Balten the Grand Master of Artistry, Cardinal of the Golden Sun

Description

Dressed in a mix of colors and styles, this aging half-elf seems
to have either no concept of fashion, or else the one he has is
sorely lacking consistency. Fur trimmed gloves, a cloak woven
with shiny metallic threads and lizard skin boots

A gleaming white mace, and a highly polished sword hang from his
belt alongside a a well cared for hamonica. The neck of what is
most likely a lute peaks out from a backpack slung loosely over
his shoulders.

His half-elven face is generally soft and smooth with many l
aughter lines can that can seen around the corners of his mouth.
His dusk brown eyes scan the surrounds and you within them, and
occasionally he flicks his blond bangs out of the way so he may
see better.

On his right arm can be seen the faintly glowing tattoo of a
Darkened Rose.

Do what you enjoy...or else just make funny hats
Added Wed Jun 3 11:25:30 2009 at level 1:

"Do you know why I've called you here?", the stodgy, old professor of
Invocation asked the young half-elven apprentice before him.

"You found out I accidently froze your cat, sir?", came the sheepish
reply.

"No. I...wait you did what?!", stopping himself from going down this
path, the teacher shakes his head and continues on. "No, I am
dissappointed to inform you you passed the recent exam, while young
Filban failed his."

Confusion flushes the apprentice's face for a moment. "But, that's
impossible. I.. I mean Filban really knows his cantrips. There must be
a mistake."

of papyrus with doodles, confused half-theories and a crude picture of
the professor riding a donkey backwards on it. The name 'Balten'
prominent at the top.

"But, sir...that's my exam.", came the reply with a tone of someone who
just had his hand caught in the cookie jar.

"It's your name, but we both know it's not your exam. You switched the
names, so Filban would pass...barely pass, you're not really that good at
this, but pass nonetheless. Why?"

Taking a deep breath of calm that only the truth can provide the young
man comes clean. "Filban's father is a beast, and threatened him if he
failed again. This was the only way to help him."

"What about helping him study?"

"Filban's as dumb as an orc with a helmet on backwards, sir."

"Ah yes...right." It was hard to decide to laugh with or throw iceshards
at the young man at times. "Well, Filban will be dealt with later. For
tampering with the tests we have no recourse but to remove you from this
school. Effective immediately."

The young apprentice thought of protesting, but really, there was nothing
to be done and he nodded resigned.

"I've spoken to your father already about this. He tells me you've been
previously removed from the warrior's academy for continuing to outfit
the practice dummies in funny hats. Also that you were asked to leave
the cloister after requesting to worship", the professor looks at his
notes to see if he has this right, "Koko the diety of backscratchers and
parrots?"

"Koko is a greatly underutilized religion, sir.", came the quick reply.

"Yes, well....be that as it may. Might I suggest you actually find
something you actually want to do and focus on that, instead of
bouncing around from joke to joke?"

This throws the young man. Do what you enjoy, he hadn't really thought
of that seriously. What would that be? At that moment, another thought
occured to him. "Sir, if I may? I'm pretty good at handwriting. How
did you know whose paper was whose?"

"Oh, that." He takes another sheet of papyrus out and hands it to the
young man. "You scribbled all over the margins. Looks like musical
notes, perhaps? You probably didn't even realize you were doing it. You
do it on everything."

"Do I? Yes, I suppose I do." Perhaps he learned something useful in
this school after all.

A chance encounter
Added Wed Jun 17 21:59:53 2009 at level 29:

As I travelled the land I was content to help out here
and there. Healing the wounded warriors fighting undead.
Singing some encouragement to a paladin. Stabbing the
odd bloodthirsty orc with a sword. It was all good
enough.

Then I met more people....

One in particular sticks in my mind.

"Want to kill orpahns with me?" It sounds like
such a simple question. Something like "Hey, want to
go grab an ale after work?" or "Spare a quarter?"

But this was no ordinary question. This was "Does this
make me look fat?" level of dangerous questions.

At first I thought it was a joke. I thought maybe one
of my friends was using a funny voice to impersonate
a dark elf. No, he wasn't joking.

