Arriku Jast the Impure, Returning to Grace

Description

The elf before you is a darkened shadow compared to the fair
haired and light-eyed features common of her race. Her hair is
a thick curtain of raven's wing black hanging in a heavy,
perfectly straight curtain down her back. Long bangs fall into
her eyes, threatening to obscure her features. Peeking out from
behind them are almond shaped eyes of a deep sapphire. Nearly
black in color, when she faces the sun they sparkle like a
polished gemstone, irises surrounded by a ring of pure black.
Her skin is porcelain pale and unmarred by any scar or blemish.
Her demeanor is demure and reserved, her movements graceful and
her form willowy. She keeps her eyes lowered, generally
refusing to meet the gaze of anyone looking upon her, and she
rarely smiles. Upon her left hand is a platinum ring, its
silvery sheen slightly dimmed, yet its lack of luster looking
perfectly at home against her pale skin.

Walking with Grace
Added Sat Feb 14 07:38:29 2009 at level 11:

Her first memory is of her mother's disapproving gaze and sharp words.
Words meant to make her stronger, better, quicker, and, above all, more
graceful. "Perfection doesn't come easy, child. You must work for it. Don't
you want to be loved?"

The toddler took these words very seriously, a book balanced atop her
head, trying to walk with perfect posture even though she had only taken
her first steps the day before. She stumbled, fell, tried again, and fell again.
Scraping her knees, she began to cry, only to have her tears choked off by
a sharp slap. "Discipline, child! Concentrate! By the light of grace, you are
an ugly mess!" Falling and failing would quickly become Arriku's closest
friends. Wobbly, she got to her feet and tried again.

Twenty hard years later the elf had mastered the ability to walk with grace.
One foot in front of the other, as though you were walking a tight rope.
Head straight, shoulders back, eyes down. She had learned to keep her
mouth shut and only speak when spoken to. Her mother still regarded her
as a disgrace. "Child, I had great dreams and hopes for you, but as ugly and
graceless as you are, I fear the greatest thing you could hope for would be
to be a servant to the kings, not an entertainer." And so her mother began
to train her as a servant. "That's right, pour the tea slowly, don't spill a drop!"

A dream and a death
Added Sat Feb 14 07:39:51 2009 at level 11:

Arriku's father was an absent man, a well-respected paladin born of Darsylon.
He would stop at the home once per month, in between his missions of holy
work. Every time he came by he was kind to his shy, graceless daughter,
always bringing her gifts from all around the realm. Chocolate cake from
Arkham, rye bread from Seantryn Modan, seashells from the coastal plains,
she treasured every gift and kindness more than anything in her life. She
idolized him and was heartbroken beyond belief when she learned of his
death at the hands of the Empire. She was only sixty five when it happened,
a gangly teenager completely devastated. Her mother forbid her from
showing her grief, as a real lady would never let her emotional weakness
show.

Arriku couldn't have known, but her mother was slowly losing her mind. She
placed increasingly insane restrictions and rules on her daughter and without
a father or any other family, there was no one to protect her or save her. The
result was an exceptionally reserved and shy girl who hesitated before making
any movements. She walked like a ghost through Darsylon, avoiding eye
contact and direct conversation with anyone. One foot in front of the other,
back perfectly straight, eyes lowered.

A prince in Darsylon
Added Sat Feb 14 08:04:50 2009 at level 11:

It was during one of her trips running errands for her mother that she
met Dyniel. He was young and a cousin to the crown prince of Darsylon,
though Arriku did not learn that until much later. He was immediately
enchanted by her blue eyes and silky black hair and he loved her submissive,
differential personality. She tried to avoid him at first, but when she found
he had just signed up as a student in the Paladin's Guild, she turned to him
as only a lost child missing the father she idolized would. He seduced her
and she fell terribly in love with him, sneaking from her house while her mother
slept to meet with him in secret. Her mother had always called her father a
'distraction' and forbid Arriku from being in the presence of any man, save
for her errands, which she was under strict orders not to talk to anyone or
look at anyone.

On the morning of her one hundredth birthday, Arriku dressed in her best
blue dress, lacing its high neck and corset so tightly that she could barely
breath, the more uncomfortable the more perfect picture of beauty, as her
mother had told her. She spent extra time on her hair, gathered her list of
groceries from her mother, and slipped from the house to meet Dyniel. He
knew it was her birthday and she was praying he would propose to her. She'd
heard rumors of a royal wedding being arranged and had convinced herself
that she would be the bride.

