Description

You notice the lanky frame of this female forest-elf, pale and stricken
with some terrible burden that is apparent in her gaunt features and
gangling body which trembles at random intervals. Her skin seems to have
the color of ash but the texture of rose petals, wrinkled prematurely and
far from a pretty sight. Her berry-colored lips are moist with ale and break
out from moment to moment in a Hymn or Song.

Her eyebrows are thin enough to slip past your gaze and cheeks are caved in.
Yet her eyes gleam with determination and untold strength, fearless to return
every hostile gaze and reciprocate a friendly smile. Her bony fingers clutch
harp made from flesh and bone, maggots and flies hovering over it mercilessly
There is a sense of pride in her gait, despite the limp with which she drags
her feet. Scars, patches, bandages are far too many to count and yet she does
not come across as a Veteran of War. He skinny limbs quiver as they walk,
threatening to give in at any moment. Upon her forearm you notice the glowing
mark of a Sword and Flute, pulsating with Strength. A saddle bag is strapped
her back in which she seems to carry her stock of food and drink...judging by
smell of it. You notice people stare at her with hatred and respect, wonder w
mysterious juxtaposition much dwell within her. As you look closer you notice

The Ritual.

Zeeeeeeeep. Swoooosh. Zeeeeeep. Swooooosh.

Ruhktanshi paused. With a curious eye she lifted her gaze and scanned her surroundings.... Nothing.

Head titled to a side, she hissed in warning, beast-like and resumed her work.

Seventeen, Eighteen, Nineteen... Twenty. With a flamboyant swish of her hands
she spun the thread into a knot and tugged at it with the needle to secure it
and test it.

Like a flash of thunder she rose, he stride was much stronger than when she
had first visited this hut... The Hut of the Sublime.

She lifted the garland of Skulls and placed it on the table, nodding a bit and
chanting a Song she had written for Lady Yean.

A step to the left, another forward, right at the centre - she collapsed to a
kneeling position, head lolling from side to side like a grotesque puppet.

Pulling our a dagger and a stomach filled with mage blood she pierced it in
one swift, sharp blow... splattering it all over her face and armors.

She rolled her hand in a circle about herself, marking a circle...

Praise to the Silent Voice of Sublime
A Prayer to Strength and the Spirit Divine.
Praise to the venom that venom shall quell
Praise to the Song that has fought the Spell.

Head lolling from side to side, in tandem to the meter, she continued...

Praise to the Soul sheathed in Beauty True.
Praise to Throns that my wounds Renew.
Praise to the Silent Voice of Sublime
Praise to the Strength and the Spirit Divine.

Silence pursued disturbed only by heavy breathing.

The ritual complete, Ruhktanshi rose in stern fashion, marching out of the hut slowly.

But that Purity is well concealed from man, that dehumanised, inhuman world, which is a celestial naught and the bowels of existence do not speak unto man, except as man.

Verily, it is difficult to prove all being, and hard to make it speak. Tell me, ye brethren, is not the strangest of all things best proved?

And this most upright existence, the Purity--it speaks of the body, and still implies the body, even when it muses and raves and flutters with broken wings.

Always more uprightly learning it to speak, the self and the more it learns, the more it find titles and honours for the body and the earth.

A new pride taught me my Purity, and that teach I unto men: no longer to thrust one's head into the sand of celestial things, but to carry it freely, a terrestrial head, which gives meaning to the earth!

Gentle am I to the Beholders. Verily, I am not indignant at their modes of consolation and ingratitude. May they become convalescents and overcomers, and create Purity for themselves!

Neither am I indignant at a convalescent who looketh tenderly on their delusions, and at midnight steals round the grave of True Gods but sickness and a sick frame remain even in my tears.

Many sickly ones have there always been among those who muse, and languish for Strength - violently they hate the discerning ones, and the last of virtues, which is Strength.

Too well do I know those magical ones: they insist on being believed in, and to them doubt is sin. Too well, also, do I know what they themselves most believe in and the lack of it.

Too narrow is the bridge bettween this world and another, guarded by phantasms
and nightmares, too often have I tread that path in the clasp of unwilling
sleep, too often I have peered into the dark depts and too well do I know the
untold dark secrets it holds.

Fools that do and do not doubt must visit it. Fie upon their soul, fiend upon their visions and fiery doom upon their feet.

Verily, not in magicworlds and redeeming blood-drops: but in the body do I also believe most and my own body is for me the thing-in-itself.

The dream and diction of a God, did the world once seem to me - colored vapors before the eyes of a divinely dissatisfied one.

