Description

Short and stout, the stubby gnome standing before you is sight to
behold. Her tangled brown hair has bright bursts of blue and green flowers
tucked within the knots that make her seem younger than she really is. Her
piercing blue eyes seem as if she is looking straight through you, deep into
your soul. Her features are small, but proportional to her stooped,
unathletic body. wrapped around her shoulders is a loose cloak of black
fabric, fluttering carelessly behind her, but looks large enough to envelop
her tiny body.

Grunta's first lesson.

Sweat beaded her upper lip. Her eyes took on a dangerous sheen. Her gaze
shifted from side to side. Grunta kepa a careful distance. Close enough
not to show fear but far enough to be prudent. Her stance was solidly
balanced and prepared for action, legs wide apart with one foot back,
chest out, arms free.

Harrar Hammersong pounced, hurtling his full weight upon her. They went
down with a thunder, but Grunta bucked like a bronco and attempted to
scratch out his eyes with her ragged nails. He slapped her wrist down hard.
He lay on top of her, trying to keep her still while protecting the more
sensitive parts of his anatomy from her lashing feet. She grabbed a
fistful of his hair and yanked.

"Shite!" He jerked his head free, snapped his fingers around her wrist,

"Train me!" Grunta screamed hoarsely at Harrar, as she made one last futile
attempt to jerk free.

"Come on," Harrar goaded unkindly, "you need more than training, woman."

She wasn't struggling anymore, she wasn't totally naive, Harrar thought.

Harrar took the time to give his uninvited guest a thorough inspection.
From close up, he could see that she was truly ragged around the edges.
The back of her neck was whiter than the front, as if it had recently
been protected by long hair, then ruthlessly exposed by desperate
scissors. The roots of her dull black hair appeared a tawny brown.

"Little girl, don't you have enough to worry about without picking
fights with me?"

"Probably," she said gamely, "but I have to start somewhere."

She lashed out with her foot. He shifted and stopped the blow in time.
Just as he began to grin smugly, she sank her teeth into his forearm.
The cat and mouse game continued... but little did Grunta know, her
training just began.

Chapter 4

Freedom at last.

Grunta awoke as she'd learned to awaken - slowly, degree by degree, so that
she reached consciousness without ever giving herself away. First her ears
woke up, seeking out the sound of another person breathing. Next her skin
pricked to life, searching for the burning feeling of her father's body
pressed against her back. Finally, when her ears registered no sound and
and sat up. She'd once liked mornings. They were difficult for her now,
but not as difficult as night, where she would lie there and try to force
her eyes to give up their vigilant search of shadows in favor of sleep.

"You made it," she told herself. "You actually made it."

For the last two years she'd been running from her past - from her sick,
incestuous father who'd used his training in the arcane magics to freeze
her joints while he enjoyed her company without her permission. From her
envious, resentful mother who blamed her for her father's sickness. From
her uppity older brother who hid from their family demons behind the visage
of animal shapes while never using abilities to protect her from her father.
From her family name, Hailstorm, who, unlike most gnomish families,
believed that a woman's only role was to serve her family's needs without
question or complaint.

In her flight, she'd learned to pick up aliases like decorative accessories
and new addresses like spare parts. She'd run to the far reaches of the
Realm, but she'd always felt hopeless. She never felt safe...

Grunta climed out of bed. She moved slowly. Her right leg was stiff and
achy, the jagged scar of her youth twitching with ghost pains. Her left
wrist throbbed, ringed by harsh circles of purple bruises. She could tell
it wasn't anything serious - her father had taught her a lot about broken
bones when she refused his advances. As things went in her life these
days, a bruised wrist was the least of her concerns.

She was alive. She was safe. Harrar Hammersong, decendant of the mighty
Thror Hammersong, had relented and took her on as an apprentice.

Finally, she's being trained. She's taken control of her life.

Haunting Dreams

Grunta slept and, as always, her father found her again in her dreams. In
the shadows of the night she was back in the Halfling Lands, lying in bed,
the covers pulled up to her chin.

He's going to come out of the closet, she thought. Her mother had told her
there was no such thing as monsters, but her mother had lied because her
mother hadn't wanted to believe in such evil men.

He's going to come out of the closet. Run, Grunta, run.

But she couldn't run. She had no muscle. She was a shapeless blob, a
weak, defenseless feather pillow. She knew she had to move, but it was
too late.

Her closet door slid open and he stepped into the room, naked from head to
toe, and grinning a maniacle grin.

"Did you miss me, Grunta? I missed you."

She whimpered. She heard the plea bubble in her throat and she knew she
was going to die. Oddly, she welcomed it.

"I am going to kill you, Grunta. You think I wouldn't find you? I've
always known where you were. You can run, but I can sense your fear from
anywhere. Anywhere! Your training in the martial arts will not help you,
girl, from the powers of the arcane. You think your mother or brother
will miss you? No! They've forgotten you already. You're a worthless,
sniveling girl... and you simply don't exist. You never did."

Grunta woke up, terrified. Her fingers clenched convusively around her
blankets as she lay in bed, her chest heaving, the sweat rolling down her
cheeks. It was just a dream.

Emotions Revealed

Grunta learned, and learned quickly. She came to Harrar Hammersong barely
a skin-covered skeleton with no strength, stamina, or muscle tone to speak
of - but she was feisty, spirited, and eager to learn.

She was changing, becoming strong, capable. She realized that she was no
longer the punching bag she was when she arrived at Harrar's just months
before. She relized that she didn't have just arms and legs but that she
could run, fight, give, and take depending on the circumstance. She could
reclaim all the pieces of herself that had been stolen by stronger, cruel
men, and she could do whatever she wanted.

Harrar's training had peeled away layers of fat, and replaced them with
muscle. He peeled away layers of scarred emotion, revealing an intense,
repressed anger that was hidden beneath.

She was no longer a woman who played by the rules. She had anger and dark
moods she didn't understand. She was unpredictible, and raw around the
edges. When she moved, she no longer made any sound. Instead of being
quiet and submissive or sneaky, if she had a problem with you, she wouldn't
poison your dog or burn down your house. She'd tell you about it to your
face. She'd let you know. She'd walk up to you and slam a fist through
your face.

Envy, harnessed for strength

Grunta spent so much of her life suffering and cowering from her destructive
family that she began to harness her pain, lest she allow it to cripple her
beyond repair.

She envied the strengh and control her parents had.

She envied the love shown to her brother by her parents.

She envied the fact that he was male.

The fact he was allowed to study in whatever he chose to.

The fact that he wasn't beaten.

She envied... everything.

So much was wrong with her life, and she knew it.

For most, Envy is a hidden emotion, one most understand they have but are
able to repress or gloss over, as they can easily weigh their standing
against another and find they are superior in some way. Grunta, however,
could find noone who was treated as poorly, who was as unloved, who was as
unappreciated as herself, and her Envy became her strength. It became her
sole motivator for her conduct. Because she felt so incredibly unhappy,
she became completely unable to bear the sight of someone she thought was
happy - namely her family of magi, and it manifested itself in her intent
on the destruction of magi of all types, on those who sought to control
others, and on those who showed any hint of domination over her. She
would be weak no longer. She would be the best. She would be in control.
