Edylaen the Lurker
DescriptionHidden half among the shadows is a half-drow trying not to be noticed. Her eyes glow faintly and reflect the light as she watches her surroundings. Though it's hard to be certain, you ascertain that she stands around five and a half feet tall, which is short even for a half-drow. Her slightly rougher mocha-colored skin, what you see of it, and her long ears give away her heritage. She has a rather boyish figure and face, but the armor she wears is clearly cut for the female form. Her hands keep near her sides and her belt, but she appears to be so deft with them that it's hard to track them with your eyes. She appears lean but strong with a slightly more defined build than the average woman. You can tell that she's trying to avoid your eyes, but you get the distinct impression that every time you take your eye off of her, she's watching you.

35675, Edylaen's Role Chapter 9

RoleChapter 9 Seeds of Destruction Added Fri May 27 17:40:11 2011 at level 44:It started with Nevaelle. If testing her capacity for "love" led to exposing her as a hypocrite, then the deep satisfaction Edylaen would feel would sate her for years. But Nevaelle was a strong spirit and with strong spirit comes strong conviction. A plan would need to be put in place to leave the Cardinal hopeless and forlorn, letting her know that everything she's ever fought for meant nothing. As Edylaen interacted with the world and found her place among the thieves of Galadon, making enemies became easy. Turning her enemies in upon themselves, therein lie the true challenge.
Her skills as a thief were second to none. With those skills, she set in motion plans to steal hope from each individual she came across. It wasn't enough to merely take a few belongings and run, but stealing the critical piece - the last whip of a desperate Nexun trying to fend off the villagers, the boat of a villager stranded across the sea, the potion of returning from a hunted Outlander - that robbed the individual of hope. When they knew death would come with swiftness, painful mercilessness, their despair would drive them to compromise themselves. Ruin someone, disgrace them, murder them, and they'd lose their identity, everything they believe in. Edylaen enjoyed putting plans into motion compromised every guild and cabal in Thera.
Nevaelle, whose spirit was indomitably strong and goodly, was the centerpiece. Years ago, when Edylaen first came to the continent, when Nevaelle first professed to show the young thief love, Edylaen only felt hatred towards the aspiring Acolyte. Love was the ultimate hypocrisy. Everyone had limits and Nevaelle professed none. Edylaen wanted to destroy that spirit, and she now had the connections and the spirit to do it. If enough disgraced souls blanketed Thera by Edylaen's hand, thereby showing that Nevaelle's "love" only made the world a worse place, the Cardinal would crumple.

RoleChapter 8 Appetite for Destruction Added Fri May 27 17:38:52 2011 at level 44:As Edylaen matured into a full grown adult, many things had come to pass. Through manipulation, seduction, and underhanded dealings, she became the second most elite member of the guild, just behind the Kingpin. She had grown accustomed to being thought of as a woman, so that is how she saw herself. While the scarred young boy she had once been would forever be a part of her, the true horror and memory of it would best be left suppressed. She had little fear of death and threats for nothing could compare to the sadistic nature of her childhood. Money was just a means to an end, and although powerful artifacts helped her survive and murder, they were just as easily thrown away as garbage.
What Edylaen truly enjoyed in life was the destruction of one's spirit. Making another compromise their morals and convictions for greed, selfishness, power, or hate showed them for what they were: hypocrites. Every shattered facade only served to show how flawed and corruptible a soul truly was, and it filled Edylaen with a greater sense of malignant self-satisfaction than any other activity in life. Maybe she was born to be such a wicked servant of darkness, maybe she was forged this way from trials and tribulations, maybe it was some dark deity's idea of a joke, but whatever the cause, the thief deft fingers had an insatiable appetite for destruction and every sentient being would be her meal.