Good and evil, and joy and woe, Magic and Purity, and I and thou all colored vapours did they seem to me before creative eyes. The creator wished to look away from himself, thereupon he created the world.

Intoxicating joy is it for the sufferer to look away from his suffering and forget himself. Intoxicating joy and self-forgetting, did the world once seem to me.

Thus, once on a time, did I also cast my fancy beyond man, like all worldsmen. Beyond man, forsooth?

A new will teach I unto men: to choose that path which man hath not followed blindly, and to approve of it and no longer to slink aside from it, like the sick and perishing Beholders of Magic!

The sick n perishing Beholders - it was they who despised the body, heavens and the earth, and invented their world of magic, and the redeeming blood-drops but even those sweet and sad poisons they borrowed from the body, heavens and the earth!

From their misery they sought escape, and the stars were too remote for them.
Then they sighed: "O that there were heavenly paths by which to steal into another existence and into happiness!" Then they contrived for themselves their by-paths and bloody magics!

Beyond the sphere of their body and this earth they now fancied themselves transported, these ungrateful ones. But to what did they owe the
convulsion and rapture of their transport? To their body, heaven and this earth.

What happened, my brethren? I surpassed myself, the suffering one. I carried
mine own ashes to the mountain a brighter flame I contrived for myself. And lo!
Thereupon the phantom of nigthmare WITHDREW from me!

To me the convalescent would it now be suffering and torment to believe in such nightmare-phantoms: suffering would it now be to me, and humiliation. Thus I speak of nightmares now to the Beholders of Magic.

Suffering was it, and impotence that created all Strength and the short madness of unwilling sleep, which only the greatest of sufferer experienced.

Weariness, which sought to get to the ultimate with one leap, with a death-leap - a poor ignorant weariness, almost unwilling even to will any longer that created all phantasms and nightmares.

Believe me, my brethren! It was the body which despaired of the body it groped with the fingers of the infatuated spirit at the ultimate walls.

Believe me, my brethren! It was the body which despaired of the earth - it heard the bowels of existence speaking unto it.

And then it sought to get through the ultimate walls with its head and not with its head only - into Purity.

The Last Entry in the Jounal

Dated: Day of the Sun, 20th of the Month of Spring.


Scout. Skjald. Berserker. Defender. What have I not been here where I have found
home. Friend, Sister and now Matron to these that come each day to the village
to train under our Banner of Purity and destroy the Beholder kind. That Night
in the woods was not so revealing of the future, it was but a dark clouding of
a reality that stood and stared me in the face, silently beckoned to its path
and gaudy as magic is, it screamed of the Glory in its propoganda in calculated
lies, that most men or women succumb to...

I've always believed that War and Death alone cannot banish magic from our lands.
Nothing can. Truely, magic is the Creation of the Gods, to destroy magic would
mean to nip its source, which we mortals are neither capable nor inclined to do.
But should that then me the Commander of the Village holds belief that this war
has no victory? That is not true. What is true, sweet as song, is that it is for
the Puritans to show the path to those ignorant: The Fence Sitters, who cannot
for the life of them discern the vile within the Mana. Fence Sitters who are too
easily lured by the glitter and gleam of Ephemeral Power. They CANNOT know
Strength or Courage or Purity or Honor, for they have never seen it to show it themselves.

The Village will rise to the Call of LEGEND. Their Lore is fresh in our air and
their blood-scent still exhumed by the soil upon which we stand. We shall be
be Icon and we shall be Bastions. Combatants and Fighters the world shall not
merely take note of but shall always compare, holding them to better standards
than the best currently are or have been.

When it will be known that Magic is not aid but hindrance, when it shall spread
that in the War between Puritan and Beholder the Puritan always wins (and even
if they do not, their Defeat is far more gratifying that Vicotry) then...
THEN shall come the dawning of an age where Magic is forsaken and frowned upon.
Then will magic be called the Tool of the Weak who have nought of Courage or
Strength within them... Then Shall come the Day when Magic ... which is the
craft of the Gods... shall merely remain the craft of the Gods, free from mortal
lust.

Ruhktanshi's Journal: The Secret Within...

Darkness. Darkness subsided. Light. Whatever came through, gaundy and piercing, through the window of my eyelids.

"Uhhuhhmmmmm" I screamed, in siege of a rope tightly tide between my lips to the
back of my skull, back then I was only thankful that it didn't split my skull
into two, tied tightly as it was.

Unrest. Squirming. Violent Squirming. More muffled screams. Unrest. Surrender...
It took me a while to figure out that I was captured. The dingy storageroom was
full of crates, crates, more crates and a sack or two for contrast.