She met him beneath the ironwoods, where he stood clutching a single
blue rose. She knelt before him, lowering her forehead nearly to the grassy
floor, her skirts perfectly spread around her and her long hair sliding over
her shoulders. "Arriku, I'm to be wed next week," he said simply, leaning
down to place the rose next to her cheek. She looked up, waiting, her eyes
luminous. His, however, had little but detachment. "She's beautiful, Arriku,
down to place the rose next to her cheek. She looked up, waiting, her eyes
luminous. His, however, had little but detachment. "She's beautiful, Arriku,

Arriku stared in shock before remembering her manners and lowering
her eyes. "I love you, Dyniel," she whispered. "Come, Arriku, I'm fourth in
line for the throne of Darsylon. I couldn't marry a servant," he responded,
trying to be gentle but failing. He shook his head and walked away, leaving
Arriku kneeling in the grass, bathed in sunshine, dry eyed because a graceful
lady does not weep.

Her first true steps
Added Sat Feb 14 08:34:12 2009 at level 11:

Shortly after that, her mother succumbed to her illness and died. Left
alone with nothing but her mother's faded wardrobe of silks and satins,
Arriku mourned the loss of a woman who had been her only family for
so many years. She wandered Darsylon for some time, trying to come
to terms with grief without tears, and she found herself before the
Paladin's guild. Memories of her father's gentle hugs and her lover's
caresses heavy on her mind, she took her first steps towards finding
her own path.

The Touch of Grace
Added Sat Mar 7 07:28:20 2009 at level 21:

Arriku stood at the base of a mountain, gazing up. The kindly
dwarf she'd asked directions from had pointed straight up.
"Yah, da Villager Goddess's hut be up. Right up, yah. Climb until
yer lungs gonna explode, then climb some more, yah. Hut to the
right o'at." A hut? Arriku struggled with that for a while, thinking
the dwarf had misunderstood her question. How could the lady of
beauty and grace sublime live in a hut? Arriku had pictured an
opulent mansion, a castle even! Still, she had come here to find
something to believe in. Doubting right off the bat would get her
no where.

And so she began to climb. Higher and higher, even though her
delicate fingers turned numb and her nose running in the chilling air.
Her lungs started to burn and her eyes began to tear. At one point
she knelt in the freezing ground, not certain she could continue on.
She looked up and saw a thin line of smoke not far off, and the roof
of a plain hut. "You can do this, Arriku. You have to," she whispered.
And so she got back on her feet and struggled the rest of the way up
the mountain, to its apex where she stood before a simple, cozy hut.
She brushed her tears away and took a deep breath of the freezing air.
Raising a hand to knock, her resolve faltered again. She sighed, angry
with herself, and forced herself to knock politely on the door. There
was hardly any hesitation before the Lady Yean herself appeared,
beckoning Arriku within her home.

Arriku entered, kneeling immediately and bringing her forehead to
the ground in respect before the Goddess. What happened next could
not have surprised her more. "Get up!" Yean exclaimed. "You don't
kneel here!" Frozen with fear, Arriku could not bring herself to rise.
Knowing she had erred grievously, she waited for her punishment. The
goddess's hand raised and Arriku flinched, imagining the slap of a
goddess to be far far worse than any punishment her mother had ever
dealt. Instead, two gentle fingers touched her under her chin, raising
her gaze. Something broke inside Arriku at the soft words and touch
of her Lady Grace and she knew she would be forever changed, and
forever one of Yean's.

The rest was simple in comparison. They spoke on her past and what
her future should be. She wanted to find her own strength, and she
knew it would come from her history. Finding that would take
knowledge, and with the blessings of the Lady Grace, Arriku set off to
learn.

Hope
Added Wed Apr 8 17:02:28 2009 at level 51:

"And which of a paladins virtues do you think will help you find
beauty, Arriku?" Yean asked, leveling her wise eyes on the elf
sitting meekly at the table beside her.

What an interesting question that was. Arriku discussed each of
the virtues, pausing when she came to the virtue of Hope. She was
no dreamer and her reality had never given her the chance to hope
or dream for anything better than what she was.

"Well, my Lady Grace, Hope certainly seems like a rather...well, a
worthless virtue. I mean, I could hope to find beauty, but that
all sounds rather silly. Especially considering your faith. A
priest of yours shouldnt hope things will happen, they should make
them happen." Yean agreed and Arriku felt a warm rush at the
raise.

And so Hope was silly. It made sense, really. Arrikus mother
had been very firm about crushing any dream shed ever had. No
reason to hope when you knew you were nothing better than a servant.
It was a waste of time and energy.

