Description

Standing before you, just shy of four feet in height, is a short, stocky
svirfnebli resembling a grey boulder. His physique is superb, with not
an ounce of fat showing on his well-chiseled body. Covering this marvel
is an array of exquisitely polished armors that are well taken care of.
His chest is barreled and quite wide in comparison to others of his kind,
yet in proportion to his massive arms and legs, it seems rather ordinary.
A plume of inky jet-black hair cascades from under his helmet, resting
neatly on his boulder-like shoulders. His eyes are barely visible from
behind his helm's visor, as if he does not wish you to read his intentions.

Chapter 8

The Diagnosis

I wait in the examining room - a small, cramped hole carved crudely into the
tunnel's stone wall. Mother is pacing back and forth in the hallway, but
Father keeps me company. The doctor is always late.

I look in the dirt-streaked mirror bolted to one wall of the room - I know
I'm small, the smallest of my Mother's eight children in fact, but I've been
working hard lately to add some muscle, and I'm always trying to see if there
are any results to my countless hours in my school's small gymnasium. I
tighten the muscles in my chest - Yes! Maybe they are getting a bit bigger.

'Now, Kikebi,' Dr. Bortis breaks my line of thought. 'We have to explain to
you a very serious situation, and we need you to be mature. Other doctors
might want to keep you in the dark, but I think it's better for you to know
the truth.'

I hate it when adults ask me to be mature. I'm not a kid any more. I can
handle anything. I nod to the doctor to continue. Mom sits down next to me
and grasps my hand.

'We've done some tests and they show you will develop the wasting disease.
I want you to know this is not your fault. There's nothing anybody could
have done. You were born with this condition.'

'What is it?' I ask, my voice barely audible. Mom squeezes my hand hard
enough to make my wrist hurt.

'It is a rare disease. But we have learned a lot about it. That small lump
you felt on your neck? Well, it's growing slowly, and quite possibly
spreading throughout your body. By the size of the lump, and seeing that
you've grown so little compared to your kin, I believe you've got a pretty
severe case and it's likely that symptoms will start to appear soon, if they
haven't already.'

'What symptoms?' I want to ask, but I can't speak. My head is spinning
trying to understand what the hell he's talking about. I feel fine. I know
when I'm sick. I've been working out and getting bigger and stronger.

The doctor catches my eye and starts to explain the symptoms. 'There are
psychological and motor disorders. They develop over a period of about
fifteen years. They make it difficult for you to control your body's
movements.'

'I won't be able to move?' My face pales. My eyes squint. It doesn't make
sense.

'Well, not quite. You'll be able to move clumsily. And you may have a twitch.
In the later stages, many patients have tremors and writhing movements beyond
their control. The psychological disorders begin to develop at this time, and
may manifest as depression, poor memory, anxiety, or hallucinations. I know
some fine doctors at the Academy who are working to find a cure. And in time,
they may. But right now, as we understand it, the disease is fatal.'

Chapter 7

Depression begins to set in.

When the sun comes up Monday morning, I go to school like nothing's changed.
My classes have passed pretty painlessly for me. I'm a good student. I like
to think it's similar to the militia army I intended to sign up for when I
graduated. You do what you're told when you're told, and you don't get in much
trouble. No decisions to worry about. Maybe even pick up a few laughs along
the way.

Not now. Not anymore.

Rumors begin to fly that I'm dying and will not make it to graduation. I
overhear a student I don't even recognize whispering to his lunch table, 'Word
is that runt caught the plague from some prostite up in Hillcrest.' I try to
eat my lunch with my friend Shuol as usual, but it's impossible. The popular
girls who have never noticed me invite me to sit at their table. When I
politely decline them, two other girls from my English class join my own
table. The homely one tries to buy me lunch, but I already have a sandwich.

'What are you going to do now?' one asks.
What kind of question is that? 'I'm going to run naked through the school.'
They laugh. It's a bit forced. 'And I'm going to fart a lot.' They groan.

'Seriously, you should travel. See the world.'

'Yeah, good idea.' But it's not. I hate museums and wagon-rides and foreign
inn's beds. I'd rather just play tag and 'Tribunal and Outlander' with
Shuol.

These sorts of conversations, complete with bubbly hand-waving hellos and
pity hug good-byes, last all week.

Friday night, Shuol takes me out for drinks. We claim two stools at our
local tavern, and for the special. The drinks don't look all that special,
but they do have a bit of kick.

I wonder what the bartender's secret ingredient is. These drinks are
pretty hot. A touch of fire maybe...

I've lost track of how many drinks I've had. Everything is spinning now.
I'm really, really drunk.

Chapter 6

An Outcast

I haven't changed, but everybody else sure has. The school assembled all of
my fellow students into one room in an attempt to raise awareness about my
disease and get the facts correct. My doctor came down from his office and
lectured everyone about the specifics about the wasting disease for more than
an hour. Needless to say, my classmates enjoy one of the few nap times since
infancy.

Now, everyone looks at me funny - pityingly.

When I return home from school, Mother asks how classes are going. 'They're
all right.' I roll my eyes. 'Why do you have to be so nosy anyway? I'm not
flunking out, alright?' I shouldn't yell at her like this. She's always
wanted me to be successful and secure. But I can't tell her how I really feel.
Everything I had ever taken for granted in life has changed. You marry. You
have kids. You raise a family. You earn a living. But not me. None of that
applies.

Not now. I must escape my life.

Chapter 5

My goals

I will not let my disease rattle my spirit, nor will I allow others to remind
me of my mortality. I cannot. I would rather die alone, curled up under a
rock, than feel the pitying stares from everyone I know.