RoleChapter 7 Corrupter of Goodly Souls Added Sat Apr 30 18:18:42 2011 at level 18:Edylaen was becoming comfortable in her skills as a thief. With great luck, she happened upon various armors and weapons to help her along the way. Perhaps the gods were smiling on her for once because they feared what would happen if she wasn't complacent. The sentiment would be foolish, though, because Edylaen would never grow complacent. She was learning the ways of thuggery and pickpocketry with ease. It would not be long until she would be able to rise to power on her own and start to bring down the centralized authorities in Thera.
One day, while adventuring in the Emerald Forest and honing her backstabbing skills on various wildlife, a powerful transmuter came upon her. The transmuter, named Nevaelle, fought for the Fortress and tried to convince Edylaen that her hunting of innocent creatures was evil. "It would be far better," she said, "to hunt the frost giants of the Frigid Wastelands."
Seeing an opportunity to destroy the beliefs of the feeble-minded wizard, Edylaen asked if all of the frost giants were evil. When Nevaelle replied that she thought so, Edylaen verbally pounced. "So, you would have no problem if we went to the wastelands and hunted down the little children of the frost giants, right?"
"Well, I guess they're evil, too," Nevaelle said, biting her lip.
"And while we're at it, let us find frost giant women in the throes of birthing their babes. We will slaughter them as well, slitting their throats and tossing their dead, lifeless corpses to the leopards. That is what you wish, right?" maliciously sniggered Edylaen.
"Umm... I'm certain that we could show them some mercy and all," said Nevaelle, not without a bit of unsurety in her voice. As the conversation continued on, Edylaen ruthlessly pounced on everything Nevaelle said until the subject came to love. Through some verbal acrobatics, she was able to get Nevaelle to say that she would love Edylaen unconditionally, though she would never aid in any wrong-doing. Edylaen grinned evilly at this. She would test the faith and beliefs of the wizard with every fiber of her being until it was as dark and corrupted as her own.

RoleChapter 6 Edylaen the Thief Added Sat Apr 30 18:04:11 2011 at level 18:On the new continent with a new feminine persona, Edylaen needed to find a way to slip through the cracks of society. Perhaps the lord's secret remained safe and no one would ever look for her, but she didn't want to leave that to chance. She exhausted the last of her funds getting to Hamsah, where she trekked long and arduously by her lonesome to Galadon. She never forgot the taste of power she felt when she murdered her malefactors or the thrill of stalking her kills in the manor. Offering one of the last relics to her past to a local thug in the northern parts of Galadon, Edylaen started to train in the ways of thievery. She wanted to feel that power again, not just against victims too shocked to know how to react, but against any who believed they grasped power tightly in the balls of their fists. She wanted to destroy everything beautiful and orderly because she knew there was nothing in this world that stayed innocent. Evil children of wealth and society grew up to be the lords and ladies. Greedy opportunists filled with regrets grew up to be Delaney's mother. And little children who remained ignorant of the ways authority and power could be abused... well, they grew up to be Edylaen.

RoleChapter 5 Flight of the Soiled Dove Added Sat Apr 30 18:02:52 2011 at level 18:His mother, his own flesh and blood, lay lifeless before him, slain by his hand. There was no pleasure in this act, just cold, stoic numbness. Realizing that trouble would follow shortly, he tried to think quickly. Since Delaney would be the only servant missing, they would naturally assume that he was the cause of this massacre. There would be evidence of a boy living in the manor, but he knew that detestable proclivities of the lord were somewhat of a shameful secret not likely to be shared with others. He bathed himself off as best as he could, grabbed several dresses from the lady's closet and stuffed them in a pack. He found a gold coins and some jewelry he could fence and he fled out the back door as the afternoon was heading into evening. Even for as remote as the manor was, he could barely make out a patrolling party on the horizon heading his way. Likely they couldn't see him, but he knew what they were there for. His mother's servant had gotten help. He smiled to himself when he realized what the servant would find when the party reached the foyer.
Delaney made his way to Seantryn Modan and assumed the identity of Edylaen, an anagram of his name. He made sure to frequent local taverns for gossip about his situation. As he predicted, authorities were searching for a young half-drow boy suspected of killing the lord and lady of the manor and all of its inhabitants. What was shocking, however, was that the Empress herself took an interest in the case. Apparently, the lord had been a distant cousin of hers and you didn't mess with royal family members, no matter how thin the blood between them was. With that news, Edylaen sought passage to the northern continents.

