimson runes
once more, and once more she could allow herself a moment of thought. Allysia
was proud of the Keepers. As the Rhyme, she had seen many Keepers rise and
fall, and she had grown to see them as her own, as if she were their mother
or guardian. And she wanted nothing more for them than to flourish, which it
appeared they were.

At that moment a powerful force shook the Island, and before them emerged
Lord Hammersong. The Lord of the village was in their halls. Allysia knelt,
instructing the other Keepers to as well. One thing she knew was to always
show respect to a god, though she did keep a hand cautiously near her sword.
He was after all, a villager, and they had just slain many. His words were
brief, but the meaning in them were clear. He had come to pay his respect to
the Warders of the Rift for their handling of the villagers. His departure
was swift, but it left a strange feeling in Allysia. The lord of those who
sought to destroy her and the Island, had paid his respect to them, and
foremost to her. It was a compliment she would not have expected in a
lifetime, and yet there it was.

After he left there was more idle conversation, but Allysia began pondering.
The Island had grown stronger, balance was often in place, and the villagers
own strength was waning it seemed. But she began to wonder, what would come
in the future. She would not endure forever to watch over the Island and lead
the Keepers. The Island needed a reminder of what all Keepers before them
have done, and must continue to do if Thera was to endure. Most importantly,
future Rhymes and Meters. She wished to leave something to remind the next
Meter and Rhyme of the hallowed position they hold, and the importance of it.
It was no easy task, but ideas slowly came to her. The difficult part would
be seeing them fulfilled.

Chapter 12

Allysia Shadowsong, Outcast of the Island.

Allysia hummed a familiar eerie tune as she strolled through her shadowed
grove of trees. Her forest was in place once more, no one would ever know it
had once been razed to ash in a meaningless fight centuries ago. It was
comforting to her to know that time often restored things to as they should
be. The snapping of a nearby twig caused her eys to glance to her left, and
yet her hand did not go the pommel of her favored blade. Nobody would bother
her here. Nobody would have cause to bother her again.

Allysia Shadowsong, the Nullifying Requiem of Fates, and now, Dragonslayer,
was an outcast from the Island. Lord Twist had warned her of pursuing her
course, told her what would happen if she failed. By any other's account the
failure, and yet it was for a Keeper because the balance dictated it was so.
She had not argued the lord's will. He had his view and she was too old to
much care if the lord of Magic, or any other for that matter, understood or
agreed with what she had done. She had gambled, betting her own life that
they would all die in the jaws of that beast. And she had lost. And such was
the price she paid for it.

As she came to an oak tree, she climbed up and settled upon a branch, musing
upon her long life. Those of the fortress offered her a place, a chance to
join them, but she declined. She was no different than she had ever been. If
she ever had a home, it was in these woods. Keeper, or no, she was the same
as she had been. If the Island and her former allies needed her, she might
aid them. She might also kill them, if they forget their place, much as
perhaps they will say she had. It was a dissappointment, perhaps her own
failure with them, that they did not object to what she had set to do. Their
loyalty was to the balance, not her, and in that, those Keepers had failed as
well.

A slight chuckle to herself escaped her lips. She saw the irony in that she
had ended the fates of many, perhaps cut them short before they were ever
fulfilled. Inevitably it seemed, she had ended her own as well. She could not
deny, no longer bearing the burden of leadership was somewhat refreshing.
Maybe one day she would return, she did not know. For now however, she would
finally take some time to enjoy life without regard for anything else.

Chapter 3

From the ashes.

Allysia made her way down her oak tree without a sound and approached the
elves without saying a word. The fires around her made her presence readily
known to the two elves, and the injured elf caught sight of her, but kept
trying to save his friend. As Allysia came to be beside the elf he spoke.
"He'll die soon if he does not get some help. Perhaps you might aid us?"
Allysia looked at the elf, and whispered to him "Just as you aided me by
laying waste to my forest? Very well, I shall aid you in similar fashion."
His attempt at a response was garbled as Allysia plunged her dagger through
the back of his neck, his body spasming slightly in the throws of death
before it collapsed along side the dying elf.

Allysia knelt by the corpse and slowly drew the dagger from the dead elf's
throat, and glanced over at the dying elf. Slowly she whispered, "This was my
forest. My home." She gestured around at the burning forest. "Centuries old.
Left now to burn to ash. And for what?" Though the elf could barely talk, he
managed in raspy whispers. "They were evil creatures... they had to be
destroyed... for the good of us all... it was our sacred duty..." Allysia
crept over to the elf and got on top of him so she was now straddling him.
She looked down into his emerald hued eyes before she leaned down and kissed
him lightly on the cheek. She then whispered into his ear. "And look what
doing your duty has brought to my forest. I am sorry, but I can not forgive
that..." And with that word she slid the edge of her dagger gently across the
elf's throat. In the light of the fire, she failed to notice the glow of the
runes upon her wrists, and when they faded an almost undetectable shade
darker of crimson was there, while the azure had grown lighter.

