Malthalia Alves the Haunting Elegy, Drillmistress of Battle

Description

Skeletal features surround the bright eyes of this high-elf. Her
hair is cropped short, ragged and obviously done without benefit
of a mirror. There is a darkness about her features, a shadow
surrounding her, a mien of great sorrow. She moves as though
it pains her, but with a confidence and purpose. Her eyes
though, are alight with a glimmer of life, sparkling grey
and green in the light.

Her clothing is practical, mixed pieces of armor and cloth covering
her. What you can see of her is thin, entirely too thin. Emaciated
you would say, as though food is something alien to her mouth. Her
lips are thin, tightly pressed together. Her cheeks sallow and drawn.

There is a peculiar tightening about her eyes now, as of shame and pain
hiding deep within. Despite this tenseness, there is also a sense
of peace, calmness and a willing acceptance. The conflicts of a lifetime
are plain upon her face.

Her hair has strong streaks of grey running through it, and it seems pale
and wan, as though the color has faded in the noonday sun.

Chapter 25

History

"I had always believed there was a calling for me in this life,
a place where I would both start and finish my life. When I was
young, I had always thought it would be with him, that we would
grow old together, have children together, and I was filled with
joy at the future we would have together. Together, always
together, we were always together those days."

As I swallow, the lump in my throat is large, making it difficult
and painful, fighting back the tears that always seem to come
unbidden.

"It is difficult these days, hard to remember to eat, to sleep, to
live. I know I will never live, not like I could have, but it was
not to be, and I must simply accept that. You know, there will
never be another in my life that will take his place, I will
live on for his memory, for our dream of what we could have been."

I run my fingers through my brown hair, shorn so long ago in grief,
short now, a boy's cut. My body, once lean is now too thin, bony,
a testament to the pain in my spirit. A tear creeps out of my eye,
unwelcome but not acknowledged. It drips down my cheek slowly as
I continue my story.

"You know, I have not shared this since then, I cannot bring myself
to. Perhaps if I could, I would heal, but I know I never will heal.
I have no hope for that, and would not want it if I could. What use,
he is dead."

My eyes lift up again from their shadowed gaze. The jeweled eyes
of a high-elf, sparkling in the dim light. They seem green, or
gray, a shade somewhere in between.

"Do you know what they did to him? No, I cannot say, I cannot bear
to remember it, what the beasts of the darkness did, I will not
remember it!"

Harsh sobs escape my lips, my thin shoulders slumped and shivering.
My tears flow freely now, my pain so very clear on my face. My
eyes grow faint, unfocused, and stare off into the darkness.

"He was so wonderful, my love, we were so wonderful together. I
had hopes then, dreams, but now there is nothing left to me. I
promise you though, just as I promised him when I burned what was
left of his tainted, twisted remains, that I shall raise my voice
in song against the darkness, against the abominations that twist
this world and bring their unholy wars to it, until there is no
more breath to sing. My love shall hear my voice singing to him
until...well, I know I shall not win, but there will be one candle
lighting this world for a brief while."

I am calm now, serene almost. My thin lips tight with determination.
I know that I shall not prevail, I have no hope of that and would not
desire it anyways. I only hope to erase the memories leaking in my
thoughts, to forget the pain that has gone before, and to find peace
at the last.

The Commander's "Wench"

I will admit that there has been one thing troubling my rest. It is the cries of the
woman that the commander, Borkahd, keeps in his hut. Her piteous pleas trouble me
greatly, and I will address this with the Commander when next I see him. I realize now
that part of what troubles me is that I turn a blind eye to my better
nature in order to perform my work here. I should not blind myself, I should speak
and stand and be heard. I have a voice and that voice needs to be heard or else
my conscience shall always trouble me.

I will ask the commander to release her, and if he will not do it at my asking,
I will do as I must to do what is right.

I know I have written some on this one, and yet I feel compelled to write
more. In a way, the Prophet represents all that is good in the world. Kindness,
charity, a generosity of spirit that cannot be found in normal mortals.

And yet, the prophet is a shapeshifter, one of those that I hunt.

I have shared some of my story with the Prophet and felt empathy flowing
back to me. I do not believe this one intends harm, and yet, by the choices
we have both made in life, we are enemies.