Then I thought, maybe I'm being naive. Perhaps there
are angry, bloodthirsty orphans out there I just don't
know about. Maybe this is a just act.

It turns out most of the orphans just sat around playing
with dolls though...

I asked him why on Thera anyone would do anything like
that?

"For practice" came the reply with a tone hinting he
thought I was stupid for even asking such a question.

I tried to talk him out of it, but he was committed.

I tried to head there to reason with him, stop him
if need be. By the time I got there, he had two
other companions and I couldn't stop them alone.

Not only that, but I learned they were organized.
Places like the chasm and the empire actually
supported these people. I couldn't hope to stop
them all by myself.

To that end, I have submitted myself to become
an scribe to the Acolytes of the Golden Sun. Perhaps
there I can learn what I need to truly help those
under assault, and find the allies I need to help
turn the tide in this war.

For indeed, I've learned today we are at war.

Life as a Scwibe
Added Wed Jun 24 12:08:46 2009 at level 39:

"What's it like to be a Scwibe?", a little, blonde, doe-eyed girl all of
4 asks through the gap in her front teeth.

"Well, it's a lot of fun, we talk, and learn, and help people, but it's
not all fun and games you know", he pauses to tune the last string on his
harp, listening to the tiniest variation of tones between settings.
Every week for a while now he's been coming to the orphanage to play
songs, tell tales and generally check up on things. This week's
entertainment was briefly diverted when a teen thug from the Imperial
Lands showed up to pick on the orphans and found himself running around
trapped in his own personal fantasia instead.

Happy with the adjustments made, he strums a simple cord and breaths a
sigh of relief at the harmony. "There's a lot of smiling in the face of
adversity, talking to people who'd rather see you dead and trying to help
them see the light. Oh, and there's lots of fighting." As puncutation
the screaming bully runs headlong into a nearby doorjam in a failed
attempt to get out of nowhere.

"Fighting? Like... huwrting people?" The gathered children look on a mix
of shock, fear and confusion.

"Well," he pauses long enough to sing a short diddy that heals the
growing bruise on the bully's forehead which immediately clears up,
causing him to get up, and proceed to run off screaming in the opposite
direction, "it's more like trying to stop them from hurting other people.
They fight us so they don't have time to harm innocent people. It's a
necessary diversionary tactic."

"What's a tack-tick? Is that wike a bug?", the doe eyed girl asks, then
jumps sharply at the sound of startled poultry in the distance.
Apparently the bully found his way into the chicken coop.

"Kinda. It's like when you keep offering to share your toys with the boy
who keeps picking his nose, hoping he'll wash his hands before he gives
it back, but he never does.", laughter and a few 'ewww's puncuate the
response. "But you share the toys anyway because it's the right thing to
do."

"Oh.... okay!",she chirps happily, satisfied she understands. The first
rule of performance still holds true. Know your audience. "Um...mister
scwibe? Can you teach me to pway a song, pwease?", she finally seems to
have the courage to ask.

Balten can't help but smile at the innocence of it all. "Of course!
Whatever you desire, little princess. I'll teach you all a song! Any
song you want, name it." In the background, the kids see the local
bully, now covered in feathers runs headlong into the town fountain and
begins splashing about trying to flee his own personal prison.

With a mischevious glint in her eyes the girl watches the fountain and
asks, "Any song?"

He pauses only a moment as he hands the tuned lute over to the small
child, grins himself and replies, "Well...almost any song. Some should
probably wait until you're 6 or 7 first."

Talking to Jaragh - Part 1
Added Thu Jul 16 13:22:06 2009 at level 51:

Talking to Jaragh - Part 1

Three brave, young warriors, armor and weapons gleaming brilliantly in
the sunlight charged deep into the heart of the Imperial Lands. Whether
fueled by righteous fury, duty, or vengance was impossible to say, but it
did not matter to them. The youngest of the three held his weapon
tightly, perhaps nervously on his first raid against the Empire. He
heard but paid no head to the music coming from the orphanage as they
passed, but he felt more confident, sure and secure for doing so, even if
he didn't know why.

