Description

Your eye falls on the green haired elf who has caught your attention. He
looks youthful with that improbable hair braided tightly except for two side
locks, and yet still falling almost to his waist. The pulled back hair makes
his high forehead and bright green almond-shaped eyes even more pronounced.
His ears are pointed, though they sit flat against his head, and though his
face is lean, his cheekbones are broad and well defined. The flash of mocking
humor in those verdant eyes and the wry twist of his generous mouth remind
you of a most ebullient jester who is preparing to deliver a most witty
retort. A small jade cameo set in a gold-toned metal frame secures a light
cloak that sits rakishly over one shoulder. The armor that gleams from under
that ornamental cloak is cared for, and expertly worn. A sword he wears on a
leather belt looks too light to be dangerous, but the sheath it sits in looks
worn but serviceable. He is lithe, and moves with a thoughtless grace. A
shift in the light shifts cast of his skin, and while it had appeared milky
gold, a faint greenish hue is momentarily visible. Likewise, the carefree
demeanor that was so apparent before alters, so that the sharp nose and vivid
eyes combine with the pointed chin of his race to create a vision of
something predatory, rather than some intemperate rogue. Now does the heavily
used shield slung across his back take new meaning, as the light stride of
this elf looks less like the sprightly walk, and more like the introductory
steps to a more deadly dance.

Chapter 7

On: Heritage

I would have liked to have known my father, I believe. What stories of the
wilderness could he have shared? The endless blanket of bright stars
cascading down over the peaks of the jade mountains, the cold sleepless
nights of frigid blasts where one might trade his soul for a warm blanket and
a warm body to share it with, the ever present vigilance against intruders of
any race into the virgin landscapes of his home. I would have treasured any
of the tales greatly. My mother said he was a valiant and brave warrior,
that his presence was gentle but commanding, as if the sun and moon rose at
his bidding. It is a very romantic tale, but not one for our purposes here.
How she, an emissary from Darsylon, was to confront the secretive culture of
the jade elves and establish a rapport and possible trade connection, how she
was separated in a blinding blizzard from her fellows and nearly froze to
death during this time, and of a forbidden and passionate love that rose out
of her timely rescue. Far-fetched as it was with the culture barriers, it
goes to show that love knows no bounds, among other fanciful clichs. I will
never be convinced that his death was truly taken during a routine defense of
the mountains he knew like the back of his hand, but again, it is a tale for
another time.

My mother was nobility, of course, or she wouldnt have been trusted to such
important duties. Her house name is unimportant, as I myself will never carry
it, being the bastard child that I am. Her story you could probably tell
with your own voice as it is a tale of ordinary nobility, save for the
journey to the Jade Elves in which she lost her houses favor and status
therein. Life certainly changed upon her return. The nobles of Darsylon
have pleasant hearts, no doubt, but let them sense weakness and a tainting of
bloodlines interbred with 'The Untamed and Uncouth', and you will sense
malice where there was once warmth, and scorn where there was once praise.

Chapter 6

On: Mischievous Children with Green Hair

I was a playful scamp, with a sunny disposition. In a better world where
lineage wasn't of great import I'd have been loved by most, if not all of
those I came into contact with.My mother said that my laughter was like the
tinkling of bells, and that I lit the room when I smiled, which I was often
want to do. She had in her head the most romantic of ideas, the most
fanciful tales of where my life would take me. She was told by her closest
friends that the scorn of the court would pass, and life for me would be
normal, but once I found my voice, and started referring to myself as
'Ellyana's Bastard' in introduction to new strangers, she quickly realized
such was not the case. It is humorous what the young pick up on at their
early ages, I knew that my mother had done something naughty and was
constantly being punished, even if I didn't understand what it was. I'd like
to blame my escapades of naught and chicanery, then, on my mother who while
sheltering me from the cruelties of her fellows taught me that even adults
sometimes find themselves 'at the end of the switch' we'll say.It was nice
to have something in common with her while we shared our time together.I
truly became a mischievous hellion. I can offer no true excuses or apologies
for my childhood, I was a green haired devil. I delighted in the sneaky
escapades which led to countless frustrations on the parts of those I knew
were punishing my mother. From clever humorous pranks, to outright
belligerence in the face of the nobility, I was quickly becoming a force to
be reckoned with. Of course I had no idea at the time that I was proving all
of them true, of the mixing of blood, of the wildness and recklessness of my
father.I heard my mother weeping on countless nights, and I knew she was
troubled, I would rest my head in her lap and she would stroke my hair and
remember the few nights with my father.She had tried dying my hair, shaving
me bald, and whipping me endlessly, but there was no denying my father's
blood. I know why she did what she did, but it still saddens my heart.
Nothing as tragic as killing herself, mind you, but in a way she did kill a
large part of herself when she gave me up. I hold her no ill will and I pray
daily that she might find true happiness in her remaining years.