Yet...Arriku reasoned there had to be something about Hope that would
make it one of the sacred virtues. And it turned out to be Sarien
who taught her what it was.

Arriku made a point to meet with the Captain on her quest for
knowledge. She dearly wished to know about the life her father had
lead, and Sarien was someone she had idolized from the second shed
heard of him. An elf leading the Brigade. A brave paladin of the
light. Just like her father. He took the time to speak with her
for hours, and, much to Arrikus surprise, asked her to accompany
him on a walk the next time they saw each other. He was ever so
kind to her, something that left Arriku rather bewildered. And,
after several walks and hours of conversation, he told Arriku rather
frankly that he had feelings for her.

It was a dream. A whimsical, beautiful dream, the idea of someone
caring for her for what she was. The thought of being able to share
herself with someone. The idea that someone might care about what
made her happy. Someone who might wish to please her, instead of
the other way around. A partner who would not hurt her should she
err.

Retribution
Added Sun May 24 11:05:14 2009 at level 51:

"Just a little bit further, my love," Kale whispered in her ear. He'd
tied a silk scarf over her eyes and led her down a rough road, catching
her, as always, every time she stumbled. She laughed, clutching at his
hands, simply trusting him.

He turned her slightly and tugged the scarf off. "Now, open your eyes."

She did, staring in shock at the manor rising up before her. Built of
stone, easily large enough to hold multiple families, it sat on a huge
chunk of land, nestled in the mountains south of Galadon. Peeking behind
it, she could see a barracks and a servant's quarters, just as he'd
promised. She was speechless.

He wrapped his arms around her from behind, his lips near her ear. "All
ours, Mrs. Jast."

"Oh, Kale...this is too much," she whispered.

"No, it's hardly even what you deserve. Come on, I want to show you the
inside." He took her hand, leading her through the mansion. It was,
indeed, everything they had dreamed of. A huge hall to entertain and
dance in with a roaring fireplace, a lovely kitchen to cook, and her own
cellar to brew ale and wine. She followed him, still in shock, but it was
the spacious nursery with its ironwood crib that brought tears to her
eyes.

He kissed her tears away as he always did, pulling her to the last room,
their bedroom.

The next morning, he woke her gently as he dressed for battle. She begged
him to stay, but he refused. The only thing he could ever deny her his
need to war. The sun was shining as she stood in the doorway, watching
him walk away. She gazed to the north east, towards the Village, and
could see black clouds building on the horizon. Considering herself one
with him, the Gods had let her give some of her health to him. She had
thought he would use that health to spend more time with her. She had
been wrong, and a flicker of pain struck at her core. With Sarien, she
had realized that love had many stages, and everyone loved different things
with different levels of importance. She had left Sarien because
she knew she would never be as important to him as his war. Watching Kale
walk away, she couldn't help but be consumed by the same fear. It hurt,
worse, considering everything she had given up to be with him. There
wasn't anything she loved more than Kale, and with a sinking feeling, she
realized the words she'd spoken the first time he'd told her he loved her
were going to come true.

Retribution and Prices to Pay, continued
Added Sun May 24 11:06:41 2009 at level 51:

"Damn me, Kale, but you're going to break my heart."

The next few days were busy as she finished moving in. She was trying to
organize the layout for the orchard one morning, looking up at the cloudy
sky when the guard came to tell her the messenger had arrived. It was
about to storm, and from the way the lightning danced over the clouds and
the wind was kicking up, it was going to be a nasty one. The letter he
placed in her hands was blood streaked, dirty, and bent around the edges.
Her heart sank as a peal of thunder shook the ground beneath her feet.

Trembling, she didn't read past the second sentence, agony blinding and
buckling her knees in the middle of the courtyard.

Arriku,

I love you.

I have finally fallen. I died a soldiers death, in the heart of the
Scion's Chasm. It was the claws of Tameron that finally brought me down.

The hall I was building has been completed. It will be a fine place for
you to raise our child. I am sorry we could not have more.

I will cherish the time we spent together, while I wait for you to join
me at the boatman, and we can be together for eternity.

Your loving husband,
KJ

He asked me to scribe this to you as he took in his last breath. My
deepest condolences - Lohik

The storm let loose its fury, howling winds buffeting her grief. Rain
battered her and lightning struck close enough to send a charge through
her, but she did not notice any of it. She knelt, exposed to the elements,
challenging them to do their worst. The grief was too much, and instead
she turned towards anger. She had sacrificed so much for him, and in the
end, she couldn't deny the truth that he hadn't loved her as much as he
loved his precious war.

