Description

Before you is a rugged looking dwarven male.
He stands a modest four and a half feet in
height and his body is thick giving him the
appearance of a tree stump. Large muscles
bulge under his tanned skin showing the
physical harvest of years of intense labour.
His face is round with a large forehead that
adorns many scars. The worst of which starts
just under his hairline and stretches down
across his left eye, down his cheek and
disappears into his chest length, auburn
beard. His eyes are a light blue colour that
compliment his golden-brown hair well.

Chapter 7

My Brother's Keeper

Rhyaldrin Mjolur was born to a dwarven clan near the
base of a large mountain in western Thera. This community
was "simple" by social standards and enjoyed a comfortable
lifestyle that was largely sheltered from the chaos of the
mainlands. That was until the discovery of gold in the
mines of the mountain. Young Rhyaldrin was horrified to
watch his community become enraged over the precious metals
in the mountain that sheltered them. Brother slew brother
in a greedy lust and countless disputes over claim and
profit arose. As the weeks turned to months, and then
years the basic foundation of the community was almost
completely different from that which Rhyaldarin was raised.
AS the once rich veins of the mountain grew dry the community
was left with the opposite problem: too little wealth. The
richest of them were gone, most to Akan, those were left
were left broken, defenseless and vulnerable to duergar
and orc raiding parties. Rhyaldrin knew something must be
done, and he went into the high reaches of the mountains
armed only with his hammer to seek divine aid.

He wandered for days before finding a spot where the clouds
cleared and the dark night time sky was visible. Frozen from
the below freezing temperatures Rhyaldrin slumped next to a
rock and bellowed to the Gods: "Divine Lords o' Thera why do
my brothers slay each other? Why have order and chaos caused
sufferin' so grand??" He sat and waited but there was no reply.
Feeling deserted he rose to his feet and wandered further up
the side of the mountain. He had every intent to die to the
frigid cold. Instead he found a warm cave, and he took solace
in the rocks and earth around him. He stayed there for many
months and watched the seaons change from cold and deadly to
warm and giving. Then to hot and prospering, then to cold
and decay again. While observing this he took in the animals
around him and noticed that none of them took any more than
they needed. While some were brutal and unforgiving, they
never sought the genocide of their prey. While others were
kind and giving (usually to their own kind) they never
put their own at risk out of weakness. Most importantly nothing
here was out of balance. Everything the creatures around him
did was purely for survival.

Two years older, his beard longer, and a bit wiser, Rhayldrin
returned to his village. He spread the word of moderation and
a life within the natural order. It took some doing but the
village returned to equilibrium. This earned Rhyaldrin the
title of "the Wise" and "the Brother's Keeper" amongst his peers.
He now walks the mainlands of Thera in hopes to bring the word
of balance and the wisdom of the seasons to the entire realm.

Chapter 6

A New Family, An Old Purpose

Weeks turned to months, and then years, as Rhyaldrin grew older,
and wiser he took note of the happenings around him. He had made
many friends in the Isle. Korost, an invoker was like a sister to
him. Their adventures have been fruitful along with another Invoker
known as Asgeirr (who Rhyaldrin keeps accidentally leading to his
death.). These new relationships coupled with his admiration for
Calbaseeti and Barkral have him feeling like he has a family again.
Rhyaldrin would give anything for the Isle, even his life.

Rhyaldrin continues his daily prayers to Amaranthe. He has been
ridiculed for his faith. The Outlanders (who he calls "Bloody tree
'uggers) have convinced him that the Goddess despises his kind
for what they do the earth. This has not affected his faith, as
he continues to praise the Seasonal Goddess for the strength he
found in those mountains so many years ago. Even though his prayers
fall on seemingly deaf ears he continues to worship the Goddess
and pay respects to the balance that governs Thera.

As he matures in battle prowess, blacksmithing skills, and in
understanding the ebb and flow of Theran life he has taken note
of the politics that dictate the direction Thera takes. While he
has found each important in their own right (at least when within
the balance) he has also found some of them to represent the worst
in Thera. He has taken note of the greedy bloodlust of the Imperials
and their less than honourable ways. The all emcompassing charity of
the Fortress and how it affects the natural order of Thera. The mind
numbing addictions that the Heralds peddle (thats not to say that he
doesn't enjoy the Inn, however), the ignorant destruction that the
Outlanders hold dear. The iron fist of the Tribunals and the narrow
sighted laws of Thera. The evil desires of the Scions of Eternal
Night and the strange generation old retalition against magic that
defines (and hinders) the Village. Where would Thera be without us?
He often wonders. While it is a thankless job it is one that he loves
for he loves his family, and the Gods, and the land that shelters
them. The older he gets the more steadfast he becomes. This is his
sole purpose for living.