RoleChapter 4 The Subtle Taste of Power Added Sat Apr 30 18:00:47 2011 at level 18:All it took was a quick, sharp, forceful jab and the wooden steak slid its way between the lord's ribs and into his heart. Delaney sat astride his personal devil, arms akimbo, as he watched the life fade from his eyes. The manor lord was so shocked by the sudden action that he never screamed. As the feminized half-drow boy felt years of oppression start to evaporate, a new taste developed on the end of his tongue. It was curious, bitter and dark, but sweetly satisfying. He had felt the power for the first time in his life and it surged in his spirit. He knew of the lord's dress dagger locked in the large wardrobe in the corner of the room. He found the key on the lord's body, unlocked the wardrobe and retrieved the blade. From there, he stalked silently from room to room, slaughtering the inhabitants of the manor who watched but said nothing. For the most part, they were dispatched quietly with a slash to the throat and a jab to the heart. As he came to the lady's room, he paused just a moment as a wicked grin came across his face.
Delaney knocked lightly on the door and waited for an "enter!" before slowly opening the door. There he stood before the lady as she turned to see him. His dress, a frilly pink frock with endless rows of lace detail, was soaked in the blood of his victims. A wicked, murderous gleam sparkled in his eyes as he slightly crouched as if getting ready to pounce. The lady had only enough time to sharply intake breath in preparation of a scream when Delaney crossed fifteen feet of space and sank his dagger into her throat. To the tortured boy, this was the second most satisfying kill in his short, murderous career. From somewhere in the manor, he heard a woman's scream and that was enough to take him out of his revelry. He quickly peeled off the dress until he was just in a corset and hosiery and went downstairs to investigate the source of the scream. Standing in the foyer, gazing with horror at the bodies of two of the servants who had drowned in their own blood, stood Delaney's mother, Viselda. She saw him standing there, baptized in blood and started to shriek when the boy spoke the word, "Mother..." It took several moments for her to realize the fiend in front of her was her own flesh and blood. He looked like a young half-drow girl. Obviously, years of beauty treatments and his youth had softened his features a bit. "Delaney?" she asked incredulously. "You did this?"
The boy's expression grew colder as his mother spoke. Memory of her abandonment came flooding back. Even though she had merely been in the guest house on the lord's lands, he had only looked upon her from afar. "I have already sent my servant to fetch the sheriff," she said stiffly. "You won't get far, you little monster. I always knew you'd end up like your fath-" The rest of her words were cut off as Delaney lunged forward and buried his dagger in her heart.

RoleChapter 3 Indulgences Added Sat Apr 30 17:57:09 2011 at level 18:Things changed for the boy from that day forward. The hell he suffered through no child should ever have to experience. The purpose of his "alteration" became apparent as soon as he was healed. Delaney was dressed as a girl, often by the rough hands of the lady of the manor, and subjected to the unwanted indulgences of the lord. When he struggled or put up any resistance, which included even defiant glares, Delaney was beaten within an inch of his life and then strapped to his bed until he healed. The servants of the manor merely looked the other way as every carnal abuse was visited upon the helpless child.
Life continued in this manner for five years. On numerous occasions, Delaney tried to kill himself until the lord wised up and had all sharp instruments hidden from the boy. Eventually, he settled into a numb existence whereby he could escape his torture and depression by feeling nothing at all. It wasn't until Delaney's thirteenth year of age when a serendipitous happenstance occurred. While the human side of him provided him with a form of tragic adaptability to his situation, the drow side of him was cunning and devious. That side of his mind refused to give up hope, even when that hope had been freedom by death. One day while the lady vigorously abused his hair into the semblance of a coquettish style, the handle of the hairbrush broke. She cursed under her breath and then went to go find a servant who would fetch her another brush. A brilliant idea flashed in the boy's mind as he saw the sharp, broken brush handle. With deftness and grace favoring his father's heritage, Delaney grabbed the makeshift wooden stake and hid it in the folds of his dress. The missing handle remained unnoticed by the lady when she returned with a new brush. She finished getting him ready for another "visit" with the lord and then shuffled him off.