But then, there is always a price to pay for your sins. Yean had always
spoken of consequences. And Arriku was no stranger to harsh penalties.
From being locked in her mother's closet for a day because she'd spilled a
cup of tea to this, she knew she should have been better prepared to pay
the price. During her attempts to redeem him, many had told her she would
have to pay consequences. From her soul, her faith, her very light, she
had been willing to sacrifice. This price, however, was too much.

Once the clouds broke and the rain stopped she rose stiffly, brushed the
water from her skirts, and went back inside. Locking the door, she stood
for a long time looking at her stricken image in the mirror. Resting her
hand over the tiny spark of life inside her, she found yet another piece of
strength that she had never known, one that had no room for selfishness,
no room to avoid the penalties for your sins. One that belonged only to
her child. She promised herself that her child would not know retribution
as she had. This child would be free.

Redemption, part Three
Added Fri May 15 20:32:32 2009 at level 51:

I didnt beg him, though I wanted to. He pressed me for my hand in
marriage, which I had to refuse. I loved the goodness I could see within
him. The gentle man who held my hand and made me laugh. The warrior
willing and ready to fight for me despite the consequences. And that
part of him was who I appealed to.

Everyone said I was a fool. That I could not heal his darkness, that it
was something he and only he could do. They all assured me that he would
not even want it to be fixed, that all he was doing was using me. And I
will say I was not immune to the power of their doubts.

Still, I believed. He asked me again to marry him. I told him the
truth. The only way I could ever completely accept him was if he
controlled the darkness within, that he not cut down innocents in the
name of his war. That he have values and morals and reasons for his
violence. That he let his conscience out, let himself become fully
the man I loved so desperately.

And he refused. My heart broke.

I didnt give up. I asked again. For me, I thought he would do it. I
thought he would at least try.

He refused.

Suddenly, my inability to redeem him hurt much less than the fact that
he did not consider me worth at the very least trying. Yet, I have
never been afraid of him. I told him we could not be together then,
that I deserved more than he was willing to give. The words were hard
and my heart broke to say them, but I refused to back down. The anger
of his reaction, like a lightning bolt ready to destroy. And yet I was
not afraid. And he did not strike me. No, though I know he needed
somewhere to release his rage, I dont think taking it out against me
even occurred to him. This man was not his father. This man was better.

And then he left me. He...left...me. I felt empty, a piece of myself
gone. Were morals worth this pain? Yes, I knew right from wrong, and
I knew if I accepted the darkness within him I would not be the same
person.

He did not make me wait long. I think he felt as I did, that apart we
could not really live. He came to me promising he would try, vowing to
control his darkness, to live a cleaner life. All he asked in return was
my hand in marriage. After that, I could not have dreamed of saying no.

Redemption, continued.
Added Fri May 15 20:24:29 2009 at level 51:

it I realize that was the moment Sarien and I lost our chance forever.
Still, everyone has always said to me that the Gods control everything,
and I cannot deny that what happened next feels fated.

We spoke of my past, of my mother, of war, of blood, and of darkness.
Of a willingness to do horrible things in the name of that which we
believed. Myself, I knew that control and grace were much better means
of standing up for that which I cared about, but he knew neither of
these things. And still, though his words were harsh and pained, I
could see beneath him, see...something. Something worth saving, a good
man hidden beneath the front of darkness. And so I persevered.

The next time we spoke he told me what it was that truly caused his
darkness. It was raining, no, storming, jagged lightning rending the
sky, lighting his face as rain mingled with tears. Mine or his, its
hard to say now. All I know is that my heart ached with pain for him
and understanding. Abused at the hands of his father, his own mother
murdered before his eyes. Were his fathers actions so different than
my mothers? Was the only reason I wasnt bearing the same flaw on my
soul because of my heritage? I couldnt help it. I cared about, and
I connected with this man. I held his hand as he spoke, letting him
know without words that I was there for him. That a pain like this was
brought on by the past, but the future did not have to be that way.

And that was when he told me he loved me.

Something broke in me. Too late, I realized I hadnt been careful at
all. Id thrown myself headlong into this redemption effort, this
thing which I believed in, this man I had faith in. I hadnt thought
about the consequences of befriending him, hadnt put up any safeguards
against caring for him. My heart shivered with his words and I was
struck speechless by the wave of despair and hope that washed over me,
warring. It knocked me down, scoured me clean, and left me breathless.
Yes, I was in love. A cruel joke of fate, a stroke against all odds,
this man was my soul mate. This human, this embracer of darkness, was
my other half. All of my missing pieces fell together with brutal
clarity. The stakes of my redemption suddenly were much, much higher.

