Description

A tall, thin human stands before you. Two large eyes seem to emanate from a
sunken, gaunt face, jutted cheeks, a pointed chin and arched brows seem to
almost pierce the pale, sickly flesh of the figure. Piercing blue eyes rest
lazily in his skull, almost floating amongst the bone and flesh. A palpable
aura of power seems to hover over this disheveled figure. Yet, hunched
shoulders and slackened arms suggest a deformity or perhaps a burden. Silk
pure white cloth peeks through various armors that seem to come from the far
reaches of Thera itself.

Into the storm.

Through the sleepy haze a familiar voice cried out. Jolting him into
consciousness.

"Help! Tiria, Sufu, Yohnerk, Bigglespot are raiding the Cabal!"

It was the Maran. The call had become familiar since the Empire languished
north of Balator and the Scions appeared only in the darkest nights.
Herethon grew restless.They slew his Squires took the Orb and seemed to
grow with each passing day. Droves of gnomes, humans, dwarves and others
flooded to the Island. What balance they sought he could not understand.

As the days turned to years and seasoned turned his muscles from a spry
teenager to a middle-aged relic of the days of the Imperial horde he could
sense the end was near, and yet the Nexans rose, like the Blade or Shadow
sect, they became legions of Imperials.He felt his own restraint weakening.
showed no remorse, their pursuit of Balance was nothing more than
greed, their own desires for power.

Herethon saw past their pathetic guise. There was only one solution.
Strike at them, keep them off balance. Attack them, force them to cower
within their Island. To feed from their corpses, to cause panic and
confusion amongst their ranks. Beyond the Fortress, beyond the Maran.

With a powerful thrust of his wings he hurtled towards the coming storm,
entrails of a gnome hanging from his beak.

Chapter 5

Herethon struggles.

The portal ripped open bathing the combatants in a terrible white glow.
Preawnik fought toe to toe with the Emperor Zubei as they were gripped in a
struggle for life and death. A giant grizzly bear vaulted forward sinking
its claws into the dying Emperor. As the bear closed in for the final blow
the face of the felar morphed into the face of a human.The eyes were gashed
out, lips cracked and seeping blood. The mouth open as if screaming but no
sounds emerged.The bear halted its assault and stumbled backwards as if
struck by some force. The fur retreated, claws retracted, the snout
retreating from its softened visage. Herethon stood there trembling, for
what he saw was himself, bathed in a red aura that faded as death crept into
the battered corpse.

Gasping for breath Herethon fled, he turned into a vulture soaring high above
Thera, higher and higher, till the air became sparse and his wings grew
heavy. With one last push he vaulted to the highest heights he had ever
gone, bathed by the warm glow of the sun. Yet behind him dark clouds
gathered and he felt his own rage swell. He yearned to tear at this with his
peak, to rend them with his claws, to beat them with his fists. As he
lunged towards the clouds pecking and slashing maniacally the mists swirling
around him, he felt the clouds choke him, drawing his life from him. His
mind waned and he felt him losing control of his form. Wings became arms,
talons became soft and fleshy feet. He hurtled towards the ground, watching
specks become mountains, thin lines became rivers, he hurtled towards the
Fortress at an incredible rate... And then he woke up

Chapter 4

The Horizon

Bloodied, battered but alive. The Scions had laid siege to the Fortress.
Their various snares, spells and shapeshifting claws had done their damage
but the Squires spirit remained. As the sun crawled over the mountains and
their nightwalkers dispersed into the mist they fled into the darkness as
suddenly as they came.

Herethon stood there, trembling with anger, it gripped his bones and
shuddered down the lengths of his spine. Suddenly he felt the urge to fly,
casting aside his human form for that of the vulture he hurtled into the sky,
his feathery wings absorbing the rays of the sun as he drifted over Hamsah
Mutazz.Suddenly on the horizon a form appeared, haunting yet familiar.
Herethon felt the blazing heat spilling forth from this creature, even the
desert winds seem cool compared to the righteous fury of this beast. As the
phoenix passed over him he was awash with new purpose, that of a Maran.

He felt the clarion call beckon him to slay the darkness. To dive on prey at
any given moment, redemption was offered, but never taken. The Field
Marshall of the Elysium was right, no quarter. Ever.

The winters came and went as Herethon grew within the Fortress.He could
feel the strains of time and of the War weighing him down. He developed into
many wild creatures each with their own unique purpose.Whether it was the
sweet song of the nightingale or the baleful hiss of the vulture he came to
utilize each to battle the darkness.

As the vulture he learned to be opportunistic, soaring above the cities and
roads assailing any who he could find. With each killing strike he felt the
crimson splash upon his feathers seeping into his skin, even when he
transformed the blood was still stained on his human flesh. In his dreams
and huddled in the darkness he could feel demons claws grasping at his
taloned feet, scratching at his feathering and gnashing their teeth as he
sunk into the depths.

He grew embittered, it wasnt that he sought the blood of the Nexans, those
neutral in life, or even those that hunted the Conjurers and Paladins in the
Fortress, but he sought their removal. They hampered the war with the
constant battles that held no allegiances, they were a stain, not yet a
blight, but nothing of the highest pedigree. Yet, he continued his flight
diving towards the darkness wherever it reared its misshapen and grotesque
head, even if he was distracted.

And that was the end of his tenure as a Scribe.Methalos, son of Anthenos
father of Herethon had penned his last missive.A tale of caution and of
hope as he set forth towards the wastes.
He was to bring Light and charity to all beyond the known world, with him he
brought his pregnant wife, one dog, a small satchel of foodstuffs and water
to last for one week. The journey would be ardous, but
fulfilling, for along the path there would be many who would help such a
pious man reach his destination. But not all journeys proceed on placid
waters.The birth of Herethon came as they traversed across the sea
towards Arkham from the port city of Hamsah Mutazz. A long and ardous journey
even for the most seasoned traveller. Due to strong storms and the
incompetency of the captain the journey took two months too long.

They had reached the port of Arkham, disheveled, tired, hungry but spirited.
The charity of the monks there allowed them to eat well and regain their
strength. Methalos stayed in Arkham for several years tending
to the wounded adventurers that battled the skeletons and cult members deep
within the catacombs and crypts of the city. By this time Herethon had shown
little of his fathers interest in proselytizing for the Light and its Virtues

and instead fancied himself a swashbuckling adventurer battling pirates and
brigands across Thera.
role + After a few years in and around Arkham Methalos packed his families belonging
into a small cart donated by the order of Alain Corbet and pushed into the
forests. They travelled for what seems like weeks through dense forests,
open plains
and eventually settled where the two met.
role + As they began their new meager lives north of Arkham a strange twist of fate
wrought upon them the fury of the various groups of Thera. They had seen
bands of warriors patrolling the forests and droves of wildmen chasing them
back towards the paved roads.
They had seen wounded templar-knights with strange markings on their necks.
They had even seen the occassional knights of death cast a disparaging glance
at the camp, but not a whisper of trouble. But soon destruction would reign
down like the fury of the
angels.The Imperial Empire had set up a foward observation post just east
of the camp, building slit trenches and sharpening weapons. Soon the Seekers
of Balance joined them, and then they attacked, claiming a hatred for the
Light and a penchant for balance
they came to the camp and took Methalos, torturing him in the name of
equality, greed and Order.

Herethon flung himself towards the assailants only to be cast back several
times. In his final attempt he felt the crushing impact of a dense mace
against his body, the blows rained down and with each strike a crackling
noise like kindling in a fire
could be heard as the bones snapped.
role + With a last gasp Methalos gripped Herethon's ankle absorbing his greatest
burden being lifted from his broken form
