Waris the Devil of the Arena, Advisor to the Chancellor
DescriptionA stocky darkskinned figure stands here watching its surroundings with a wary gleam in its amber colored and slightly offset eyes. A black tangled mop of corse hair tumbles from under his headwear somewhat obscuring its grotesque and mishapen face. A dirty and somewhat stylized beard does little to hide the frozen snarl of his glossy black lips. His nose would be his most normal feature if it didn't look like it had been broken in several places at one time or another. Oddly though this creature is largely encrusted in muck and grime he smells largely of sour earth and ancient air. His movements seem almost unsure and stiff though faster than would be expected of his stocky frame. He walks in a almost jagged quick sort of point to point sort of way. This strange creature all in all looks somewhat out of place.

22322, Waris's Role Chapter 12

RoleChapter 12 Doors best left unlocked. Added Wed Feb 27 18:35:14 2008 at level 11:In the deep darkness, below the mines of Voralia a great thunderous boom sent showers of dust raining down on the bald and sun spotted head of Thimortigan Shinndimp. He sat staring down amidst the scurring figures from his perch high to the side of the massive machine. He had long dreamed of the day of finding the lost mines of Delar'Tol, to plunder its locked away secrets in a time when its guardians would have largely crumbled. Today he would see to his vision. He had brought a veritable army of help, svirfniblin guards, the Hillcrest drilling and excavation society, and a assortment of characters too lengthy to describe. He could see the various groups doing their individual tasks from his high perch though it was difficult to differentiate between them. They had spent many months constructing the massive machine after spending nearly two hundred years trying to find a way to open the ancient doors. The design was simple in theory, it was a massive construction using various magics and sciences to build a machine who's purpose was to destroy any physical barrier.
Another person was too waiting for this day, though the time he had spent contimplating in the darkness made the gnomes wait seem inconsquential to say the least. Nearly two thousand years had passed he thought quietly to himself. They left me here in the darkness not knowing I even existed. Years of slaughter to the so called God serpent Yzekon, and tainted magics gave me form and knowledge of my existance. I have waited long since my intial thought to this faithful day. It wasn't too long after I found form that I found hunger, I fed on those I found alone in the deep depths only to find myself seeking larger and larger prey. My hunger led to my discovery with the fall of the creature known as Yzekon I sought to feed on the straggling duergar. In my hunger filled lust I did not notice the great door slowly rumbling shut. The High priest sought to seal the great secrets within for all eternity. I knew time would bring the power hungry the greedy searching these dark depths. Though time has withered my power I will find the strength to feed upon those who are gifted with what I am not.
The hungry shadow escaped its tomb with a angry hiss as the great door seal was finally broken. Most of the creatures looked around in great fear seeming to seek an exit, though the shadowy mist that escaped seemed realitively harmless as it slithered into the shadows and crags vanishing from sight. The small creatures didn't know what they had unleashed that day, and likely wouldn't for some time. The shadowy spirit sought to avoid the gnomes seeking to assilimate with what it was familiar with.

Tue Aug 12 09:16:26 2008 by 'Lyristeon' at level 51 (483 hrs): cont'd from above...Not one I would use, but, then again, can it really be called a tactic when you do that almost every time? Here is an example of why some folks just don't get the love they think they deserve.

He doesn't consider most of his work to be his finest but to some end, he believes he has succeeded in his aims. Grasping at what straws he can he struggles to maintain the fear and hatred held for him.
He does find himself somewhat distant from the words of Enlilth at times, but he knows well he does the dark Devourers work well. The world trembles at his name, the Chasm is his and his aims continue with each passing day. That is his aims to gather enough power to continue on as his form fades enough souls leech to one day again rebirth in a newer stronger form.
Many have come to call Waris a coward and a spineless whelp. Waris doesn't have much concern for the nay sayers of Thera, believing that his success is his success and they are merely jealous that they cannot obtain similiar.
His aims within the Chasm have not faltered, seeking ever a new means to deal with his most despised foe the Tree and haven of the Outlanders of the Thar-Eris. The ancient spirits and like minded treefargers as Waris knows them despise what Waris is and has become, an abomination to everything they believe in. His research has carried him far. He does often wonder if it will be possible to complete his work before the envitable demise of his mortal shell.

