Melememelem the Smiting Fist of the Tyrant, Empress of Thera

Description

Standing just over five feet tall, this black skinned woman is a bit
shorter than the usual dark-elf. But dark-elf she is, made obvious by
the typical elfin ears, the slender almost emaciated body and the ebon
dark skin and eyes topped by silvery white hair. Held back in a tight
pony tail, the hair pulls back on the face, giving the already smooth
skin a slightly taut look, an intensity that might not otherwise have
been there. Cloaked in various raiments, of obviously different make
and style, she doesn't - quite - pull off the look of wealth and power
she obviously seeks. Some weapons and religious artifacts can be seen
attached or adorning her person, giving her a somewhat martial visage.

Chapter 8

Imperial Politics

Her dealings with her subjects now seems to go well. She is not
foolish enough to believe that only an iron fist will succeed. The
carrot is needed as well, and so she ensures all are fit and well
clothed. So far none has done something needing harsh punishment,
but doubtless that time will come and she will not hesitate.
Melememelem also considers barring thieves from the Empire entirely.
Barring the guild in total. They provide nothing of value, in her
mind, and do nothing for her or the Empire. For now she bides her
time, but that day may come.

Finally she also ponders relations with the spire. While they somehow
live under the misblief that they are special, that they are somehow
exempt from the BloodOath, they are of course not. She has so far
allowed them to hold onto her Scales, but she has opened discussion
with the Council to hear their opinions of changing that, unless or
until the provost bends knee to her and accepts the spire's status as
subservient to the Empire. Time will tell what the council advises and
how she rules.

Chapter 7

Empress

Empress Melememelem. Melememelem, Empress. Empress of Thera.
Melememelem the Smiting Fist of the Tyrant, Empress of Thera.
Her destiny arrived as she knew it would, as she forced it to
by her own strength, by clawing it from the others who would
keep it from her. She does not tire of hearing herself hailed
as the ruler of the Empire, as Empress. She reflects on it
and on what has changed.

Surprisingly, the shadow lord and dread lord both held to their
words and cast their vote for her. These were the right votes
to be sure, but the gods do not guarantee wisdom in mortals,
only eventual death. The question of course was the war master
and what his machinations might have achieved. Nothing, it
seems. Which is as it should be.

Still, the irony is that having become Empress, she has retained
the war master despite earlier professing a preference for another,
at first because she knew that the gods saw enough in him to raise
him to the council, but more because she has spent more and more
time with him. She does not doubt he already plots against her,
desite his statement "I do not betray", but she feels secure enough
not to consider removing him for now. And as she has seen, he is
a skilled fighter, more than merely competent, and that is what
she needs in a leader of the blades.

On a more personal level she has found her new royal status much
to her liking in ways she had not anticipated. Up until now much
of her time and effort had been spent hunting and killing enemies
of the faith and the Empire. And she likes it, very much. It
pleases her to do so both because it improves her status with her
lord as well as inspire fear among other therans. But now she finds
herself no longer worried about how others may feel, for she is now
above them, indeed feels almost parental, albeit in a dark and very
strict way. She now spends significant time simply speaking to those
who have not sworn the BloodOath yet, cajoling them and displaying
herself as the benovolent and even magnanimous ruler of all Thera.
After all she says, if they submit and swear BloodOath to her Empire,
there will be peace, all living in the dark order of Civliziation.
She now seeks to spend her time equally bringing the lesson of death
and also bringing the message in other ways. She is a priestess after
all and must preach in more than one way.

Chapter 6

She is First - Part II

This is the reason she will refuse and show nothing but disdain for
those who seek the oath after 25 guildranks. Better if by the time one
is 20. Also, she is in no way concerned with what others may call
"honor" or "courage" or anything remotely connected to those. She
neither seeks nor shuns combat with many against one. She enjoys the
killing, and she does so herself because she has the strength, and
likes it. But she has no qualms doing it with others with her as well.
The enemy dies just the same. In this way she shows both her strength,
and also gives full rein to her greed, to take what she might envy from
those that oppose her.

The other area of course is her patron, the Voice of Tyranny Enlilth.
she has, in her mind at least, developed a strong bond with her master.
She has no qualms thinking of him that way as she has placed a wall in
her mind between the world of mortals, where she accepts none above her,
and the world of immortals, who are simply different beings with whom she
does not, would not, could not compete. She takes no pain to be above
the caterpillar, or slug, and as such must mortals seem to the gods. But
of course the difference is the Gods and mortals interact, and in fact
the gods derive some amount of power from mortals. More mortal followers,
more mortals impacting thera on their behalf, the greater the god becomes.
And her god must be greatest. Is greatest. She is not fool enough to think
she is his only follower, but she is and will be his most important, his
best, his most lethal, most fearsome, most devout and most entertaining.
They may not share all the same tastes, but they are of one mind on almost
all other things, and of a surety all things important. She sees it as her
duty to spread his word and power, by word and by example, as much as she
spreads the Empire. They are in fact intertwined in her mind, as she adopted
both nearly simultaneously.