Some peace, at last.

I have been a defender of this village for a long while now. I battle, I raid
and I mend the wounds of these brave fellows as I am able. I have led the charge
against the darkness and the ills of magic many times now, rallying them against
our foes and leading successful forays into battle.

I think I am finally at a point where I want to be. I still mourn for the
life that could have been, and the remembered pain of that day still drives me,
and yet, I have worth and value, I have a purpose, and I know that I shall
see him again. I can wait for that, I must wait for it, and life marches on.

A dire request

On this day, Enlilth, the voice of tyranny, bid me write a piece
for his glory. I did so with what I thought proper respect, though the piece left
a bitter taste on my mouth only assuaged by the writing of a second piece.

I am amazed though, that my voice reaches even to the heavens, drawing attention
and what I assume will be ire soon enough. My love, did you ever think that I
would have a voice that could rise so high as that?

I have resigned myself to this fate, my life without you, and I hope that

I have not shamed you in any way. I miss you so, and dream often of the
life we might have had.

Together. Perhaps, at the last, we might be.

Chapter 17

My path in life

Mattias, forgive me please for the life I lead. I know this is not the path
you would have walked should you have lived. I am not the person that you were.

I recall the words that the Immortal Voice of the village, Yean, spoke
to me, about my ability to inspire and to console these fierce villagers. I did
not understand them then, but I think I gain some little insight as life goes
on. I must change somewhat, though I cannot, I must learn to grow despite my
everpresent despair. My beloved, please forgive me, I must live this life, and
wait until my meandering path reaches its end before we might see each
other again.

When I was young, the memory of my pain still fresh, I hoped and I prayed that
the end would quickly come. It has not, and I realize that it is not my
fate to be so blessed. It will come for in its time, and I must live, if
only to honor my love, not invalidate it. My Mattias, you inspire me even now
through the death and the despair, the war and the flames that are fanned
within me. I must live, for now, that is my fate.

It is so difficult, to muster the courage to face that simple fact.

I must live, and so I should live this life as well as I can. Mattias would
have done so, and lived it better than I. I wish, from time to time, that our
roles were reversed, and I was the one to die in his stead.

Let me finish my tale, perhaps, and through that, there might be some understanding.

My Mattias, they tormented him so, but he did not die at their hands. It was at
the hands of our kindred, a carelessness that is unforgivable, that led to his
merciful release from their torments. The spirit that lived in him struggled bravely,
wanted to live so very much, and endured more than I could have imagined was
possible.

In the end, it was his rescuers who slew him. An invoker, one of the guards who
came so late to try to drive off these beasts, shot cold through his magical incantations.
This cold, what I have since learned to be the cone of cold spell, froze the last
vestiges of life from my poor Mattias' withered form. This carelessness, disregard for
the hurt that can be caused, this showed me the true nature of those who chase
down this power. The taint lives on in them, however pure their intentions.

The shame I bear is that I know I would do the same, and have been careless of
who or what may hear my meagre words. I know that I am no better in my heart
that that which I fight against. How can I be? I betray his memory every time I raise
hand against anyone, against our kin, against those who hold purity and innocence dear.

I cannot help it, I have chosen this path, I will walk it as well as I can.

I am a Defender of the village, and that is the life I have chosen. Please forgive
me my love, I ache to rest in your arms.

Hells!

I need to be careful, twice now my own failures have cost us the retrieval of the head and allowed others
to regain it. The first time, the fortress, our own applicant did most of the work, and I let them
walk in and finish the vanquisher. And now, I fell to Jern, and the Nexuns will regain their
key. Hells! And to think it was all because I made one stupid, silly, asinine mistake defending.

Fall down twice, stand up thrice. Or as our commander says, it's through our failures we learn
to be strong.

The Betrayer's End

This work is very personal to me, for through it I light up
the fears that I have, that I have betrayed something dear
to my love. I have hunted kin, and will do so again, in the
name of a higher purpose, but has this righteousness led
me down the wrong path?

I cannot believe that, I will not let myself believe that.
And yet, the Cardinal of the Fortress, a position that requires
great kindness, is held by a shapeshifter. How do I reconcile
that?