RoleChapter 2 A clash of dark and light. Added Thu Aug 21 09:13:12 2008 at level 51:With a pained gasp the Archmage collapses to the ground, reliquishing the Ebony scepter to the seven bloodthirsty Maran standing deep in the Chasm. Only four of their number could fight the creature, but it was hoped that with the aid of the transmuter that would be enough.
Not far from the chasm, a aged and scarred duergar curses loudly as he scrambles to meet the retreating Maran in Hamsah and prepare for fight he faces in the process.
Mizfara and Humbert look at each other knowingly as the disfigured and hated creature is spotted in the desert, this would not be an easy fight. But perhaps they could this time force the creatures hand and end him once and for all.
Waris stood just south of the gate of Sihaam, sweating somewhat in the desert sun and somewhat from the fight ahead. Briefly wondering if he hadn't forgotten anything, he was broken from his revelry as without warning the Marans arrived and with a fiercesome cry and light and energy pouring from their eyes, clashed against the dark aura of magic and steel that is Waris.
Briefly Waris felt a failing since of hope as the fight seemed poorly in his favor, but despite his inablity to do anything but defend himself and simply keep his weapons moving the fight turned in his favor. Abruptly a chill pierced his soul, terror struck his mind as he realised he had forgotten to remove the infernal ring. He could only watch as the fight bore on, bring Humbert to his death, then shortly after Llondonthas. His face taught in pain, Waris could only observe as Kernagor stood for a time, clearly near death himself as he debated on striking the duergar one last time.
Before the dwarf could make up his mind a tingling surge filled Waris's body as his muscles responded again, turning on his heel Waris decided to accept this near defeat turned victory and leave before the dwarf made up its mind.

22313, Waris's Role Chapter 3
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 3 Schemes Added Sat Jun 7 18:50:55 2008 at level 51:Coniving in the dark and often alone Waris, contemplates the whispers of Eshval of a traitor to the Chasm. "Oi, mahaps dem be useful in pullin deh whole down wit em, somehow ter bring deh plotters togeder ter be crushed at once." he muses outloud. A brief look of worry scrunches his already mishapen face into something of a scowl. "Mahaps them bein conspirin against me alone. Mah has ter know."
With that he set out a various series of scouts of various trust and pay. Some like Mlu-something whom Waris payed a hefty sum and promised more simply for information on his various participants of the prophecy. Others like Jil whom are useful simply to test and strain those of the Chasm he mistrusts. At the moment he simply mistrusts the three most recent at his hand, Sessarian Tirka and Khurga. Using Jil he tests their alliances and trust in each other, though Waris knows well Jil will eventually catch on and demand payment for his services. It is his intention to push Jil till his use is gone and discard him for the tool he is.
Hundreds of life times of experience before Waris and the Prophecy seems as far from him as it did to the first long ago that heard its whispered promise. A few of his dark cousins had unsuccessfully in some means or another to bargain with the Ccul'Gra most experiments ending in agonizing death. Unpreturbed Waris has searched much of the world for clues of how to open the portals to see the final dusk and the days end. Various speculations have come to mind, but his limited knowledge and understanding of the magic and machinery involved he can only create rough outlines, vague guesses some might say. It could be speculated that one could turn the machine that Khardrath created to force a tear between the two planes, one would need to merely understand how to force it to reach the negative plane. Waris can only speculate that this would require a much greater source of power to reach the lower planes. Other guesses have been tried before, attempts to manipulate portals already existing in Thera, though it is Waris's belief that if its failed once, it'll probably fail the farg again.
Waris continues to set his eyes higher on the World around him, having pleased his Lords wish to see him in a place of power to control the Chasm. Waris wonders what his Lord would have him do now, perhaps even speculating on how daring Enlilth truely is. Waris knows well his Lord see's through his thinnely vieled plans. He does little to hide it, though he wouldn't likely know what to do if Enlilth confronted him directly on the matter. As he see's it, he "merely" seeks the world, the heavens and all above below and around them. It is all the thing that is Waris, truely understands. To consume and devour. To Use.
In light of recent suicide rates, Waris's worry of a traitor has lessened somewhat. Though eased, he still would be guessing as to who it could possibly be.