RoleChapter 2 Sins of the Mother Added Sat Apr 30 17:55:00 2011 at level 18:Given the nod of approval in appearance, the boy, corsetted and befrocked, was dragged away by servants to the basement. He tried to put up some fight, but any struggle was met with a violent sucker punch to the gut. In the hallway, he passed his mother who met eyes with him briefly and then looked away. Delaney was utterly dumbfounded as to why this was happening, and even more confused by the lack of intervention from his mother. When he reached the dark basement, he had enough time to see an odd table with thick leather straps in the middle of the room. The table had what looked like horse-riding stirrups. He forgot about his plight long enough to wonder about that oddity before everything went dark. One of the servants had hit him on the head with a blackjack.
Delaney awoke to a throbbing pain between his legs. He was in his own bed, but he found that he couldn't move his arms or legs. While the pain was an almost overpowering distraction, the young boy noticed his mother flitting about the room, humming to herself. He called out to her in a hoarse voice, but she ignored him. After several attempts, he convinced himself that she just couldn't hear him for some reason. His mother appeared to be packing her clothing and personal possessions into an old cloth sack. When she was done, she turned to her son, smiled bitterly and said, "You know, you've been a constant reminder of the horrible mistake I made nine years ago. It was a bother to take care of my little bastard, but I did it out of motherly duty. Now that this opportunity has come along, I no longer have to care about that. I'll be living in the guest house, but I'd prefer not to see you if I don't have to, so be sure to make yourself scarce." In a mixture of shock, heartbreak, and pain, Delaney passed out. It was the last time for a long while that he ever saw his mother up close.

RoleChapter 1 Guardian of my Shame Added Sat Apr 30 17:52:04 2011 at level 18:Edylaen's past holds many a secret that no one except herself and her gods will ever know. They include murdering her own mother, being repeatedly raped as a child, and, most shockingly, not actually being a woman.
The product of a one-night tryst between a seductive male drow and a lonely barmaid, Edylaen had the cards stacked against her from birth. Fleeing the humiliation of an interracial out-of-wedlock pregnancy, her mother left Arkham for the Seantryn Modan continent. Her mother, Viselda, gave birth to Edylaen: a beautiful half-drow baby boy whom she named Delaney. Viselda found work at a manor south of the Empress' city as a chambermaid. The lord of the manor insisted his help live at the house so they would be available any time of the day or night. This was a common practice of the area and since the pay was good enough, Viselda moved into the manor with her newborn child.
Until the age of eight, Delaney lived a normal, solitary life. He rarely saw the lord or lady of the manor, his mother tended to his needs when she was not working, and none of the other staff had children for him to play with. The lord of the manor was an austere gentleman who treated his servants as his lessers. Thus, he rarely, if ever, met with them on a personal basis. So, it was odd that one day Delaney was called into the lord's study. He was made to stand in front of the authoritarian figure with his hands at his sides. He wasn't allowed to speak, but every now and then, the lord gave him a command to turn this way or that. Delaney was unfamiliar with the looks he was receiving. He just assumed that he was in trouble for something, so he tried to be on his best behavior. At the lord's orders, a servant standing nearby in the room was told to bring the boy to the lady of the manor and to fetch the boy's mother. He was ushered into the lady's room, feeling vulnerable and more guilty than ever. He wondered what he had done.
The lord may have been austere, but the lady of the manor was downright cruel. She could never hide the utter contempt for the "unwashed filthy heathens" who worked for her husband. With Delaney in front of her, she sneered and stripped the boy of his clothes. Ashamed and suddenly afraid, the boy began to struggle, but a quicky stinging slap to his face brought subjugation and silent sobbing. His womanly oppressor, anticipating further rebellion, brought a servant into the room to hold Delaney still as she scooped up an outfit of feminine attire and dressed him up. Humiliated, he was presented to the lord who looked him over and gave his approval. The whole situation blindsided the 8 year old boy, but what happened next was truly horrific...