Chapter 5

On: Drilling Order into a Wild Soul

Here my tale begins to truly take form, and we set the events of my future
into play. I will admit that losing my mother, or, the conscious effort on
her part to lose me per say, had an ill effect on my disposition. Out of
sight, out of mind, seemed to be the theory behind my removal from the sight
of the court. My mother knew that were I to remain I would eventually ruin
the both of us, whereupon we would be cast away, and my mother had no
confidence in what friends she thought she could rely upon, nor her survival
skills in the world outside of the walls of Darsylon for the two of us.
Therefore, with great remorse she put my life into the hands of the guard.
At first, I was angry, but then determined. I would be the best guard
Darsylon had ever seen, I would see my mother and her nobles daily at the
side of the King, and I would proudly stand in service to the city itself,
even if it meant guarding the nobility. I was determined. That is to say, I
was determined until the reality of the situation caught up with me in that
my second day. Id say the Drill Captain was a fair man, but I'd be lying.
I was beaten, chastised, and the whipping boy of my group. I truly stuck out
like a sore thumb when my pale green skin turned purple. These are days I'm
not want to dwell upon, but I have never felt more hated, although looking
back I'd imagine they heard of my exploits and probably even received
payments from my victims to make sure I stayed miserable.

Here is where my life began to turn into a fanciful mess. I drilled, I
learned to fight, and I developed a backbone. Upon realizing that those last
particular two bits of know-how were going to get me exiled from the city, I
decided to cope in other ways. Now. Let it be said, I'm not proud of this
turn, but I must admit it was easy to find happiness when youre truly sauced
and have the delicate legs of a bewitching minx wrapped around your person.
Perhaps it wasn't true happiness, but there was no lack of common elven women
who knew of my 'dangerous' side and fancied a roll in the grass with me. I
must admit to having an exotic look and charm that I didn't hesitate to
flaunt. Life was finally beginning to look better, and regardless of the
pleas of my mother to calm it down, I was living full blast. That is, until
tragedy struck and I killed seventeen elves.

On: Responsibilities Shirked

I was too clever for my own good. I knew I wasn't liked, and I knew I had
pulled the most unimportant duty of the guard (in my eyes), sentry duty.
Little did I know I was put there because of my quick wit and sharp eyes to
pick out movement in the forest, which I did have above all others. Well, in
my sharp yet blind eyes, I knew that Darsylon hadn't been in danger for
centuries. There had been little to no activity from the underdark, and only
the most aged could recount the stories of the warring of the elves. Fate is
cruel, some are quick to say. But I have no one to blame but myself. I knew
the patterns of those I called 'the watchers of the watchers', they had their
own rounds nightly to make sure the sentries were manning their posts and
rounds.I had the shirking of my watch down to an exact science. It just so
happened, then, that at the time the alarms were sounded, albeit far too
late, I was tangled in the limbs of two sultry and soft daughters of the
nobility, sleeping soundly in a wine induced stupor.

After they managed to wake me, I threw on my clothes with all haste. I ran
out the door, and smelled the smoke, and saw the fires, all in my section of
patrol.It was the longest run of my life. The battle had been over for
several minutes, the corpses of our dead were lined in the street, the
corpses of their dead were nowhere to be seen. I knew very personally three
of the seventeen elves laying dead before me. I had never known true grief
or sorrow until that moment, as I fancied myself in love with them. With all
of them. I had done worse than fail in my duty, I had cost lives. In the
following weeks I knew despair, pain, failure, and grief. I expected death,
but I received exile. Whether it was because the lives of the lesser houses
weren't as important, or because the attack itself was a feint to draw
attention from the true crime of the ancient histories stolen from the palace
archives, I'm not certain. I didn't feel the floggings I received, and I
left the city with my head shorn and dressed in all black. No one was there
to see me off, and Im not certain that Ill ever know what happened to my
mother.