RoleChapter 4 Wishful dreams of silence and terror. Added Tue May 13 00:10:02 2008 at level 51:The paladins strength began to wane each palm was blistered and raw from clutching his weapons tightly. Defending himself from each rentless blow from the seemingly tireless duergar and the ever present shadows that seem too numerous to count. With each strike he called upon the lord Corrlaan begging for his mercy, for his strength to strike down this horrible creature. His heart welled with hope as his blade struck true with a terrible hiss and splatter of black blood as a great beam of light focused from the heavens above enveloped the foul creatures showing them my lords vengeful wrath. Snarling in anger the creature wasted no time waiting for the knight to recover from his strike and dashed from the midst of the battle.
Suprised at his seeming victory, the paladin made move only to protect himself from the shadows left in the creatures wake. Though dangerous the Paladin knew that they would leave with their master. As it dawned on the paladin that infact the creatures weren't leaving at all but seeming to grow in number, it was too late.
A blood curdling howl, and a snarling of what could only be the words of magic. The paladin turned from his the nightwalkers at hand and to the sound of speaking. The two combatants locked gazes briefly the paladins tired blue meeting the one frozen amber eye that seemed to fill his vision. The paladin made move to defend himself from the next blow but it never came. Instead he found himself captured in the words of magic and by the dark pupil in its oasis of frozen amber waves. Darkness filled his vision and chilled him to his very core, he felt somehow utterly alone in the world. Though his lord was far he remember briefly the now distant thoughts of his lord and the times of silence and meditation. A brutal blow breaks him from his trance sending him sprawling across the ground, true fear begins to well in his heart as even in himself and his lords teachings he cannot find the Hope to continue. Another blow and the knight feels his life ebbing he raised his hand once more, not to ward the next blow but in prayer. Corrlaan never heard it though as Waris drives his blade heavily into the upturned face of the dying Paladin with a gleeful grunt of "Oi!"

22315, Waris's Role Chapter 5
Posted by Death_Angel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RoleChapter 5 Another general update on Waris. Added Sat Apr 26 00:51:14 2008 at level 51:Though Waris finds his strength somewhat dimished by a mishap in his meddlings with the Aifeth Yll, he knew he was on his way to the power he had just barely gotten a taste of. The fury of the souls power he had trapped was as blessed to him, as it was fleeting on the swirling currents of the maelstrom. He occassionally finds himself wondering what N'shmael would do with such a thing, but mostly focuses his attention on the task at hand, the path to keeping his meager strength while collecting more power and avoiding his untimely demise.
As the Advisor to Igbah, Waris is somewhat troubled at times with the difficulties of managing the various whelps that find themselves fancied by Igbah. As well as the incessant cries of attention from the young and helpless, though occassionally promising. Waris feels he is resonably accomidated for his troubles, though of course he always hungers for more. He is pleased with his Advisorship though only mildly as he has his eyes only for the step beyond being the mere Advisor or Chancellor of the Chasm.
In his dreams, well beyond his hopes. He reaches for absolute control of the Chasm, bringing forth the outpouring of darkness alone. Earning the rights to the prophecy, taking them all for himself. Wresting power from the gods, seeking a place to burrow into the fabric of the world and existance itself seeking to fill his never ending hunger.
Waris occassionally finds himself somewhat troubled by the somewhat indifference of his great lord, simply a non-chalant and pointless word of acknowledgement. Wondering if perhaps he had created some notion in the gods mind that Waris was not his faihful subject at all. Though, Waris would undoubtably go to the highest bidder, someone-anyone he would feel would be more inclined to help him achieve his aims.
So Waris lurks somewhat obscured by his dimished power, waiting for his chance to leech the unwary. Hoping that the next one will sate his ceaseless hunger.

