Heinte the Master of Nage Waza, Imperial Shadow

Description

Before you stands a lithe man heavily cloaked.
From his stature and build you would guess that he
human. Though the face lies in the shadow of his hood
so is hard to make out. Lean shoulders are heavily
strapped and a number of weapons cling tightly to his
back but all within easy grasp. The weapon at his belt
is a sharp looking dagger. No light shines from it and
dark red stains the blade. From beneath his cloak you can
just make out some armor. Not clean but as he moves it
makes little noise so perhaps is well maintained.

Chapter 5

Background

The sounds of the footsteps drew nearer. They sounded heavy and unsure.
As the door to his bedroom opened Heinte feigned sleep in the futile hope
that the man at the door would pass on by. But this was not too be. His
head felt the brunt of the attack as a heavy fist slammed into the side of
his face. The man shouted and screamed at Heinte in a drunken fury as the
fist continued to rain. Heinte tried to rise only to fall from the bed
unconscious a few moments later.

Hours or days later he awoke to the sound of the soothing voice of his mother.
He could only open his eyes marginally but that was enough. Heinte's once
beautiful mother was covered in cuts and bruises. She had born the brunt of
the initial assault. The apologies and words that this would never happen
again sounded hollow in his head. It was not the first time and it would
definitely not be the last. His own injuries he bear for he was young and
would recover, but that this could happen to his mother time and again made
his blood boil and his eyes cloud with red mist.

Another drunken city guard. How many had there been? In days gone by his
mother's looks were such that she could chose her customers. And only minor
nobles and rich merchants were allowed to her bed. But those days were gone
and she had to make coppers wherever she could. The drunken guards were the
worst. They always seemed to harbour a hatred of all when their blood mixed
with alcohol. Perhaps born of the frustration to having to serve in the city,
the lowest calling to any form of soldier.

As Heinte lay in the bed with his mothers gentle but bruised hands wiping some
of the blood from his forehead he knew that he would never allow this to happen
again. He could never make his mother change her ways. This was the only way
she knew how to make the coin that they so badly needed.
It was long weeks before Heinte regained his strength and his mother's bruises
faded enough that she was able to work again. And for a time after his life
was quiet once more, but it was not to last.

One night he awoke to his mother's cries. But this time he did not cover his
head and try to ignore them. This time he grabbed the long knife secreted under
his bed and ran to his mother's room leaping onto the back of her assailant
stabbing deep with the knife into his unprotected back.
But Heinte was still only young and his strength could not match that of the
attacker. He was flung headlong into the wall by a massively strong arm. With
a crunch his head connected the wall and blackness overwhelmed him.
When he came to he was in a small cell, the floor covered by straw covered with
excrement.

The trial came quickly and was over even quicker. His mother was poor and as a
hore had no defense to that of a city guard. She was sentenced to hang for the
assault of her child and Heinte was to be sent to the slave mines.
Heinte was forced to watch his mothers death, and it did not come easily. Her
neck did not snap as the floor opened beneath her and she struggled for countless
seconds as the noose drained her life.

The next few years Heinte endured the life of a slave. The work in the mines
made him stronger and he learnt skills from the other slaves. Among them he
learnt the art of hiding in the shadows and as his time drew on he learnt
patience. It was these skills that enabled Heinte to one day steal away from
the slave encampment and make his way free. With only the rags on his back
he made it to the nearest town where he slipped into the shadows and began
his new life.

Heinte the Assassin

Having not seen the sun more than a couple of times over the years he had
spent toiling in the mines it quickly become apparent to Heinte that he
was far more comfortable in the shadows. Gone were the days when he would
openly walk about in the daylight.
It was within the shadows that an assassin found him, admiring the skills
of one so young, and convinced the Galadon Guildmaster to take Heinte as
a student. Quickly Heinte realised the opportunity given to him and gave
himself fully to the training.
So it was that Heinte began to learn the ways of the assassin. In time he
forsook his father's name and took on his mother's maiden name Taysford in
respect of her and to not draw attention to his past so called crime.

Chapter 2

An Imperial Beginning

Silently Heinte crept up behind the guard. Darkness was beginning to fall
and Heinte knew that the guard's mind would be elsewhere likely thinking
of plans to fulfil once his shift finished in the coming hour. No doubt
off to some whore house thought Heinte in disgust, remembering his mother.
At this time the guard's thoughts were indeed anywhere but at the job at
hand and it was only when he felt the hand around his mouth that he
realised he was not alone. He struggled for only a moment as his life
drained from his quickly weakening body.
Heinte smiled in grim satisfaction as he withdrew his bloodied dagger
from the guard's back. How many of these pathetic fools had he killed
now? He was uncertain to be sure and now they were far beneath his
growing abilities. Yet he could still not shake his childhood memories
and every death still tasted sweet.
Just then out of the corner of his eye Heinte spotted movement back in
the shadows.
A voice whispered from out of the darkness.
'Be at ease friend, I have not come for your blood this night.'
The stranger removed his hood for a moment and Heinte recognised him as
the assassin who had introduced him to the Galadon Guildmaster so long
ago.
'Killing these city guards is hardly worthy of your skills now is it?
'You have come a long way since we first met yet you still seem to lack
some purpose.'
'Taking coin from your victims or the bounty rewards will only sustain
your interest for so long.'
The other than threw something at Heinte. As Heinte caught it he noticed
it was a darkened ring that reflected no light. On it was the insignia
of the Imperial Shadows.
'There is no force stronger than the Empire. And within you will find
meaning and you will find power that you perhaps knowingly or unknowingly
seek.'
'Think on this and seek me out when you are ready.'
With that the other drifted back into the shadows and was gone.

It took Heinte only a few short days to consider his current life and
as realisation took hold he knew where his place was. So he set out
to find the other. His life as an Imperial Shadow was about to begin.

Chapter 1

An Imperial Spy

The dwarf downed yet another ale and slammed his empty jug onto the
table. Around him his companions were getting restless and even the
woodland elf had stopped drinking. For a bard that was saying something.
In soft voices they finally came to an agreement and finalised their
plans.
The nexites though did not go unnoticed in the tavern as a hooded
figure eavesdropped on their conversation with great interest.
Oblivious to him the nexites prepared to move.
A gold coin quietly passed from the hooded figure to a young street
urchin who had come into the tavern seemingly to beg.
The urchin wandering back outside before making haste in the direction
of Imperial lands.
Heinte relaxed for a moment knowing that the Imperial Elders would be
well informed and prepared for the coming attack.
As the dwarf and the rest of the nexites left the tavern Heinte
gathered his cloak about himself and followed them to their destruction.