The path to redemption, dangerous and full of surprises
Added Fri May 15 20:11:10 2009 at level 51:

Some would look back on memories such as this and say 'That was
the day my life changed forever' but for me, it wasn't. It was just
another day and he was just another visitor stopping at the Inn for
a drink and a bit of hospitality. He stepped up near the bar, shaking
the rain from his hair, staring boldly at me. I chanced a look at him,
one he did not protest. Handsome, and young, and utterly human. And
so very damaged. I could see the darkness within him clearly, the
tears and traumas of his aura. So young to be so broken. And yet,
who was I to judge? Young and in many ways broken myself. His blue
eyes met mine and Fyeereth's words echoed in my head. 'What're you
gonna do when someone evil comes'n'ere, demandin' you serve 'em?'
And my demure response, 'I will do so dutifully.' I offered him tea,
of course, and he asked for an ale. Having taken Goroel's suggestion
to heart, I poured my complex experiment, grog flavored with apples
and cinnamon. The ratio was wrong, I knew it but I had never imbibed
on alcohol so I had no way of testing it truly. He thanked me, politely,
his blue eyes holding mine, and complimented me on it. Asked for
another. When that was finished, he bowed before me, bid me good day,
thanked me for my hospitality, and went back out into the rain.

I remember watching him leave, confused. He had been kind to me. Kinder
even than many of the light had been. Good manners, not a trace of his
damaged aura coming through in his demeanor.

He returned the next day, pulling up a chair at the table nearest to me
and asking for another ale. I poured, and this time we talked. Briefly,
yet again I was struck by his kindness. He spoke of his home, Udgaard,
a place I'd only ever known as something my mother threatened to dump me
in the middle of when I misbehaved. It sounded every bit as terrible a
place as she'd threatened.

And he came back the next day, and the next, and before I knew it I began
to look forward to his visits, and began to think of him as a friend.
And yet I was always aware of the tear in his aura, of darkness within
him that I never once saw yet could not deny. And that brought me
to thoughts of redemption. Would it be possible to heal that pain within
him? Could I do so with my own friendship? How could I not try? If
I could mend the rift within him, would that not be a true test of
strength?

And so I opened myself to him. He spoke of vengeance, how it was a
given right. I disagreed, telling him of Dyniel, my childhood lover
who had decided that duty and status were more important than my love.
I did not wish vengeance on him. Even if he had wronged me, I forgave.
I tried to teach Kale that, that forgiveness is a gift, and one that
is a pleasure to give. The look in his eye at my words...he stood
abruptly, asking me if I would accompany him behind the Inn, asking

And now Ill tell you of my demon. Again, brutal truth with you, when
the darkness within him and Sariens harsh words told me that I could
not befriend him, the rebel within me that my mother always locked in the
pitch black cellar to control was free, and she grabbed at my core, my
precious strength and demanded I take a stand. I thought I could redeem
him. No, I still believe I can and will. I had such plans to heal his
damaged aura, and none of them included losing my heart in the deal. I
see so much beauty in him, and so much pain and suffering. Something
worth saving. And I burn for him as a sinner relegated to the depths of
the nine hells. I am afraid he will consume me. Worse still, I am
afraid that I want him to.

I joined this guild to honor my father. I was so young then, and so very
stupid. I did not think of things like code, honor, good, evil. I took
these things for granted, thinking each of them easy. No matter how much
I might believe I can fix it, I know now evil is evil. If he does not let
me heal his aura and his soul, if he does not start living a clean life,
I can never be with him. It is simple fact. Desire is nothing compared
to the vows I have made, no matter how much it hurts. Yes, I could fall
in my guild. I could become shamed before all of my people. And in the
darkest place in my heart, where only you and I will ever know, I might
even be willing to do it except for the fact that I believe in him.

And still, my Lady Grace understands redemption. Does that grant me a
brief respite from tenet eleven of the Code? No, I wouldnt be so arrogant
as to believe that. But I must find a balance.

a small corner of it. The hand writing within is perfect, its
lettering tiny and neat with not a single ink drop spilled or word

Dear Journal,

Sarien gave me the idea to write in you. He keeps one himself, and I
can see its spine sticking out from beneath his side of my bed from
where I sit. I wonder how much longer it will stay there.

I hope you will not be offended, Journal, that I picked you to be the
object of my honesty. You see, I need someone to speak of this with
and I dont want anyone else to know of the hard truths I have to face.

So, out with it. Journal, I love two men.

And that brings me to these hard truths I so do not wish to face.

