Landser Lunikoff the Legend of the Battlefield

Description

The Dwarf before you is shorter than most of his race.
You are struck by the scars which criss-cross every
visible inch of skin. The crags of healed wounds are
caked with grime, full of dirt and soot.

What is most notable, though, is how short his beard
is. It seems as if it had only recently been allowed to
grow.

I have been hired to translate
Added Mon Mar 16 11:21:49 2009 at level 1:

The scary Dwarf with the short beard has asked, nay, demanded that
I write some things in this notebook for him. His command of the common
tongue is limited.

He was raised in the Mines of Akan where, it seems, the old Dwarven
languages are kept alive. The Dwarves who work the deepest parts of the
mines keep their beards shorn short as the tunnels are very small and
encounters with terrible things are not uncommon.

He is angered now, though I am not sure about what. He is raging
about coins and banks. I am unsure what he is driving at. He has
broken the table at which I am sitting...

A Note on Speech
Added Wed Mar 18 21:20:06 2009 at level 18:

The dwarf thrust the bloodstained notebook at me and began to explain.

Let me begin at the beginning. I am a scribe and explorer by the name of
Regener Makael. I spent many years studying the Dwarves of Akan before
taking up residence in the city of Hamsah Mu'tazz. It was here that
this Dwarf approached me. He had sought long and hard for someone both
literate and conversant in his mother tongue. It seemed his rage had
gotten the better of the last scribe he hired.

The Dwarves of Akan speak mostly the common tongue and a dialect of
Dwarvish peculiar to their part of Thera. The Dwarven accent is well
known throughout the lands. However, what is little known is that the
Dwarves who work the deepest mineshafts speak a dialect wholly dissimilar
from what I will henceforth refer to has "High-Dwarfish."

It seems that speaking an uncommon tongue has caused this Dwarf,
by the name of Landser Lunikoff a bit of frustration, though I must
relate that his ability to learn has been rather promising. However,
due to both my interest in this project and the difficulty of
translating certain terms or concepts I plan on remaining on as his
biographer for the foreseeable future.

A Political Conspiracy?
Added Thu Mar 19 18:36:07 2009 at level 18:

Continuing my conversations with the Dwarf, he explained some rather
odd theories to me which, if true, shake the very foundations of
common political thought in Thera.

First and foremost, he claims the existence of an ancient text
entitled "The Protocols of the Elders of Scion" in which a
framework for total Theran domination is laid out by a group
of wizards long ago.

He claims to have seen an original copy in a Akanian location he
will not disclose, but swears that copies make the rounds of most
Dwarven societies and are widely regarded as fact.

Most notably, he says, the texts claim that the Scions of the
Eternal Night indeed do exist, and are, indeed, far older than
even those who believe in the sect ever thought possible.

It seems that the Scions created the Empire as a facade from
which they could more easily work behind. Additionally, the
creation of the Arbiters and eventually the Blood Tribunal
were also orchestrated by the Scions.

The schism between the Empire and Scion was, and here is where
it becomes difficult to follow, staged, but is real in the minds
of both Imperial Citizens and all but the highest ranking among
The Scions.
At this point in his explanation the Dwarf grew furiously
angry and began beating the walls of my office with his fists.
When he unsnapped his axe from his belt I fled and have not
been back since. I will give him a few days before I try to
draw out some more of this story.

A Relocation
Added Sun Mar 22 16:12:33 2009 at level 18:

It has still been some days, since I, increasingly reluctant
biographer, has seen the Dwarf Landser. However a runner from
The Sultan's (Heaven be unto him) Palace brought today a letter
to me.

It seems the Dwarf in question has relocated to Hamsah Mu'tazz and
has listed the address of my office as his permanent residence. Perhaps
now is the time to make the trip back and survey the damage.

A Surprising Return to My Office
Added Sun Mar 29 09:44:39 2009 at level 24:

It was finally, on this day, with great trepidation that I, Regener
Makael made the trek back to my office, unsure of what I would discover.

To my great surprise, the place was clean. Upon closer inspection I was
able to ascertain that several pieces of furniture had been hastily
repaired after apparently being smashed. Furthermore, my bookshelf was in
a such a state of disorganization that it brought a tear to my eye.

Most surprisingly, though, was the presence and appearance of my subject.
Upon my entrance, the Dwarf, who had apparently been reading a book of
mine, leapt to his feet and ran to me. Fearing the worst, I threw up my
hands to defend myself. Instead of a brutal assault, though, I was met
with a gigantic hug.

He began speaking rather quickly in his native tongue, and it took me
some moments to decipher what he was so excited about. Eventually
his words became clear and I realized that he was drawing my
attention to some new marking on his armor. I fear that I may have
fainted, for the next thing I knew, he was gently patting my cheek
as I came to wakefullness.

The markings on the armor...The Sultan Preserve Us. He had become
an Applicant to the Village of the Battleragers!

An Applicant's Time
Added Fri Apr 10 15:48:22 2009 at level 30:

Upon waking, the Dwarf insisted that I sit in a chair while he fixed
some tea. Now, it is known far and wide that the peoples of Akan are
masters of brewing, but it seems that those talents do not extend to
our delicate desert teas. It was all I could do to choke down the brew.

As I timidly sipped the awful brew I was regaled with tales of hunting
magi. It seems he had been searching for quite some time for some
blood to show Tahren, the Smith, when he was suddenly attacked in the
sewers of Galadon by a Necromancer, his golem, and a Transmuter.

