Description

You see a lithe young elf, crouched slightly in a guard stance.
Olive complexion peers out from beteeen dun-colored wraps from ankle to
neck. Short, white hair frames a remarkably handsome face despite a
network of thin, livid scars haphazardly crossing his aquiline visage.
Several blue tattoos in a rough, geometic pattern, create the impression
of some rare and merciless bird of pray peeking out from comically
bushy white eyebrows - in their shadow hazel eyes glow softly
with the spark of profound intelligence and the natural magic of
infravision. An all-encompassing cloak falls to the soles of his
boots, however each nearly imperceptable shift of his body hints
at an adventurer graceful beyond measure. From the tops of his
pointed ears you can make out the glint of at least ten silvery
earrings, each adorned with tiny colored gems. From a verdant green
to light-absorbing onyx, they sitr ever so gently and yet make no sound.

Chapter 8

History

I ran. The screams and sickly wet crunching sounds echoed in my ears and I
ran faster. I don't remember being tired but eventually my legs
eventually buckled and I landed face down in a pile of leaves. My last
conscious action before passing out was pulling some of the dead foliage over
my body. My last conscious thought was that I would be dead soon.

The angle of light through the trees and the dryness in my mouth told me I
had slept for a whole day. Nightmares of panic and dismemberment had infested
my dreams but now I just felt numb. I quietly made my way back to the
encampment and surveyed the aftermath without emotion. My whole squad had
become nothing but scattered bones, scraps of armor, and blood. So much
blood. Guilt and shame grew as I gathered the remains of my comrades and put
them to the torch. As the flames leapt higher I had once last thought and
threw my squad insignia on the pyre. I was no longer a soldier, just a lucky
coward. I was dead.... dead to all I had been.

I wandered for many moons. I followed the trail left by the orc raiding party
but lost them in the mountains. A dry cave became my new home and I prayed
every night to the gods of light and spirits of nature for forgiveness. All I
had left was a fading sense of discipline as I practiced my body and mind,
meditating with the rising sun and murdering every stray orc that strayed too
close to my hiding place. Soon even the rocks and streams spoke to me,
teaching me that every day was a new life... a new chance for atonement.

Through the years my self-reproach became a grim sense of humor as every hunt
became a sort of game. Laughter replaced my tears. I was free. That fateful
day of terror, over time, became a source of strength. Each kill was proof
that that I was still a warrior. Each moment of silence was proof that the
spirits walked with me, and I was to be their protector. Each moment of doubt
and and terror was proof that I was becoming even more... fearless.

Let the records of Darsylon show Korinistin Osebrin was killed in action. I
was a soldier again, but I would no longer kill for a king, or live by the
laws of elf or man. I would fight for nature, and I would die with smile.

Outland

It's sometimes hard to take this turn of events seriously. Part of me still feels
that splinter of shame... even knowing it's not in my power to change the past, it
still stings. But then, whenever I still my thoughts and quiet my self-indulgent
self-reproach, a sense of wonder and love and absolution washes over me like a
drenching downpour. I am still stuck between two worlds, but for reasons I'm not
wise enough to divine, I am beginning to accept it.

Maybe part of this new enlightenment is this place. The gifts the spirits have
given to me. Not the powers over wind and water, over the essence of the lifeforce
itself. But a new mission. A worthy mission! The spirits care nothing for my past,
only what I am doing now. Only what I will do next...

Ugh... I know it serves some purpose but I have to stop writing like this.

Never easy...

Thus the spirits spoke. Not in emotion or signs, but in words....

Simpler, I suppose, but still ambiguous. Even more so, somehow. Maybe it was
the years of being alone, hearing no language but my own. Maybe it is just
more fear. Fear of failing the spirits that saved my life and soul. Fear of
asking for guidance.

Fear of death was much, much simpler...

Thar-Eris and practice deception.

If this civilization builds walls, covets goods, enslaves bodies and minds, I
will be its nemesis. Baerinika... do not bless me, but all those who came before me.
Bless the lost patrol. Bless my enemies.

Of course it is not all doom. Honesty in everything... it will be... fun.

Purity

In such a world of strife and death and decay where is the place for purity?

Only in myself. What is left but to find and refine that part of my own spirit that is
impure... and to make peace with it, or drive it out.

Earth, wind, fire, water, and life itself is pure, part of of the Mother. My fight is pure
because my principles, power, purpose itself is to defend the spirits from the impure.

What is the problem, what is this seed of doubt that torments me? Only one way to find out...

Courage

Something She said when we first met is beginning to make sense to me. The Lady wondered at
the cowardice of running away from that fateful orc ambush that shaped so much of what I am
today. It was an impossible situation... sometimes even the orcs know the ways of combat, if not
much else. If I would have stayed I would have been dead, and many threats since might
have gone unmet if I did not survive.

I am beginning to hate the relativism that springs from too much introspection, but this is
of vital import. Courage is not a simple matter of being valiant in the face of mortal
danger. It never was.

Courage is about doing the Right thing, no matter what. Sometimes it is staying and dying, but,
especially for a warrior like myself, ofttimes it is runing away without guilt or blame so
I can continue the war. It is about having the wisdom and, heh, purity of spirit to fight
my own instinct when necessary.

It is about continuing to sift my experience to find Truth. Praise and thanks once again, Baerinika.

Combat

I seem to remember it was easier, once upon a time.
I have fought for centuries now, and for centuries I knew little of defeat. Even now the
sight of my lifeless body gives me pause... But, no. That is just the price of war, and
I suppose I am past due on Death's accounts. However, I have not been especially careless.
If I am bested in arms I can only give myself a proper burial and try not to make the
same mistake twice.

My greatest foe, my mortal enemy is still the one who gives me the greatest strength.
Myself. The bitterness of self-reproach burns long after memory of cold iron blades. The
shame I bring upon the followers of the Lady, past and present, curses me more than
the darkest of the black magics. The simple fact that the spirits called me as their
blade, and in this time of my greatest power I only offer them dead flesh to feed the
worms.

I would pray, beg for forgiveness... but I will not. Pity did not bring me this far. There
is no memory in my war. Only experience, pain, sorrow. And, by the blessings of that which I
fight for, there is new life. Redemption. The eternal struggle. No, no forgiveness. Not for
me, and not for the evils ahead.

My thanks to the spirits, for all life. My thanks to Baerinika, for her trust and
inspiration. My thanks... to myself. If I never spill another drop of evil blood again, if
the only memory I leave in this world is one of death, I will be strong. Until the end.

Finally, the seeker finds what he was looking for. Destroying evil,
protecting the Mother, honoring the Ancients... it is all part of my life,
but is not an obligation. _I don't have to do this!_ Maybe this is what She
was talking about throughout the centuries. I am absolutely free, and I owe
no soul anything. But still the war rages, still I stand on the line. Why?

I need to, because I have the power to change the present state of affairs.
It is not a right but... an opportunity. So I shall seize it. I will die
sometime in the future, I seek to escape failures of the past, but I will
live for the present. For the spirits and for my Lady... I shall sacrifice my
life to this horrible conflict not for obligations, not for oaths and duty. I
will do it because I need to. Because I can.

I need more power, and I shall find it... or perish in the attempt.