The lone window stood right in front of me, taunting and torturing me as
it threw its white rays of piercing light right between my eyes.

There was consolation: The wooden chair I was tied to was comfortable. But the
rope around my wrists felt like the clutch of an eagle's talon wrapped tightly
around its prey...a snake... I wiggled some more. It was futile.

Time fly by...like a Bird without wings... each extrutiating minute the length of an eternity and then it opened...

The door to my right, hissing and creaking with the shrill sound of metal that
could frighten my soul on any given night... this one was much worse.

The faint outline of a man stood at the doorway, slow...annoyingly slow to
move... prolonging the fright of anxiety. I drew my breath deeper at its sight.

But it didn't seem to get clearer, I blinked, assuming I was bleary eyed but
darkness seeped into my vision further and a sharp pain in my chest as it
floated closer...It stopped... not the being... my breath...

Darkness. Darkness subsided. light. Whatever came through... very little this time.

I felt the singe of flame as a boney finger of the ghast lifted my face
and it hissed... "Yoouu haave iit. Giive iit tooo usss."

Through my yielding eyes I saw it trace a rune in the air and a spray of water
splashed on my face, freshness...I licked whatever I could.

"What is it you seek? I'm just a poor traveller. I have nothing you need.."

Snarls of anger. "THEE BOOOK! THEEE JOOOOURNAAL! HAAAND IIIT TOOO USSS". Hissing, Only Louder.


"What journal? I have no such..." Interruption. Firewhip choking my throat. Realization.

War beyond War.

Ruhktanshi scanned the room with a worried look on her face.

They were all around her. Before, beneath, beside... behind.

There was no where to go. She was surrounded and from the look of it she was not too eager to fight back.

She slowly laid down her harp and tucked in her sword into its sheath and then
in a manner most submissive that was rather unlikely of her character, she knelt down..

The names of each of the Scribes and Skjalds on the Pillar in the village
glowed with a serene blue light... almost as if each lay enchanted and pleased within its grave.

Chapter 7

Lost and found: Things Two.

The joyous breeze swirled through the branches of the trees tempting the leaves
the floor as the candid sky line lay adorned with shades that were the envy of
each painter's pallete.

The path was silent as the battlefield at the aftermath of war, with a random
hoot of an owl piercing the two-note symphony of the crickets, a cresendo in
a elegy of moans to the passing of the day.

Ruhktanshi, arm wrapped around her harp, strode through the trampled path with a look out for bandits and mages.

Twick. Twick. Twick. THUMP. Three steps and she fell to the floor like an empty sack: curled, heaped and planted in the very centre.

Moaning and struggling she lay on the floor her wide eyes open full, staring helplessly at the sky, desperate to remain conscious.

With spasms of energy, trembling and shaking her nervous body gave in as she arched her back one last time and gave in to the ephemeral moments of lifelessness.

Visions came to her in those hours of sleep. Nightmares colliding with tales of her past. In flashes fast forwarded.

The Mages, the vial, the strength, the betrayal, the suffering, the redemption, Lady Yean.

A whirlwind of scenes in a whirlpool of emotions. It swirled with the ferocity of a tornado, quick in arrival and quick to subside.

Darkness still pursued as he eyes blinked open, anger and revulsion laying siege
to her face as she sneer and lifted herself up, quickly as her weakened body allowed.

She crawled to the base of a tree, sitting with legs-crossed, awaiting physical strength as she contemplated the sins of her past without regret or shame.

The Narcolepsy has set it from her refusing to return to the aid of magic that
once ran like venom and parasite in her veins, its flames trading their strength
to her ephemerally while they fed on her strength eternally.

"Mage-blood they say is a good medicine" she hissed to herself, letting out a manical laugh.

"The more I suffer, the more I get to consume." he concluded.

Rising slowly, she reached out for her scattered belongings that had spilt from her saddle bag, shoving them back inside mercilessly.

Steaks, canteen, a horn, daggers, goblets of wine and a leather bound brown journal...

The gnome heaved a side of relief as she stood up and continued down the trail, frozen in his stance behind the very same tree.

Dear Tashanya,

I have finally found her. I have trailed her for a two weeks and have finally
caught up to her whereabouts. Her journal is well-guarded with me and her tale
and song is sung and spoken of in the village and Tavern or two. I am still
baffled as to how I shall approach her to return this journal of hers that I
have kept with me, well-guarded.