Within seconds, he said, the Death-mage was felled and the other run
off. After that there were skirmishes here and there with a dark-knight
and even with a shapeshifter in the form of a mantis!

He had even, he claimed, spoken with a true Battlerager, a hero berserker
of the Village who had given his reccomendation to the Drillmaster.
It seems he does not take this lightly and will not rest until he
has a hut of his own.

A Visit to a Hut
Added Fri Apr 17 23:13:34 2009 at level 33:

It was with great trepidation that I donned the bloodstained cloak. With
a wink and a nod the Dwarf assured me that all would be okay. However, I
could not believe that I was about to set foot into the BattleRager Village.

He took me down the Eastern Road, a route I was quite familiar with,
but things took a strange turn when he dragged me off the hardpack and
into a path through the bushes. Oh, the ruins told a tale of the
great city of Ostalagiah. I shall visit the Sultan's library and
see what I can read of the place when it was a thriving, though evil,
metropolis.

He pulled me along until we stood at the foot of the great giant who
defends the Village. He spoke to the Dwarf, "Welcome, Great Warrior,"
he said. Then he turned his gaze to me and I have never feared so much
for my life. Now, I am not a frequenter of the magic shoppes, but I have
tasted a potion now and again, for pleasure, or for stamina. I swear
that the giant's nose flared at the sight of me and that he could smell
every flask I've ever unstoppered. I felt filthy with the "taint."

Finally the massive man looked away from me and turned his gaze back to
the East. We paused just past his back. The Dwarf assured me that we would
not venture far, just far enough for him to show me his hut. We pressed
on past dozens of them. Huts of all shapes and sizes. Some burrows
for svirfneblin. Others more like roosts, clearly for arials. He
brought me to his. It was made of stones mortared together with a
thick mixture of some Dwarven artisty. The roof was timbers.

For all the world it looked like the entrance to a mineshaft.

A Note on The Truth
Added Fri Apr 24 08:08:55 2009 at level 35:

I have noticed in my time with this Dwarf, acting as sort of a biographer,
I suppose it is time that we call this for what it is. I am
the biographer of this Dwarf. The task, then, falls to me of
investigating and explaining the ideosyncrasies of his character.

For example, I have noticed on more than one occasion that he is
not fully truthful, that he is even prone to the occasional
outright lie! This is in stark contrast to what we have always
believed about Dwarves and their word being their bond.
I hesitate to ask about such things, for though he is generally
good natured, he is given to fits of rage that threaten to bring
down the very walls.

Finally I simply asked, making sure that I had at least two means
of egress from the room. To my surprise he laughed and began to
explain. It all comes from the nature of the work carried out
deep, deep down in the mines.

The work is extremely dangerous and many Dwarves are killed each
year in tunnel collapses or run-ins with poisonous gases or even
cavefishers. Now, Dwarven culture demands fighting 'til the last
man stands and always returning for your fallen comrades.

However, deep there under the earth it is not always possible. So
many times have the deep miners screamed to their brothers,
trapped behind tons and tons of rock that "I will save you...
I will return for you" knowing it was not true, and knowing that
the trapped miners know it is untrue that these Dwarves have a
different relationship with "the truth" than do most other of
their kind.

It must be mentioned at this point that though they war savagely
with the Duergar, that Dwarves of Landser's ilk consider those
enemies to be their cousins first and their enemies second.

An Introduction to the Hierarchy of Hatred
Added Fri May 15 07:44:36 2009 at level 43:

As I had not seen him for a while, I sent word to the Dwarf to meet me
at my office in Hamsah Mu'Tazz, Praise the Sultan. Now, if you
think that meeting a Battlerager in combat is difficult, I suggest
you sometime try to arrange with one an interview.

To my surprise, he arrived after a few short days. After some of the
things which have happened in the past I made certain to have my new,
reinforced desk between me and the dwarf. The questions I had for him
would possibly pique his anger and I wanted to have some line of defense.

I cut quickly to the chase after he took his seat. I will admit that
there was more than one bead of sweat on my lip as I posed my first
(and what I assumed would be my last) question: "When the tales are
told by the fires in the taverns, it seems that you occasionally
show undue respect, or even fondness for certain of your foes. Have
you gone soft?"

Expecting a ferocious onslaught of swords, I was surprised when he
simply leaned back in his chair and set his face. "Let me explain,"
he began, in his thick accent, "There are mages and there are mages,
but there is a hierarchy to the hatred. There must be. Otherwise the
entire world would run like a bloody river down the drain of time."

Intrigued, I asked him to continue. He swigged some hard cider from
the stomach of a beast and began...

A note on his beard
Added Wed Jun 3 11:15:40 2009 at level 51:

I will take this moment to interject a brief note about the Dwarf.
It has been my hope that he we could finish our discussion of the
varying degrees of hatred within him, but it seems that this will
have to wait for another day. I will speak now of his beard.
For as long as I have known him he has kept his beard trimmed,
but when I saw him recently in Hamsah's Market Square it appeared
that he had let it grow some. He greeted me with a hug, then saw me
staring.

In his thick accent he explained that to celebrate the return of
Lord Thror he would grow his beard to the proper Dwarven length.
"No longer do I toil in the mines," he said, "no need have I of
a woman's whiskers!"

I smiled and he shouted, for all the market to hear, "Hail Thror,
Hail The Village!"

He then pumped my hand and strode toward the gate.
