Description

A hulking mass of well muscled blue flesh stands before you. A large wide
nose dominates the center of his hard featured face, and his light blue hair
is cut close to his scalp. His armor is battered from use, but the weapons
at his sides are sharp and well cared for. He exhales loudly when he
breathes like the bellows from a forge, and an odor of blood and sweat
lingers about his body.However, despite his menacing features, his pale
blue eyes seem kind and gentle, and they scan his surroundings with a calm
assurance.

Jremulek's Last Name

Erenthell, the guildmaster of Voralian City, smiled encouragingly at the
big nervous looking storm giant who made his way into the guild.

"New to the guild?" he asked Jremulek politely.

Jremulek nodded his massive head in the affirmative.

"Well you'll just have to sign up here," Erenthell said as he pulled out
an old tattered book. "Just sign your name on the line," Erenthell
pointed to an empty space with a delicate finger.

Jremulek grasped the pen like a dagger and hunkered over the logbook.
Jremulek stabbed at the page forcefully, and just as it was about to
tear, Erenthell politley intervened, "Ahh you better let me do that,
lad," and snatched the pen from Jremulek's large hands.

Jremulek breathed a huge sigh of relief.

"Your name?" Erenthell asked, and looked up towards the giant.

"Jremulek," he replied in his deep bass voice.

"And your last name?"

Jremulek looked puzzled before stating that he did not have one.

"Ahh, but everyone has a surname, perhaps your's has just been lost. No
matter, many a time adventurer's without a last name make one up for
themselves. Usually it's something that they hold dear to their heart.
But you better think of one for yourself, it's always better to pick your
own than have it given to you!" Erenthell pointed to the drunken warrior
in the corner with vomit all over the front of his tunic. "How do you
think that guy go the name Markoko Spewtunic?"

Jremulek shivered at the thought, and then tilted his massive head and a
thoughtful expression came over his face, "You be sayin' sometimes it be
somethin' people hold close to their heart, eh?"

Erenthell nodded.

"Well be namin' me after me human father. Be namin' me Tangis'son."

Chapter 4

5 Years Later part 2

Tangis sighed sadly, he had grown very fond of Jremulek and had come to
think of him as a son, but the day had come as he had always known it
would, "You've not dishonored me, lad. Quite the opposite!"
"Then why do you leave me?" Jremulek questioned with dark and sad eyes.

"I've nothing left to teach you. It would be a disservice to those who
are in great need to keep you from them for much longer. When we get to
Galadon, I want you to seek out the Maran, they will teach you things
that I do not know and can never teach you."
"But I like being with you, Tangis. You're the best teacher I've ever
had," Jremulek argued.

"The Darkness grows strong, Jremulek, it grows stronger everyday. There
is a light in you, Jremulek, a light that burns hotter than a thousand
torches. You've been put her for a reason, and I shall not hold you back
any longer. I've never had a better student, Jremulek, be certain of
that. Let us enjoy these last few days together as we travel this road."

Jremulek nodded solemnly and the two men continued west down the road
with the rising sun shining warmly on their backs.

5 Years Later

In the crisp morning air a crack of a twig off to the side of the Eastern
Road caused Tangis' eyes to snap towards the sound. Jremulek's large blue
hands snapped tothe handles of his sheathed swords and drew them with practiced
ease. A moment later a savage yell screamed from the roadside and a band of
duergar raiders darted from the woods. The foul warriors, with wicked
looking axes held high, charged towards Jremulek and Tangis.

Tangis instintictively readied himself in a defensive stance so that he
could assess the deadly situation, and Jremulek instinctively bellowed a
blood curdling warcry and charged towards the assailants. Tangis cringed
fearfully for Jremulek's safety, they'd gone over these situations in
training time and time again, but it was clear to Tangis that Jremulek
would never have it in him to err on the side of caution. There was
something different about this giant, something that he had never
experienced with his past warrior apprentices. Unlike the other boys,
Tangis did not believe that Jremulek would ever turn in his swords for a
plowshare. There was a fire in this lad, a fire that burned for the War
against the darkness that was descending over Thera. Tangis felt that if
the champions of light were to ever burn away the darkness of the land,
there would be only bittersweet happiness in the heart of Jremulek.
Tangis was convinced that the lords put Jremulek in these lands for one
purpose, and without that purpose Jremulek would be a lost soul.