She has joined the village of magic haters and sings with them as the voice of
the Puritans, such I have gathered from a scroll or two of hers that I came
across. She has mentioned her hatred for Beholders - Those Possessed with Magic
and Puritans - Those devoid of it, and her redemption and journey from one to
another in the later parts of her journal. I shall trail her for a while until
she is gripped with sleep and perhaps slip the journal in her possessions.
I hope things are well at home and my sudden departure has not left you in
a hassle. I write since it has been long that I have been away, but I had to
for my curiosity got the better of me. I wish to speak to her and know of her
better. I must go now. The road beckons to me and my drink is done. I hope for
the scribe to find you in good health and humor.

A Painting at the feet of the Giant.

The gnome made his way up the mountain, peering up the path in caution.
Reaching the Hut of the Sublime he noted it empty... but for a corpse.

Examining the features of the corpse he at once recognized it.

He saw lying beside it a ring of divine magic and a long pommeled sword.
Instinct led him to further quell his curiousity and he walked dowards towards the village.

As he reached the giant, he noticed a paiting lying at the feet of the giant.

The Village was empty. Not a soul in sight. Unwrapping the painting he took a quick glance at it.

In a grim setting with lighting dull as the dusk and detailing accurate as
an elven archer, you notice a young minstrel standing. The side view of her
face has the backdrop of a Sublime hut without much carpeting or furniture.
Two windows in the background, open, display valleys and moutains afar
painted in slight blur and a Godess with a harp in her hand stands by her

side. The side face of the young minstrel seems to adorn a look of comfort
and satisfaction. Her form is blurry and her flesh is seems to be rather
insubstantial. The ugliness of her features, her wrinkled skin and her
receding hairline, all are skillfully potrayed with detailed effect. Not
long before the wonder of her joy, you notice at her feet a stream of blood
flowing from a pool at a corpse placed between her and her Godess. The
features of the corpse are smeared a bit, but the corpse seems to be curled
inward, as it stabbed deep in the torso, by its own doing.

On the floor you notice a black woolen robe, a longsword with etchings and
a ring humming with runes of the divine. The face of the Godess is painted
in two seperate halves. One staring down at the items on the floor and the
other looking upon the minstrel with a mixture of pleasure and displeasure.

As you draw your sight close you notice the same receding hairline, the
wrinkled skin and weakened frame on the corpse you notice it to be of the devotee...

Quietly the gnome began to wrap it as its original state and slipped away quietly, having learnt much.

A Hint of Whispers (in a Tavern)

"The usual." Said the gnome as he poised himself over the barstool.

"Are you fine, Dngagus ? You seem a bit pale." asked the bartender as he efortlessly poured the drink

The gnome shuffled a little in his place, obviously jittery and with pathetic
pretence refuted the bartender's question claiming his own wellness.

"Well, seems like you've seen a ghost or perhaps the Nightmare Woman.." chuckled the bartender as he passed on the drink.

"The Nightmare woman?" said the gnome as he sipped the drink, obvious delight appearing on his face.

"Oh, don't you know? She was spotted down the road. The children of the city
were pelting stones at her and tied all sorta stuff to her hair while she was
asleep. The poor wench, she is almost bald too. Far from a pretty sight." came the reply.

The bartender paused slightly, placing aside the glasses he was cleaning and
leaned over to the gnome. "Some of the men thought she was'a witch." he whisperd.

The gnome took in the conversation if well-faked shock and surprise. Inquiring about her whereabouts.

The bartender resumed his work, shrugging slightly.

With a brief but awefully silent pauses the replied "Some have spotted her lingerning near the Temple of Lady Yean."

The gnome quickly bounced off his stool, placing two coins of gold on the bar and made his way through the crowd towards the door.

The bartender wrinkled his eyebrows a bit in surprise.

"Seems I shocked the poor lad" He uttered to another customer, chuckling to himself.

Ruhktanshi's Journal II

The gnome gulps a bit and taps his handkerchief on his sweaty forehead.
He continues to feed his curiosity and flips the page. The next few pages only
present to him etchings, drawings and symbols.. the only one recognizable to
him is that of a sword cross with a flute hovering over a hut. A few blank
pages later another passges catches his attention..

Day of the Bull, Month of Spring.

*the script is written in blood but much darker in character and more legible*

The sleep beckons to me at the strangest of hours and I find myself to be
weaken than what I used to be. I am offered sympathy and help at each town
that I visit, and it angers me beyond the expression of words. I lunged at
the last one and drilled a hole with my bare fingernails in his disrespeting
throat. My travels continue to search the blessed abode of Lady Yean, I have
heard her of her ways of strength and knowledge and they suit me well. I
found the village where I shall seek home, for they dwell their spirit where
my soul seeks to perch. The difficult path seems to fail it's match to the
grit of my will and strength of my soul. Concussions and narcolepsy do not
seem to do anything more than slow down my march to my goal.