Allysia got off the body of the elf, rose back to her feet and looked around
at the burning forest and all the corpses once more. She caught sight in the
corner of her vision the dark elf had managed to get to his feet and was
walking towards her, blood dripping to the ground from several deep wounds.
He made his way to be standing beside her, making a comment about cursing
high elves and Thera being better off. However before he could speak further
she flung out her left arm and drove the dagger into his chest, letting the
dagger remain buried in his chest as his body collapsed to the ground. As he
stared upwards at Allysia in his final moments of life she glanced down at
him. "Such a needless waste..." she whispered to herself. Once more she
failed to notice the faint glow of the runes on her wrist, though this time,
the azure had darkened and the crimson lightened.

She glanced around the burning forest, red and gold light dancing around the
area. The snapping of and crackling of blazing wood, the thick smoke in the
air, and all that would remain soon would be a gray ashen ghost of her former
home. She inhaled the smoke, the essence of her home, and walked away.

Chapter 2

Battle in the forest.

Allysia Shadowsong sat in her favored oak tree, humming a gentle tune to the
forest when her ears perked up as the familiar quiet of her forest was
yielding to the sounds of approaching beings. Her pale gray eyes slowly
opened and looked out into the forest. There they were, approaching from the
east. Three orcs and two duergar were plowing their way through the dark
forest while a pair of massive fire giants strode behind them. Her eyes
darted to the flanks of them and caught sight of moving shadows. Dark elves
it seemed, two of them. They kept pace with the others but were trying to
remain unseen. However, her eyes were not easily fooled. This was her home,
and she knew every tree and shadow. She also knew about the camp of five high
elves laying in wait not much further to the west.

The two leading orcs were dead in an instant as the elves sprung their trap,
two from each side swiftly striking from the flanks and driving their blades
in deep slashes across the throats of the creatures. The last elf began
chanting arcane languages, and magical fireballs streaked from his hands
towards the remaining orc, killing it as well. As the orc was incinerated by
fireballs the two duergar and giants charged forward and engaged the elves.
The battle erupted from that point into savage chaos, neither side relenting
on the other. The casualties mounted quickly. One of the duergar died
quickly, then a giant fell as well, before the first of the elves was cleaved
by the axe of the other giant. More fire from the wizard sent the other
duergar to his demise, and the area was ignited in flames. The mage however
had failed to notice the shadows moving behind him, and the two dark elves
plunged swords through his back, the blades coming out of his chest.

Allysia sat their in her tree all the while, watching the battle draw to a
close. The three elves managed to kill the giant, and one of the dark elves
before the last injured dark elf managed to escape in a puff of smoke, but
though the elves could not see, Allysia knew he had not gotten very far, as
she spotted him trying to conceal himself in some bushes. At the battle scene
one of the high elves was dead, another now lay dying on the forest floor.
The last was severely injured as blood could be seen flowing from numerous
injuries, but was kneeling by the other trying to tend the wounds of his
friend.

Allysia looked around at her forest, much of it burning still as the fire
consumed it. She then looked down at the carnage, the bodies, and then
narrowed her eyes upon the two elves.

Chapter 1

The soul binding.

An elder wood elf looked down at the newly born child, a concerned expression
on his face. A small ivory skinned female child with black hair and narrow
gray eyes had been brought to him, for she did not resemble most others of
their kind. Stranger still, the child appeared to be humming softly as it
looked wide eyed back up at him. It was a faint, but eerie sound that sent a
slight shiver down his spine. It felt vaguely unnatural to his ears, almost
supernatural.

In all other respects the child seemed normal, but the elder's concern
remained. After some thought and study, it was his conclusion that a lost
soul of some kind had found it's way into the child, that their souls had
become one and to try and remove it now would kill the child. He could not
determine the nature of what had possessed the child, but he could not risk
it taking the child's soul entirely. All he could do was try to bind the
soul, both the child's and the spirit's, so that it could not take control of
the child entirely. As he finished the first part of the binding a thin
circle of deep crimson runes appeared around her left wrist. When he finished
the remainder of the spell the child's right wrist was marked in the same
runes, but this time in faint azure.

The souls had been sealed into her, and though the concern had not left the
elder's face, he let the child be returned to the village. He had never used
that incantation before and he did not know what might come of it. The deep
crimson markings were surely a sign of darkness in that spirit, and the faint
azure of her own markings made him worry. But he kept his concerns to
himself, less the other villagers cast her out should they become aware of
what she now was.

As the child grew, the villagers noticed she was different than the other
children. She had little interest in play, or in others, or really in
anything normal children enjoyed. She still hummed often, in disquieting
eerie tones, but most often she spent her time just resting in trees, away
from all the others. So it went for years, until one day the village awoke to
find her gone, though none really missed her.