I suppose that evil takes many faces, that is what I will hold
to.

On Betrayal

I know in my heart that I am a coward, a betrayer. I left Mattias
to die, I slew Kaleb. I know that I have no real place in this village
of the brave, no hope and no future. The Prophet sought to comfort
me, but his words ring hollow in my ears.

I do not know what my fate holds for me, but I trudge wearily along
towards it, resigned to whatever it is. I deserve the worst of things,
for what I have done. But how could I choose otherwise?

I am an object of pity to the others of my race, they sense my pain
but know nothing to do about it. I myself know not what to do but seek
atonement of some sense. I doubt that there is any way to atone for
my actions, and have no hope about that. Instead, I will suffer this
agony, giving voice to my pain.

Kaleb

How sad it is to see one of the high so far gone as to wield the twisted
magic, that remnant of the godstuff that should be beyond mortal ken.
And yet, with his death, I earned my hut in the village, and yet
his bloodlines are pure, he is one of the highborn. This conundrum
saddens me, that one born to the light could be twisted and turned
aside from it.

I wonder to myself if I betray my love with that act. I know that
he would never do such a thing, but I also know that I cannot let
what happened to him happen to others. I must pay this price
for him, however steep it will be.

My love, I wish we were blessed with the simpler life we once
had.

Chapter 23

Character

Malthalia has a lot of guilt and shame in her self. She was ashamed
of her behavior that day, ashamed that she did not help, that fear
froze her in her place. She lives through taht guilt almost constantly,
and it drives her on.

She is still a good-hearted person, and would not harm any of the light
if she is able to avoid doing so. She will seek the Village, and fully
expects to be denied, or if she is allowed a place, to die easily. She
cannot believe that life has any meaning for herself, and is oft inclined
to be careless of herself.

When singing, she cannot bring herself to sing in a comedic tone. The
lighthearted lyrics and joyous voice of that repertoire grates upon her
spirit. She most prefers the tragic repertoire, though will also freely
use the romantic voice so familiar to her kind.

Though never married to Mattias, she has taken his last name for her own.
Her parents worry over the depth of grief she has shown, and are quite
likely the only reason she has not already commited suicide.

She will sometimes exhibit moments of cheerfullness, similar to how she
was before the tragedy, but these tend to be shortlived before her more
usual moroseness sets in. She is unfailingly polite to all.

Hopes and Dreams

When I was younger, I had never dared to dream that I would train my voice.
I had a natural talent, of course, a softness, a certain lilt, that others
found pleasant. I had hoped to be a mother, to raise a family, a simple
life, but a good one, and one which I would have been happily content in.

His name was Mattias, Mattias Alves. He barely lived past his first
century, a pittance in the time alloted our kind by the gods. I had the
joy of knowing him for almost half of that, we grew together, and I had
hoped to live our life together.

He had a good heart, a kind heart, and a softness about him that was all
for me. He died what would have been called a hero, his life for another;
if he had only succeeded in even that I would have had some slight succor
from my pain. Instead he died in vain, and I was not able to die with
him.

One of the dark-knights, in the company of a deathwalker, in the company
of a shapeshifter of the Nexus, assailed the city that night. The city
was Darsylon, once my home though no longer, and they slew all they could
find. The guards know the price the pay for the safety of the town, that
perhaps the citizens might live. The children, though, they know nothing
of this, of the fire that can be brought to life that burns tender flesh
so fiercely.

Mattias saw them, had seen them fighting in the streets. We both knew that
there was nothing to be done, neither one of us could stand against those
three. There was nothing to be done, but wait for the guards to come and
drive them away. The fires blazed as the knight chanted unholy words,
searing the flesh of all near him. Screams of the dead and dying filled the
air.


My lovely Mattias had the softest hands, a healer's hands. He intended to
study those arts, dedicate himself the to gods of the light. Instead, that
day, he charged from where we hid, trying to snatch a little child, a young
girl, from the fray, before the flames caught her up.

Instead, they noticed him, caught him between them. The child was impaled,
lifted into the air, and died sliding down the knight's spear. My Mattias,
however, they caught.

Please, I cannot go through this again.

