Description

A thick, shining beard frames a quirky, fat-lipped mouth on this almost
cheerful looking duergar. Though his armor looks to be dirty, the soot-like
texture that hides it's sheen suggests it is a residue from something more
industrial than mud. When he smiles, you see his yellow teeth shine in the
same mocking way his greasy, brown skin does. Being only 5-feet and a few
inches tall, he stands barely at an average humans shoulder but his girth
compensates for this well. Like the stump of a tree, his body looks as
irremovable from it's place as his belief in his cause.

You notice suddenly that where his left ear ought to be, there is only a lump
of hideous scars.

Worn proudly on his hand, a glowing silver tattoo burns with a divine aura.

Chapter 5

Klurak's humble beginnings.

Klurak was born close on the surface, a secret he guards closely from
everyone, and later descended into the Underdark in the hopes of
rediscovering his richer duergar roots. Upon finding a colony in one of the
caves, he set up an import business using his contacts on the surface.
Selling was his strength and somehow being amongst the Surface scum had
gifted him more insight into pleasing his customers than anyone below.
Perhaps it was the cold, depressing nature of the Underdark. Or the lack of
original humor and conversation it produced. But whatever it was, he shined
amongst the traders like an uncut gem. Jealousy rose and in just a few months
someone decided to take the shaping of him into their own hands.

For a few weeks now, emissaries of the Greater Clans had visited Klurak
trying to demand taxes from him. Placed as he was, close to the surface but
not far enough into anyone's caves to be considered part of the Duergar,
Svirfnebli or Dark-elves empires, he sat in a veritable gray zone for taxes
and levies. The larger number of his customers were smuggling his goods in
and this hadn't escaped the attention of the Powers that Be. Turning every
messenger away, Klurak felt smugly comfortable in his position of power.

It wasn't until Klurak found himself set upon by the Clan guard that he
realised how serious they were taking him. His warehouse guards either paid
off or dead, he was helpless before the duergar that presented himself.
Although his face was unfamiliar, his clothing told Klurak that he was from
Aran'gird. A member of the Treth'aran clan or some such. Though Klurak stood
by the evidence that he truly sat in no ones territory his captor turned it
around and asked Klurak under who's law he was protected then. Feeling panic
through the haze of blood and pain, he sat there as they cut away his ear to
mark him an enemy of their clan. Discovering his wet stocks, the brandy and
whiskey laced crates were looted and the remainders used to set light to
everything he owned.

Left with the shame of failure, the mark of a criminal and nothing but his
hidden stash of coins Klurak fled the Underdark and resolved to take
revenge on the people below that crossed him. They saw his life as nothing
without all they'd taken but for a duergar who had already made a business
from nothing it was but a few short steps to finding something more
lucrative. Something he could get his teeth into.

Perhaps it was time to stop playing for small stakes, and join the biggest
card table he knew.

Forging lies about his past and spreading rumors about losing the ear in a
duel with a family of hooked horrors, he made his way to the heart of Thera
to begin anew.

Chapter 4

Klurak's use of Lord Enlilth's religion

Being a businessman/conman and not truly a warrior at heart, Klurak's idea of
earning Enlilth's favor is to shower him with gifts and trophies cut from a
carefully calculated percentage of his own wealth. Although he knows this
alone will not be enough to earn the Magic he seeks from his new Lord, Klurak
is presented with two possible paths depending on circumstance and Lord
Enlilth's own desires:

1.Klurak becomes an imperial, forcing him to part with more of his Wealth
(that which he treasures quite dearly) but gaining more in Power and
Influence. Klurak believes strongly in 'Covering the Law's arse, so it can
protect his assets from grubby claws'. To this end he is religiously devout
to the Law but also very demanding of it.
2.Klurak becomes a magistrate and uses the Tribunal as more of a Vault-like
entity for his reputation, wealth and power. He wouldn't use his position as
a Magistrate as a means to power as much as he would see it as a way of
protecting what he was raking in from around Thera. This one is more
favorable in terms of Wealth but less favorable from a Power and Influence
point of view.