22316, Waris's Role Chapter 6

RoleChapter 6 General update. Added Fri Apr 18 23:09:11 2008 at level 51:Tense in the knowledge that his existance, and the many others before him all came to this moment. Should he not find success here he would be like the many duergar who make up his being, a failure at life. Another sacrifice to striving and hungry darkness.
He didn't kneel he didn't bow, infact he grunted, a little annoyed with the somewhat nonchalant gaze of Enlilth. Whose grandous arrival was heralded by a truimphant sound. Waris flashed a fake but almost winsome smile at the god, secure in the knowledge that they both knew that they want the same thing.
Utter domination, truely to have everything.
Though eventually they might come to some disagreement on who exactly is going to end up with all of the power, Waris knew begrudgingly it was best to show his respect of the god. Even though Waris doesn't show it he holds a great respect and admiration for the creature and god known as Enlilth.
He produced an artifact he had known of for some time, waiting for the right moment to produce it from the wandering trails of the world. A perfect sphere of stone, the now dead Advisor Shenkovs final lich item. Placing the treasure in Enlilths open palm. Waris grumbled quietly to himself as Enlilth spoke of his pleasure in his pawns success, and eyed Waris with a new found respect.
Ever greedy, Waris of course hoped for some grand reward, perhaps a army of fallen angels or bringing him Igbah's head on a platter and handing the Chasm to him. Waris of course didn't get anything of the sort. Infact he found himself seeking new ways to please the Conquerer.
To find his own path to a seat of power in the Chasm, something Waris had had in his machinations for a while as it was so this was somewhat of reassurance that they wanted the same thing.
Enlilth also expressed his great dislike of Macha, Waris was happy to oblige his lord and slay her not long after. As well as collecting the soul of Jhoqu he has decided to aim to collect from each leader in the tree leaving only Vrekosek to strengthen Waris.

Added Wed Apr 9 03:33:05 2008 at level 44:A few bored looking patrons of the inn peer across a round smokey table glancing occassionally at their companions then the cards the clutch fiercly in the hands. One elf looks down at the chips and across the table at a smug looking dwarf paladin before opening his mouth in a apparent attempt to speak when his words are cut off in wet gurgle. With a green tinge to his face he quietly removes himself from the table and scurries off to the inns back lot. The other members of the table seem somewhat puzzled only then noticing the once boisterous band is now deathly quiet and the racious laughter from the bar has stifled into a few coughs and mutterings.
Standing just in the torchlight a armored and dishevled look dwarf assesses his surroundings with one gleaming amber eye. It's black almost soot colored face is twisted into a deformed grimace worsened by the apparent attempt to smile. His armor glints darkly in the dim and smokey light of the inn, but the symbols of hatred and terror are unmistakeable. At the end of his arm a massive buldge seems to meet an ancient dragon claw almost a horrible extension of his limb, in his other hand he holds a shield high to his chest peering warily over it.
The duergar grins to himself as his keen ears catch several conversations from those who thought they were out of earshot. "Thats Waris chaps, I hear he once dropped a hundred babies on their heads after hearing the Lords of Terror and chaos pay one strong soul for every hundred children" Said one ranger grimly from a back corner. "I've heard that if you sprinkle holy water on him he'll turn to ash." Whispered a terrified looking paladin "Rumors say that he's the son of the devil himself sent here because he was too ugly for the terrors of hell itself!" Slurred a drunkin bard.
Assurred in his safety he strolled up to the bar and sat down inbetween two uncomfortable looking gnomes. Pointing at the one with a slightly trembling upper lip he said to Olin "This little bugger said 'es got mah tab for the night." He pauses and leans over to whisper into the gnomes ear. "Didn'cha?" The little creature gasps slightly for air before going chalk white and collapsing with a thud to the barfloor. Waris grunts loudly to himself and grabs the gnomes half consumed bottle of wine. "Oi, this'll be a good start, drinks all around on mah sleepin friend!"