One is my angel. He is noble and brave, so proud and he has so much
reason to be so. The Captain of the Brigade. A noble, respected knight
of my guild. A warrior, and truthfully a better man than I think I will
ever deserve. He is everything I should dream of having and more.
Yet, the bitter truth, Journal? He is so very much so like my father.
And I am not so naive anymore as to believe that I was anything other
than drawn to him at first because he so resembles the father I never
had the chance to be close to. And yet I think he, too, loves the idea
of me more than who I am. I think he was drawn to me believing I would
be the perfect Captains wife, meek and pliable and willing to do
anything he wished. And yes, I was that, but I have changed. I have a
core of strength inside of me that I am only just discovering and it is
nothing like what he truly needs. And as we look beyond each others
ideal images to the person beneath, I feel our love grow brittle and
break apart, fading away like a dream I was childish to dream in the
first place. We both are grabbing desperately at the pieces, but I
feel them slipping through my fingertips.

Fortitude, continued

Fyeereth's words hit her back like a hammer. "Uh, Iktul wants you
t'know that he thinks a useful tool t'gauging people's personality's
how easy they fly into a huff."

Her spine stiffened. First a wave of anger washed over her,
followed closely by a wave of sadness. She schooled her voice to
calm, emotionless, and spoke only a few words before shutting her
door quietly and firmly. "I love the Inn and each of the Heralds,
but if mocking me and trying to cause me pain is what being a
Herald is, I'm going to have to rethink the value of my art."

Fortitude, she thought as tears streamed down her face, was never
ever relying on anyone but yourself.

Chapter 10

Fortitude
Added Sat Apr 11 06:09:39 2009 at level 51:

"And exactly what is it that you're good for?" Iktul's weaselly
voice and cruel eyes washed over her. Arriku looked again somewhat
expectantly at Fyeereth but the fela had eyes only for the petulant
human in front of them. He'd been trying to insult her for the
better part of an hour and she'd very firmly told Fyeereth that she
was as welcome within the Inn as anyone and would not be driven out.

Stiffly, she explained her art, strengthened by Sarien's warm
presence behind her. Again, Iktul mocked her. Arriku could not
understand why Fyeereth didn't do something about it. The Inn was
supposed to be a place where all were welcome, a place to find
friendship and warmth.

She thought back to her first conversation with Fyeereth. The fela
asked her what she would do with patrons of darkness, when someone
she hated asked her to pour tea. Schooling her face to show none
of the turbulent emotion she was feeling, Arriku pour Iktul's tea
without spilling a drop, refusing to flinch when he claimed she had.

Friendship. She'd wanted so badly for Fyeereth to be her friend.
This woman was someone for her to look up to. The High Herald, a
glowing woman with a laugh that drew people to her like moths to a
flame. Again, she waited for Fyeereth to control her lover's manners
better and again she was disappointed.

With the next barb, her control snapped and with it her vow. "It
seems I was wrong, lady," she said quietly to Fyeereth, taking
Sarien's hand and walking away from the Inn she loved so very much.

They walked for a while, Arriku's sadness and frustration boiling
within her. Fyeereth loved that man. Sarien said it wasn't true
love but how would he know? What was to say their love was any
different? Could you truly lose yourself, your morals, the very
respect you had for your kin over a lover? The very thought
horrified her. Finally, Sarien took her hand and tugged her a
bit. "Let's go back, it's where you want to be."

Dreading facing Iktul again, she went back to the Inn. Sarien, in
a show of love that warmed her down to her toes, managed to catch
Iktul's attention away from Arriku, and she found herself alone with
Fyeereth. And that was when the friendship came out. Fyeereth
asked how she had been, how she'd met Sarien. She was warm and
wonderful and in that moment something Arriku idolized. She found
herself talking about everything, so badly in need of a friend and
a shoulder to lean on.

And then Iktul returned with his sharp words. The change in
Fyeereth was palpable. She was a completely different woman in
his presence. But Arriku knew, she made a decision to be that
way. And Arriku knew she could make a decision not to be a part
of it. She closed her ears to Iktul and turned away, going back to
her small room at the Inn.

Faith, continued
Added Thu Apr 9 17:02:39 2009 at level 51:

She showed him to her simple quarters at the Inn and excused herself to
dress. Staring in the mirror, she brushed her hair a thousand strokes,
trying to ignore the fear in her eyes. Dressed in her best kimono, a
sapphire blue silk confection that her father had brought her from Hamsah
Mutazz, she returned to her room to find Sarien sleeping lightly in her
bed.