On: Finding Strength

All in all, it was a very sobering experience. I proved myself the weakest
of weak, the lowest of low. I proved the nobility right in their claims
against me. I proved the shallowness of my heart, the ugliness of my spirit.
And then, an awakening.Upon my wandering, I was approached by bandits.
After the encounter, I had horses and a sword. I sold a horse, and I donned
armor. I channeled my sorrow into battle, I charged recklessly into
situations that I should have fallen in. Perhaps I craved death. I began to
grow in confidence, I began to feign confidence and strength in situations
that I had no business walking into, and I was victorious in these. I began
to show a purpose, albeit a weak and possibly conceded purpose, I fought for
others, I protected them in their times of need where I had failed before.
There was true beauty in my task, be it in the smiles of those I aided, the
battles themselves in which I danced with and killed adversaries, or just the
sunset along the plains as I wandered the roads. I have found my calling, I
believe. I am to swear to the light to uphold the code and honor of the
Paladin. I will take vengeance upon my demons, and the true demons and
wickedness that haunt this world, they will burn in the fires of the deepest
hell if I have to go with them to contain them there. I will not give in to
the weaknesses of mortality, the lusts, the longings. I will steel my
resolve and find strength within myself, I will show this strength to others
and inspire them to take up arms, to live their lives. I will learn
everything I can to become the strongest: I will earn the reputation that
will cause others to hear my name and remark, 'Ah, yes. A feared foe and
treasured friend, that elf.' While I can only imagine what is said of me now.
One day Darsylon will know that I walked away on a road which lead me to
grow in strength of self, body, and mind. They will hear how my righteous
anger smites with holy vengeance the ne'er-do-wells of all the land. Through
my efforts Thera will better know the beauty of peace, and my strength will
be shown in righteous vengeance against the wicked.

On: New Beginnings and Repetition of History

I have started the path to redemption. I had attempted to walk it alone,
garnering the experiences learned within the guild of the Paladin and guiding
myself to ill misfortunes and bloody deaths. I met with several in combat,
and while dealing swift blows, I took several beatings.I had thought to
walk my path alone, and I thought this was how it would be indefinitely,
until I learned of Yean. Hearing her religion explained, in a tavern of all
places, opened my eyes to a whole new light of revelation. The powers of the
Paladin guild were already within me, but now that I have given them focus,
now that I feel her presence in everything I do, I am inspired and given much
confidence, I have a focus on which I pull my power from within, and I push
retribution upon the wicked with far more deadly accuracy then I had before.
The discussions I have with her, whether they are in my own head or in her
presence, inspire me to whole new levels as I see the beauty and strength of
every idea that she opens my eyes to. I have taken up painting as well,
though it is difficult to find the time unless I am truly inspired by a
happening, as I seem to be focusing only on expressing my innermost thoughts.


I have answered a call to arms by the Fortress of the Light. At the time I
have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I feel that I can gain strength
within myself through being bodily and spiritually close to like-minded
individuals with a singular goal of promoting the Light and burning the
impure in the fires of our vengeance. On the other, I have not met any I
feel comfortable with. A conversation I had with the Captain has left me
unsure as to whether or not this is the place I need to be, which is odd
considering it led to my being brought in to the Fortress. The Captain, no
fewer than two times, informed me that concepts of my faith were incorrect.
He claimed that there was no redemption for any, that the beauty of the light
is not able to inspire the wicked to doing better of themselves, and
attempting the path of redemption. Is not a large part of my own path
inspiring others to wish to seek knowledge of the Light and to know its
beauty, to strengthen themselves as they see me grow stronger and know that
anything is possible in this world? Why did the Captain tell me that we do
not learn from the mistakes of the past, that it was impossible to right past
wrongs through changing your life? Why was the first thing he said to me
about having odd hair and an odd hue to my skin? Why, when asked to listen to
my faith and come to know why I fight, did he say I needed to learn humility
and that I was being disrespectful by disagreeing with his views? A large
part of me leaving Darsylon was never fitting in, among other events. I have
started this path, it feels right, but I see many obstacles ahead, and most
have a familiar ring to them.

In the course of his life, Zaknifal has learned many things about himself and
the world around him. When mulling over the countless happenings, both
positive and negative, while taking communion in Yean's shrine, he has come
to the realization that every experience has the opportunity to impart
knowledge. Zaknifal hungrily dissects each encounter in his life trying to
find a beneficial piece of information that he did not have before. As the
teachings of Yean say, satisfaction is death. Those who feel they have
achieved enough, learned enough, or grown strong enough will soon stagnate
and become much less of themselves, much less of what they could have become.
in this state of mind, seeks to tackle lifes problems on his own,
looking only to Yean for guidance when he is perplexed about issues. As
such, he has run into several problems finding camaraderie with his brothers
and sisters in the Fortress. He spent a great deal of time feeling on the
outside looking in, or the black (or in this case green) sheep of the
fellowship. Zaknifal has learned the importance of tempering his pride and
dominating spirit when dealing with those of the Fortress that look down on
him. First Sarien, and currently Lortas and Aeinraz, he feels do not like
him one bit. However, as Maran he will strive to continue to inspire those
around him that they might learn to better themselves through combat and war,
and learn their own inner strengths by watching him constantly test his own.