RoleChapter 8 The betrayal of Shenkov. Added Fri Mar 28 02:26:43 2008 at level 40:Waris awoke one day hearing word of the demise of the once Advisor Shenkov. Waris blinked somewhat absently at the news and set forth on his day. Eventually his travels took him to a strangle jungle island, he trudged through the undergrowth for many hours grumbling most of the way. Passing to a strange intersection he marched up a mountain at the islands very edge seeming to seek something. Hours of searching seem to prove fruitless when suddenly he lets out a cry of outright glee. In a grubby hand he snatches a perfect sphere of stone that has settled comfortably into the earth not far from looming death. He chuckles to himself for several moments polishing the small sphere on his sleeve. "Oi, I told yer deh Chasm will be mine mate. Nothin yer can do ter stop me." He grunts a moment and stares longingly into the night sky. "Yer said no liches Enlilth, dats one for yer. I held mah tongue fer many years bidin my time hopin no one would discover dis place." Grinning to himself he continues, "I even told em this place was clear, nothin ter see on deh strange Island!" Cackling madly to himself he utters the word "Teleport" in the strange language of magic and vanishes into the dawning morning.

RoleChapter 9 A new beat to the same old song. Added Mon Mar 17 17:53:13 2008 at level 40:Perhaps at some point in the past, one of the great warlords of Yzekon had done dealings with the Ccul'Gra. Or perhaps the Ccul'Gra were involved in the darkrituals practiced in the depths of the world where they remain forgotten.
Either way, Waris knows this tune and has played the beat before. The Ccul'Gra seek the material world, and they will do anything in their power to get what they want. Time and time again they have betrayed those who have sought their aid in exchange for freedom. With the experience of a thousand lives, Waris has little doubt the Ccul'Gra will resort to their old habits. Though the prophecy itself represents more of a contract between those who would dare such a bargain, and those who know no such accordances. Binding the two parties in their mutual fate.
Those who would dare are known as the foolish the ignorant and the brave, protectors and bringers of the plague that is the night itself. Not only guardians of the Chasm, a place where the shadow meets the material. But bringers of the Prophecy itself, fed off the strength of the night. The Ccul'Gra are those who know no such bindings, only knowing their insatable hunger. Though some would fancy them to sit idly, waiting for their chance to come again. The truth is that they are always seeking means to escape their prison and feed on the fresh terrors of the world.
His experiences seperate all held reservations and warnings for the prophecy, but the collective life that is Waris has found new meaning in the past. The Ccul'Gra have always turned on weakness seeking it out, finding that one chink in even the strongest of armor. Weakness breeds in this filthy world, Waris himself is a imperfect image. The souls of a thousand failed kings queens and generals, sacrificed in the name of Yzekon for their failings.
Waris having sought the advise of Enlilth, payed heed to his wise words. Opposed to embracing his greed and simply betraying the Ccul'Gra when the time is ripe. He contimplates the use of the Prophecy. Knowing his time in the world is limited in the material form, always wondering when the day will come when he eventually will no longer have the strength to maintain his physical form. Despite the power he leeches from the living and the bond with the Ccul'Gra he knows his time will run out. Fearing that without the proper amount of magic and fresh souls to feed upon he will fade away after that. But were he to use the Prophecy to create a perfect world, a world of torture and horror. A place where only the strongest survive, only to appeal to the whims of the remaining inheritants to the world, those who had embraced the Prophecy of the Night. He might beable to create a means to extend his life, and even to take the form of another to extend his own life.

