Description

Tall and somewhat slim, this holy knight stands confidently before you.
Deep azure eyes look out upon the surroundings, their piercing nature
seeming to examine even the most minute details of the world around him.
The crisp Elven features of his face are framed regally by his pale
blonde hair, which flows loosely to his shoulders. Sharply pointed ears
protrude from his mane, leaving no doubt of his High-Elven heritage. A
diplomatic smile is fixed upon his lips, but his intense gaze and
prepared posture betray a more serious nature.

Chapter 4

Simple

Life was simple, once. Empty. Unsatisfying. But simple.

You see, not many years ago I was a farmer's son. A respectable life. One
which I never knew left my life without meaning. Until that one fateful
afternoon.

I was working in the field, watching the herd lazily graze at the edge of
a clearing. It was a beautiful day, and I took advantage as I rested in
the shade of the treeline.

Shouts broke the serenity of the afternoon. The clanging of sword against
shield. The screams of death.

I saw them quickly. The road was only a few dozen yards into the forest.
I could not see who was attacking whom, and had no idea why.. but before
I could decide what to do, my feet already pulled me into the fray.

It happened fast. When the dust settled, I was the only one left
standing. Two of the bandits fled back up the road. A half dozen guards
lay bleeding on the ground. The luckiest of them were moaning in agony.
The rest would never make another sound.

But then I heard something else. Was it sniffling? Crying? I followed the
sound to a fallen log. Behind it, a young boy. Perhaps my age, but a bit
slighter of build. Scared, but he quickly regained his composure. Wearing
fine silks and gold, he was clearly of the the noble families.

And that is the day when my life became much less simple.

Chapter 3

Purpose

The young boy, as I soon learned, was the Crown Prince of Ardalyn, the
nearest city to my father's farm. They thanked me for my actions. They
thanked my father, my mother. Knowing nothing else to do, they offered us
great sums of gold. We refused. We were farmers, not mercenaries after
all. When they offered more, I had one small request: Passage to Voralian
City.

My father, my mother were both speechless with shock. I doubt they would
believe that I surprised myself as the words flowed from my mouth. It
took me months to put it to words, but as I took action in that forest, I
felt for the first time.. whole. As if I was doing what I was born to do.
And there was no way I could go back to life on a farm. The simple life
was not one which I could live.

And so I travelled to Voralian City. I am not sure what called me to that
city. And I could never say at first what I intended to do. I just knew
that I needed to do.. something.

There were evil men in the world. And where there are evil men, there
must be good men to stand against them. That was my only thought, that my
life was one of purpose. And that was all I needed.

Chapter 2

Guild

I arrived in Voralian City without a plan. I was alone, but I felt at
home. For the first time, I felt satisfaction with my role in the world.

I wandered the streets for some time. Sure of my purpose, but questioning
my next action. I found myself drawn to the Temple. I spent many days
there. Reading the Holy texts. Speaking with the Knights and Priests who
passed through. We were never a greatly religious family, but my father
always taught me respect for each of the immortal Lords. I was drawn to
religion, and soaked up all the knowledge I could find. The texts of the
Warrior-Goddess Iunna particularly sparked my interest. The teachings of
the Incarnadine Spiral seemed meant for me, and me alone.

Still, though, I was only a boy wandering a big city. I think I always
knew what I would eventually become. But such a thought seemed above me.
Could a simple farmer's boy walk up to that Guild and request admittance?
Such a dream seemed absurd, but at the same time I could not deny that
spiritual pull.

Finally one warm afternoon, as I walked past the entrance to the
Paladin's Guild for the seventh or eight time, I stopped and stepped
inside.

Welcomed with open arms, it was as if they were waiting on me. At last, I
have found where I belong.

Chapter 1

Understanding?

When I made that fateful decision so many years ago, I was not sure where
my life would take me. I left home because I felt a calling to action. To
make a difference. To bring about change. I knew, even at an early age,
that apathy. That inaction was a failure of life. That good men take
action, and a lack of action in the face of evil is the greatest
betrayal.

Of course, in my youth I could not verbalize this thought. It was
instinct, I think, more than anything. But that has been my driving
thought since this new life began.
In my youth, I thought this was quite an epiphany. A spark of wisdom most
men never experience. Perhaps that is true, but I now know it is only the
beginning.

I spoke with a legend once, several years ago. Not just a legend, but the
Warrior-Goddess Iunna, herself. I knelt at her feet, and we shared words.

And she opened my eyes.

Approaching her with the confidance of my newfound purpose, I walked away
with more questions than answers. She asked me something simple. She
asked me of Peace. I admitted to her then that the concept was conflicted
to me. Every naive child knows that Peace is a beautiful thing. And every
Priest familiar with the Lady Iunna knows that she considers Peace the
ultimate failing.

I thought about this paradox a great deal. Several days were spent
meditating, doing little else. I am not so brazen as my youth, to claim I
understand everything. But I think I grow closer.

Peace. War. These are not merely terms to describe a battlefield. It is
the internal struggle. The drive that matters most. We cannot allow
ourselves to become complacent, to be at peace with the state of Thera,
and ourselves. We must always strive for better.

I think I understand. But I thought that once before. Perhaps I have only
yet scratched the surface....