Chapter 19

Alcoholism and the lighter side of life

Malthalia has discovered the dubious pleasures of absinthe, and in it she
she has immersed herself. She recently had a battle with Kassibaz in which
her glass of absinthe that she was drinking from shattered in the extreme cold of
a snowstorm, and this led her to right that last poem. It is obviously a lighter-hearted
work that she typically does, and completely unlike her normal tone. For brief moments,
she loses herself in the battle, and the joys of drinking and singing, and this sometimes will
carry over to her songs.

Not to worry though, her normal doleful nature reemerges quite regularly, and her sorrows
will surface when she sobers up enough to remember them.

A Sad Day

This day I learned that Thendrell Thistletone, the truest friend I have had, died
quietly, of old age. I knew him when I was young, new to the village and this war,
And I knew him during my centuries here, and knew he grew in power and faith.

I am amazed that I had earned the friendship of so stout a paladin, despite the
life I have lived, and the many I have slain.

The next work I write will be for him, my only friend.

Drillmistress

I had given up hope that this might come to pass. I had resigned myself to the brief storm, then
the cold of the grave. For now, there is some slight respite of this, some glimmer of
hope in this life. I had even put forward Susubianko as a potential candidate, and yet
the Commander, Woldrun, named me to success Goroel.

I need to speak with him now, determine how best I can serve the village, and what
direction he would have me work in. Two heads moving in opposite directions can tear
a body into pieces.

The Fortress of the Light

The stink of taint my heart did melt
This mage who before had fought
My challenges came to naught
In his stead a rogue did stand
And uttered magic words quite bland
One scroll, two he did recite
In ire I said "good night"
This at last the mage drew out
And to him too my words came out
But what more could I do?
For the one, stood more than two
Not from fear that stayed my hand
Rather shifting grounds of sand
I woke first one then the next
And stood there quite perplexed
I did not come to fight them all
I know the price would be my soul
Instead I had to leave
Twixt my soul and what I believe

The twinge I felt that doubtful day
The mage I woke and left him there

Thoughts

I need to change. The Warlord, that giant who would not meet me after my earlier
failure, pointed out the anger I carried towards him. In that, he is right. That must
cease.

Also, Yean, soothing song that she is, pointed out my failure to inspire our
village. There is much going on, and I know that she is right in this, and I will
compose something to bring this home.

How to fall on your blade in one easy step

Ah, how tempting, a scion there in the pond. How thoughtful the chase into the pool,
the sweet words that secured him in his dreams, the songs that taunted him, wrought
his dreams into nightmares.

Even better, then, that his friend came to join the fray. Even better, then, that
two scions fell to me this day, in this pool, where the currents are so strong and keep
me from finding my way out.

At least the Imperials, three of them, came to free me from the waves at the end.

Drillmaster

Woldrun, the new commander, spoke briefly with me on his choice for Drillmaster. He indicated that
he felt that Goroel would be a more present force for the village. While I do not agree
with his choice, or rather I feel disappointed about it, I understand his reasoning. It was
his choice to make, and he made it, and it was not I.

I cannot help but be disappointed, though. This disappointment runs through me, eats
at me, but I know that is simply my own burden to bear. The new commander was considerate in
speaking with me about this, and I have known him all my life. He is a stout heart, he deserves
my wholehearted support, and that is what he shall have. I have walked this path too long
to trouble myself with a trifle such as this.

Chapter 9

Direction?

I am now known as the MageSlayer. That is one goal of my life achieved.
I do not know how long I should live, how long til the fates allow me to rest, and
perhaps to rest in the arms of my love, though I know that is not to be my fate.
I know the price of the choices I have made, I know the purity of his heart
and his soul, and I know that I shall not see him again except in my tormented
dreams.

What now though? What drives me? Most I have known have passed on, there
are few that live that were alive when I was born. The odd familiar face, the
comforting cadence of words spoken with friendly voice. I miss these things.

I am a defender of this place, of the souls who fight this war, that is the rock I
have clung to to keep the storms from washing me away, and that is the rock I will
need to hold tight to.