As they passed out of sight down the road that lay their quary, Balten
heard shifting of armor close behind him.

"There go today's real heroes of the Light", Jaragh, retired Knight of
Thera said approvingly. "They don't sit around singing fairy tales to
children."

Smiling, the new Acolyte of the Golden Sun found he wasn't as prone to
taking the Knight's bait as he used to be. "Well, they serve the Light
in their way, as I do in mine."

A minute's silence followed and the three returned, bruised and bloody,
down the road. Whether they had succeeded or not was not clear, but they
were alive, and again, they barely noticed that they felt healther, even
stronger as they passed by the orphanage they never cast a second glance
at.

Shaking his head, Jaragh, grumbled into his helmed "Thank the Light
they didn't fall in there."

"Yes, they're very strong."

"No thanks to you, of course.", the Knight continued his dissapproval.
"Here, there's something I want to show you."

Intruiged, Balten looked over at the small bundle the Knight removed from
his belt pouch. "I found this on the street. A cat was playing with it.
Thank the gods the children didn't find it. It's a finger." And sure
enough, he produces a shrivelled, scarred finger from the cloth.

"It's a pinky?", the Acoylte asked confused.

"It's a ritually desectrated pinkly!" The Knight claimed with total
sincerity.

"I....they even desecrate the pinkies?" It was all a bit jarring, but
sure enough, looking closely he could see little runes of darkness and
corruption, and the shrivelled, lifeless quality was more than you could
expect from simple decay. On the underside of the tip, a series of small
scars could be seen.

"A week ago three warriors like those entered the Lands to the north.
One fell inside, and their lich did this to their corpse." Silence hung
there for a moment out of respect for the loss, and the pinky.

"While they were in there, fighting liches, demons and darkness where
were you? When they died, where were you?"

"I'm sure I was helping the Light in my own way, as I always try to."

Talking to Jaragh - Part 2
Added Thu Jul 16 13:22:58 2009 at level 51:

Talking to Jaragh - Part 2

"Is that what you'd tell this corpse? You were off 'Helping the Light in
my own way'? Did you think it hurt when he was desecrated? Do you think
his soul felt it? Do you think he awoke and wondered what became of his
corpse? Do you think he's tormented his soul is out there making that
thing stronger? And you sit here, singing? What would you tell him
about his sacrifice?"

Balten was silent, unusual for him, a good long while before he answered.
"I'd probably tell he did his best, and that if he ever felt his fight
was worth while, this should confirm it and he should get back up and
make sure this happens to no one else...then I'd probably make fun of his
hair."

Sighing, Jaragh mutters something under his breath, no doubt not very
complementary.

At that moment the children come running into the room call "Balten,
Balten! Come play with us!"

Smiling at the retired knight as he passed he went with the kids to the
playground. "Alright, who's up for a game of dodgeball? Gather around
everyone for the Bagatelle of Bravado and Battaglia!" Cheers and hoots
from the children followed.

As his fingers played over his trusted piccolo his finger again scrapes
at a slight imperfection on the highest note causes another little scratch
right on the underside of the tip of his pinky.

While the children danced and played and the music went two thoughts came
into Balten's head.

First, yes, it did hurt, and no one should ever have to face that again.
These children deserve a better world to grow up in.

Second, honestly...what WAS up with my hair that day?

On the subject of Spheres
Added Fri Aug 14 12:35:08 2009 at level 51:

This role installment will be OOC because if I tried to do this in a
comedic, light-hearted, "Please god let me win a role contest" way it'd
take seven entries and I'd be smited constantly. I think I've decided at
this point actually explaining my character is more important than the
contest and so much has happened the stories can't keep up.

Balten is most definitely not well described as sphere poetry anymore.

Balten's role, initially, was simple. "He is willing to set himself
back, even cause himself some harm, to help others." I have always felt
that was true.

