Description

Tall and slim, this man stands here with a look of deep concentration upon
his face. Jet black hair contrasts with the pale skin of his face, lending a
dramatic element to his icy blue eyes. While his hair hangs loosely, well
past his shoulders, there is a slight protrusion as his half-elven ears peak
out only slightly from his mane. A practiced smile is fixed upon his lips, as
his eyes look cautiously in every direction at once, apparently in search

Chapter 4

Disgraced

You heart skips a beat, as you see a noble Elven Knight, complete with
gleaming armor and a shining sword, walking through the Square in your
direction. He has returned from a campaign of many years. You recognize the
face, and that contagious smile.. but you were much too young to remember
anything else. But he is every bit the hero mother would tell you about,
every night before bed.
She runs to him first, jumping in his arms with no hesitation. A smile on her
face. She has never been happier.

You take the first step to join her, before something else catches your eye.
A Dark-elf, here. So out of place.. but no one else notices him. Why?
He glares at the Paladin, murderous rage in his eyes. What's going on? Why
doesn't anyone stop him? He takes a step closer, then another. You yell out a
warning.. but it never leaves your throat. Frozen in terror, you do nothing
but watch.

A glint of steel, you see the dagger pulled from the Dark-elf assassin's
robes. You know what's coming.. but you do nothing to stop it. Why won't you
yell? Why can't you make a sound?

A gurgle of bloodied air, as the knife slashes the Paladin's throat. Your
father's throat. He falls limp, dead nearly instantly. Still.. you do
nothing. A piercing scream. Painful to the ears not for it's intensity, but
for the agony it represents. Your mother is crying over his body. No one else
sees who perpetrated the crime. The assassin walks calmly away. His mission
complete. Only you saw him. You witnessed it.. no others.

Your fault. If only you could have screamed. Warned them. Warned the guards.
Warned.. anyone. But no. You watched. You saw it all. But did nothing.

Your mother could never forgive you. Why would she? She was so happy only a
moment ago. More than you had ever seen her. And now she wails in suffering.
She won't understand. You don't even understand.

You can't face her. So you turn.. you leave, without looking back. You've
disgraced yourself. And so you vow to never return. You head south. To
Voralian City. You visited it once, before. Perhaps you can find a way to
redeem yourself there.

Chapter 3

The Guildmaster

Jaisel? Yes I know him. I've trained him most of his life.. why do you ask?

Very well. I've always considered him one of my most adept students. He
learns so quickly I almost feel useless in training him. But.. there's
something that makes me nervous about him. He's so.. passionate, I suppose. I
mean, if you were to meet him, at first glance he'd seem like the friendly
young Half-elf you had ever met. Polite, well-spoken, charming. But there's..
there's another side to him.

See, he does consider himself an assassin. But he's told me on several
occassions, that he won't choose targets based on the highest bidder. It's
like he's his own client, with his own agenda. And Gods help you if you make
his list. I've personally witnessed his savagery when he does strike an
enemy.. I can only imagine how fearsome he will be in a few more years.

But anyways, as I was saying.. it's like he considers himself a righteous
assassin. Going after those Evil types that you hear the Paladin's guild
always squawking about. I don't really see the point.. there's no money in
that, after all. But you know.. I guess that's his thing.

You want to know why I train him? Well.. he does pay, after all. It's just
bad business to turn down a paying student. Even one like him.. besides, I
figure as long as I'm not on his list, what's the harm?

Oh.. you mean why did he come to this guild, instead of the Paladins, or
something? Well.. I actually asked him that, once. He went into a long boring
story about how his father was murdered, about how he lived on the streets,
and about how learned to live in the shadows to survive. You know.. the same
story everyone tells me. I guess it's probably true though. He seems kinda..
haunted by something, I guess. Like he's always trying to live it down. But
what do I know, I'm just a guildmaster. I'm not some kinda priest, looking to
help him out.

The Letter

*** A half-Elf sits here, at a crude desk in a cheap Inn. He is young, though
*** the worried expression on his face betrays a lifetime of struggle. His
*** pen begins to move slowly, methodically as he writes.

Mother,

I am alive, I am well. I know you must worry, after all these years. But I
could not face you after.. after Father.

It's my fault.

There. It's something you should know. I saw it. I saw the Dark-elf before he
struck. I knew it was coming. But I didn't warn Father. Or you. Or.. anyone.
I tried. I wanted to. But.. I froze. I could do nothing. I failed you. And I
failed Father.

And he is dead, because of me.

I hope you can see why I left. I could not face you. I did not deserve to
face you.

I have left our home, Mother.. and I do not expect to return. I have taken up
Father's fight. You know I could never be a Paladin. And I will never be
worthy of that title. But I found other means, of fighting Father's
"Righteous war". It is not so honorable.. but I think it is the only means.

I am an Assassin.

I know your reaction, Mother.. but please do not judge me for it. I am not
like the Dark-elf. I am not like the gruesome stories you told me as a child.
I am not like the typical Assassin's at all. But I use their teachings. I use
them to fight them, Mother. I hope you can understand.

I have dedicated my life, to carrying out Father's dream. A dream of victory,
for the Light. I can never change Father's fate. But perhaps I can keep his
dream alive, and see it to it's successful conclusion, as he would have done
himself, were he.. alive.

You have my love, Mother. But I am no longer deserving of yours.

Chapter 1

A Conversation

No, I'm not too angry. I mean, sure I might save a few choice words for a
Drow, or a Lich or even an Imperial. But who cares about them? I don't. They
won't have any doubt what I think of them.
At least I'm not a coward who makes threats and doesn't follow through. I do
follow through. Which is worse? Words, or action? I take both, so I suppose
it doesn't matter.

And my treatment of my enemies? I treat them however they need to be treated
to make them end up dead. That's the important thing. How they end up dead,
who's hand kills them, when and where, none of it matters to me. Why would
it? The point is to win this thing, and to get rid of all of them. The
means.. doesn't matter.

And the lies? Of course I lie, sometimes. Why would I tell my enemies the
truth? I know the value of information. I see no reason to share it with
those who I intend to kill.. or those who intend to kill me. And lying to
avoid being a criminal? The noblest thing to do in the situation. Better than
to be a hunted by the mostly honorable guards, trying to defend their city.
They don't know the difference. They don't know I'm only wanted because I
killed a Drow. If they did.. I'm sure they'd shake my hand and leave me be.

I know, I know.. there is no Paladin in Thera who would condone it. But.. I
am not as strong as they are. Not as noble. They are better than me. I
respect them, though. More than any.. though a few High-Elves do come close.
I will do what they ask of me. I owe it to them. Everyone does. They are
better than any of us. And so yes, I treat them with the repect they deserve.
Does that make me two-faced? Of course not. It makes me honest. I treat
everyone how they deserve to be treated. If you deserve to be praised, you
are. If you deserve to be ruthlessly killed in the streets, then you will be.

I vowed to fight and to die for this cause. I've done plenty of each, and I
will continue to until the war is over and I stand over the corpses of our
last enemies. So why even care how it gets done? We can't all follow the
strict Code of the Paladins. I'm not good enough..

You're not good enough.

But you will do what you can. You owe it to him.

*** Jaisel continues to stare in front of him, a determined scowl unwavering
*** on his face. Slowly, he turns from the mirror and slinks away.