Klurak still deliberates over which has a more lasting value to him
personally, and which would earn him more favor with his Lord. Either has the
potential to become a good investment but the returns from both differ
greatly.

In order to sympathise better with Enlilth's ideals, Klurak has attempted to
embrace more the Duergar culture he never truly knew. He is very likely to
make mistakes in his assumptions about the Underdark culture but one thing he
feels certain about is he should hate dwarves. This is a much more
superficial hate as Klurak views them as pretty sources of coin and metal
instead of blood-enemies. Assuming, of course, he actually meets a dwarf that
can stand his heretical presence.

For the Religion and Personal beliefs, Klurak believes the sacrificing of
treasures to be Heresy. Being Poor, Weak and Useless are also heretical
qualities. In his mind, Thieves represent many of these qualities and
although he can respect deception he hates thieves with a passion that stems
from his Warehouse ownership.

As time develops, so will Klurak's relationships! Let time tell what he'll be
next.

Chapter 3

Embracing a faith of Greed and Envy. Motivating Klurak into the Empire.

Reflecting on what he is to become, Klurak found himself meditating in Lord
Enlilth's shrine. The ochre taint on the trinkets he tossed into the pit
seemed darker in the torchlight but no less satisfying. Thirsting for more
gold like a camel for water, Klurak felt his grip on his future slipping
disturbingly. Turning to the Altar of Greed he read carefully from Lord
Enlilth's wisdom:

'This altar serves to remind the faithful tha gold alone will not satiate.'

And there it was, his answer. He could spend a life time cutting deals and
gathering wealth. He could build an institution around it just to protect it.
But it would not be nearly enough to satisfy him if it was -just- gold. There
had to be more satiating thrills to be had power and knowledge that would
make Archmages swoon and Kings falter. Reaching into the void that had yet to
be filled he embraced that duergar cunning and began plotting a way to ascend
rapidly amongst the Imperial ranks. If he has to suffer being a peon for too
long, his life could be wasted and Lord Enlilth would begin to discard him.
To please himself, is to please his Lord, so bonded is Klurak to this fate.
Where his lust for personal gratification will not guide him, his envy of
those still above him will. Let even those who work for Lord Enlilth fear an
axe in the back. Klurak will see himself rising above them or die deposing
them before he even feels the graying of age in his beard. Life is always
shorter than you think and there is no ultimate pleasure. There's always a
better one to be had.

Chapter 2

Progressing higher in power

Taking into account his current standing, Klurak has two objectives on his
path to greater power. The first, is to acquire all the knowledge and power
he can from sources outside the Empire bringing them inside where
possible. His second, is to gain the title of High Priest. Only those on the
council can truly begin to control their fates, and Klurak quickly tires of
being a pawn even if he is a sly one.

Steadily his wealth grows, though much of it has been invested in the Empire
his own personal accounts are always their to comfort him with luxuries.
Scouring Thera of it's weaker mortals, and assimilating their wealth has
brought Klurak a lot of pleasure. But there are still plenty of treasures he
lusts to own in the hands of his foes.

Chapter 1

High priesthood, foolishness and Lord Enlilth's reign of the Empire

Klurak has found that each step higher up on the pyramid of power makes his journey slower and slower. With the former High priest
expelled, there is no threat to his seat but the Emperor watches him with an eagle eye - knowing full well his intentions.

Though his merchant habits are hard to resist, they are taking a further and further back seat to his
acquisition of worldly power. There is no bartering when you reach a certain point - only victory through force.
This has been made somewhat harder by the slipping that Klurak's memory has begun to do. Cursed by the
rod of Minos - he has began to lose not only past memories but current ones, as they struggle for dominance in his
injured mind. This strange form of amnesia could put his position at formidable risk and he is desperate to see it cured.

As more and more pawns slide into place, Lord Enlilth will be in a far greater position to defeat any who would oppose him.