Chapter 5

What Kind Of Man Are Ya, Son?

It was a cold, miserable day as Rhyaldrin led his group, consisting
of the invokers Korost and Asgeirr, through the knee deep know of
of the Jade Mountains. Blinded the dull sun upon the whitest of white
snow the stout dwarf slipped and fell down a deep ravine. "Farkin'
'ell!" He shouted, just as the avalanche was upon them. Asgeirr, a
hearty svirfnebli was crushed instantly and Korost was left crippled
and gasping her last breaths. Rhyaldrin on the other hand, was barely
scraped. To his horror he stood alone, in the frigid cold surrounded
by his dead comrades. With no way out, and limited food supplies
Rhyaldrin, morally defeated already, prepared himself for the end.
He stripped himself near naked and stood in the cold. His beard froze
stiff and his body ached. As he leaned on his mighty mithril warhammer
he began to feel warm, knowing the time was coming he spoke an age old
Dwarven death prayer: "Oi there do I see my father. 'Oi there do I
see my mother. Oi do I see my brothers an' my sisters. Oi i see tha
line o' my people back ta tha mountains o' our birth. They call ta me
ta take my place amongst them. Where tha brave live ferver!" As his
prayer subsided and nature took it's course he did see his family,
or at least his Father, who was lost during the chaos in his village
reaching for him. His soul flew through the planes, between life and
eternal death, but the Gods were not done with him. He reached his
pit within Galadon and apologized to his group mates. However he was
more disturbed about what he had seen. His father did not look
happy. He seemed eager, and tired.

And so days turned to weeks as Rhyaldrin continued along his path to
glory. As he has gone he has frequently dreamed of his Father (which
is something that never happened before the incident at Jade Mountains)
In these dreams he is back at his Village, the same one he helped
restore to balance so many years before, but this time the entire region
is aflame. His Father is there, his beard singed and his face beaten
(much in the same way he last saw him, when he was bludgeoned to death
by a power hungry overlord that had enslaved the village for his own
material gain). In his dream his Father walks with him through the
Village and tells him that he must avenge him. This doesn't sit well
with Rhyaldrin as he had the chance to kill the dwarf who had committed
this crime of greed but opted not to in order to set a better example
for the village. Vengeance is something that lives within the dwarves,
Rhyaldrin is no exception, and it is an emotion that he often fights
to keep at bay even with in his battles with the Battleragers, and
Empire. As Rhyaldrin, shamed and saddened, tries to find the worst to
explain himself his father always asks: "An' what kinda man are ya, son?
Are ya a good man? Are ya worthy o' our name an' our Goddess?" Rhyaldrin
searches himself for an answer, and the dream ends. The exact same, each
time.

Disturbed by how frequent the dreams are becoming Rhyaldrin has turned
to the Priestess Calbaseeti, who he loves dearly. Calbaseeti insists that
the dreams are probably just stress induced and that he should sleep and
pray more. Prayer was something that he had been neglecting lately so he
headed for the shrine of Lady Amaranthe, something he had never formally
done, mostly because of the OUtlanders convincing him that Amaranthe
would smite him down for his heritage. He braved the archway of the great
temple and was humbled by it's subtle power. Falling to his knees he
searched himself for words to a prayer and said: "You were with me in tha
mountains, tha spring o' my existance. Ya were tha sun upon my fields an'
tha rain tha' gave me life. Ya are with me now, in tha summer o' my life
as tha seeds o' my work grow tall an' strong. Ya are tha warmth that
sustains me. I pray now, that ya will be with me inta tha fall when it
comes time ta harvest, ta give o' myself fer those around me in tha hopes
o' a better world. Then, great Goddess I pray ya will be with me in tha
winter, when I return from where I came, ta return ta a cycle greater
tha anythin' in this world."

"What kind of man are ya, son?" He knew now what he would say: A
faithful one.