Faith, she thought, swallowing the surge of unworthiness that threatened
to drown her. She made her way to the bed, where Sarien murmured
something about love in his sleep and instinctively folded her in his
arms.

Faith, she decided, was much more dangerous than hope. Much more powerful.
And with that fading thought, she fell asleep with her head against his
chest, listening to the steady sound of his heartbeat. She dreamed of
white roses and sunshine. Maybe faith could help her find beauty after
all...

Faith
Added Thu Apr 9 17:01:42 2009 at level 51:

"Lady Padwei, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for agreeing;ROle + to perform the ceremony. It is an honor beyond words."

"Of course, Arriku. How are you?"

"Lady? I am well, of course. I cannot complain. Honestly...terrified."

And Arriku found herself pouring her heart out to the Lady. She listened
so intently and gently, Arriku found it impossible not to say her true
feelings. Something told her she had no need to fear any wrath from
Padwei.

But it became clear very quickly that Padwei and Arriku were two very
opposite people. Padwei spoke of freedom, of risk, of enjoying today
and not worrying about its consequences. She spoke of loving without
hesitation and could not fathom why Arriku was afraid. She believed
in following your instincts, and trusting without reservation.

Days later, she and Sarien were taking one of their usual walks. Beneath
the shady trees, moonlight dappled them both, giving everything a romantic,
surreal glow. He held her hand and sighed regretfully. "I must rest,
Arriku." She knew it was true, she could see the exhaustion in his eyes
and felt immediately guilty for taking up so much of his time. They walked
back towards the Inn when Sarien stopped. "I sleep within the Ruin of my
Lady, Arriku. Youre taking me in the wrong direction." Flustered, she
stammered that she thought he wouldnt mind the safety of the Inn. "You
want me to stay with you tonight, then?" hed asked, his tone mild but
his eyes warm upon her.

Faith, she thought, returning his gaze. When Yean had asked her which
virtue would help her find beauty, faith hadnt been high on her list.
Reasonably, it was very similar to hope. She could believe she would find
beauty, but really what did that get? Nothing. And yetfaith was one of
the sacred virtues nonetheless. Arriku believed in Yean, but Yean had
also made it very clear that Arriku needed to find strength within
herself, not within her goddess. But even so, Arriku had often found
herself reaching beyond what she would normally have done because no
priestess of Yean would be weak, or led around, or pushed, or sheltered.
She would stand up for herself. Her very faith in her Lady Grace made
Arriku stronger in that manner alone. And, she thought, a priestess of
beauty would not live within a plain comfort zone. She would take the
opportunity before her even though it terrified her to the point where
her toes curled in her boots. She would accept his offer even though her
every instinct screamed at her for selfishly denying him his repose by
his Ladys ghost. Later, she knew there would be hell to pay.
Remembering Lady Padweis words, she wouldnt think about tomorrow, sure
to come about with a cold bed alone and an aching heart in the morning.

Hope, continued
Added Wed Apr 8 17:03:11 2009 at level 51:

But...Arriku knew, deep down, that a foolish dream was all it could
be. Everyone she had ever loved had left her. Every single one of
them had hurt her. Her mother with her harsh slaps and harsher
punishments. Her absent father. Her elven lover, Dyniel, who had
disdained her common blood and used her for nothing more than his
own pleasure. Sarien had responsibilities, a noble mission that
Arriku knew she was unworthy to distract him from. Further, why
would he want someone such as her, damaged and terrified and so
very common.

He spoke of marrying her, which made her heart soar even as she
thought she might choke on the fear it all inspired within her.
And in the end, she realized that was how she defined hope: it
was fear. If she didnt hope that Sarien might truly see her as
his beloved, if she didnt dream of a life where she could open her
heart and not have it broken...then she wouldnt have been so damned
afraid of losing it all.

Hope, she decided, was a silly, terrible, dangerous thing indeed.
No wonder paladins were tasked with the duty of guarding it so very
carefully.

A reason to live
Added Wed Jun 3 17:28:20 2009 at level 51:

Eight months after she became a widow, Arriku gave birth to twins.
There is little to say of the time other than she spent it isolated
at the manor.

The first child, eldest by only a few scant minutes, is a girl that
she named Hanna. Hanna takes after her father in both look and
desire to fight, and Arriku finds it nearly impossible to keep up
with the little girls energy and spirit. For her tenth birthday
she demanded a pair of practice swords, and Arriku knew shed go
the way of her father. Only, not exactly, because of one very
important thing. Her brother.