Finally, she has decided that now that she is to take that final step to
the throne, she must think of how others think of her. She is not quite as
brash and defiant as she was when a youth, and has seen from her Lord's example
that sometimes the carrot works better than the stick. She will not become
simpering housewife cow, but she may be a bit more tolerant and perhaps even
show some humor (dark humor to be sure) around other citizens. Trust none, but
cajole them as necessary. They must fear her, but also respect her and perhaps
most important not dislike her, for her to achieve the final status.

She is First - Part I

Finally! There was a bit of loathing when she saw there was a
shadow lord, that there might be another to claim being first
and she merely second, yet again. But soon after she was named
High Priestess, which by itself meant she was first among all
her peers, but then the shadow lord showed his weakness took his
own life, leaving her as the only member of the Council, the
undisputed leader of the Empire. Becoming High Priestss has,
for the first time, made her feel secure in herself. While not
entirely dispelling her insecurity of being the "oh, how nice"
second place, she feels she has achieved something and shown
all, herself and everyone else, that she is in fact at the top.
This of course leaves the last and most important step, to the
throne itself. She craves this of course, and believes it is her
right and destiny. But it is more from the desire for power and
to have all she wants, her greed and lust, than because of her
more youthful self-doubt. She no longer worries - quite so much -
that she is seen as second place. Now she simply wants what she
has become accustomed to, primacy of place and power.

This comes in two areas. The Empire and taking the throne is one.
That is obvious. And she seeks it like the hated jaguar hunts its
prey. Tenacious and never stopping. She has very strong beliefs
on the Empire itself and how those within it should behave. She
often repeats the basic creed, submission or death. And they are
not merely words, she believes them to her core. This is tied in
to her self worth because if she were even for an instant to believe
there to be any other path in life, any other equally viable or
acceptable philosophy, it would call into question all she has done
and all she has said, making her no longer special, no longer the
enlightened one she knows herself to be. Having fully swallowed the
doctrine from soup to nuts she is bound now to follow it, and more,
to make others (by force, not because it is necessary but because it
brings pleasure) accept it as well. It is why she never travels with
those that are not already sworn to the Empire. Her Lord has said he
approves of this, though he might not be quite so rigid, and use some
of them at need, but so far she has resisted this, seeing it as a sign
of hypocrisy and weakness. Indeed, nothing infuriates her more than
hearing someone respond to being offered the oath with "Later, I have
to do this or that" before. They either lie and are likely scions in
hiding, or they are weak, trying to live a life of ease without being
named proudly as sworn to the Empire, free from harrassment perhaps
from some of the Empire's enemies.

A taste for blood - Part II

With each life she takes she takes a step toward her greater goals. To each she
tears from life she offers submission to Enlilth and the oath to the Empire. Why?
Because she is Enlilth's fist, his cutting blade, and all who do not submit to his
will are to be destroyed. But also because the Empire is HER Empire. She will be
High Priestess and Empress, and to offer to the Oath is to expand her own power.
As the books say, killing is to teach. They must learn her power. They must learn
the power and majesty of the Empire. They must learn the wisdom of the strength
of Enlilth. Once they do, they can be welcomed as her subjects, as citizens of her
Empire. There are some few who she will not extend the choice. Some few who simply
cannot or will not learn, and who are not fit for the Empire. Some prove to be
such over time, some are known from the start. But for most, she will extend the
chance to submit. If not, their only choice is death. And she enjoys that, very,
very, much.

For now she follows the guidance of her Lord. He needs his unholy fist to strike
terror and death into his enemies, and there are many of her age. At the same time
the Divine Sect, indeed the Empire, needs leadership. And she will not suffer
another to rise above her. The question then is to continue laying waste to those
around her, or to rise quickly, and don the mantles of High Priestess and then
Empress. As always the Lord Enlilth showed wisdom, saying there is no rush, no
need to haste impressing some guildmaster. He enjoys the wash of blood she has
brought almost as much as she has in the doing. Advance as may happen, but do not
seek speed. If another divine comes, she can deal with that then. For now, she should
continue to enjoy the sight of the boils and sores erupting on her foes. Their blood
burning with poison. Their eyes blackened by Enlilth's power. ENjoy the views, and
ensure the victims know no respite. That is her path for now.

A taste for blood - Part I

For some, it is love - ridiculous as that may be. For others it is food,
chocolate perhaps. For others still it is drink, fruits of the grape or
grain. The poor fools, they do not know, perhaps have not experienced the
finest of all: the dying gasps of your enemy. The taking of whatever you
want from the body. The complete and utter control, having just defeated
and killed one who would oppose you. It is not merely the taking of the
life itself, though that of course is pleasurable. It is the taking of their
essence, their spirit, their will. Oh, manay will speak strong sounding
words, proclaiming their strength and how they will repay in kind, how they
will never give up, etc. False words coming from false lips, uttered merely
to comfort themselves in their moment of greatest weakness, to cover over the
overwhelming envy and lust for the strength and power of the one who just
proved their weakness. They speak and speak and speak but the words are
ephemeral, as they are, and the corpse is solid, irrefutable proof that they
were overcome by someone stronger than they. This, this is the true finest
of all delights. And Melememelem has grown addicted to this, lusts for it,
yearns for more.