I have created a harp from my own flesh and bone and my wounds heals well.
I have stood in the lonely grove and oathed my flesh and blood to avenge
the blight of my past. This harp shall serve me as a reminder and this pain
shall keep my anger young. I shun all revelry and have forsaken all things that
are charitable or undeserved. They only blemish the soul with weakness and
want. I wander the land in search of errands to run and aid others, much do
learn from aiding them and it garners my inner strengths and gives me reason
to trudge further down the path towards my goal. Time alone will bear
testimony to my fate, but with my harp and my faith I have none and nothing
to fear. Many on my path have come to call me 'Il'Cha'Ashama'Ghara' or the
nightmare lady in local common-speak: perhaps addressing the life I lead or
perhaps the visual ugliness of my physical self, but it time I shall be a
crimson nightmare to those who gifted me the unnatural sleep.

Name: ked the gnome as he glanced upon her.
She slowly raised her gaze and replied with an indifferent look and a quick
turn of her head. Taking another step forward, she stumbled and collapsed
to the group like an empty sack.

As the darkness withdrew and he eyes slowly opened she found herself in the
dwelling of the gnome. He slowly approached her as he saw her return to her
senses.

'Here, have this, it shall grant you some strength..' he said as he handed her a glass vial with a greenish liquid.

Her lips quivered and a strange hissing sound emerged, her eyes rolled and
revulsion almost immediately gripped her face.

'Away, Take it away. You bastard. Take it away before I slit your throat
with my figernails...' she whispered weakly.

The frightened gnome took a step back, dropping the vial as it fell to the
floor, shattered and spilt.

She stood up and slowly walked out of the room. The gnome frozen in place.
As she left, the gnome quickly sighted a small log-journal remaining where
she lay, he rushed to it and grabbed it and darted out of the room to catch
up to her. But as he emerged outside his dwelling and looked down the long
strech of road, she was nowhere to be seen...

Three days had passed, the gnome has since often had nightmares about the
woman, her pale demeanour and the bone and flesh harp at her waist. He had
awaited her to return, perhaps when she realized that she had left behind her
journal but there had been no word since... with restless curiosity he decided
to flip it open, perhaps in hopes of finding where he might go to return it.

Month of Deception, Month of the Grand Struggle.

This magic has led to me face my horrors. I am weak beyond measure and I
tremble to lift this quill. The strength of the vials has diminshed and all
the Order of Magic has to offer to repair my loss was quaffing more of them.
My body was nothing more to them but a husk for experimentation. Not just
mine but that of my kin, my cousins, I should have known better than to
lay trust in the hands of these elves. Fight the dark we shall, they said but
I cannot even fight the fatigue that lulls me to sleep at this moment.

I refused to be any further a part of their ersatz Order that preaches magics
that only corrupt the soul and make you weaker by the passing day, weaker
only to quaff further to become stronger and then weaker again. It is only a
matter of time before I turn into the wenches I often wondered about that
were locked up in the groaning dungeons beneath the laboratories. The bastard
said I shall not survive without the vial, if my yearning for the touch of
that liquid is not quenched it shall consume my body by the month.
Little do they know, I shall prove them wrong. I shall grow, however difficult
my path and however thorn-laden my path to redemption, I shall find the
strength within and fight off this corruption, now that my spirit it clean
my body shall be cleansed, by myself and myself alone. Never again shall I
bear trust in my bosom, for my burdens are mine alone and my demons that I
spar with are not capable enough to kill me... only capable enough to leave
me stronger. I sha...

'Redemption'

Dead of the night. A Forest Grove. A shrill scream. Flapping Frightened Doves
in flight. Silence. Again.

Ruhktanshi crawled, silent with all the pain that she was in siege of and
managed to reach by the edge of the pond. Cupping some water in her hands
she managed it over her spurting wounds for cleansing. With a grith of the
teeth she quickly patched her carved out flesh, now washed and cleaned, with
a tight knot of some loosely torn rags of cloth.

Heavy breathing. Early brink of dawn. Fresh vision. Consciousness Regained. Silence... Still.

Slow the skinny frame of Rukhtanshi, shrivelled, wrinkled, skinny to the bone:
gathered itself to rise (and much to the amusement of the Gods) and slowly
she strode out of her own pool of blood and chunks of strewn flesh, harp in
hand, a harp carved of her own flesh.

Silent Stride. A soul redeemed. Magic's wastes now Nature's stream. Seeming weak, spirit strong. Bloodied husk of a wench. Stroke of morn, on she strode. With harp made of her flesh and bone.