The son Kale always spoke of was born second. Arriku named him Kylar
and he is as dark and small of stature as his mother. He is reserved
and shy and his sister is constantly dragging him into trouble. He
has a surprising fascination for magic, especially that of transmutation
and Arriku does not have the heart to try and turn him away from it.
Rather, she encourages him to his studies, a nice, safe path of a
scholar. She figures that if Kale had truly wanted his sons to believe
that magic was only the domain of the gods that he would have stayed
at home and taught them that.

Hanna and Kylar are as inseparable as youd picture twins to be. Hanna
challenges him to be stronger, constantly chasing him and trying to
toughen him up. Kylar tries to teach her arcane lore and the history
of Thera that he finds so fascinating. Arriku lets them both freely
make their own decisions in life, but she raises them to be a part of
the light and her stories tend to be more about the Fortress and the
Inn than the Village.

Also - later asked if she could help defend/raid for Fort. I said no, no, no. She said she felt half Herald/half Maran (due to her parentage). I told her she'd better pick a side. She did, she's staying with us.

An Immortal added 500 exp for: Chat on various stuff..I like where she's going. Playing the graceful but stubborn take. For Iunna: I got her to try some ale and stuff for her craft, that a good start? :p

An Immortal added 800 exp for: Role updates - how she's learning about various paladin virtues from the people she interacts with.

Damn, we went from bolting from Sarien at the altar to kissing an evil Rager in record time.

Mon Apr 20 05:29:16 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (110 hrs):
Gotta admit, the whole mopey Sarien-Kale saga is starting to grate on my nerves, only because that's all she seems to be really concerned about these days.

Thu Apr 23 22:15:03 2009 by 'Iunna' at level 51 (115 hrs):
We went from talking with Sarien about our steamy nights and zomg I love yous, to letting Kale declare love and being totally smitten in under an hour. Stay tuned tomorrow.

Thu Apr 23 22:15:37 2009 by 'Iunna' at level 51 (115 hrs):
On that note, at least we're consistent?

An Immortal added 300 exp for: Pretty productive chat in the Hut on many subjects. I don't think she sees how the whole religion fits together as a whole yet, but hopefully she will in due time.

Sat Apr 25 12:10:06 2009 by 'Iunna' at level 51 (123 hrs):
I totally get having a soundtrack, but I think it's kind of tacky to send lyrics to people in-game.

Sat Apr 25 13:19:35 2009 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (123 hrs):
An Immortal added 500 exp for: A valiant battle in the Dragon Tower Ruins. I need to turn those resets down a notch. :P

Sat Apr 25 15:57:12 2009 by 'Padwei' at level 51 (127 hrs):
To clarify my previous statement - she sent an Edie Brickell song to Herald and assorted other individual characters. Credited Edie, but it still seems like a pretty OOC thing to do.

Sat Apr 25 16:44:00 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (128 hrs):
Dropped her alignment some for falling in love with Kale (evil rager) and all that jazz. Influence goes both ways, the longer they spend with each other they greater it'll hit.

Sun Apr 26 12:33:04 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (129 hrs):
Tells Sarien she loves him and won't leave him, then repeats the same mushy lines for Kale. On a side note, I'm not sure there's too much depth to this char, seems to be stagnating and that's anti-Yean religion.

Sun Apr 26 20:50:58 2009 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (129 hrs):
An Immortal added 1000 exp for: Tea party.

Tue Apr 28 22:33:41 2009 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (139 hrs):
An Immortal added 800 exp for: I love two men. One good, one bad. I tell my journal of my difficulty with the men.

Sun May 3 12:52:00 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (147 hrs):
Discussed the consequences of mixing with evils today. She's going to take it on and 'perform a miracle'. Attagirl.

Wed May 13 21:41:17 2009 by 'Padwei' at level 51 (177 hrs):
Because yes, I'm a sucker for a love story, Arriku begged to give some of her con to Kale, and so I obliged.

Wed May 13 22:27:47 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (177 hrs):
They both came by to my shrine now, she to face her consequences. Turned neutral as well, and dropped empowerment.

Sat May 16 13:04:54 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (183 hrs):
Make that borderline good/neutral. She does seem to be winning the save-Kale-from-Hell campaign.

Sat May 16 18:44:28 2009 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (183 hrs):
An Immortal added 800 exp for: More difficulties with hearting evil. But I'm turning him! and yay marriage

Sat Jun 6 08:50:43 2009 by 'Yean' at level 51 (204 hrs):
Upped her alignment, empowerment and 2nd virtued. She's roleplayed the whole ordeal and stuck it out with admirable effort. She'll have to do more acts of goodness to purge the remaining bit of darkness.