At level one, the only way I thought a bard could ever seriously do that
was through humor. By making people laugh, and feel lighter it was his
way of healing. Plus, he could always make fun of himself to get others
to laugh, thereby continuing the idea of putting himself at some degree
of harm/discomfort for others benefits. I looked at the sphere list, and
there was no sphere humor, or sphere named 'putting others before
yourself' so I picked one that involved using words to emotional
effect..i.e. poetry.

At level one, I really didn't know much about Acolyte philosophy, and
I sure as hell didn't know what altruism did.

Altruism might as well have been made with Balten's name on it. He can
take other people's pain onto himself. Frankly, it's all Balten can do to
keep from giggling every time he uses it. Other people walk away free
and healthy, and he goes off to rest it off, tell a few knock knock jokes
to pass the time, then gets back out there to find the next person who
needs help. If no one needs healing, he gets almost catanoic with boredom
because it's that enjoyable. Balten is alive when he's helping people,
and he's downright blissful when he can call altruism on them.

His words, and hence his poetry, were just tools to help people. But
now, he has much, much better tools at his disposal. His words and humor
are really much less of an impact in his life now, but I feel the
character is the same he always has been.

My only real regret in all this is I'd love to take Balten to another
level and maybe explore a religion with him. However only one religion
covers poetry and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with healing.
The ones that do have anything to do with healing make me think
I'd be wasting their time while they try to figure out why this sphere
poetry guy is talking to them.

If I had to pick a sphere today, with all this in mind, maybe it'd be
protection, or mercy, or healing, or vivimancy. They all hit it a little.
But if I had to pick one concept that summed up this character above all
else, one guiding symbol his life followed as I believe the
sphere system is supposed to be. It'd be simple. Sphere Martyrdom.

The Priestess of the Lady of the Darkened Rose
Added Wed Aug 26 15:22:30 2009 at level 51:

In the grand scheme of things, I always thought life was pretty simple
and manageable.

If youre hungry, I can give you food.

If youre wounded, I can heal you.

If youre depressed, I can make you laugh...or at least roll your eyes.

Simple. My life as an Acolyte has basically run through these three
scenarios repeatedly.

Souls? Immortality? Religion? Oh look, I think I hear the Elder
Prophet coming now. Hes religious, he can help you out.

What on Thera am I doing wearing a tattoo of a passed Goddess?

I could blame it on the priestess. That would be the easy way out.
Katrice has a nice, quiet, unassuming way of being so sure about
everything related to the Darkened Rose. Plus, she seems in peril, even
if she doesnt know it. The last follower of a Goddess even the Elder
Prophet didnt even know about . Theres a woman in need of a few good
jokes to brighten her day. I can do that, stand aside.

"Your Goddess no longer exists and youre afraid everything your life
has stood for will fade out with you forever? Well, have you heard the
one about the two orcs walking into the bar?"

...yeah...

Okay, humor is not useful here. Focus on healing then, right? She wants
to pass what she knows and believes on so shes not the last. I can take
that burden from her, learn everything, and then Im the last. Its a
simple transfer of suffering. I do that sort of thing all the time.

Except, why do I smile every time anyone asks me about the tattoo, and
happily tell them whatever I know?

Why do I keep asking for more about the Darkened Rose, even when Katrice
runs out of things to say?

Why do I imagine what it would have been like to sit in the Ladys
shrine, for weeks at a time if need be, just to have slight bit better
insight into how to protect the Light?

Why do I suddenly feel kinship with anyone who tells me about their own
God or Goddess, as if I understand?

Why am I laying awake in bed thinking any of this in the first place?

I feel a bigger part of something beyond just curing hunger, injuries and
despair. Taking care of the Light as those who came long before me have
done, and we do today means more than that. Theres a purpose to it all.
Im not sure I see that grand purpose as easy as I can see a frown, or a
scratch, but I see it now.

Has the scale always been this grand? Did everyone know about this
except me?

And now, the very powers that I had no real understanding of trust me to
guide others as the Cardinal of the Golden Sun. I look at all this and
I am not sure where to step next, or what to take refuge in, but somehow,
in all this I know if I keep trying as hard as I can, keep working with
those of the Light I can trust and push forward..it will all work out. I
believe that to my core now.

I think they call that....faith.