I must hide my symptoms as best I can as they develop and learn to pass off
those I cannot mask as something else. I have already begun to stutter some,
but noone has seemed to notice or care. Let them them think I'm a nervous
wreck. I don't care. They won't pity me for that. Perhaps they'll even
underestimate me. I don't mind that.

I have begun to twitch slightly, but it is barely noticible. I will work
harder than ever on my fighting abilities in order to build my strength. A
strong body should be able to minimize many of my physical symptoms. I don't
wish people to feel sorry for me, so I will not show any weaknesses,
regardless of how crippled I feel within.

I must do what I can to learn how to combat my disease, by any means necessary.
I will seek out the Lords of the Realm, as well as their priests, masters of
magic and any others who may provide some insight into curing my disease.

Chapter 4

Grounded and calm

I was born under the sphere of Earth, and I've always wondered if my entire
existence is a test to determine if I was a well-tempered, well grounded
individual. It would make sense, wouldn't it? Earth, ground... who knows?
What I do know is that I've tried very hard to maintain a positive outlook
on life - if it's going to be short, it might as well be fruitful, no? I've
wandered from healer to healer in the cities I've visited, and though they
all seem to have cures for the plague, poison, and various other diseases,
none seem to have any cures for my ailment. I've tried the curative herbs
of rangers and druids, as well as a painful mending at the hands of a curious
transmuter. No luck. But I'll keep trying. What else is there to do?

On a good note, my condition hasn't visibly deteriorated at all yet. Yes,
I still stutter a bit, and my voice does get a little funny sometimes, but
I've been able to keep my tremors and twitches to a minimum - and that's
something to be thankful for. Ever since I left home and have hid my
illness from everyone, I've felt a great weight on my shoulders, but also
uplifted at the same time. So odd! But, I'm not pitied anymore, which has
been great. I've been judged on my own merits and not my limitations.
However, I do bear the burden of a great secret. I want to burst of
frustruation and anger sometimes when I stammer and stutter and can't get
the words out out my mouth when I want to speak, so I repress my feelings
and maintainan outward calm. I am of the Earth, and I must remain grounded.

Chapter 3

Weapon Choices

You'd be surprised how many people are confused by the fact that I have
wielded polearms for most of my life. They all comment and snicker about
how the weapon is bigger than I am. None of this bothers me. Not one bit.
Let them underestimate me. Let them think that I'm a fool for using a weapon
that may not be one most suited to my stature. Little do they know that the
polearm functions quite well as a walking staff that allows me to use it as
a crutch on days my legs are shaky. What they will find out, if they strike
me, is that by learning to balance this unwieldy pike, I have been able to
grow the strength in my arms and legs to mammoth proportions. I am chiseled
from stone! Truly, I am.

On a similar vein, when my guildmaster allows me to train with him further,
I think I will take up the dagger. Lugging around my pikes is quite taxing,
and being able to carry something light alongside should keep be from being
overly burdened by weaponry. As it is, I try carry as little as possible
in order to conserve my strength as best I can, when I can. Though I am
strong now, there may come a day where I will have to rely on dirty fighting
in my battles. I must look towards the future, illness be damned.

Chapter 2

Nexus, Guardians of Balance

It was a very difficult decision for me, joining the Nexus, and perhaps it
was also a selfish one. I have exhausted many means of curing the disease
that rattles me from within, but there are powerful magics coursing through
the inner workings of the Nexus that one can only dabble in from within. I
heard many things concerning the Nexun's ability to bond with one another,
and I'm thinking that if perhaps if I can bond with a strong enough
magician or priest, they will be able to diagnose me more throughly than
the means currently available to most mortals. As of yet, I haven't found
many suitable bond partners, but I will leave no stone unturned.

The duties of the Nexus are challenging, bur exciting as well. Thera, much
like my body, has an infinite number of entities moving in an infinite number
of directions, with each one doing what it wishes. A very fickle entity,
really. Small fluctuations in any one direction can cause Thera's health to
suffer, much like my heath suffers. It is easier, however, to control the
major tuggings of this world, and if I cannot end up healing the ailments of
my body, perhaps I might be able to assist in healing the ailments of the
world instead.

Chapter 1

A slow deterioration begins

Damn! As predicted by my doctor so long ago, my health has noticibly begun
to deteriorate, at least to me. My arms are shakier, my voice less steady,
and my resolve less secure. However, either noone has noticed, or are too
involved in their own selves to care or comment. It *IS* definitely clear
to anyone who cared that I'm suffering, but alas. Maybe I'm being selfish
in my own right for thinking that someone might take notice. But haven't
I been sympathetic to Pelrin about his lack of luck in finding a mate? And
why he wants to find someone to bear him children is a joke in it's own
right. He's so high on himself that he selfishly believes his progeny will
be properly inclined to carry on his research after his death. He says
he tries to maintain the balance of Thera, but can't even balance his own
enlarged ego! Yet, since he does perform great wonders in maintaining the
overall balance of light and dark, order and chaos, and helps to keep the
veil at it's proper level, I have excused this unbalanced vanity as a quirk
of his nature. I even went as far as to find some trinkets that I thought
might help in his quest, yet he scoffed at them and gave them right back.

I have even hinted to him that I wished to investigate using our bond to
see if we can't heal what rattles me from within, yet he has shown little
interest, even going as far as saying he believes that he's held in high
regard as a lone wolf, a "Vanguard of Balance", or so he says. It gives
me little hope that I may be able to tap into the healings of a transmuter
to cure me from within.

There is a young deckhand healer working his way up the ranks that may
be able to help me... he seems a friendly sort. I'll see if I can't
help speed his progress along...