The duergars were taken slightly aback when the storm giant charged them,
this hadn't been in their plan. The duergar war party stood no chance.
Even though he was a little nauseated at the sight of the dismembered
duergar limbs and the spurting of their blood, Tangis' heart still
swelled a bit with pride. Jremulek moved with uncanny grace for a being
his size. It was almost as if he danced with the the duergars, and the
ringing of his giant weapons was the music to which he moved. When the
killing was done, Jremulek wiped down his swords as Tangis has trained
him to do, and resheathed his weapons.

Tangis walked over to him, never having left his original spot, and
looked him up and down admirably and said, "Jremulek, when we get to
Galadon we will be going our seperate ways."

Jremulek looked at his revered teacher with shock and answered with his
deep voice, "What have I done? How have I dishonored you."

The Failed Priest-Knight part 2

"Jremulek has problems with the code," Kerruk continued, "he has an
undying fire that burns deep in his belly. He doesn't take the time to
contemplate his actions. His first instinct is always to charge into
battle, without thinking of the consequences. He is impatient, and does
not meditate well."

"Sounds a bit like me in my youth," Tangis chuckled, but then pursed his
lips closed when Kerruk shot him an appraising glance.

"Those were my thoughts exactly. He cares litltle for rules and law. A
few marks against him in regards to the Paladin Code we could live with,
but he's just too bloodthirsty. Don't get me wrong, he's a very kind and
gentle lad and would never harm someone who is innocent, he just doesn't
have the makeup for a priest."

"I assume this is where I fit into your little scheme," Tangis said
teasingly.

"Aye, it is, Tangis. We want you to train him, we would be foolish to
think that he has no place in the war against the Darkness. As you can
see, he will make a brilliant warrior."

"That shield does indeed look ridiculous in his hands," mused Tangis.

"Indeed."

"All right, I'll take him," Tangis said as he rubbed his hands together
in anticipation.

"Teach him well, Tangis. Remember, the war is not only about swordplay
and domination over the darkness. The battle goes beyond the clang of
steel. Be fair, but be firm as I know you can be."

Chapter 1

The Failed Priest-Knight

The grizzled combat veteren, Tangis, made his way up the winding path to
the training fields of the religious warriors. He was not alarmed when a
young squire roused him from a slightly drunken stupor early that
morning. Tangis had been summoned by the knights before, usually to help
some struggling youngling with his footwork and blade strokes.

Tangis crested the hill that lead to the proving grounds and smiled to
himself when he saw a massive blue skinned storm giant running amok
amongst a squad of sparring partners. He slashed and smashed his way
through the battered men with a giant practice sword and shield. Tangis
marveled at how well he moved about the field. His footwork and
swordmanship were superb. He was slightly confused as to why he had been
summoned, clearly the teachers at this monestary knew how to train a man
in the art of war, as evidenced by the spectacle before him.

He wandered over to Kerruk, the man-at-arms of the monestary and said,
"You seem to be doing all right with the lads," and nodded to the storm
giant on the field and chuckled, "surely you don't need me to train some
limp wristed squire."

Kerruk gave a start and turned to facce Tangis, "Ahh Tangis, good to see
you old friend," and then turned his attention back to the battle on the
field.

"So where's the little squire that needs to be shown how to handle a
sword?" Tangis repeated.

"Huh? What do you mean?," Kerruk replied without taking his eyes from
the battle taking place before him.

Tangis was growing impatient, "I assume you summoned me for a reason!
I'm getting a little long in the tooth to hike my aching bones up to this
place. You want me to train a recruit, yes?"

"Ahhh yes, the recruit," Kerruk said with a sigh. "We do want you to
train someone. I think you'll be fond of him."

Tangis scanned the line of squires who were sitting on the grass watching
the giant take on the half dozen men and asked, "Well which one of them
is it? They all look like strong lads."

Kerruk responded woefully, "Oh indeed, Tangis, they're all fine boys, but
it's not one of them. It's him!" His finger stretched out and pointed
to the blue skinned beast hacking and slashing his way tirelessly on the
sparring field,
"We want you to train Jremulek."

Tangis' mouth dropped open in shock, "He doesn't need training! I've not
seen the others fight, but I'd wager he's the best of the bunch!"

"Oh indeed he is, old friend, and as you can clearly see combat isn't the
problem," Kerruk said with a wince as Jremulek drove off an attacker with
a vicious combination of blows that dropped the man to his knees. Even
though the weapons were of the non-lethal variety, the way Jremulek
wielded his practice sword, caused much bruising and pain upon the
"attackers".

"Clearly," Tangis said drily.
