Cotzibue Arraska the Mistress of the Graves, Anathema to the Empire

Description

Cotzibue is a thick mummy firmly wrapped in stained strips of cloth.
Enshrouded in a dark overtone, its form is solid and eerie to behold. Its
face has been concealed in layers of stained cloth, but it continues to hold
its facial structure absent the soft tissue of a nose. It seems to have
empty eye sockets, lacking any type of fleshy tissue, but within the deeply
black recesses there is a magical energy. Burning brightly in the shadow of
its hooded robe, tightly secured in the folds of its bandages, a blood red
gem radiates. Its appearance seems to have been feminine at some time with
strong cheekbones, fine jewelry, and an elegant dress overlaying its
lady-like form.

Evolution

Detached from what was once alive, Cotzibues mind, magic, and manifestation
are adapting. Habits formed as a member of the living society continue to be
present in her daily existence, as she still observes the need to seek
knowledge. But as much as the basics stay basic, the extremities of her
magic startle her. She can see she is different than the world around her.
She knows she has become what the authors of darkly protected scrolls merely
rumor of. Her revenge driven studies as a scorned mother drove her to excel
in the dark arts, to complete tasks too heinous to speak of by those bound by
morals, and to emerge an abomination.

In her wrapped form, she realized powers she had never conceived as a mortal.
She had studied the undeads ability to take the form of a wraith, and to
raise and control sentinel undead as no mortal could, but feeling the essence
of life drain from the living with her touch was a rush she never expected.
Feeling the essences of strength and soul from the living feed her being as
she ignites the warm bowels of her victims in her hands, drenched in mortal
blood as she shreds their freshly removed hearts between her teeth. And now
through the unbelievably powerful rituals of Davarrah the Ravenous, she is
unsure of what her mortal guildmasters would label her.

Chapter 5

Haunting the Underdark

Passing through the hollow and dark walls of the Underdark, she calls to the
souls surrounding her. Blood flies as her tormenting sorcery pulls the
unlife from the very cold walls she floats through. Existing on instinct,
she knows she is searching for her children, yet for what seems an eternity
she has not found them. Some would say her madness is setting in, some would
say she has been insane for a much longer time. Long spans of time seem to pass
before Cotzibue, so many associates and enemies have come and gone.
Determined to remember, she continues to forget. Cotzibue forgets realities
of what it was like to alive. She forgets what it was like to feel the
sensations of emotion, emotions associated with being with her family and her
successes in life. No matter how many decades she haunts the eerie passages,
she feels her bond with the negative plane strongest there. Her rage to
destroy the dwarven race, her void of emotion because of them, it fills with
negative energy here. Convinced this is her intuition, Cotzibue eternally
searches for her children, continually nourishing her being with negative
energy.

Alone in the Arraska House

Teth Azeleth was in celebration as Cotzibues day had come to pass. Accepting her
award in the absence of her family, she delivered her long and pre-written speech
with regard for the Matron Mother while toned with an underlying anger. In her
mind she had pictured this day. Images of her beautiful daughters and loyal husband
watching from the front table sharing in the success and honor she had strived to
obtain. Before her though at the front table, in her moment, sat no one. And with
each former students story and their remarks of appreciation, she gazed upon the
empty table whilst her anger brewed. Trying to maintain her dignity, she played
along, shaking hands and receiving her praise sternly until the event would come
to a close. And with the party over, she returned home without her family, escorted
only by a pair of drow patrollers.

Entering the Arraska house, Cotzibue noted droplets of blood upon the floor.
Following the trail of blood with obvious concern for her children, she finds Knome
slumped over the table. Enraged she screams, Where are they?! Where are my
babies?!, as she frantically searched the empty home. Knome was mortally
wounded, his entrails exposed as he shivered with a strong poison. Demanding
to know, she listens in delirious tears as Knome weakly recants the horrid events
of the surface trip. Cotzibues heart freezes in her chest as her dying husband
describes how the drunken dwarves had so callously driven over her babies, crushing
their frail bodies. Explaining and begging for forgiveness, he tells her how he had
attempted to drag their lifeless bodies home, only to be thwarted by the cavefisher
leaving her beautiful children in the tunnels of the Underdark. Overcome with hatred,
Cotzibue rose from her collapsed state on the floor, centering her rage upon the
betrayal of her once loyal husband. As she grasped a knife in one hand, she pulled
Knomes bloodstained hair lifting his head from the table. With malichious intent she
sliced his throat, throwing his head back down to the table.