RoleChapter 10 Hungry speculation. Added Wed Mar 5 02:03:31 2008 at level 28:For a time Waris wandered the wide world with a hunger for more as his only companion. A hunger alike a deep disatisfaction, always nawing at him leaving an empty place that no material pleasure can seem to sate.
His understanding of the guilds teachings seem to come in a uncanny and rapid fashion almost as though he has done it all before. As with a number of other things the knowledge of how to cause pain and death seems deep seated in his shadowy mind. One might speculate this is because of the many souls of duergar that is algimation of his concious mind. It would explain how no matter where his journies take him why something in his mind demands recognition, seeking to relive ancient memories of conquest and battles long since past. It could also have been the many years of watching the horrible acts done in the name of Yzekon and then a long time to contemplate them all a fixiation of torture. Waris himself likely say its both, thousands of years of combined experience from the fallen kings, queens, and ancient priests. All fallen in the name of Yzekon dark magics and hate bringing to life the creature who calls itself Waris.
Though one might speculate this creature would be by terms immortal. He is not though in many ways he might be. He is only truely immortal if he sought to retained his somewhat insubstantial shadow form. The pleasures of the world are too numerous to number as his hunger. And as with all things that seek physical shape in the material world they find themselves vunerable through this physical representation. So though his breaths may be shallow they seek life and though his blood is not red the loss of the thick oily substance is still death. Though true physical death is possible, it could be said that should he die in the right place his essence again would find form were it to find itself in a place of death however unlikely.

RoleChapter 11 Humble beginings, even for a shadow. Added Wed Feb 27 19:21:03 2008 at level 11:Seeping slowly through the holes and forgotten passages in the earth it found its dark way to the depths of Aran-gird. Though not the Children of Yzekon these creatures too worshiped a false and lost god. It watched the dark dwarves for many years, seeking to assimilate itself into their world. Most would likely think of soul sucking shadows as irrational primative things of hunger and lust, it had found itself with a long time to brood in its prison. Thinking of how its hunger had led it to this fate, how only the hunger of anothers greed would free it from the entombment. The imprisonment forged a new purpose within, a urge to assilimate as it fed on the various souls of the world. A quest to understand the things that seemed to come so natural to living things.
Creating the name Waris from their complex language Waris Aruk'Malvo or roughly A forgotten shadow. Such titling names were not uncommon so the day a particularly ugly dwarf came and signed himself up to serve in the kings mines, he was treated in the same barely living fashion as the rest of those who sought the kings favor for a right as a citizen.
He worked hard in the mines, living largely off energies of the slaves fortunate enough to find themselves found unworthy to work any longer in the cruel mines of the king. Though the beaten and worked todeath bodies provided little sustance Waris survived. When he completed his services to the kings mines he was instructed to ask the kings Advisor how he could best serve the King. Though Waris was never entirely certain if the Advisor was able to see through his poor disguise he did certainly send him far away claiming that Waris had a great talent for the mortal brutal form of magic use, sorcery and sword. But it was neccessary to send him to distant Arkham to train in secret to best serve the king.
With time he came to admire and even envy the great King Grenlath, as a boy he too had served in these mines and the great city above him. Realising that though he had the power to consume all that was in his realm, able to devour all within sight and reach. The great king chose not to wise in his seat of power, he came to understand that the kings might not only came from his own inner self, but the numerous worms serving benieth him in the complex and somewhat disorganized fuedal system. Waris was one of the many lesser worms always toiling for their grand master, unable to turn away from his strength. Waris like the rest sought his own morsle, it is impossible to admire a creature able to so utterly control his surroundings.
Through the well owed generosity of the King of Aran-gird, Waris found himself training in the guild of the darkknight of Arkham, wondering what he was going to do now.