It was not always this way. If she had been asked while still in Teth Azaleth,
she surely would not have claimed any love for violence, beyond the usual of her
kind. Even after leaving she would have felt more likely to fight, but still not
necessarily sought it. But she and her God are a true match. A complementary
synergy that has awakened in her this keen desire. Her unyielding need for
success, to be first and not second, was channeled anew when the Tyrannical Voice
challenged the citizens to wash Thera in blood, to bring the new age in with
the flesh of our foes, promising reward to whomever did so the best. The very
thought of a competition renewed the vigor of her past days. A test! A test she
would not fail! She needs no reward, she needs no payment. She needs to be the
best. To be first among all. And so she began the hunt. Little did she know that
the last dying gasps of her enemies, the last moment watching the life drain from
the body, the light leaving the eyes, would be as music to her ears, wine to her
lips. More she craved. More. With each death her envy and lust grew, not for the
petty things - though she would have them, too - but for the ultimate prize, the
very lives standing against her.

Second Place - Part II

But on this day, unlike any before, the young intern acolyte standing behind
her, partially obscured by a curtain and skittish with the frenetic energy of
youth, slipped and bumped Melememelem. Everything sped up and simultaneously
slowed down for Melememelem, making her on the one hand unable to do anything
but on the other painfully aware of what happened, as though she could watch
the one second over a full hour. Just like that the chalice of red wine
hurtled toward the woman and her mate. Just like that they were covered in
blood red wine. Just like that the heavy gold goblet slammed into the woman's
head, crumpling her like a house of cards in a strong wind. And just like that
Melememelem's lofty goals were shattered, her future set in permanent mediocrity
at best.

Forever marked by the failure - hers to bear, fault or not - she could never
attain the things she had dreamed of, the things she deserves. Within hours
she was transferred, to the prison shrine. Tending prisoners and slaves.
She was shunned now, friend to none, worthless to their own plans whatever
they might be. Hardly much time passed at all before her entire being was
consumed with envy. Replaying the incident over and over in her head,
each time somehow ending differently and with her in triumph rather than
disgrace, she only returned to the present even angrier. More jealous of those
over whom she knows she should hold sway. She wants their wealth. She wants
their power. Most of all she wants their prestige, their station. She wants
to be first. Knowing it will now never happen in Teth Azaleth, she steels
herself and departs, determined that with a new start she can rise to the top,
where she belongs.

Chapter 1

Second Place - Part I

Second Place Melememelem, that's what her name should be. Second Place
Melememelem. How it infuriates her. How it burns inside her. How it
haunts her every moment, waking and dreaming. She is not irrational,
she is not unreasonable. There are always minor setbacks or little
failures or moments of less than perfection in any person's life. But
to be second, always.. Every. Single. Time. It makes her skin crawl.
Her hands shake with fury.

She is a twin. She has, or should I say had, a sister. A fifty second
older sister. Not even a full minute, but she was second, for life.
Every birthday, her name comes second. Every gift, hers comes second.
Walking? Second. Talking? Second. She cried when her sister fell to
an escaped cavefisher, but in her heart of hearts she shed not a one.
Now was her time. Finished were the days of elementary education, and
now finished were the days of always being Merreren's younger sister.

But the new days were if anything worse. Having finally allowed herself
to have expectations, to believe she would rise to the top, she now had
that much greater to fall. That much more pain. As the schooling began
in earnest, she was always the runner up. Second highest score on an
exam. Second quickest to summon a demon. Second to channel the power
of the divine and afflict a baby duerg slave. Second in her age group
to be welcomed into the Matron Mother's Young Priestess League. Second
to graduate from her class, despite doing so a year early. At every event
she would hear the same words congratulating someone else and then turn
to her and say "Oh, and you did well too, Melememelem, you're very good
too." Curse them and the horses they rode in on!

As has happened in the past and will undoubtedly happen again in the
future, a breaking point comes, a crisis, a turning point which either
breaks or tempers and hardens the person. Melememelem endured that moment
mere months after graduation from the cleric's school. She was, as all
junior priests are, posted to one of the city's outlying shrines, to
minister to the locals. And, as usual for her, she was sent to the second
most prestigious local shrine, used by the wealthy merchants, but not
the nobility. The day began as any other day. Nothing to signal that it
would change her life forever. Like any other day, she prepared to hear
the prayers of those nobles who chose to come by. Like any other day the
lay acolytes prepared the wines and waters, each for a different purpose,
to be sipped by a noble, depending on the desired divine intercession.
Like any other day she moved from supplicant to supplicant, speaking the
words and concentrating on the spirit of the divine.