Chapter 3

The Death of a Friend

Rhyaldrin has been sleeping much better since he began praying
regularly in the shrine of Lady Amaranthe. He awoke one day to
find Kyaltaru drunk, clutching a dress. Fearing the worst he asked
where Calbaseeti was. The answer was one he dreaded, Calbaseeti
was gone. She had taken her own life and her husband claimed she
felt useless and under appreciated. This turn of events has
absolutely crushed Rhyaldrin leaving him significantly less
optomistic, joyful, and has even driven him from his much beloved
ale. He cannot understand why someone he cared so much for would
turn to such drastic measures, nor does he understand why she
didn't come to him for help. He often confided in her, and he
is confused why she did not do the same. He silently blames
Kyaltaru for whatever happened and has lost a lot of respect for
him over the last few weeks.

He took an audience with the Goddess Padwei to discuss what
happened. He feels as though his life is now entering the season
of fall. That things are becoming colder, the trees starting to
lose their leaves. Padwei told him to become the beacon of warmth
that Calbaseeti had been, not only to the Isle but the realms as
a whole. He is going to try, as he feels he owes her at least that
much. He's not sure if he can though, he hasn't felt this much
despair since that cold winter atop the mountain near his home.

Everywhere he goes in the Isle he smells his lost friend. When he
sleeps he dreams of her and awakes thinking he can almost still
hear her soft voice and joyous laugh. His depression has forced
him to become further involved with the struggle for balance as
it's a way to get his mind off the past.

Chapter 2

A New Era, An Old Legacy

Rhyaldrin made peace with himself with the help of the Goddess
Padwei and the Captain Neltouda. He came to understand the ebb
and flow of life and that there was no one to blame for the death
of Calbaseeti. From this Rhyaldrin came to respect, and even admire
Kyaltaru and mourned his death much like he did Calbaseeti's. After
once again sinking inward he began to spend more time in the Inn of
the Eternal Star where he befriended Shyrauk, Harel and was also
formally introduced to the Goddess Neltouda, the first Immortal he
had ever formally set eyes upon. Neltouda helped him to better
understand that his spirit, while wounded, was still an important
element to the success of the Isle and that his dwelling on the lost
was hindering the family that he still had. She encouraged him to
campaign for the vacant position of Rhyme of Resistance, but he
declined stating that the level of respect necessary to win the vote
isn't something you win with words.

The will of the Isle was manifested in the vote and Rhyaldrin and
his best friend Korost One-Feather were elected to the leadership of
the Isle. Rhyaldrin feels renewed by this new position and wishes
to be the same beacon of hope to his family that Calbaseeti once was.
He continues to pray for Amaranthe, and also prays to another Matron
of the Seasons, Lady Padwei. He feels that even while he is getting
older, and the autumn of his life is quickly approaching, that his
work have just begun. His goal is, as it always has been, to help
maintain the delicate balance that governs Thera.

Chapter 1

The Honoured Dead

Rhyaldrin has grown offically old by Dwarf standards. At 295 years
he feels that he has seen most of the world that he is supposed to
see and that "new" experiences will be increasingly rare. Rhyaldrin
feels like time has flown by, especially since he became Rhyme (he
just began his third consecutive term). He remembers those before him
and does his best to care for those who will replace him, but he is
still haunted by certain aspects of the past. The most prominent of
these concerns are whether his Father is proud of him, and his
accomplishments on behalf of the Mjolur family name. He still also
wonders why Calbaseeti chose death instead of life, and wishes to
speak with Lady Rayihn on the subject.

While the Isle has changed greatly over the years a few things have
stayed constant. Most notably his companion Korost, who also entered
her third term as Meter of Mind is still at his side. Korost and
Rhyaldrin often speak of their "honoured dead" as Rhyaldrin says.
Those who came before them and fell in the act of defending the
balance. While this act of respect is healthy for Rhyaldrin it has
also caused him to take note of how many of his own students (those
he has personally inducted) have fallen on their sword. This has
made him question his ability to choose new Seekers who are mentally
and spiritually strong enough to stand as a Seeker in the thankless,
never ending struggle for balance. He intends to approach an old
drinking partner, Lady Neltouda for advice as he figures a Captain
would know much of judging character for her crew.

With the arrival of some white to his signature thick beard Rhyaldrin
is showing the signs of age. Decreased core strength, less nimble
than in his youth, and even a bit crankier. One thing that hasn't
changed is his lust for battle and his hatred of the Village of Battle
Ragers. He holds his hundred victories on the battlefield as a symbol
pride for himself and the Mjolur family name. His only hope is for a
hundred more before he joins his Ancestors and honoured dead in the
halls of valor.