Chapter 3

The Cost of a Elegant Dress

Without Cotzibues knowledge or permission, Knome lead their daughters to the
surface. He knew the path well, and the dangers that associated. Competent
in the arts of combat, he was confident there would be no problems. Emerging
from the Underdark, they made their way to the seaport of Hamsah Mutazz in
the dark of night. He knew the finest of things could be found there, as
ships from across Thera came to dock there supplying merchants of all types.
Ever aware of the children, they browsed the shops amongst the crowds of
consumers. Finally, after hours of exhausting browsing, they located and
purchased the perfect dress. Knome knew they had spent too much time at the
market, and feared their absence would soon be discovered by Cotzibue.

Rushing the girls along, they departed the city walls onto Eastern Road
making their way home. He knew his young daughters were tired as they
dragged their little feet down the road, knowing never before had they
undertook such a journey. Eager to complete his quest undiscovered, he
insisted they continue. But as the road is long and the foreign sun ever
searing, the girls demanded to rest in the shade of a copse of trees along
the way. After a short rest, Knome pleaded to his daughters to continue,
knowing there would be hell to pay if Cotzibue were to become aware of their
absence. Dredging down the final segment of the road, nearing the city of
Galadon, he advanced a small distance ahead of the exhausted girls.
Periodically yelling back for them to keep up, he could not hear the great
rumble approaching them from the rear. And with his eventual awareness,
Knome turned around to witness the oxen drawn cart racing toward the
children. As if frozen in time, he yelled for the girls to get off the road,
but it was too late. Drunken beyond the point of notice, two dwarves cheered
on the speeding team oxen as they trampled over the beautiful and frail
Arraska girls continuing down the road before him.

Honoring Cotzibue

After many years of heading the math programs for the Matron Mothers school
system, Cotzibues service had been recognized. A ceremony was scheduled to
honor her accomplishments and her dedication to improving drow society. This
acknowledgement was a proud moment for Cotzibue, and her husband and
daughters knew this event was significant for her and the Arraska family name.
Her stature in the city of Teth Azeleth would elevate, and with such the rewards
of more gold and finer residence were inevitable. Her loyal husband, Knome,
desired to show his personal gratitude to Cotzibue and conspired with their
daughters to find a gift worth of such an occasion. Together they agreed a
proper dress would be needed on Cotzibues special day, as her normal
wardrobe was simply not elegant enough for such a ceremony. Knome knew
Cotzibue would never allow their beautiful daughters to surface in search
for such an article. But his better judgment was easily swayed to the belittling
arguments that he could never select the right dress by the strong willed
females Cotzibue had developed. In secrecy, plans were made to surface
unnoticed and return in haste.

Life Below the Surface

Cotzibue lived a normal life in Teth Azeleth. She was married to an obedient
husband and with two intelligent daughters so she viewed herself as a
success. The Matron Mother had appointed her to a position of high regard in
the citys school system, teaching math to the children. Day in and day out
she would show the young drow how to calculate numbers. Years of teaching
the mischievous children had hardened her demeanor and left her with quite
the reputation for one of the schools meanest teachers. Stinging the
children with her ruler was not below her and often brought relief to her
sometimes frustrating job. There were days she found herself in a fluster
over the chaotic youths, but all in all she found purpose in her life,
returning home at the end of the day to be praised by her daughters and
pampered by her husband.

The bond between Cotzibue and her children was cold, a strict parent, she
knew it was in their own good to respect her rather than show foolish
affection. She delegated the responsibility of feeding, clothing, and
general care for them to her subservient husband. Having confidence in his
service to her, she never gave much thought to the care for her own children.
At the end of each month she would routinely set aside time to educate her
daughters in the history of Thera and share with them the lore of the lands,
then vigorously test each of them. Each month she grew more proud of their
advancement into drow society and her aspiration of their success became the
most important thing to her existence. Cotzibues life was in order, and she
reaped the rewards of service to her Matron Mother and as head of her own
household.