I have met many who have lived a life different than mine, having faced their
pain and recovered enough to forgive, to grow. I am not so strong as that, and I
cannot be. I am brittle, I know that, and there is a deep, overwhelming darkness within
my spirit. It feeds on me, consumes me, and will devour me, but for the rock
I cling to and the tiny candle of love I once knew. I can daydream, fantasize
about the life that could have been mine, if things had been different, if the cruel
fates had not torn my heart from me, if I had the presence within my spirit to
recover. There is no use, though, no prayer to be said against that which is done,
no shelter from a storm so long blown away. I am who and what I am, and I know the
price I have paid, and the accolades I have won, the hatreds, the pride, the pity.

I am what I chose to become, and I acknowledge the choices I have made, and the price
I took up in following this lonely path.

My Mattias, I only wish...

A Kind Word

I was within the village today, gathering myself between assaults. We hold the scepter
of the Scions now, and have for as long as I can manage to hold it. A young
girl, nearly a woman, of elvish descent, came and handed me a bit of meat, a steak
carved of the corpse of Borkahd. A better gift I have never been given in my
life. I offered my apologies to her, and though I was not forgiven, they were
accepted without the harsh recriminations I would have expected.

Perhaps then, this mortal weakness of mine has not rendered me so worthless,
so destitute of life as my spirit has felt. If the one who I wronged does note
judge me, if she has the kindness within her spirit to look upon one who failed her
with even the least bit of kindness, then perhaps...

Perhaps what? It is but one sin of many on my spirit. I cannot ask forgiveness,
nor do I merit it. And yet, what a difference one small, kind word makes.

Black as pitch

It is a wonder to me that my skin is not as black as my soul.

I am filled with a new hatred, beyond what I have ever known. This hatred
has but a single focus, myself. How could I ever have been this beast that
I am? How could I turn a blind eye, a deaf ear, how ever console myself with
another's misery?

That bastard says to find strength from this pain. He is a fool, strength comes
from having a heart that beats, and from a spirit that grows, not from this
ever-tainted turning inwards. Not from having a pain that grows and grows,
a pain whose only source is your own actions. I have killed other elves,
I have done dire things that would cause the gods themselves to turn from
my hideous visage, and yet, none haunts me so much as my own inaction.

I cannot face this any longer, I cannot claim even the least piece of
his love, not for this demon in elf's skin I am now. I will live, and I will
breathe, but I have no heart any longer. I do not deserve it. Not the
least bit of what I once knew is to be mine, not now, not ever, and I
have no more hopes, no more dreams.

I am sorry, Mattias, and I fear I shall never be home again.

Too little, too late.

I am ashamed of myself.

I knew of the one that the Commander kept in his hut, and I spoke not.
I knew of her, and I did nothing, and now the Commander has ascended and there
is naught to be done. She has freed herself, and I am shamed.

Never again will I let that happen, not ever in this life will I stand aside
and watch while evil is done for evil's sake, no matter the cause.

Chapter 2

A Truce, of sorts

Yesterday was a high point. The village was strong, and we stood against many and the blood
flowed freely.

In the end, none of our foes stood against us, and only the Tribunal came to hunt.
We fought them, and killed several. In my rage, I brought the war to their
crown-jewel, Galadon, and hunted them down there as well. In reflection, the reasons for this
are quite simple. I have been a defender for so very long, and I tire of people
knocking at the very gates of the village seeking the blood of my family, expecting their
own homes to be safe.

These reasons still hold sway in my heart, and yet I will restrain myself in exchange for
Nidblot doing the same. While it may seem a poor bargain, it fits with what I know I must
be doing. It ensures I will not distract myself with the blood of a few when I must work
harder to be a leader within the Village.

As such, I will not hunt in Galadon for the life of Nidblot, so long as he remains
true to his word to never come to the village nor the ruins outside seeking
the blood of my family.

It seems it took words with Immortal Marcatis to bring some reason to my clouded
judgement, to calm my fiery thoughts. I know that I walk a path so far from the rest
of my kin, as he had the courtesy to point out to me, and I have walked it with every ounce
of strength in my spirit. I have accomplished much, and yet there is so very much that
needs be done. I must remember that, and remember that I am no blind fool
to leave my thinking self behind in this war. I must use every gift given me to
do what must be done.

The end at last

I have been battered and bruised, torn and ripped, and lived and died as I chose.

The fires of my life die, and soon I shall lay myself down, and rise up never
