Jhengar the Legend of the Battlefield

Description

Standing the height of a short dwarf, the grey-skinned gnome is nearly as
broad of shoulder as he is tall. His face is somewhat craggy, though the
overlarge nose, low cheeks and wide-set eyes give him a very simple look.
While a rugged goatee juts out from his chin, he has an almost child-like
quality to his countenance. This comparison quickly ends with the rest of
his bearing, the quality armor, well used axes and obvious musculature
proving he can handle himself. Somewhat strangely, a large book hangs from
his belt, and the ends of various scrolls and parchments can be seen
protruding from his being. A wholly unconventional look sums up this deep
gnome.

Chapter 4

Different from the beginning.
Added Thu Apr 3 16:33:43 2008 at level 1:

Penned by the hand of Rialis Silverstring, minstrel of Darsylon. I write
this account as I heard it told to me. One evening found me in the South
Daerien tavern. After my usual rousing performance, I sojourned to a quiet
table. Seated in the corner next to me was a burly little svirfneblin
telling a rousing tale of his history...to empty air. As you can imagine,
this caught my attention. Read on, dear friends, to hear what he had to say.
(For those who are offended at my evesdropping, I politely asked the little
man if I could listen inhe told me to "join the crowd").

I am Jhengar, but everyone calls me MapMaker. Why? I'll get to that, don't
interrupt. My mother was a mage of Cragstone. I don't hate mages because of
her, even though they say Im different because she drank one too many
potions, cast one too many spells when I was still inside. They say I hear
voices and talk to people that aren't there, but you all know better.

Well, anyway. Most of the other children were afraid of me. I never
understood why they got scared when I'd yell at one of you, but they did.
The only one who didn't was big brother. I'm told mother was more willing to
put off her craft when he was inside. All told, though, I've been fortunate.
As we grew, he became a general. I was never much for tactics, but I've
always been strong, so I became his protector.

It worked out well for him. One of the reasons people thing I'm strange is
that I like to record things. I've got maps of everywhere I've been, and
little dots showing things I've done. Like dead mages. I didn't always hate
them, you know. Here's what happened. One night around the fire, he was
telling a spooky tale about a giant that kept gnomes in a sack and let them
out when he was bored. I laughed and said that was silly, to which he told
me I wouldn't laugh so hard if a mage shrunk me and put me in his pouch.

Two days later he disappeared. Just like that. Gone. No one knew where he'd
went. Sure, we were near known slaver routes, but he was much too good a
fighter to be taken like that. No one knew what happened, until I remembered
the party of enchanters we'd passed. Maybe one of them had shrunk my brother
and put him in a sack!

Well, we went after them. The others claimed it was just to ask them if
they'd seen anything, but I knew it was a rouse. When we found them and they
claimed no knowledge, I knew they were lying. I told them to empty their
sacks, and they refused. Of course they refused! I grabbed my axe and started
hitting them. They seemed to die rather fast, but one got away. When none of
their sacks had my brother, I just knew he was it had to be with the one that
ran away...

I, being a bard of some renown, stopped listening there. This poor little
creature, I thought. Delusions, paranoia, compulsions to draw maps...he
certainly seemed mentally stunted. But angry, that much I could tell. I plan
to follow him discretely, and shall publish more of his escapades.

A New Hut.
Added Mon Apr 21 18:01:00 2008 at level 30:

In all my years as a bard, I can say with some authority I have never
witnessed such a humorous scene.

Little Mapmaker had just been granted admission to the Village of Battle,
something he assured me he was most proud of. I did not miss the amused
looks on some of the other villagers faces as they watched him discuss it
with me, but Ill simply chalk that up to their barbarian ways.

He had just finished telling me why he acted the way he did. I had wondered
why he was usually so polite, and he replied that it reminded him of his old
army, when he did his best by being nice and quiet. Now, he went about
building his hut. He fairly competently made the foundation and walls of
stone, and a rather comical looking giant woodsman was standing next to him,
offering to help get the roof beams in place. Yet every time Mapmaker would
hand him a beam, the giant would jump back and laugh.

It was rather sad to see the Mapmaker so disrespected, though I privately had
to stifle my own chuckles when I saw how much the other villagers found this
scene funny. Still, it was a proud day for Jhengar Mapmaker, which also
pleased me.

Penned by the hand of Rialis Silverstring, minstrel of Darsylon.

Year One Hundred Eighty and Beyond
Added Tue May 6 17:40:11 2008 at level 44:

Well, here I begin my journal. Things have changed over my hundred seventy
five years. Life has been eventful since building my hut. I cannot describe
the wonder of meeting the monks of the Macalla. To think where Ive come
from, and what people have thought of me, that I would one day initiate into
the most eternal of warriors...it has had an incredibly profound effect on
me. When the guild masters first told me of the path to the Monastery of
Macalla, I was skeptical I would possess the innate ability to make myself
worthy of any of the thirty six. While my initial arrival was greeted with
less than enthusiasm, an older monk drifted out to greet me.

Over the next few months, this monk taught me more about myself, and indeed
life, than I ever thought I could learn. Muriag was half dwarven, half
svirfneblin, and possessed a rare combination of tenacity and wisdom that I
may never see again. He asked me to tell him my tale, which he used to guide
me in my path of combat. He contended that I did indeed have the inner
strength to make me worthy of the Order, which he believed I proved through
living and persevering.By learning my craft, and finding my way further
into the guild and the Village, I had shown that I could survive. Through
these, Muriag guided me to learn the Whispers of the Great siege, and it
turns out he was not far wrong.

The physical boon I reaped from his tutelage was equal, if not surpassed by
the guidance he gave over how I portrayed myself. He never once questioned
the consistent presence of Rialis or Kobu, instead concentrating on the fact
that because no one else could see them, by dealing with them in the presence
of others, I was undermining my perceived worth and their confidence in me.
When I questioned this, he reminded me of my passion for healing and
defending, giving me the stern advice that a wounded monk must have faith in
the man that would be his savior.

I have taken Muriag's words to heart, and resolved to confer with my personal
advisers in private. Rialis and Kobu took it rather well, though the giant
seemed a bit put out. I have found that life is a process, and keeping this
journal along with my maps seems to help me to grow, so I shall use it.
